Is Democracy Failing? A primer for the 21st century【電子書籍】[ Niheer Dasandi ]

Only four countries around the world do not currently define themselves as democracies. But many more do not fulfil the four basic requirements of democracy: free and fair elections, active participation of citizens in politics, protection of human rights, and the rule of law. Since 2015, far-right and populist politicians have been on the rise throughout the West. Is populism the new face of democracy? Is democracy simply the will of the people? Can any existing government claim to be truly democratic? This captivating, articulate volume explores and interrogates each form of democracy and questions whether they remain fit for purpose today.

Recoding America Why Government Is Failing in the Digital Age and How We Can Do Better【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Pahlka ]

Named one of NPR's Best Books of 2023
Named one of Ezra Klein's "Books That Explain Where We Are in 2023," The New York Times

Learn more about **Jennifer Pahlka's work at recodingamerica.us.

“The book I wish every policymaker would read.”**
Ezra Klein, The New York Times

A bold call to reexamine how our government operatesーand sometimes fails to**ー**from President Obama’s former deputy chief technology officer and the founder of Code for America

Just when we most need our government to workーto decarbonize our infrastructure and economy, to help the vulnerable through a pandemic, to defend ourselves against global threatsーit is faltering. Government at all levels has limped into the digital age, offering online services that can feel even more cumbersome than the paperwork that preceded them and widening the gap between the policy outcomes we intend and what we get.

But it’s not more money or more tech we need. Government is hamstrung by a rigid, industrial-era culture, in which elites dictate policy from on high, disconnected from and too often disdainful of the details of implementation. Lofty goals morph unrecognizably as they cascade through a complex hierarchy. But there is an approach taking hold that keeps pace with today’s world and reclaims government for the people it is supposed to serve. Jennifer Pahlka shows why we must stop trying to move the government we have today onto new technology and instead consider what it would mean to truly recode American government.

Broken Money Why Our Financial System is Failing Us and How We Can Make it Better【電子書籍】[ Lyn Alden ]
|

A Comprehensive Overview of the Past, Present, and Future of Money

Broken Money explores the history of money through the lens of technology. Politics can affect things temporarily and locally, but technology is what drives things forward globally and permanently. The book's goal is for the reader to walk away with a deep understanding of money and monetary history, both in terms of theoretical foundations and in terms of practical implications.

From shells to gold, from papyrus bills of exchange to central banks, and from the invention of the telegraph to the creation of Bitcoin, Lyn Alden walks the reader through the emergence of new technologies that have shaped what we use as money over the ages. And beyond that, Alden explores the concept of what money is at its very foundation to give the reader a framework to analyze and compare different types of monetary technologies and monetary theories.

The book also takes a distinctively human look at how money impacts the lives of real people, and how new monetary technologies shape the power structures within society.

In the modern era, energy abundance and technological enhancements have broadly improved human well-being, but the global monetary system has been slow to keep up. There are over 160 active currencies in the world, each with a local monopoly over its own country, and with little or no acceptance elsewhere. Many of them are rapidly diluted, which continually devalues the savings and the wages of the billions of people who live and work within those jurisdictions. Being born in the "wrong" country makes saving money far harder than it needs to be.

Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people and has averaged 13% annualized inflation over the past decade. Egypt cut its currency in half relative to the dollar twice over the past decade, which instantly devalued the savings and wages of its 100 million citizens. Dozens of countries have experienced at least triple-digit year-over-year inflation within the past four decades, including Brazil that outright hyperinflated in the 1990s while it was the fifth most populous country in the world.

Europe and Japan had $18 trillion worth of negative-yielding bonds in 2019, right before a wave of inflation wiped their purchasing power away. In 2021, the chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve dismissed the idea that the sharp rise in the money supply from the pandemic stimulus would lead to price inflation. By 2022, as major inflation emerged, the chairman rapidly changed his outlook and tightened monetary policy so quickly that it led to the failure of some of the largest banks in the country.

How did we get to this point? Why isn't our money better than this in the 21st century? Broken Money answers these questions by examining the current mix of technology that has led to these limitations, and then explores emerging technologies that may be able to provide us with a monetary system that is fit for the modern era.

|

“An essential title for anyone thinking of law school or concerned with America's dysfunctional legal system.” ーLibrary Journal

On the surface, law schools today are thriving. Enrollments are on the rise and law professors are among the highest paid. Yet behind the flourishing facade, law schools are failing abjectly. Recent front-page stories have detailed widespread dubious practices, including false reporting of LSAT and GPA scores, misleading placement reports, and the fundamental failure to prepare graduates to enter the profession.

