Failing Our Fathers Confronting the Crisis of Economically Vulnerable Nonresident Fathers【電子書籍】[ Ronald B. Mincy ]
|

Maligned as "deadbeat dads" or sexually and financially irresponsible inner-city fathers and overlooked in discussions of poverty and family policy, economically vulnerable nonresident fathers are a greatly misunderstood population. Failing Our Fathers summarizes the most recent quantitative and qualitative research, and undertakes new analyses to fill in important gaps, to produce a comprehensive picture of who these fathers are, what types of relationships they have with their families and children, and the challenges they face meeting what their loved ones and taxpayers expect from them. The great majority of these men see their children on a regular basis, despite the financial, legal, and extra-legal barriers they face. Besides requiring fathers to support their children, we must enable them to do so by supplementing their earnings and supporting their co-parenting, in ways that parallel how we require and enable vulnerable single mothers to support their children. The book lays out specific reforms required to achieve this goal as well as tips for those resources for economically vulnerable nonresident fathers.

Failing Forward In Saarland【電子書籍】[ Claudette E. Bouman ]
|

Failing Forward in Saarland is the memoir of a transplanted Canadian with Caribbean roots, venturing with her husband and their daughter into Saarland, Germany. The memoir describes the year the family spent in this small forested land tucked away in the western corner of Germany on the border to France. Her teenage daughter made the daily commute to attend a lyc?e in France and her husband spent most days doing research in labs and forests. What was the mother and wife left to do in the Saarland with next to no knowledge of the German language let alone the Frankish accent? As a career teacher, the author’s life had never before been reduced to awaiting the daily home-coming of daughter and husband. During her year in Saarland, she did much more than that. This book is an entertaining and informative account by an experienced Black teacher of what it means to transplant a family into a foreign country and how to enjoy a welcoming culture.

Most significantly, this memoir is a meaningful addition to the literary corpus focusing on strangers in a strange land. Even though the author is intimately familiar with the notion ー she has lived most of her adult life in Canada, far from her Barbados birthplace ー she immediately faces the challenges of adjusting to the customs of a new land and, especially, learning to communicate in German. And her story is anything but ordinary ー it’s a moving, often amusing, and sometimes humbling account of the author’s adventures and learning experiences in a largely unknown country without the benefit of fluency in the local language. As the title indicates, the author comes to view these challenges ー and even failures ー as positive “life lessons in adaptability, strength, and resilience” ー failing forward.

These Proceedings are from the Fifth Annual Meeting of the American Section of the International Society for Heart Research held at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, September 21-24, 1983. The program and abstracts were published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Vol. 15, Supplement 4, September 1983, Academic Press. This Symposium Proceedings consists of three sections. Section I deals with the mechanical factors and their i'nfluence on coronary blood flow in the normal and failing heart. Section II is developed around the area of vascular smooth muscle and the factors that may control it which ultimately play such an important role in the regulation of coronary blood flow. Section III is primarily devoted to the mechanical aspects of the function of the heart in both hypertrophy and failure including the molecular changes in the myocyte, alterations in neural control, and in inotropic responsiveness of the hypertrophied and failing heart. The editors hope that these three areas encompass a significant body of new and ongoing information that will be helpful to those who work in these areas as well as those who treat patients with varying degrees of myocardial failure or with compromised coronary circulations. The Conservatives Have No Clothes Why Right-Wing Ideas Keep Failing【電子書籍】[ Greg Anrig Jr. ]
|

Why conservatism equals terrible government--and always will.

"Ending the conservative era requires organizing, yes, but also hard thinking and shrewd analysis. When progressives of the future look back at how they triumphed, one of the people they'll thank is Greg Anrig. Drawing inspiration from the work of the early neoconservatives who demolished public support for liberal programs, Anrig casts a sharp eye on conservative ideas and nostrums and shows that many of them simply don't work because they are rooted more in ideological dreams than in reality. Facts are stubborn things, Ronald Reagan once said, and Anrig makes good use of them in this important and engaging book."-E. J. Dionne, syndicated columnist and author of Why Americans Hate Politics
"Greg Anrig's wide-ranging and perceptive book looks beyond the ideology of the right and offers a persuasive account of the many policy failures that have emerged out of the conservative movement. Anrig has put the Bush administration and the right to a test that they themselves have carefully avoided. He has held them accountable not for their ideas, but for their performance."-Alan Brinkley, Allan Nevins Professor of History, Columbia University
"In this well-researched and witty book, Anrig critiques 'right-wing ideas' by examining what the policies and programs that embodied them have wrought over the last three decades. While giving several conservative ideas their due, he finds their record to be mixed at best."-John J. DiIulio Jr., political science professor and first director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
"With fastidious research and unimpeachable facts, Greg Anrig establishes the sound proposition that competent governance is incompatible with disbelief in government. The odd combination of the religious right dictating personal morality, 'neoconservatism' preaching unilateral interventionism, and radical libertarian tax cuts have cast our Republic adrift from its moorings. Restoration of common sense to government is long overdue."-Gary Hart, Former United States Senator

