The Political Possibility of Sound Fragments of Listening【電子書籍】[ Dr Salom? Voegelin ]
|

The essay is the perfect format for a crisis. Its porous and contingent nature forgives a lack of formality, while its neglect of perfection and virtuosity releases the potential for the incomplete and the unrealizable. These seven essays on The Political Possibility of Sound present a perfectly incomplete form for a discussion on the possibility of the political that includes creativity and invention, and articulates a politics that imagines transformation and the desire to embrace a connected and collaborative world.

The themes of these essays emerge from and deepen discussions started in Voegelin's previous books, Listening to Noise and Silence and Sonic Possible Worlds. Continuing the methodological juxtaposition of phenomenology and logic and writing from close sonic encounters each represents a fragment of listening to a variety of sound works, to music, the acoustic environment and to poetry, to hear their possibilities and develop words for what appears impossible.

As fragments of writing they respond to ideas on geography and migration, bring into play formless subjectivities and trans-objective identities, and practice collectivity and a sonic cosmopolitanism through the hearing of shared volumes. They involve the unheard and the in-between to contribute to current discussions on new materialism, and perform vertical readings to reach the depth of sound.

|

In "The Lost and Hostile Gospels," S. Baring-Gould embarks on a scholarly expedition through early Christian texts that diverge from the canonical accounts, illuminating the theological and historical diversities that shaped early Christianity. Baring-Gould's literary style exhibits a captivating blend of analytical rigor and narrative clarity, enriching the reader's understanding of these often overlooked gospels. He meticulously examines texts such as the Gospel of Peter and the Gospel of Thomas, providing context and critique against the backdrop of 19th-century theological debates, ultimately questioning the orthodoxy and unity of early Christian beliefs. S. Baring-Gould was a prominent Victorian-era clergyman, folklorist, and author whose extensive studies in theology and literature informed his critical perspectives. Known for his eclectic interests and erudition, he was deeply engaged in discussions surrounding faith and skepticism during a time of religious transformation. His passion for unearthing the complexities of Christian doctrine and exploring the intersection of folklore and belief propelled him to compile and analyze these alternative gospels. For readers fascinated by religious history, textual criticism, and the evolution of faith, "The Lost and Hostile Gospels" is an indispensable work that challenges preconceived notions of Christian narratives. Baring-Gould's insightful examination invites both the faithful and the curious to reconsider the richness of early Christian literature and its implications for contemporary belief.

Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion.
Epictetus taught that philosophy is a way of life and not simply a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control; we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline.
Contents:
Discourses
Enchiridion
Fragments

|

'About things that are within our power and those that are not.' Epictetus's Discourses have been the most widely read and influential of all writings of Stoic philosophy, from antiquity onwards. They set out the core ethical principles of Stoicism in a form designed to help people put them into practice and to use them as a basis for leading a good human life. Epictetus was a teacher, and a freed slave, whose discourses have a vivid informality, animated by anecdotes and dialogue. Forceful, direct, and challenging, their central message is that the basis of happiness is up to us, and that we all have the capacity, through sustained reflection and hard work, of achieving this goal. They still speak eloquently to modern readers seeking meaning in their own lives. This is the only complete modern translation of the Discourses, together with the Handbook or manual of key themes, and surviving fragments. Robin Hard's accurate and accessible translation is accompanied by Christopher Gill's full introduction and comprehensive notes. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Poems and Fragments of Catullus Translated in the Metres of the Original【電子書籍】[ Gaius Valerius Catullus ]
|

In "The Poems and Fragments of Catullus," the Roman poet Gaius Valerius Catullus artfully manifests the depth of human emotion through a collection of roughly 116 poems, ranging from passionate love sonnets to biting invectives. Written in a vibrant and dynamic style that defies the conventions of his time, Catullus's work transcends mere lyrical beauty, exhibiting a profound understanding of the complexities of love, friendship, and betrayal. His use of innovative meter and form, coupled with personal and often raw subject matter, situates his poetry firmly within the context of contemporary Roman literature while also revealing the intimate struggles of the poet himself. The fragments that remain further highlight the transient nature of art and emotion, echoing sentiments that remain relevant through the ages. Catullus, often regarded as a pivotal figure in the evolution of lyric poetry, lived during the late Roman Republic, a period marked by social and political upheaval. His own tumultuous personal relationships, particularly with Lesbia, have influenced his work, imbuing it with authenticity and emotional impact. The poet's defiance against societal norms and his candid exploration of intimacy, combined with a rich literary heritage from earlier Greek poets, make his writings not just a personal journey but also an exploration of universal themes. For scholars and casual readers alike, "The Poems and Fragments of Catullus" is a compelling read that invites reflection on the timelessness of human emotion. Its vivid imagery and candid lyrics challenge readers to confront their own experiences of love and loss. With each poem, Catullus offers a glimpse into the tumultuous world of his heart, making this collection an indispensable contribution to the canon of Western literature.

