Time and Free Will essay deals with the problem of free will, which Bergson contends is merely a common confusion among philosophers caused by an illegitimate translation of the unextended into the extended, as a means of introducing his theory of duration, which would become highly influential among continental philosophers in the following century.

THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL Luther's Reply to Erasmus' On Free Will【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]

|

In 'The Bondage of the Will', Martin Luther explores the theology of predestination and free will, engaging in a theological debate with Erasmus over the nature of human choice and God's sovereignty. Written in a clear and persuasive style, Luther presents his arguments with biblical references and logical reasoning, making it a seminal work in the development of Protestant theology. The book is a crucial text in understanding the Reformation movement and its implications on Christian beliefs. The arguments presented are structured and thought-provoking, challenging readers to reexamine their views on salvation and human agency. Martin Luther, a German theologian and key figure in the Protestant Reformation, wrote 'The Bondage of the Will' in response to Erasmus' views on free will. Luther's background as a monk and scholar influenced his strong convictions on the relationship between God's grace and human obedience, shaping his theological writings. I highly recommend 'The Bondage of the Will' to readers interested in philosophy, theology, and the history of Christianity. Luther's insights into the complexities of divine sovereignty and human will offer valuable perspectives on faith and salvation.

Chosen From The Foundation of The World Part 1 - An Examination of the concepts of Man's Free Will, Choice, And the Sovereignty of God【電子書籍】[ Wendell Wyman Bonner Ph.D. ]
|

I can remember growing up in the southern United States, ensconced in the wonderful Black Baptist tradition, that I kept hearing teachers and saints tell me that we have free will to decide whether to obey God. I firmly believed that and thought that the decision to follow Christ was mine and mine alone. I thought of God as standing there waiting for me to decide to follow and obey Him. The key was always that God was waiting on me to decide if I want Him or not.

Then I became acquainted with scripture speaking about God's sovereignty. In learning more about this concept, I learned how God's sovereignty means that He is always in control of all things. The fact that He is in control of all things kept hitting a snag in my mind. How is He in control if I have "free will"?

As I continued to grow in the faith of Jesus Christ and in the fellowship of the Word of God, I noticed how so many scriptures spoke to God's sovereignty over everything and everyone. I could not reconcile this sovereignty that the Bible spoke of with the fact that I had autonomy in choosing to follow Him or not. In my mind, either God has control over all things and all people, or He doesn't. If He is waiting on me to decide to follow Him, then it seemed to me that He did not control that decision, but I did.

This created a dichotomy of dissenting opinions in my mind. God has control, but only until it comes to me choosing Him. If that be the case, He is not in control of everything. If it is not the case, then where does human "free will" fit in?

The more I sought the scriptures to find some reconciliation between these two opposing opinions in my mind, the more the question began burrowing in my brain. That question was, "Is God really in control of everything?" He cannot be both depending on me and in control at the same time. This inspired and catalyzed a serious investigation into the concepts of God's sovereignty and man's free will. What does God's sovereignty entail? What is the extent of man's free will?

This first volume initiates this investigation into the concepts of God's sovereignty and man's free will. Are they compatible? Are they antithetical? What is the meaning of "free will," and where did that concept come from? Is it biblically based and supported as we believe it to mean? What does God's sovereignty mean based on the Word of God? Welcome to this journey of discovery.

Physics and Free Will The Science of Libertarian Freedom【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey Koperski ]
|

Can libertarian free will survive our best physical theories? While prominent physicists argue that genuine agency contradicts science, this book demonstrates that contemporary physics actually provides robust foundations for human freedom.

Physics and Free Will rigorously navigates the complex intersection of physical theory and the free will debate. Koperski begins by clarifying determinism’s scientific foundations before systematically addressing challenges from special relativity and refuting physics-based arguments against mind-body dualism. Drawing on insights from continuum mechanics and condensed matter physics, he reveals how multiscale systems exhibit the emergence of causally efficacious properties irreducible to their micro-constituents. Using these insights, Koperski develops a framework that preserves libertarian intuitions about genuine choice while remaining consistent with physical theory. Through meticulous examination of determinism, reductionism, and the causal closure of physics, this comprehensive work reveals how contemporary science’s recognition of emergent causation provides ample space for genuine human agency.