Addressing all these problems and more is renowned legal scholar Brian Z. Tamanaha. Piece by piece, Tamanaha lays out the how and why of the crisis and the likely consequences if the current trend continues. The out-of-pocket cost of obtaining a law degree at many schools now approaches $200,000. The average law school graduate’s debt is around $100,000ーthe highest it has ever beenーwhile the legal job market is the worst in decades.

Growing concern with the crisis in legal education has led to high-profile coverage in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, and many observers expect it soon will be the focus of congressional scrutiny. Bringing to the table his years of experience from within the legal academy, Tamanaha provides the perfect resource for assessing what’s wrong with law schools and figuring out how to fix them.

“Failing Law Schools presents a comprehensive case for the negative side of the legal education debate and I am sure that many legal academics and every law school dean will be talking about it.” ーStanley Fish, Florida International University College of Law

Why International Cooperation is Failing How the Clash of Capitalisms Undermines the Regulation of Finance【電子書籍】[ Thomas Kalinowski ]
|

Since the global financial crisis of 2008/09, international cooperation has failed to curb volatile financial markets. Changes in the global rules of finance discussed in the G20 during the last decade remain limited, and it is uncertain whether they are suitable to help mitigate and manage future crises to come. This book offers an alternative to the popular notion that this failure is the result of the 'nature' of the international system, the clash of national egoisms, or lack of leadership. It instead investigates problems of international cooperation by looking at their deeper structural origins in the competition of different models of capitalism. US finance-led, EU integration-led, and East Asian state-led capitalism complement each other globally but have conflicting preferences on how to regulate international finance. This interdependence of capitalist models is relatively stable but also prone to crises caused by volatile financial flows, global economic imbalances, and 'currency wars'. By bringing together approaches from International Political Economy and Comparative Capitalism, this book shows that regulating international finance is not a technocratic exercise of fine-tuning the machinery of international institutions, but rather a political process. International cooperation can only be successful if it goes hand in hand with deep domestic changes in each of these capitalist models.

Rescue Your Failing Brain Before It's Too Late! Optimize All Hormones. Increase Oxygen and Stimulation. Steady Blood Sugar. Decrease Inflammation. Improve Immunity. Heal Leaky Gut. Swartz M.D. ]
|

In this book, “RESCUE YOUR FAILING BRAIN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!” you will learn simple action steps to prevent and reverse brain degeneration. It is easy to ignore subtle signs of mental deterioration. But if you don’t take action now, sooner or later you may end up with serious cognitive issues like my mother, who was found by the neighbors wandering around naked in the middle of the night. Act now, before it is too late! We have been taught to believe that nothing can be done once you get Alzheimer’s disease. If told that you have it, you are counseled to get your affairs in order now while you can still make decisions, because you will not be able to make decisions as the disease progresses. Unfortunately, this advice is still being given out. But, it does not have to be true. There is something that we can do. Alzheimer’s disease is not only preventable, but is also reversible, especially in the early stages. Individualized programs can be developed to specifically address each person’s problem areas. We can identify and address the causes. Many of these causes revolve around diet and lifestyle. Common causes include antibiotic use, prediabetes, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle. If no action is taken now, your symptoms will probably progress over time. If you notice that you are losing your memory abilities, think about how long you have noticed this and think how much it has progressed over the last year or over the last two years. This is a clue to how fast the brain degeneration is happening. You may notice that the degeneration is speeding up as time goes on. Next year will be even faster. Waiting until your memory declines even further is the worst thing that you can do. This is the mistake made by standard-of-care health care. If you notice symptoms, you must take matters into your own hands and not depend on your primary-care physician to act. If you are determined to get your brain working better, it won’t be hard. With diligent application of the strategies that you will learn in this book, your brain will reverse gears, bursting out of the sickening downhill slide of memory, mood, cognition, energy, and digestion, and into the recovery of lost abilities. Follow the advice given in this book to stop your brain from degenerating further and to begin to rehabilitate your lost brain health. Learn how to prevent and reverse the progression of dementia and other cognitive problems in yourself and in your loved ones.

In recent years, the young, educated, and affluent have surged back into cities, reversing decades of suburban flight and urban decline. And yet all is not well, Richard Florida argues in The New Urban Crisis. Florida, one of the first scholars to anticipate this back-to-the-city movement in his groundbreaking The Rise of the Creative Class, demonstrates how the same forces that power the growth of the world's superstar cities also generate their vexing challenges: gentrification, unaffordability, segregation, and inequality. Meanwhile, many more cities still stagnate, and middle-class neighborhoods everywhere are disappearing. Our winner-take-all cities are just one manifestation of a profound crisis in today's urbanized knowledge economy.

