Recoding America Why Government Is Failing in the Digital Age and How We Can Do Better【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Pahlka ]

Government at all levels has limped into the digital age, offering online services that can feel even more cumbersome than the paperwork that preceded them and widening the gap between the policy outcomes we intend and what we get.

But it’s not more money or more tech we need. Government is hamstrung by a rigid, industrial-era culture, in which elites dictate policy from on high, disconnected from and too often disdainful of the details of implementation. Lofty goals morph unrecognizably as they cascade through a complex hierarchy. But there is an approach taking hold that keeps pace with today’s world and reclaims government for the people it is supposed to serve. Jennifer Pahlka shows why we must stop trying to move the government we have today onto new technology and instead consider what it would mean to truly recode American government.

CAREER GUIDANCE OR THE ART OF NOT FAILING A fine analysis of the range of the best methods to make the wrong choice【電子書籍】[ Philippe Vivier ]

This in-depth analysis sheds light on the aberrations and well-kept secrets of the small world of vocational and career guidance professionals. Chances are they won't like it, and it'll be reflected in the comments! Do you want to know what's what with all those career methods and which one to choose ? Concerned about the emotional and financial cost of a poor choice or a university drop out? Philippe Vivier, career coach for over 19 years, uses examples to describe and dissect the most common misconceptions and obnoxious tricks of the guidance sector, as well as the problems associated with the skills of the interveners.

In this pamphlet, he explores and compares, in a simple and sensible way, the limits and results you can expect from the different methods, from career guidance, to vocational tests and career assessments to guidance counseling and coaching.

It examines and shows which methods really help you "choose" a profession and career, and which you should absolutely avoid.

It's a serious subject, but you can expect to laugh once or twice, at least that's what he hopes.

To be the big winner of this game in which you bet your professional life, read this pamphlet!

Is this book totally exhaustive in the absolute sense of the word?

No, it's about getting to the heart of the matter and answering the most pressing questions of parents and students by taking into account the most representative existing methods. There was no question of going through all the new methods with nebulous foundations of every individual who thinks they have an original idea or simply in search of a secondary source of income.

Is this analysis meant to be scientific?

No, it's not, and it's important that it's a pleasant read for everyone, but it's based on real, observable facts and elements, and presented as we go along. You'll be the judge of the relevance of the comments and arguments.

If only it were possible to set up serious orientation experiments conducted by psychology researchers, with controllable variables and 20-year follow-up, on a sufficiently representative sample of students. One assumes then that the institution, thanks to the work of experts from state research centers, would have published a guide for the public based on these long ago, indicating the rules to be respected in guidance matters, to offset possible abuses by unscrupulous individuals or private organizations.

So what can you expect from this book?

A detailed analysis of guidance methods, their limitations and their benefits, so that you stop being fooled, focusing on the essentials and answering just one question: what is the best guidance method?

Because our time is precious.

“An essential title for anyone thinking of law school or concerned with America's dysfunctional legal system.” ーLibrary Journal

On the surface, law schools today are thriving. Enrollments are on the rise and law professors are among the highest paid. Yet behind the flourishing facade, law schools are failing abjectly. Recent front-page stories have detailed widespread dubious practices, including false reporting of LSAT and GPA scores, misleading placement reports, and the fundamental failure to prepare graduates to enter the profession.

Addressing all these problems and more is renowned legal scholar Brian Z. Tamanaha. Piece by piece, Tamanaha lays out the how and why of the crisis and the likely consequences if the current trend continues. The out-of-pocket cost of obtaining a law degree at many schools now approaches $200,000. The average law school graduate’s debt is around $100,000ーthe highest it has ever beenーwhile the legal job market is the worst in decades.

Growing concern with the crisis in legal education has led to high-profile coverage in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, and many observers expect it soon will be the focus of congressional scrutiny. Bringing to the table his years of experience from within the legal academy, Tamanaha provides the perfect resource for assessing what’s wrong with law schools and figuring out how to fix them.

“Failing Law Schools presents a comprehensive case for the negative side of the legal education debate and I am sure that many legal academics and every law school dean will be talking about it.” ーStanley Fish, Florida International University College of Law

Why International Cooperation is Failing How the Clash of Capitalisms Undermines the Regulation of Finance【電子書籍】[ Thomas Kalinowski ]

Since the global financial crisis of 2008/09, international cooperation has failed to curb volatile financial markets. Changes in the global rules of finance discussed in the G20 during the last decade remain limited, and it is uncertain whether they are suitable to help mitigate and manage future crises to come. This book offers an alternative to the popular notion that this failure is the result of the 'nature' of the international system, the clash of national egoisms, or lack of leadership. It instead investigates problems of international cooperation by looking at their deeper structural origins in the competition of different models of capitalism. US finance-led, EU integration-led, and East Asian state-led capitalism complement each other globally but have conflicting preferences on how to regulate international finance. This interdependence of capitalist models is relatively stable but also prone to crises caused by volatile financial flows, global economic imbalances, and 'currency wars'. By bringing together approaches from International Political Economy and Comparative Capitalism, this book shows that regulating international finance is not a technocratic exercise of fine-tuning the machinery of international institutions, but rather a political process. International cooperation can only be successful if it goes hand in hand with deep domestic changes in each of these capitalist models.