This book will be essential for researchers and graduate students in metaphysics, philosophy of physics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of mind, and for anyone seeking to understand how contemporary science reshapes rather than eliminates the possibility of free will.

Dialogues on Free Will【電子書籍】[ Laura W. Ekstrom ]
|

What kinds of conversations might take place when two intelligent and informed young people ? one a strong believer in free will and the other just as certain that we don’t have it ? get together to discuss their viewpoints? This new volume in the Philosophical Dialogues on Contemporary Problems series introduces both sides of this age-old philosophical debate in a fun and accessible way.

Author and acclaimed philosopher Laura W. Ekstrom has created Rosa and Leif, two college students, who each give voice to the strongest arguments in the most important debates about free will and moral responsibility. Over the course of eleven days, Rosa, a strong defender of free will, draws on her religious beliefs and her thoughts about love and meaning in human life. Leif, her equally informed and articulate interlocutor, raises challenges to Rosa’s points, drawing on the latest research and ideas in neuroscience, theology, and social psychology. Along the way, they must carefully develop clear reasons for their positions, while offering a fair hearing to alternative viewpoints and spurring readers to reach their own conclusions.

Working in a philosophical tradition established by Plato, these dialogues are both philosophically substantive and provocative, inviting readers to ponder issues that are fundamental to our understanding of the nature of choice, responsibility, and ourselves as human beings.

Privatizing Justice Ai Mega-consciousness, the End of Free Will【電子書籍】[ Obdulio Ortega Esquivias ]
|

?In the not-so-distant future, will justice be an algorithm? This book explores one of the most urgent questions of our time, delving into the Artificial Intelligence revolution and its profound implications for society, freedom, and the very essence of what it means to be human.

Prepare for a journey that dismantles the ideal of traditional democracy to confront us with a new reality: a privatized justice system, sustained by an omnipresent and omniscient AI Megaconsciousness. Discover how this technology could eradicate bias and corruption, but also how its capacity to predict and shape human behavior will pose unprecedented ethical dilemmas. Can we be 'guilty' of a crime before we commit it? And what happens to our free will when our most intimate thoughts are the raw material for an ever-evolving 'Tin God'?

This book not only addresses the future of justice and digital privacy; it also delves into the ancient roots of justice, such as that of the Harakbut people, contrasting their wisdom with the cold logic of algorithms. It reflects on 'orgasmic magic' and 'creation without love' as metaphors for human degeneration in a world where pleasure without purpose leads us to precarity.

Through insightful analysis, the complexities of data capitalism, mass surveillance, and the unsettling possibility of our consciousnesses being exploited for profit or control are revealed. Who will hold power in this new era: a global dictator wielding AI as a weapon, or a unified humanity using it as an intangible good?

This is a call to action and critical reflection. An essential read to understand how Artificial Intelligence is redefining every aspect of our existence, from our identity to our most intimate interactions. Are we ready for the twilight of free will and the emergence of a justice without victims but also without human grace?

Immerse yourself in these pages and discover why the time to privatize justice is not just a question, but a reality already transforming our world."

God Reforms Hearts Rethinking Free Will and the Problem of Evil【電子書籍】[ Thaddeus Williams ]
|

"When responding to objections that both evil and God can exist, many resort to a "free will defense," where God is not the creator of evil but of human freedom, by which evil is possible. In God Reforms Hearts, Thaddeus J. Williams offers a friendly challenge to the central claim of the free will defense-that love is possible only with true (or libertarian) free will. Williams argues that much thinking on free will fails to carve out the necessary distinction between an autonomous will and an unforced will. With clarity, precision, and charity, he judges the merits and shortcomings of the relational free will defense while offering a philosophically and biblically robust alternative that draws from theologians of the past to point a way forward"--

Why is there so much controversy over free will throughout church history? R. C. Sproul finds that Christians have often been influenced by pagan views of the human will that deny the effects of Adam's fall. In Willing to Believe, Sproul traces the free-will controversy from its formal beginning in the fifth century, with the writings of Augustine and Pelagius, to the present. Readers will gain understanding into the nuances separating the views of Protestants and Catholics, Calvinists and Arminians, and Reformed and Dispensationalists. This book, like Sproul's Faith Alone, is a major work on an essential evangelical tenet.

