The Story of the Volsungs (Volsunga Saga); with Excerpts from the Poetic Edda Epic Norse Sagas: Heroes, Myths, and Battles of the Volsungs【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

The "Story of the Volsungs" (Volsunga Saga) is a seminal work in the realm of Old Norse literature, offering a gripping narrative that intertwines myth, heroism, and tragedy. Set against a backdrop of Nordic sagas, this epic recounts the legendary tale of the Volsung clan, particularly focusing on the fateful life of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer. The saga employs a rich, poetic style that reflects the oral traditions of the time, melding prose with verse, while its incorporation of excerpts from the Poetic Edda provides a deeper cultural and mythological context. This literary tapestry showcases themes of fate, vengeance, and the enduring struggle between good and evil, resonating with audiences both past and present. The author of this saga, though anonymous, has left a powerful legacy that speaks to the cultural identity of the Norse people. Scholars debate the origins and historical influences behind the saga, suggesting that the blending of myth and history may have been inspired by the tumultuous tribal conflicts of the time. The careful construction of characters and events likely reflects societal values and collective memory, providing insight into a warrior culture deeply connected to fate and the supernatural. For readers interested in the foundations of Western literary tradition, the "Story of the Volsungs" is an indispensable work that transcends time. Its exploration of heroic exploits, moral complexities, and rich mythological symbolism offers not only an engaging narrative but also profound insights into the human condition. This saga is highly recommended for those seeking to understand the roots of epic storytelling and the cultural ethos of ancient northern Europe.

It's a fairy tale as cruel as all loved fairy tales from children and adults. It comes from episodes of a true story, suddenly revived in the prophetic form, almost in a way a comic novel would. A shocking story of a love supreme, more powerful than any evil power, even of death, of money, of the temporary fame of the beloved stars from Hollywood; irreverent and funny.

Delve into the rich tapestry of Norse mythology and medieval Icelandic literature with 'The Poetic Edda & The Prose Edda'. This collection transcends the boundaries of time, weaving together an array of ancient myths, heroic lays, and Skaldic verses that reverberate with the power and complexity of these lost worlds. Offerings range from apocalyptic visions of Ragnar?k to intricate tales of gods and monsters. While the works are traditionally situated within a Scandinavian context, their universal themes of fate, valor, and the human condition ensure a resonance far beyond their original setting. The dual inclusion of both the poetic and prose traditions illuminates the breadth of stylistic variance inherent in Norse storytelling, enriching our appreciation for these seminal works. Helmed by the masterful historian and bard Snorri Sturluson and the legendary cleric Saemund Sigfusson, this anthology brings together narratives that have deeply influenced Western literature and culture. Snorri's comprehensive narratives offer insight into the oral traditions from which they originated, providing an invaluable bridge to the past. This anthology benefits from their expertise, offering layers of cultural, historical, and literary insights that underscore the significance of these texts in preserving Norse heritage, while simultaneously demonstrating the intricate art of storytelling that defined this era. Readers are invited into a world where ancient wisdom and narrative artistry converge, offering a unique opportunity to explore the multiplicity of perspectives inherent within Norse mythology. 'The Poetic Edda & The Prose Edda' is more than just a collection; it is an invitation to witness the dynamic interplay of myth and history. Whether for academic pursuit or personal enrichment, this anthology stands as an indispensable resource, ensuring enduring dialogue between the ancient voices of Nordic lore and the modern reader.

Die Snorra Edda als Quelle der nordischen Mythologie? Quellenkritik an ausgew?hlten Beispielen【電子書籍】[ Susanne St?blein ]

Prose Edda ー Gylfaginning (The Fooling Of Gylfe) Gods, Giants, and Heroes: Legends of Norse Mythology and Creation【電子書籍】[ Snorri Sturluson ]

In his seminal work, *Prose Edda '?? Gylfaginning*, Snorri Sturluson deftly weaves a tapestry of Norse mythology, drawing upon an intricate blend of prose and poetic forms to illuminate the complexities of ancient Scandinavian beliefs. The narrative unfolds through the whimsical tale of Gylfi, a Swedish king who seeks wisdom by disguising himself and engaging with the deities of Asgard. This work serves not only as a fascinating exposition of myth but also as a preservation of the cultural heritage and linguistic richness of the Norse tradition, positioning itself within the broader context of medieval literature that sought to reconcile faith, folklore, and history amidst the encroaching changes of Christian thought. Snorri Sturluson, a formidable historian, poet, and politician from Iceland, emerged during the 13th century amidst a rapidly evolving sociopolitical landscape influenced by both Norse traditions and the burgeoning Christian culture. His intimate knowledge of Icelandic sagas and oral traditions, coupled with his desire to safeguard his heritage, motivated him to compile and narrate the myths and stories that shaped his world, of which *Gylfaginning* is a crucial part. This book is highly recommended for readers wishing to delve into the mystique of Norse mythology, explore its rich narrative structures, and appreciate Snorri'??s profound influence on literature. *Gylfaginning* serves both as an engaging gateway for newcomers and a vital resource for scholars seeking to understand the depth of myth-making that continues to resonate in modern culture.