Failing Our Fathers Confronting the Crisis of Economically Vulnerable Nonresident Fathers【電子書籍】[ Ronald B. Mincy ]

Maligned as "deadbeat dads" or sexually and financially irresponsible inner-city fathers and overlooked in discussions of poverty and family policy, economically vulnerable nonresident fathers are a greatly misunderstood population. Failing Our Fathers summarizes the most recent quantitative and qualitative research, and undertakes new analyses to fill in important gaps, to produce a comprehensive picture of who these fathers are, what types of relationships they have with their families and children, and the challenges they face meeting what their loved ones and taxpayers expect from them. The great majority of these men see their children on a regular basis, despite the financial, legal, and extra-legal barriers they face. Besides requiring fathers to support their children, we must enable them to do so by supplementing their earnings and supporting their co-parenting, in ways that parallel how we require and enable vulnerable single mothers to support their children. The book lays out specific reforms required to achieve this goal as well as tips for those resources for economically vulnerable nonresident fathers.

The New Urban Crisis How Our Cities Are Increasing Inequality, Deepening Segregation, and Failing the Middle Class-and What We Can Do About It【電子書籍】[ Richard Florida ]

In recent years, the young, educated, and affluent have surged back into cities, reversing decades of suburban flight and urban decline. And yet all is not well, Richard Florida argues in The New Urban Crisis. Florida, one of the first scholars to anticipate this back-to-the-city movement in his groundbreaking The Rise of the Creative Class, demonstrates how the same forces that power the growth of the world's superstar cities also generate their vexing challenges: gentrification, unaffordability, segregation, and inequality. Meanwhile, many more cities still stagnate, and middle-class neighborhoods everywhere are disappearing. Our winner-take-all cities are just one manifestation of a profound crisis in today's urbanized knowledge economy.

A bracingly original work of research and analysis, The New Urban Crisis offers a compelling diagnosis of our economic ills and a bold prescription for more inclusive cities capable of ensuring growth and prosperity for all.

Failing Upwards is the classic coming of age story. Sort of. I spent a decade of my life depressed, angry and aimless. I responded to that with an amoral hedonism that at times, flirted with nihilism. At some point in that decade, something interesting happened-I realized I had an exceptional talent for being a troublemaker. What began as a response to discomfort with myself and the world around me, turned into intentional lifestyle choices. Failing Upwards is about how a Catholic schoolboy morphed into a clove smoking, whiskey spilling, licentious degenerate. Grab a seat. Grab a drink. These are the stories from a life lived questionably.

Education Disrupted Strategies for Saving Our Failing Schools【電子書籍】[ Les Stein ]

Failing schools have become the latest academic cottage industry, and they serve as lightning rods for the controversy that continues to surround the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Surprisingly, there are only a handful of books that address the topic of turning around failing schools and even fewer that provide a meaningful discussion on how individual schools should avoid failure from the outset.

This book will help public school educators understand that turnaround efforts are based on sound leadership principles ? nothing more, nothing less. It also provides school leaders with the critical skills to turn around failing schools and, more importantly, prevent their schools from failing in the first place.

Individual chapters address topics such as setting institutional priorities, establishing a positive school culture, improving communications, developing classroom leadership, putting the school on a sound financial footing, and using data to guide the school turnaround. In essence, this book serves as a practical guide for instructional and institutional leaders on how to make a "real” difference in the success of our nation's schools.

Divided Nations: Why global governance is failing, and what we can do about it Why global governance is failing, and what we can do about it【電子書籍】[ Ian Goldin ]

With rapid globalization, the world is more deeply interconnected than ever before. While this has its advantages, it also brings with it systemic risks that are only just being identified and understood. Rapid urbanization, together with technological leaps, such as the Internet, mean that we are now physically and virtually closer than ever in humanity's history. We face a number of international challenges - climate change, finance, pandemics, cyber security, and migration - which spill over national boundaries. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the UN, the IMF, the World Bank - bodies created in a very different world, more than 60 years ago - are inadequate for the task of managing such risk in the 21st century. Ian Goldin explores whether the answer is to reform the existing structures, or to consider a new and radical approach. By setting out the nature of the problems and the various approaches to global governance, Goldin highlights the challenges that we are to overcome and considers a road map for the future.

Failing Sideways Queer Possibilities for Writing Assessment【電子書籍】[ Stephanie West-Puckett ]

Failing Sideways is an innovative and fresh approach to assessment that intersects writing studies, educational measurement, and queer rhetorics. While valuing and representing the research, theory, and practice of assessment, authors Stephanie West-Puckett, Nicole I. Caswell, and William P. Banks demonstrate the ways that students, teachers, and other interested parties can find joy and justice in the work of assessment.