The interviewees, ranging from major philosophers to renowned scientists, talk candidly with Blackmore about some of the key philosophical issues confronting us in a series of conversations that are revealing, insightful, and stimulating. They ruminate on the nature of consciousness (is it something apart from the brain?) and discuss if it is even possible to understand the human mind. Some of these thinkers say no, but most believe that we will pierce the mystery surrounding consciousness, and that neuroscience will provide the key. Blackmore goes beyond the issue of consciousness to ask other intriguing questions: Is there free will? (A question which yields many conflicted replies, with most saying yes and no.) If not, how does this effect the way you live your life; and more broadly, how has your work changed the way you live?Paired with an introduction and extensive glossary that provide helpful background information, these provocative conversations illuminate how some of the greatest minds tackle some of the most difficult questions about human nature.

Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will著者: Robert M Sapolsky出版社: Penguin Books出版日: 2024年10月15日新しい本新古品・未使用品。 The instant New York Times bestseller "Excellent...Outstanding for its breadth of research, the liveliness of the writing, and the depth of humanity it conveys." - Wall Street Journal One of our great behavioral scientists, the bestselling author of Behave, plumbs the depths of the science and philosophy of decision-making to mount a devastating case against free will, an argument with profound consequences Robert Sapolsky's Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do. Determined offers a marvelous synthesis of what we know about how consciousness works--the tight weave between reason and emotion and between stimulus and response in the moment and over a life. One by one, Sapolsky tackles all the major arguments for free will and takes them out, cutting a path through the thickets of chaos and complexity science and quantum physics, as well as touching ground on some of the wilder shores of philosophy. He shows us that the history of medicine is in no small part the history of learning that fewer and fewer things are somebody's "fault"; for example, for centuries we thought seizures were a sign of demonic possession. Yet, as he acknowledges, it's very hard, and at times impossible, to uncouple from our zeal to judge others and to judge ourselves. Sapolsky applies the new understanding of life beyond free will to some of our most essential questions around punishment, morality, and living well together. By the end, Sapolsky argues that while living our daily lives recognizing that we have no free will is going to be monumentally difficult, doing so is not going to result in anarchy, pointlessness, and existential malaise. Instead, it will make for a much more humane world.

The Principles of All: Free Will is the fifth volume in Adrian Rowe's profound series on the nature of existence and consciousness.

Where Unity revealed the indivisible Whole, Fractal Unfolding showed its infinite patterns, Levels of Awareness explored the spectrum of perception, and Guidance uncovered the compass of impulses, this book turns to the living heart of the journey: choice.

The verses remind us: "Our higher and lower selves speak to us through impulses… Align the selves and experience the next level of will."

Impulses rise within us ー some fleeting, others enduring. They arrive unbidden, yet they do not dictate our lives. What matters is how we respond. Free will is not control over everything, nor the absence of influence, but the sacred art of improvisation: shaping impulses and events into the life we choose to live.

Drawing from philosophy, psychology, science, and metaphysics, Rowe reveals how freedom emerges in the space between impulse and action. From the Stoic teaching of response, to existentialist responsibility, to Taoist flow, the same truth resounds: life plays its music, but you are free to choose your dance.

With practices and parables, Free Will invites readers to discover freedom not as theory, but as lived reality ー in each breath, each choice, each improvisation.