The Bottom Billion Why the Poorest Countries are Failing and What Can Be Done About It【電子書籍】[ Paul Collier ]
|

In the universally acclaimed and award-winning The Bottom Billion, Paul Collier reveals that fifty failed states--home to the poorest one billion people on Earth--pose the central challenge of the developing world in the twenty-first century. The book shines much-needed light on this group of small nations, largely unnoticed by the industrialized West, that are dropping further and further behind the majority of the world's people, often falling into an absolute decline in living standards. A struggle rages within each of these nations between reformers and corrupt leaders--and the corrupt are winning. Collier analyzes the causes of failure, pointing to a set of traps that ensnare these countries, including civil war, a dependence on the extraction and export of natural resources, and bad governance. Standard solutions do not work, he writes; aid is often ineffective, and globalization can actually make matters worse, driving development to more stable nations. What the bottom billion need, Collier argues, is a bold new plan supported by the Group of Eight industrialized nations. If failed states are ever to be helped, the G8 will have to adopt preferential trade policies, new laws against corruption, new international charters, and even conduct carefully calibrated military interventions. Collier has spent a lifetime working to end global poverty. In The Bottom Billion, he offers real hope for solving one of the great humanitarian crises facing the world today. "Set to become a classic. Crammed with statistical nuggets and common sense, his book should be compulsory reading." --The Economist "If Sachs seems too saintly and Easterly too cynical, then Collier is the authentic old Africa hand: he knows the terrain and has a keen ear.... If you've ever found yourself on one side or the other of those arguments--and who hasn't?--then you simply must read this book." --Niall Ferguson, The New York Times Book Review "Rich in both analysis and recommendations.... Read this book. You will learn much you do not know. It will also change the way you look at the tragedy of persistent poverty in a world of plenty." --Financial Times

Wake Up America The US Experiment is Failing!【電子書籍】[ David L. R. Stein ]
|

Few people living in the US today have any real appreciation or understanding of the wholesale sociopolitical changes which have occurred in the US just since the Vietnam Warーto say nothing about the pre-Vietnam War era. Until recently, the changes have been insinuated into US society so gradually few realize that a significant majority of the changes are so antithetical to fundamental US constitutional principles and values that they threaten the very survival of the US as a constitutional democratic republic. Engineered as they were by a covert, insidious, and subversive Neo-Marxist campaign which has been steadily and stealthily growing in the US for more than one hundred years, many of the changes have been deliberately designed to foment social discord, dysfunction, and instability through ethnic identity politics and race-baiting designed to pave the way for a full-fledged social revolution in which the US constitutional democratic republic would be replaced by a Neo-Marxist autocracy. The US now faces the distinct possibility of sliding into another bloody civil war, or into anarchy and chaos followed by installment of a Neo-Marxist autocracy. To prevent both of those possibilities, significant changes must be made to the US Constitution, as well as to civil, corporate, and criminal laws. If nothing is done, millions of freedom-loving US citizens, their children, and grandchildren will wake up one day to discover that all of their cherished freedoms and liberties have been taken from them. It’s now quite possible another bloody civil war will be necessary to ensure thatーin the immortal words of Abraham Lincolnーa “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

In Myth of Money: Breaking Out of the Failing Financial System, renowned finance, crypto, and economics thought leader Tatiana Koffman delivers an insightful and informative take on the past, present, and future of money, and the rise of cryptocurrencies as a transformative force in the financial world.

Koffman has witnessed multiple financial collapses firsthandーbeginning with the fall of the USSR, when her family lost everything, followed by the subprime mortgage crisis that marked the start of her new career, and then the economic fallout of COVID-19. As Bitcoin gains its footing globally, she has observed its meteoric rise and catastrophic falls with a keen understanding that these are early steps of a system poised to redefine finance.

Navigating her way from traditional finance and into the realms of venture capital, crypto, and digital assets, as she writes about fintech, Koffman's journey takes us from Eastern Europe to Canada, to Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, to Lebanon, Dubai, Africa, Necker Island, and back to the States. Along the way, she shares hard-earned lessons about the myths surrounding money, even those emerging in the new digital era.