A failure-oriented assessment model unsettles some of the most common practices, like rubrics and portfolios, and challenges many deeply held assumptions about validity and reliability in order to ask what could happen if assessment was oriented toward possibility and potential. Working to engage a more capacious writing construct, the authors propose queer validity inquiry (QVI) as a model for assessment that values failure, affect, identity, and materiality. These overlapping lenses help teachers honor parts of writing and learning that writing studies faculty have struggled to hold onto in a world overly focused on quickness and efficiency in schools.

Through programmatic and classroom examples, Failing Sideways privileges what is valued in the classroom but traditionally ignored in assessments. Reimagining what matters in the teaching and learning of writing and using assessment data differently, this book demonstrates what writing can be and could do in a more diverse and just world.

Passed On Public School Children in Failing American Schools【電子書籍】[ Louise Marr ]

A teacher reveals how current education policy is failing our kids through stories of her own students in the public schools of Philadelphia.

Since the passing of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001, American schools have emphasized test scores to measure school performanceーforcing educators to “teach to the test.” Though teachers have fought to get rid of this detrimental trend, many corporate reformers turn a blind eye to the real problems teachers face today: classrooms filled with pregnant teens and children who cannot read beyond the third grade; violent neighborhood schools that are dangerously underfunded and underprepared to deal with their daily heartaches.

Passed On presents an honest and intimate portrait of the classroom experience in America’s failing school. Through stories of her own students in Philadelphiaーwhere violent crime is common and the poverty rate is highーLouise Marr reveals how the current corporate reform movement misunderstands what teachers and students need to succeed. Marr outlines the real problems in the schools today, offering a much-needed frontline perspective in the current school reform debates.

Searching for Hope Life at a Failing School in the Heart of America【電子書籍】[ Matthew Tully ]

“A gritty, wonderfully honest investigation of life in an urban American high school in the 21st Century.” ーJay Mathews, Washington Post education columnist

Searching for Hope is a gripping account of life in a once-great high school in a rough Indianapolis neighborhood. Granted unfiltered access to Manual High throughout an entire school year, award-winning journalist Matthew Tully tells the complex story of the everyday drama, failures, and triumphs in one of the nation’s many troubled urban public high schools. He walks readers into classrooms, offices, and hallways, painting a vivid picture of the profound academic problems, deep frustrations, and apathy that absorb and sometimes consume students, teachers, and administrators. Yet this intimate view also reveals the hopes, dreams, and untapped talents of some amazing individuals. Providing insights into the challenges confronting those who seek to improve the quality of America’s schools, Tully argues that school leaders and policy makers must rally communities to heartfelt engagement with their schools if the crippling social and economic threats to cities such as Indianapolis are to be averted.

“[W]hile the book offers no unfamiliar insight into the plight of urban schools, it does give a powerful, ultimately genuine voice to the complicated, imperfect individuals whose victories and hopes are often unreported.” ーPublishers Weekly

“[T]his keen observation of teens at a troubled high school makes for fascinating reading.” ーLibrary Journal

Rescue Your Failing Brain Before It's Too Late! Optimize All Hormones. Increase Oxygen and Stimulation. Steady Blood Sugar. Decrease Inflammation. Improve Immunity. Heal Leaky Gut. Swartz M.D. ]

In this book, “RESCUE YOUR FAILING BRAIN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!” you will learn simple action steps to prevent and reverse brain degeneration. It is easy to ignore subtle signs of mental deterioration. But if you don’t take action now, sooner or later you may end up with serious cognitive issues like my mother, who was found by the neighbors wandering around naked in the middle of the night. Act now, before it is too late! We have been taught to believe that nothing can be done once you get Alzheimer’s disease. If told that you have it, you are counseled to get your affairs in order now while you can still make decisions, because you will not be able to make decisions as the disease progresses. Unfortunately, this advice is still being given out. But, it does not have to be true. There is something that we can do. Alzheimer’s disease is not only preventable, but is also reversible, especially in the early stages. Individualized programs can be developed to specifically address each person’s problem areas. We can identify and address the causes. Many of these causes revolve around diet and lifestyle. Common causes include antibiotic use, prediabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. If no action is taken now, your symptoms will probably progress over time. If you notice that you are losing your memory abilities, think about how long you have noticed this and think how much it has progressed over the last year or over the last two years. This is a clue to how fast the brain degeneration is happening. You may notice that the degeneration is speeding up as time goes on. Next year will be even faster. Waiting until your memory declines even further is the worst thing that you can do. This is the mistake made by standard-of-care health care. If you notice symptoms, you must take matters into your own hands and not depend on your primary-care physician to act. If you are determined to get your brain working better, it won’t be hard. With diligent application of the strategies that you will learn in this book, your brain will reverse gears, bursting out of the sickening downhill slide of memory, mood, cognition, energy, and digestion, and into the recovery of lost abilities. Follow the advice given in this book to stop your brain from degenerating further and to begin to rehabilitate your lost brain health. Learn how to prevent and reverse the progression of dementia and other cognitive problems in yourself and in your loved ones.
