Long before Captain Jack Sparrow raised hell with the Pirates of the Caribbean, Tom Bristol sailed to hell and back Under the Black Ensign. That’s where the real adventure begins.

Bristol’s had plenty of bad luck in his life. Press-ganged into serving aboard a British vessel, he’s felt the cruel captain’s lash on his back. Then, freed from his servitude by pirates, his good fortune immediately takes a bad turn … the buccaneers accuse him of murder and leave him to die on a deserted island. Now all he has left are a few drops of water, a gun and just enough bullets to put himself out of his misery.

But Bristol’s luck is about to change. Finding himself in the unexpected company of a fiery woman, he rescues a slave ship, unsheathes his sword, raises a pirate flag of his own and sets off to make love and war on the open seas in this nautical adventure.

In his early twenties, Hubbard led the two-and-a-half-month, five-thousand-mile Caribbean Motion Picture Expedition. He followed that with the West Indies Mineralogical Expedition near San Juan, Puerto Rico, in which he completed the island’s first mineralogical survey as an American territory. It was during these two journeys that Hubbard became an expert on the Caribbean’s colorful historyーan expertise he drew on to write stories like Under the Black Ensign.

“A riveting tale of sailing ships, piracy and the high seas.” ーMidwest Book Review

* A National Indie Excellence Award Winner

Just when Princess Teagan and her husbands had decided to have no more secrets, lies, or prevarications between them, the Galaxic Government has other ideas, and it leaves some of them on opposite sides.

After being brought to the cusp of interstellar war, the Parvac Empire participates in a deadly race to uncover the source of technology far too advanced to have been created within the known galaxies. The discovery would put a government or criminal faction at a major militaristic advantage, and there are those who will kill whoever gets in the way along with anyone who might serve as a witness.

Ordered to discover the source of the alien technology, Ensign Probus and her team put the skills which they've learned at the Inquisitors Academy to use. Their search takes them from the Laconian Sector and across Galaxic space. However, they aren't alone in their mission. It seems as though a subtle consciousness draws them forward, but is it an alien consciousness or the work of the Mad Ones?

Teagan's husbands decide to facilitate her sense of power and personal self-worth by teaching her what they know and treating their beloved Imperial Princess like as much of an equal as they can, but not everyone has the same purpose. Captain Espanoza, Teagan's former hero, does everything she can to undermine her newfound confidence and her efforts. However, if being the only daughter of the Emperor of the Parvac Empire has taught her anything, it's how to stand up for herself. With innocent lives hanging in the balance, Teagan will put her considerable new knowledge to the test, and she won't let anyone get in her way, not even one of the men she loves.

It is late 1797, and Ireland teeters on the brink of rebellion. Seventeen-year-old James Lockwood, fresh from school, defies his aristocratic father and takes a commission with the Westmeath Militia Regiment. Posted to the regimental barracks, he is thrown head-first into military life, struggling to fit in while grappling with the duties of a junior officer. He faces numerous challenges: the Irish enlisted men are distrustful of their officers, many of the common people hate any man in a red coat, and his brother officers are a puzzling mix of personality and ability.

Brigid O'Brian, meanwhile, is at school, and is offered an opportunity, rare for an Irish Catholic, to teach there. Her father wants her to return home to Clonakilty, but eventually allows her to work in far-away Cork town. Brigid, an exceptionally lovely young woman, is soon courted by the officers of the Cork garrison. As a result old friends and comrades begin to doubt the loyalties of both Brigid and her father who appears to have a darker life that could be related to the rebellion.

James Lockwood proves himself in several actions against the rebels. When he and a fellow officer named Charles Barr, an inveterate duelist, transfer to Cork, they both vie for Brigid's affection, while the whole of Ireland dissolves into violent rebellion. Lockwood finds himself leading his men into a key battle for control of West Cork, where loyalty is tested in bloody close-quarters combat.

War Under the Red Ensign, 1914?1918【電子書籍】[ Bernard Edwards ]

he Kaisers determination to starve Britain into surrender and the development of his Navy and the U-boats in particular meant that Britains merchant navy was in the front line throughout the Great War.This book charts the progress of the war at sea which began with the sinking of the oil tanker San Wilfrido off Cuxhaven only eight hours after the official declaration of war. The merchantman Glitra was the first victim of a German U-boat (U?17) on 20 October 1914 she was to be joined by many, many more. As the war on land intensified so the naval struggle grew ever more bitter. As vividly described there were many incidents of atrocious behavior, amounting to war crimes, by the attackers against their hapless victims; sinking of lifeboats, machine-gunning of survivors, attacks without any warning designed to cause maximum casualties. We learn of instances where the weak gallantly fought back such as the duel between Captain Bissett-Smiths Otaki (with one gun) and the heavily armed German surface raider Mwe. Although he went down with his ship, Captain Smith was posthumously awarded the VC, and remains the only merchant seaman so honored.War under the Red Ensign contains many inspiring and shocking accounts of war at sea and is a gripping read.