Throughout the book, her stories are paired with clear explanations and discussions of technical aspects of finance, in her trademark voice of clarity, incisively cutting to the core of complex topics in a relatable and easy-to-digest manner.

Koffman's unique perspective, drawn from her global experience and deep understanding of economic upheavals, makes Myth of Money an essential read for anyone interested in the future of finance and the potential of cryptocurrency to take the place of a system we can no longer rely on to create and safeguard wealth.

America's Failing Economy and the Rise of Ronald Reagan【電子書籍】[ Eric R. Crouse ]
|

This book examines one of the most important economic outcomes in American historyーthe breakdown of the Keynesian Revolution. Drawing on economic literature, the memoirs of economists and politicians, and the popular press, Eric Crouse examines how economic decline in the 1970s precipitated a political revolution. Keynesian thought flourished through the presidencies of Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford, until stagflation devastated American workers and Jimmy Carter’s economic policies faltered, setting the stage for the 1980 presidential campaign. Tracking years of shifting public opinion and colorful debate between free-market and Keynesian economists, this book illuminates a neglected era of American economic history and shows how Ronald Reagan harnessed a vision of small government and personal freedom that transformed the American political landscape.

The Democracy Index Why Our Election System Is Failing and How to Fix It【電子書籍】[ Heather K. Gerken ]
|

Despite howls for reform, the only thing separating us from another election disaster of the kind that hit Florida in 2000, and that almost struck again in Ohio in 2004, may simply be another close vote. In this lucid and lively book, Heather Gerken diagnoses what is wrong with our elections and proposes a radically new and simple solution: a Democracy Index that would rate the performance of state and local election systems. A rough equivalent to the U.S. News and World Report ranking of colleges and universities, the Index would focus on problems that matter to all voters: How long does it take to vote? How many ballots get discarded? How often do voting machines break down? And it should work for a simple reason: no one wants to be at the bottom of the list.

For a process that is supposed to be all about counting, U.S. elections yield few reliable numbers about anything--least of all how well the voting system is managed. The Democracy Index would change this with a blueprint for quantifying election performance and reform results, replacing anecdotes and rhetoric with hard data and verifiable outcomes. A fresh vision of reform, this book shows how to drive improvements by creating incentives for politicians, parties, and election officials to join the cause of change and to come up with creative solutions--all without Congress issuing a single regulation.

In clear and energetic terms, The Democracy Index explains how to realize the full potential of the Index while avoiding potential pitfalls. Election reform will never be the same again.

Protecting Our Kids? How Sex Offender Laws Are Failing Us【電子書籍】[ Emily Horowitz ]
|

This thought-provoking work raises important questions about sex offender laws, drawing from personal stories, research, and data to prove the policies promote fear, destroy lives, and fail to protect children.

Do sex offender laws protect children, or are they inherently unfair practices that, at their worst, promote vigilante justice? The latter, this book argues. By analyzing the social, political, historical, and cultural context surrounding the emergence of current sex offender policies and laws, the work shows how sex offenders have come to loom as greater-than-life monsters when, in many cases, that is not true at all. Looking at its subject from a fresh viewpoint, the book shares research and new analyses of data and qualitative evidence to show how sex-offender laws are not only ineffective, but engender destructive fear and anxiety.

To help readers understand the impact of these laws, the author presents interviews with sex offenders and their families as they describe the day-to-day reality of living on the sex offender registry. Citing research and statistics, the book challenges the idea that sex offenders must be continually monitored and publicly identified because they are incurably predatory. Most important, the study shows that undue sex offender panic is preventing policymakers from addressing the true threats to childrenーpoverty and growing inequality.

Der Sudan: Zwischen B?rgerkrieg, umfassendem Frieden und Sezession des S?dens Weak state, failing state, oder gescheitertes nation building? - Eine Fallstudie zum Ph?nomen Sudan【電子書籍】[ Jean A. Charar ]

With Charity for All Why Charities Are Failing and a Better Way to Give【電子書籍】[ Ken Stern ]

Vast and largely unexamined, the world of American charities accounts for fully 10 percent of economic activity in this country, yet operates with little accountability, no real barriers to entry, and a stunning lack of evidence of effectiveness. In With Charity for All, Ken Stern reveals a problem hidden in plain sight and prescribes a whole new way for Americans to make a difference.