Pens?es et fragments in?dits de Montesquieu R?flexions in?dites sur la soci?t?, la politique et la libert?【電子書籍】[ Montesquieu ]

The Poems and Fragments of Catullus Translated in the Metres of the Original【電子書籍】[ Gaius Valerius Catullus ]
|

The Poems and Fragments of Catullus, a cornerstone of Latin literature, presents an extraordinary collection of 116 poems that traverse themes of love, loss, satire, and the complexities of human relationships. Catullus's poignant lyricism, innovative use of meter, and bold expressions of emotion distinguish his work within the context of Roman poetry, showcasing a departure from the more formal, grandiloquent styles of his predecessors. Comprising genres ranging from epigrams to elegies, each poem reveals a unique interplay of personal introspection and social commentary, offering a vivid glimpse into the cultural and political fabric of 1st-century BCE Rome. Gaius Valerius Catullus, often heralded as one of the most influential poets of antiquity, was born into the patrician class in Verona, likely influenced by the literary traditions of Greece and the societal nuances of his time. His tumultuous love affair with Lesbiaーwhich serves as a central theme in many of his worksーmirrors the emotional intensity and revolutionary spirit of his poetry. Catullus's intimate engagement with personal experience coupled with his sharp wit positions him as a pivotal figure in the transition towards more personal and expressive forms of poetry in Roman literature. I highly recommend The Poems and Fragments of Catullus to readers seeking a profound exploration of love and emotional complexity in poetic form. Catullus's masterful expression of human feelings, combined with his incisive critique of Roman society, not only captivates but also serves as a timeless commentary on the tumultuous nature of human connections. This collection is indispensable for anyone interested in the evolution of poetry and the intricate tapestry of ancient Roman life.

Aristoxenus of Tarentum: The Pythagorean Precepts (How to Live a Pythagorean Life) An Edition of and Commentary on the Fragments with an Introduction【電子書籍】[ Carl A. Huffman ]
|

The Pythagorean Precepts by Aristotle's pupil, Aristoxenus of Tarentum, present the principles of the Pythagorean way of life that Plato praised in the Republic. They are our best guide to what it meant to be a Pythagorean in the time of Plato and Aristotle. The Precepts have been neglected in modern scholarship and this is the first full edition and translation of and commentary on all the surviving fragments. The introduction provides an accessible overview of the ethical system of the Precepts and their place not only in the Pythagorean tradition but also in the history of Greek ethics as a whole. The Pythagoreans thought that human beings were by nature insolent and excessive and that they could only be saved from themselves if they followed a strictly structured way of life. The Precepts govern every aspect of life, such as procreation, abortion, child rearing, friendship, religion, desire and even diet.

Fragments of Grace【電子書籍】[ Pamela Constable ]
|
For four and a half years, Pamela Constable, a veteran foreign correspondent and award-winning author, has traveled through South Asia on assignment for the Washington Post. Following religious conflicts, political crises, and natural disasters, she also searched for signs of humanity and dignity in societies rife with violence, poverty, prejudice, and greed.

In Afghanistan, she made numerous visits while the country suffered under the hostile rule of the Taliban, attempted to reach the capital in a convoy that was ambushed and saw four journalists killed. She finally moved to Kabul in late 2001 to chronicle the country?s post-Taliban rebirth. In Pakistan, she covered a military coup in 1999, immersed herself in the mys-terious world of Muslim mosques and academies, and discovered both the extremist and tolerant faces of Islam. In India, she attended one of the largest spiritual gatherings of Hindu pilgrims in history and then rushed to the horrific aftermath of a devastating earthquake. She repeatedly visited the Kashmir Valley, where Pakistani-backed Muslim guerrillas are waging a seemingly endless war with Indian security forces. In Nepal, she covered the crown prince?s massacre of the royal family and journeyed to remote villages where communist rebels brought rigid moral order to life. In Sri Lanka, she explored a tropical paradise where reclusive insurgents trained children to become suicide bombers in pursuit of a utopian ethnic homeland.

Between extended sojourns in South Asia, Constable returned to the West to reflect on the risks and rewards of her profession, revisit her roots, and compare her experiences with Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. Her book is a uniquely personal exploration of the rich but solitary life of a foreign correspondent, set against a regional backdrop of extraordinary political and religious tumult.

The Pictorial Key to the Tarot Being fragments of a Secret Tradition under the Veil of Divination【電子書籍】[ Arthur Edward Waite ]
|

Arthur Edward Waite was a noted and controversial christian mystic and occultist. This book describes how to use the Rider-Waite deck, a divinatory tarot deck. A difference from Marseilles style decks is that Waite use scenes with esoteric meanings on the suit cards. These esoteric, or divinatory meanings were derived in great part from the writings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn group, of which Waite had been a member. The meanings and many of the illustrations showed the influence of astrology as well as Qabalistic principles. It has been one of the most popular Tarots for many years.
Excerpt: “The Tarot embodies symbolical presentations of universal ideas, behind which lie all the implicits of the human mind, and it is in this sense that they contain secret doctrine, which is the realisation by the few of truths imbedded in the consciousness of all, though they have not passed into express recognition by ordinary men. The theory is that this doctrine has always existedーthat is to say, has been excogitated in the consciousness of an elect minority; that it has been perpetuated in secrecy from one to another and has been recorded in secret literatures, like those of Alchemy and Kabalism; that it is contained also in those Instituted Mysteries of which Rosicrucianism offers an example near to our hand in the past, and Craft Masonry a living summary, or general memorial, for those who can interpret its real meaning.”