A bracingly original work of research and analysis, The New Urban Crisis offers a compelling diagnosis of our economic ills and a bold prescription for more inclusive cities capable of ensuring growth and prosperity for all.

“A gritty, wonderfully honest investigation of life in an urban American high school in the 21st Century.” ーJay Mathews, Washington Post education columnist

Searching for Hope is a gripping account of life in a once-great high school in a rough Indianapolis neighborhood. Granted unfiltered access to Manual High throughout an entire school year, award-winning journalist Matthew Tully tells the complex story of the everyday drama, failures, and triumphs in one of the nation’s many troubled urban public high schools. He walks readers into classrooms, offices, and hallways, painting a vivid picture of the profound academic problems, deep frustrations, and apathy that absorb and sometimes consume students, teachers, and administrators. Yet this intimate view also reveals the hopes, dreams, and untapped talents of some amazing individuals. Providing insights into the challenges confronting those who seek to improve the quality of America’s schools, Tully argues that school leaders and policy makers must rally communities to heartfelt engagement with their schools if the crippling social and economic threats to cities such as Indianapolis are to be averted.

“[W]hile the book offers no unfamiliar insight into the plight of urban schools, it does give a powerful, ultimately genuine voice to the complicated, imperfect individuals whose victories and hopes are often unreported.” ーPublishers Weekly

“[T]his keen observation of teens at a troubled high school makes for fascinating reading.” ーLibrary Journal

Combatting Modern Slavery Why Labour Governance is Failing and What We Can Do About It【電子書籍】[ Genevieve LeBaron ]

Over the last decade, the world’s largest corporations ? from The Coca Cola Company to Amazon, Apple to Unilever ? have taken up the cause of combatting modern slavery. Yet, by most measures, across many sectors and regions, severe labour exploitation continues to soar. Corporate social responsibility is not working. Why?

In this landmark book, Genevieve LeBaron lifts the lid on a labour governance regime that is severely flawed and limited. She takes a close-up look at the millions of corporate dollars spent on anti-slavery networks, NGO partnerships, lobbying for new transparency legislation, and investment in social auditing and ethical certification schemes, to show how such efforts serve to bolster corporate growth and legitimacy as well as government reputations, whilst failing to protect the world’s most vulnerable workers.

To eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking in global supply chains a new approach is needed; one that confronts corporate power and profits, dismantles exploitative business models, and regulates the booming private industry of accounting firms, social auditors, and consultants that has emerged to ‘monitor’ and ‘enforce’ labour standards. Only worker-driven initiatives that uphold fundamental rights can protect workers in the contemporary global economy and make forced labour a thing of the past.

Just Giving Why Philanthropy Is Failing Democracy and How It Can Do Better【電子書籍】[ Rob Reich ]
|

The troubling ethics and politics of philanthropy

Is philanthropy, by its very nature, a threat to today’s democracy? Though we may laud wealthy individuals who give away their money for society’s benefit, Just Giving shows how such generosity not only isn’t the unassailable good we think it to be but might also undermine democratic values and set back aspirations of justice. Big philanthropy is often an exercise of power, the conversion of private assets into public influence. And it is a form of power that is largely unaccountable, often perpetual, and lavishly tax-advantaged. The affluentーand their foundationsーreap vast benefits even as they influence policy without accountability. And small philanthropy, or ordinary charitable giving, can be problematic as well. Charity, it turns out, does surprisingly little to provide for those in need and sometimes worsens inequality.

These outcomes are shaped by the policies that define and structure philanthropy. When, how much, and to whom people give is influenced by laws governing everything from the creation of foundations and nonprofits to generous tax exemptions for donations of money and property. Rob Reich asks: What attitude and what policies should democracies have concerning individuals who give money away for public purposes? Philanthropy currently fails democracy in many ways, but Reich argues that it can be redeemed. Differentiating between individual philanthropy and private foundations, the aims of mass giving should be the decentralization of power in the production of public goods, such as the arts, education, and science. For foundations, the goal should be what Reich terms “discovery,” or long-time-horizon innovations that enhance democratic experimentalism. Philanthropy, when properly structured, can play a crucial role in supporting a strong liberal democracy.

Just Giving investigates the ethical and political dimensions of philanthropy and considers how giving might better support democratic values and promote justice.