Only an Ensign: A Tale of the Retreat from Cabul (Complete)【電子書籍】[ James Grant ]

Le jour viendraーit is the motto of our familyーgiven to us by Henry VI. 'The day will come,' said old Lord Lamorna, proudly, as he lay back in his easy chair, with his elbows resting on the arms thereof, and the tips of his upraised fingers placed together, as if he was about to pray; "and most applicable is that motto to you, nephew Richard, for I am sure that when you are my age you will regret not having taken my advice." Richard Trevelyan smiled, but looked somewhat uneasily at his younger brother Downie. "You are too rich to throw yourself away, and too well-born even for the most highly accomplished daughter of a cotton-lord, or knighted mill-owner," resumed his stately old uncle, sententiously; "a fellow knighted too probably for dirty ministerial work; but assume a virtue if you have it not, and let us see youーー" "Excuse me, my lordーexcuse me, my dear uncle. I have no desire toーto marry; why youーyourselfーー" "Don't cite me, Richard. You are only forty-three, if so much" (and here, for the information of our young lady readers, we may mention that Richard is not the hero of these pages). "I am past seventy, yet I may marry yet, and do you all out of the title," added Lamorna, with a laugh like a cackle. "My brother Dick is certainly the most listless of men," said Downie, as he selected some grapes with the embossed scissors, and filled his glass with chateau d'Yquem. "I don't think that I am so," retorted Richard. "Downie is right," said Lord Lamorna. "Why do you not go into Parliament?ーI have two snug pocket boroughs here in Cornwallーand on one hand attack routine and red-tapeism like a Radical; on the other hand, denounce retrenchment and cowardly peace-at-any-price, like a Tory of the old school. You would certainly be popular with both parties by that r?le, and do good to the country at large." "I have no turn for politics, uncle." "Diplomacy thenーmany of our family have figured as diplomats; I was ambassador to Russia, after Waterloo, and in the olden time more than one of our family have been so to the Courts of Scotland, France, and Brandenburg; and I trust we all refuted the axiom of Sir Henry Wotton, 'that an ambassador was an honest man sent abroad to lie for the good of his country.'" "I have no taste for diplomacy." "What the devil have you a taste for?" asked his uncle, testily; "not domestic life, as I can't get you to marry, like Downie here; and you soon left the army, or tired of Her Majesty's service." Richard flushed for a moment, and held his full wine glass between him and the light, as if to test the colour and purity of its contents. "I know what bachelor London life isーanother style of thing, of course, from yours, Downieーthat which someone calls the hard-working life, which begins at two P.M. one day, and ends at four A.M. next morning. There are the parks; the club, with its bow-window; flirtations at balls and assemblies; the opera, and parties to Greenwich; and then there is the darker picture of doing business with old Messrs. Bill Stamp and Cent.-per-Cent., in some dingy little den off the Strand. A bad style of thing it is to meddle with the long-nosed fellows in the discounting line; just as bad asーand often the sequence toーrunning after actresses or opera-singers. You may love them if you like; but, great Heavens! never stoop to the madness of committing matrimony with any of them, or for a moment forget the family to which you belong, and the ancient title that is your inheritance."

Middy and Ensign【電子書籍】[ George Manville Fenn ]

The close of a hot day on board Her Majesty’s ship “Startler,” whose engines kept up a regular pulsation as the screw-propeller churned the water astern into golden and orange foam. The dappled sky and the rippled sea were a blaze of colour; crimson, scarlet, burnished copper, orange chrome, dead, and flashing gold,ーall were there, on cloud edge and wave slope, mingled with purples, and greens, and blues, as the sun slowly descended to his rest. There had been a general disposition all day long to lie under awnings, and pant “like tired dogs,” so Bob Roberts the midshipman said; but now officers and men, in the lightest of garments, were eagerly looking for the cool evening breeze, and leaning over the bulwarks, gazing at the wondrous sunset sky and gorgeous sea. The deck of the clean, smart-looking vessel had a very picturesque aspect, dotted as it was with groups of officers and men; for in addition to the crew, the “Startler” carried four companies of Her Majesty’s somethingth foot, the escort of the British Resident and his suite, bound for Campong Allee, the chief town of Rajah Hamet, on the Parang River, west coast of the Malay peninsula. The Resident was to be the help and adviser of the Mohammedan potentate, who had sought the protection of the British Government; and to fix him in his position, and save him from the assaults of the various inimical petty rajahs around, the corvette was to lie for some months in the river, and the residency was to be turned into a fort, garrisoned by the troops under Major Sandars. Bob Roberts, a fair, good-looking, curly-headed lad of sixteen, was standing with his back leaned against the bulwarks, his cap thrust back, and his hands deep in his pockets, staring defiantly across the deck at a lad of about a year or so older, who, as he stood very stiff and upright by the cabin ladder, returned the stare with interest. The latter had just buckled on his sword, and, in spite of the heat, buttoned up his undress coatee to the chin, ready for the short spell of drill which he knew would take place before the officers dined; and after giving the finishing-touch to his gloves, he rather ostentatiously raised his sword, then hanging to the full length of its slings, and hooked it on to his belt. “What a jolly shame it is that we should only carry a beggarly little dirk,” said Bob Roberts to himself, as he tried to look sneeringly at the young ensign before him; for the latter came across the deck with rather a swaggering stride, and stood before the midshipman.

