Moreover, while the exact causes for the currently observed increases in global temperatures are yet to be established, a growing consensus is emerging that at least part of it is human-caused. As a result, various panels and organisations have emerged throughout the world, which are working on strategies how to reverse or at least halt this process. As Kolk & Pinske point out the resulting climate policies across different sectors and locations are diverse. Various companies are trying to restructure their operations in order to reduce waste and to make their processes more energy efficient. A number of governments are enacting policies to replace CO2-intensive energy, released through the burning of coal, oil and gas by more environmentally friendly, so-called 'clean' energy, such as wind, solar, or hydroelectric power. Others are resorting back to nuclear power asserting that the actual risks of this technology are by far not as high as they are perceived to be or as they were some years ago. A further alternative that has recently been implemented by the EU is a 'cap-and-trade system' for energy-intensive industries, which defines strict limits for the absolute amount of emissions. While the responsibility for complying with this regulation rests with the companies in the respective industries, they are free to find ways how to stay within the limits. Compensating for emissions by purchasing carbon credits is one prominent option available to companies in this respect. From farm to fork, our food often travels long distances to reach our plate. The carbon dioxide emissions from these food miles traveled are compounded by the methane produced when food waste is tossed in landfills.</p> <p>We cannot continue to spite the land that feeds us. The witnesses before us today are all pursuing sustainable dining options that can alleviate the impact of our food consumption on global warming. The impact is prevalent in the three responsibilities of a dining facility: procurement, consumption, and disposal. Purchasing local food reduces food miles traveled. Using renewable, biodegradable plates and utensils reduces oil consumption and waste. Turning table scraps and leftover food into compost returns nutrients to farms and reduces global warming.</p> <p>The food Americans eat increasingly comes from greater distances. From 1970 to 1980, our food miles traveled increased 1,300 to 1,500 miles. A 2002 World Watch Institute report stated that food in the United States traveled between 1,500 and 2,400 miles. The typical American prepared meal contains on average ingredients from at least 5 countries outside of the United States. By favoring more local fare, the CO2 emissions associated with food travel can decrease significantly. A University of Washington study found that a plate of Washington-sourced foods resulted in 33 percent fewer CO2 emissions than a plate of similar foods from their most popularly imported countries or States of origin.</p> <p>Even if a meal is entirely local, its contribution to global warming continues after the plates are cleared. Yard trimmings and food waste constitute 24 percent of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream, and half of the garbage at restaurants is estimated to be food waste. As this food rots in the landfill, it produces methane. If that methane escapes into the atmosphere, it traps 20 times more heat than CO2. Food in landfills will continue to contribute to methane emissions. A 2006 study predicted that, by 2025, food waste will increase by 44 percent worldwide. This methane buildup is deplorable because it is preventable. Food waste can be recycled into compost, resulting in fewer emissions and in new economic products. Compost soil can be used to fertilize crops and landscaping and support green jobs in food waste recycling. The reduced garbage load can result in lowered disposal fees as well. For the first problem, the so-called Pioneer anomaly, a wholly new and innovative method was developed for computing all contributions to the acceleration due to onboard thermal sources. Through a careful analysis of all parts of the spacecraft Pioneer 10 and 11, the application of this methodology has yielded the observed anomalous acceleration. This marks a major achievement, given that this problem remained unsolved for more than a decade.<br /> For the second anomaly, the flyby anomaly, a tiny glitch in the velocity of spacecraft that perform gravity assisting maneuvers on Earth, no definitive answer is put forward; however a quite promising strategy for examining the problem is provided and a new mission is proposed. <p>The occurrence of high concentrations of ozone during summer episodes in the troposphere over Europe is a problem still unsolved. Although a number・ of measures have been implemented that will achieve a further reduction of precursor emissions in the next years, this will not be sufficient to reduce the ozone concentration to levels below thresholds set up to protect human health and plants. Thus, further reductions of emissions of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides are necessary. However, with regard to the increasing costs associated with increasing emission reduction, it is essential to implement abatement strategies, that are effective, i.e. achieving the environmental aim set up, and efficient, i. e. doing this with the least costs possible. In this book, the authors describe the features and the application of a methodology and a model system to identify effective and efficient strategies to reduce ambient concentrations of tropospheric ozone to comply with thresholds set up to protect human health, agricultural crops and ecosystems. Furthermore, macroeconomic impacts of such strategies are addressed and, as burden and benefits of these strategies are not equally distributed between countries, different burden sharing schemes are discussed. This scheme covers industrial plants that can now trade allowances of carbon dioxide (CO2). This new carbon market is the largest of its sort, growing quickly and behaving very similarly to the stock markets. Because of being so new, there is still a considerable amount of uncertainty about its future development, but some first lessons are discussed in the report. Crucial is the allocation of allowances with all its exceptions that can lead to false incentives to actually increase emissions. Allowances now represent a cost that can either lead to competitive disadvantage or present an opportunity to increase margins if allocated for free. Investment decisions are being affected because environmental concerns are translated into a cost that can be evaluated against the costs of other alternatives. Consequences of the US being the worlds largest emitter not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol is addressed. Pitfalls of the system are identified and recommendations given.