The Younger Edda; Also called Snorre's Edda, or The Prose Edda Unveiling the Secrets of Norse Mythology and Poetry【電子書籍】[ Snorri Sturluson ]

The Younger Edda, also known as Snorre's Edda or The Prose Edda, stands as a monumental work of medieval Icelandic literature, first compiled in the early 13th century by the renowned saga writer Snorri Sturluson. This text is an essential source of Norse mythology, offering not only a systematic account of the gods and heroes but also a sophisticated narrative style that intertwines poetry and prose. The Edda serves as a crucial link to understanding Old Norse culture, combining mythology, cosmology, and practical instructions for skaldic poetry, showcasing Sturluson'??s mastery of language and his deep knowledge of Norse tradition amid the cultural upheaval of his time. Snorri Sturluson, born into a powerful Icelandic family in 1179, was not just a historian but also an influential political figure navigating the complexities of Icelandic chieftaincy. His exposure to both the rich oral traditions of his ancestors and the evolving literary landscape of medieval Europe likely informed his desire to preserve Norse mythology in written form. His work aimed to rescue these tales from obscurity, reflecting a broader concern with cultural identity during a time of growing Danish and Norwegian influence. The Younger Edda is recommended for anyone interested in mythology, literature, or the historical interplay of culture and identity. It invites readers to explore the intricate tapestry of Norse legends through Sturluson'??s insightful lens, making it an indispensable text for scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike.

The Total Light【電子書籍】[ Edda Tassi ]

"THE TOTAL LIGHT" is a collection of poems chosen by the author himself in his vast literary production (more than 30 works, both in prose and poetry, but the production in verses is more copious). "THE TOTAL LIGHT" is the splendor of the sixteen years, crystallized within itself forever. When life and death are equal, and each love is overwhelming. A crazy teenager girl meets a series of ghosts who will become her teachers. And she will remain the little crazy sixteen year old girl, while the others will grow. Because she has to keep the brightness of the world, hidden by the dark power that assimilates and destroys everything . The title of this collection is the reinterpretation of one of the most beloved ghosts: that Juan Ramon Jimenez with: "LA ESTACION TOTAL" shocked the crazy sixteen year old girl, giving her blood, gold, honey, the height of the great international poetry. In the verses of "THE TOTAL LIGHT" , Edda Tassi celebrates the natural cycle of light. Appearance, passion, the first and the last love, death as a sweet ending. The Story of the Volsungs (Volsunga Saga) with Excerpts from the Poetic Edda【電子書籍】[ Snorri Sturluson ]

It would seem fitting for a Northern folk, deriving the greater and better part of their speech, laws, and customs from a Northern root, that the North should be to them, if not a holy land, yet at least a place more to be regarded than any part of the world beside; that howsoever their knowledge widened of other men, the faith and deeds of their forefathers would never lack interest for them, but would always be kept in remembrance. One cause after another has, however, aided in turning attention to classic men and lands at the cost of our own history. Among battles, "every schoolboy" knows the story of Marathon or Salamis, while it would be hard indeed to find one who did more than recognise the name, if even that, of the great fights of Hafrsfirth or Sticklestead. The language and history of Greece and Rome, their laws and religions, have been always held part of the learning needful to an educated man, but no trouble has been taken to make him familiar with his own people or their tongue. Even that Englishman who knew Alfred, Bede, Caedmon, as well as he knew Plato, Caesar, Cicero, or Pericles, would be hard bestead were he asked about the great peoples from whom we sprang; the warring of Harold Fairhair or Saint Olaf; the Viking (1) kingdoms in these (the British) Western Isles; the settlement of Iceland, or even of Normandy. The knowledge of all these things would now be even smaller than it is among us were it not that there was one land left where the olden learning found refuge and was kept in being. In England, Germany, and the rest of Europe, what is left of the traditions of pagan times has been altered in a thousand ways by foreign influence, even as the peoples and their speech have been by the influx of foreign blood; but Iceland held to the old tongue that was once the universal speech of northern folk, and held also the great stores of tale and poem that are slowly becoming once more the common heritage of their descendants. The truth, care, and literary beauty of its records; the varied and strong life shown alike in tale and history; and the preservation of the old speech, character, and traditionーa people placed apart as the Icelanders have beenーcombine to make valuable what Iceland holds for us. Not before 1770, when Bishop Percy translated Mallet's "Northern Antiquities", was anything known here of Icelandic, or its literature. Only within the latter part of this century has it been studied, and in the brief book-list at the end of this volume may be seen the little that has been done as yet. It is, however, becoming ever clearer, and to an increasing number, how supremely important is Icelandic as a word-hoard to the English-speaking peoples, and that in its legend, song, and story there is a very mine of noble and pleasant beauty and high manhood. That which has been done, one may hope, is but the beginning of a great new birth, that shall give back to our language and literature all that heedlessness and ignorance bid fair for awhile to destroy.