Between Congregation and Church Denomination and Christian Life Together【電子書籍】[ Rev Barry A. Ensign-George ]

|

Denominations are one of the primary ways in which Christians attempt to live in a community based around God. Yet there is very little careful theological analysis of denomination available today.

Between Congregation and Church offers a constructive theological understanding of denomination, showing its role as an intermediary structure between congregation and church. It places denomination and other intermediary structures within the doctrine of the church. Barry Ensign-George reviews work by theologians and church historians that can contribute to a constructive theological understanding of denomination. The book highlights particular developments in the history of the church that established preconditions for the emergence of denomination. Exploration of unity and diversity is central to this analysis, and individual chapters offer theological analyses of the unity and the diversity to which the Christians are called. Finally, denomination has often been a vehicle for sin, and the relationship between denomination and sin is considered.

Between Congregation and Church addresses a major gap in contemporary theology: the failure to offer substantive theological analysis of denomination, a major way Christians together live their faith today.

Ensign Jon Zachery, US Navy, does not fit in with his fellow officers aboard destroyer USS Manfred. Some call him useless, a mammary gland on a male pig. On the first day in the combat zone in the Tonkin Gulf, Manfred is attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats, and Ensign Zachery meets the nation's enemy face-to-face, with a .45 holstered to his side. Back home in San Diego, one month into a seven-or eight, or maybe nine-month deployment, Teresa's life revolves around their three-month-old daughter and her daily letter to Jon, and his to her.
Imagine a nation with the highest proportion of women legislators in the world. Imagine a country where a democratically elected president is committed to gender equality and poverty reduction, where urban and rural schools are being wired to the Internet, and where the government is committed to becoming a middle-income country by 2020. Imagine that this country is located in the heart of sub-Saharan Africa and that this progress comes in the wake of one of the 20th century's worst genocides. Fifteen years removed from a mass genocide that resulted in the deaths of nearly one million people, Rwanda today presents a model for hope, justice, innovation and human development. In fact, Rwanda is now a leader in achieving economic, political and social progress in this beleaguered continent. A new model of governance has emerged in this poor, African country. This model, which draws on century's old Rwandan customs called Ubudehe and IMIHIGO, is inclusive, transparent, empowers the poor, and holds leaders accountable for improving the well being of people in their districts. Rwanda: History and Hope focuses on the innovative path Rwanda has taken in governance and reconciliation, gender equity, education, health and economic growth. The authors spent a decade working and researching in the country to prepare this path-breaking book.

This is the story of an ordinary man who had a true love of the sea, but as a consequence of the war had to deal, as did many others, with extraordinary experiences.

Leaving his Cornish village of Landewednack in 1921 Charles, then aged fifteen, began his career in the Merchant Navy as a 2nd Class Saloon Boy with the Union Castle Line travelling to South Africa. He moved on to work on the Great Western Railways Channel Island Ferry, working his way up to 2nd then 1st Class Assistant Steward. Before long he was in the Mediterranean working on a cable ship, and for the next ten years on a cargo freighter travelling to Australia and New Zealand.

At the outbreak of World War II Charles signed T124X Articles and joined the Royal Navy as 2nd Steward, subsequently rated at Chief Petty Officer and eventually Chief Steward 1st Class. He saw service in several ‘theatres of war’ including two Russian Convoys and in the Mediterranean (North Africa and Salerno) before being released from Naval Service in 1946. Following this, Charles, like a lot of people who had served in the war, suffered from ill-health and consequently never went to sea again: starting ‘another life ashore’ with his family.

The novel is set against the backdrop of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842) and specifically focuses on the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842. The retreat from Kabul was a significant event in British military history, marked by harsh winter conditions, attacks by Afghan tribesmen, and the loss of thousands of British and Indian soldiers and camp followers. In "Only an Ensign," readers can expect a dramatic and gripping narrative that follows the experiences of a young British ensign, likely serving in the British Army during the Afghan campaign. The novel may offer vivid descriptions of the rugged Afghan landscape, the challenges faced by the British forces, and the camaraderie and courage of the soldiers in the face of adversity. As with much of Grant's historical fiction, "Only an Ensign" is likely to blend elements of adventure, romance, and military history. The novel may also explore themes such as loyalty, honor, sacrifice, and the human cost of war.