Former evangelical minister Dan Barker (God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction) unveils a novel solution to the question that has baffled scientists and philosophers for millennia. He outlines the concept of what he calls “harmonic free will,” a two-dimensional perspective that pivots the paradox on its axis to show that there is no single answerーboth sides are right. Grace, Free Will, and Salvation: Aquinas on Human Freedom and Divine Providence【電子書籍】[ Oscar Lawson ]
|

This book offers a definitive exploration of one of Christianity's most profound mysteries ー how divine grace and human freedom coexist within the journey toward salvation. Drawing on the timeless insights of Thomas Aquinas, this richly detailed volume unpacks his masterful synthesis of theology and philosophy, revealing how grace empowers but never overrides free will, and how God's providential care orders human choices toward ultimate fulfillment.

Blending historical context, rigorous analysis of primary texts, and engagement with centuries of theological debate, the book guides readers through the essential doctrines of justification, merit, predestination, and the beatific vision. It addresses longstanding controversies such as Pelagianism and semi-Pelagianism, and demonstrates Aquinas's enduring relevance for contemporary theology, spirituality, and philosophy of freedom.

Perfect for scholars, clergy, and serious students of theology, this book illuminates the dynamic interplay between God's sovereign grace and genuine human freedom ー a relationship that shapes the Christian understanding of morality, salvation, and the deepest longings of the human heart. With accessible yet erudite prose, it invites readers into a transformative journey through grace, offering clarity on complex doctrines and inspiring a renewed appreciation for the mystery of salvation as a divine-human partnership.

〓? "I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man." So begins one of the most unsettling and powerful monologues in literature. Notes from Underground is Fyodor Dostoevsky's philosophical tour de forceーa bold rejection of rationalism and utopian thinking, narrated by an unnamed, bitter, and self-loathing narrator 〓〓〓. Set in St. Petersburg, this novella shatters Enlightenment optimism and dives deep into the irrational human psyche. It's a psychological warzone of contradiction, freedom, and sufferingーlaying the groundwork for modern existentialism. Why thinkers and readers keep coming back: ? "The blueprint of existential thought before Sartre and Camus." ? "Unmatched psychological depth and philosophical daring." ? A vital read for those who question society, logic, and even themselves 〓〓〓? This enhanced edition includes: 〓 Introductory essay on Dostoevsky's philosophical context 〓 Minimalist illustrations to enhance the atmosphere 〓 Kindle-smart navigation for a seamless reading experience 〓 Download Notes from Underground now and confront the twisted brilliance of a mind at war with itself.

The Fairy Godmother Diaries Memoirs, Magic and the Curse of Free Will【電子書籍】[ Poppy Oddwood ]

|

What happens when a fairy godmother's tell-all memoir breaks the very magic that keeps fairy tales running?

Mavis Glitterweather thought retirement would be all tea and tranquility. She was wrong. Dead wrong. Catastrophically, princes-throwing-shoes-at-her-head wrong.

After decades of waving wands and granting wishes, Mavis decided to write a memoir exposing the messy reality behind those perfect "happily ever afters." The Fine Print of Fairy Tales was meant to be a harmless tell-all about magical mishaps and the bureaucracy of wish-granting.

Instead, it's unleashed complete chaos.

Cinderella's having an existential crisis about glass footwear and workplace rights for mice. Sleeping Beauty hasn't slept in days and has started fourteen new hobbies (she's terrible at all of them). Snow White's gone full investigative journalist, hacking magical mirror networks and exposing corruption in the Fairy Tale Guild.

And they're all coming for Mavis.

Because her memoir didn't just spill royal secretsーit broke the magical programming that's been controlling fairy tale characters for centuries.

Now the Guild of Magical Narratives wants her memory wiped, angry princesses are throwing conjured shoes, and the entire fairy tale world is teetering between predetermined perfection and messy, complicated free will.

Armed with nothing but her sarcastic wand Snarkle, a neurotic goat with hygiene issues, and a kleptomaniac crow who thinks everything shiny belongs to him, Mavis must fix what she's broken. Even if it means giving up everything she's ever known about magic.

Because sometimes the most magical thing you can do is let people write their own stories.