The Lost and Hostile Gospels An Essay on the Toledoth Jeschu, and the Petrine and Pauline Gospels of the First Three Centuries of Which Fragments Remain【電子書籍】[ S. Baring-Gould ]
|

In "The Lost and Hostile Gospels," S. Baring-Gould embarks on a rigorous examination of early Christian texts that exist outside the canonical New Testament. This seminal work delves into apocryphal and heretical gospels, offering readers a rich tapestry of theological diversity and historical context that challenges the orthodox interpretations of Christianity. Baring-Gould employs a critical yet accessible literary style, blending scholarly rigor with engaging prose, as he uncovers the narratives that were overshadowed by accepted doctrine. Through meticulous analysis, he situates these texts within their socio-political milieu, providing vital insights into the complexities of early Christian beliefs and their evolution. S. Baring-Gould was a polymath with diverse interests including theology, folklore, and literature, which undoubtedly influenced his approach to this work. His expansive knowledge and fervent curiosity stemmed from a desire to uncover the marginalized voices of Christianity's past, spurred by a belief that understanding these perspectives is essential to comprehending contemporary faith. Drawing from his background as a journalist and an author, Baring-Gould weaves together historical narrative and personal reflection, creating a compelling argument for the relevance of these forgotten texts. I highly recommend "The Lost and Hostile Gospels" to scholars, students, and anyone interested in the complexities of religious thought. This book not only illuminates lesser-known Christian texts but also invites critical reflection on the nature of belief itself, making it a significant contribution to the study of religious history and theology.

Fragments of Parmenides【電子書籍】[ A. H. Coxon ]
|

This book is a revised and expanded version of A.H. Coxon's full critical edition of the extant remains of Parmenides of Elea-the fifth-century B.C. philosopher by many considered "e;one of the greatest and most astonishing thinkers of all times."e; (Karl Popper) Coxon's presentation of the complete ancient evidence for Parmenides and his comprehensive examination of the fragments, unsurpassed to this day, have proven invaluable to our understanding of the Eleatic since the book's first publication in 1986. This edition, edited by Richard McKirahan and with a new preface by Malcolm Schofield, is released on the 100th anniversary of Coxon's birth. This new edition for the first time includes English translations of the testimonia and of any Ancient Greek throughout the book, as well as an English/Greek glossary by Richard McKirahan, and revisions by the late author himself. The text consists of Coxon's collations of the relevant folios of manuscripts of Sextus Empiricus, Proclus and Simplicius and includes all extant fragments, a commentary, the testimonia, a complete list of sources, linguistic parallels from both earlier and later authors, and the fullest critical apparatus that has appeared since Diels' Poetarum Philosophorum Fragmenta (1901). The collection of testimonia includes the philosophical discussions of Parmenides by Plato, Aristotle and the Neoplatonists, most of which had been omitted by Diels. The introduction discusses the history of the text, the language and form of the poem, Parmenides' use and understanding of the verb 'to be', his place in the history of earlier and later philosophy and the biographical tradition. In the commentary Coxon deals in detail with both the language and the subject matter of the poem and pays full attention to Parmenides' account of the physical world. The appendix relates later Eleatic arguments to those of Parmenides.

WHOLE How I Learned to Fill the Fragments of My Life with Forgiveness, Hope, Strength, and Creativity【電子書籍】[ Melissa Moore ]
|

A five-point plan to usher you through heartache and toward a stronger, healthier place.

“I know how to kill someone and get away with it.” The words spoken by her father when Melissa was a teen haunt her to this day. Two years later, after confessing that he was the serial killer nationally known as the Happy Face Killer, Keith Jesperson was arrested for the murder of eight women. The pain, guilt, and shame that followed her father’s conviction stigmatized Melissa for years until she figured out a way to use her emotions as fuel to free herself from self-imposed limits and set out on a journey to rebuild her fragmented life.

Through her work as an Emmy-nominated investigative journalist, television host, educator, and advocate, Melissa created WHOLE, a five-step program to better develop her own approach to healing: Watch the Storm, Heal Your Heart, Open Your Mind, Leverage Your Power, and Elevate Your Spirit.

Among other things, she found that the commitment to your core values makes all the difference in getting unstuck; that forgiveness gives the greatest chance of making a future not defined by the past; that there is great value in vulnerability; that creativity is essential to living a full life; and that hope is the basis for everything we feel, believe, and do.

In each phase of the program, Melissa inspires you to embrace your past to find wholeness within the parts of your life that you believe to be “broken.” If you are stuck in the rut of a painful experienceーwhether depression, trauma, pain, fear, addiction, or guiltーyou will find comfort in this book’s advice, self-evaluation, and action plans.

WHOLE is a powerful journey of recovery and awakening that reframes the pain experience so it can be used as a way to invite understanding, growth, and transformation into your life.