Joe Biden Tweets During the First Year of His Failing Presidency, Volume One Reversing Trump, while Dividing and Destroying America, January through June 2021【電子書籍】[ Gary F. Zeolla ]
|

Joseph R. Biden Jr. was inaugurated as President of the United States (POTUS) on January 20, 2021. In his inauguration speech, Biden gave glowing remarks about his goal being to unite America and to “Build Back Better.” But in fact, his main goal seems to have been to reverse everything his predecessor, Donald J. Trump, accomplished during his four years as President. Never mind if a policy was benefiting America, if Trump did it, it had to be reversed. This reversal of Trump’s policies did little to unite and benefit America. Instead, Biden’s policies began alienating the half of Americans who supported Trump for those very policies. By reversing Trump’s beneficial policies, Biden began destroying America, as his presidency began to be failing. Biden’s early actions also set the stage for more failures later in his presidency, so it is important to remember them. On the day Biden was inaugurated, he took over the @POTUS account on Twitter and began tweeting profusely. His tweets promoted his “Build Back Better” policies. But with them being a reversal of Trump’s policies, they were often subtle attacks on Trump and his supporters. This two-volume set reproduces Biden’s tweets for the first year of his presidency. It also includes my comments I posted on Twitter in response to his tweets. Some of my comments were added later and reflect later developments. I have also added an occasional “Extended Comment” to provide further context and commentary to some tweets. This Volume One of this two-volume set records all of Biden’s tweets from January 20, 2021 to the end of July 2021. Volume Two will cover his tweets from the beginning of August 2021 to January 20, 2022.

|

Draws on theology and queer theory to argue for the power of humiliating pleasures in a culture oriented very strongly to denying any enjoyment that is not about success.

Luckily for human diversity, we are perfectly capable of desiring impossible things. Failing Desire explores a particular set of these impossibilities, those connected to humiliation. These include the failure of autonomy in submission, of inward privacy in confession, of visual modesty in exhibition, and of dignity in playing various roles. Historically, those who find pleasure in these failures range from ancient Cynics through early Christian monks to those now drawn by queer or perverse eroticism. As Judith Halberstam pointed out in The Queer Art of Failure, failure can actually be a mode of resistance to demands for what a culture defines as success. Karmen MacKendrick draws on this interest in queer refusals. To value, desire, or seek humiliation undercuts any striving for success, but it draws our attention particularly to the failures of knowledge as a form of power, whether that knowledge is of one body or of a population. How can we understand will that seeks not to govern itself, psychology that constructs inwardness by telling all, blushing shame that delights in exposure, or dignity that refuses its lofty position? Failing Desire suggests that the power of these desires and pleasures comes out of the very realization that this question can never quite be answered.

Failing the Future A Dean Looks at Higher Education in the Twenty-first Century【電子書籍】[ Annette Kolodny ]
|

Both revealing and compelling, Annette Kolodny’s Failing the Future: A Dean Looks at Higher Education in the Twenty-first Century is drawn from the author’s experience as a distinguished teacher, a prize-winning scholar of American literature, a feminist thinker, and an innovative administrator at a major public university. In chapters that range from the changing structure of the American family and its impact on both curriculum and university benefits policies to recommendations for overhauling the culture of decision making on campus, this former Dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona explores the present state of higher education and offers a sobering view of what lies ahead.
In this volume Kolodny explains the reasons for the financial crisis in higher education today and boldly addresses the challenges that remain ignored, including rising birthrates, changing demographics both on campus and across the country, the accelerating globalization of higher education and advanced research, and the necessity for greater interdisciplinarity in undergraduate education. Moreover, while sensitive to the complex burdens placed on faculty today, Kolodny nonetheless reveals how the professoriate has allowed itself to become vulnerable to public misperceptions and to lampooning by the media.
Not simply a book about current problems and future challenges, Failing the Future is rich with practical solutions and workable programs for change. Among her many insights, Kolodny offers a thorough defense of the role of tenure and outlines a new set of procedures to ensure its effective implementation; she proposes a structure for an “Antifeminist Intellectual Harassment Policy”; and she provides a checklist of family-sensitive policies universities can offer their staff, faculty, and administrators. Kolodny calls on union leaders, campus communities, policymakers, and the general public to work together in unprecedented partnerships. Her goal, as she states in a closing coda, is to initiate a revitalized conversation about public education.
This book should be required reading for all those concerned with the future of higher education in this countryーfrom college trustees to graduate students entering the professoriate, from faculty to university administrators, from officers of campus-based unions to education policymakers.

Zaire u.A.).