Each year, two thirds of American households donate to charities, with charitable revenues exceeding one trillion dollars. Yet while the mutual fund industry employs more than 150,000 people to rate and evaluate for-profit companies, nothing remotely comparable exists to monitor the nonprofit world. Instead, each individual is on his or her own, writing checks for a cause and going on faith. Ken Stern, former head of NPR and a long-time nonprofit executive, set out to investigate the vast world of U.S. charities and discovered a sector hobbled by deep structural flaws. Unlike private corporations that respond to market signals and go out of business when they fail, nonprofit organizations have a very low barrier to entry (the IRS approves 99.5 percent of applications) and once established rarely die. From water charities aimed at improving life in Africa to drug education programs run by police officers in thousands of U.S. schools, and including American charitable icons such as the Red Cross, Stern tells devastating stories of organizations that raise and spend millions of dollars without ever cracking the problems they set out to solve.
But he also discovered some good news: a growing movement toward accountability and effectiveness in the nonprofit world. With Charity for All is compulsively readable, driven in its early pages by the plight of millions of Americans donating to good causes to no good end, and in its last chapters by an inspiring prescription for individual giving and widespread reform.

Failing at School Lessons for Redesigning Urban High Schools【電子書籍】[ Camille A. Farrington ]
|

Roughly half of all incoming ninth graders across urban districts will fail classes and drop out of school without a diploma. Failing at School starts with the premise that urban American high schools generate such widespread student failure not because of some fault of the students who attend them but because high schools were designed to stratify achievement and let only the top performers advance to higher levels of education. This design is particularly detrimental for low-income, racial/ethnic minority students. To get different results, Farrington proposes fundamental changes based on what we now know about how students learn, what motivates them to engage in learning, and what kinds of educational systems and structures would best support their learning.

“This is a groundbreaking and eye-opening study because it does what few studies of high school truly do: get inside the hearts and minds of teen-agers and show what their experience of school looks and feels like to them. The analysis of students who fail is revealing and powerful. There are poignant and revealing stories of just how a few student mistakes or teacher insensitivities lead to unfortunate and long-lasting results. More importantly, these case studies, their nuances, and their implications take us beyond the clich?s and simplistic theories about schools and reform. Most importantly, we read of tangible and intelligent solutions that can be instituted, based on the facts on the ground. I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in getting beyond the typical talking points of school reform.”

ーGrant Wiggins, Authentic Education

“Camille Farrington details how high schools trap students along developmental trajectories distorted by structural factorsーresources, values and practicesーbeyond their control. Grounded firmly in research, she describes a better way forward. This book is an important contribution to the re-visioning of American high schools.”

ーRonald F. Ferguson, faculty director, Achievement Gap Initiative, Harvard University

"Why is there such a pattern of failure in urban high schools? This is a vital issue for every city in America. Camille Farrington’s analysis of the roots of this problem and suggestions for structural changes to break this cycle is the best I have seen. This book combines research and practitioner wisdom with common sense and heart, and for those of us engaged in this work, presents concrete directions for positive change.”

ーRon Berger, chief academic officer, Expeditionary Learning

Book Features:

Offers concrete strategies for redesigning high schools based on four dimensions of student achievementーstructural, academic, developmental, and motivational.

Highlights the voices of students to illustrate fundamental problems with the way we currently “do school.”

Addresses the new Common Core State Standards and the potential of this major reform effort to move us toward equity and excellence.

Camille A. Failing America's Faithful How Today's Churches Are Mixing God with Politics and Losing Their Way【電子書籍】[ Kathleen Kennedy Townsend ]

|

Blending inspirational memoir with a religious and political rebuke of American Christianity, the oldest daughter of Senator Robert F. Kennedy delivers a rousing call to arms for spiritual renewal.

For too long, religion has been a political plaything of the right-wing in this country. American churches seem more concerned with what people do with their bodies than with their souls. Now, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend issues a spiritual call to arms to those who feel like her that today’s churchesーCatholic and Protestant alikeーare failing to promote the welfare of those who depend upon them. After recounting her personal story in one of the most prominent Catholic families in America, she shows how America’s neediest are now forgotten while their churches fight political battles against abortion rights and homosexual marriages. She provides hope through powerful examples of individuals effecting change, from obscure social workers to The Purpose-Driven? Life’s Rick Warren, and maintains that our individual actions can return our churches to their traditional role as shepherds to their flock.

Failing Our Future How Grades Harm Students, and What We Can Do about It【電子書籍】[ Joshua R. Eyler ]
|

An indictment of the grading system in American schools and collegesーand a blueprint for how we can change it.

One of the most urgent and long-standing issues in the US education system is its obsession with grades. In Failing Our Future, Joshua R. Eyler shines a spotlight on how grades inhibit learning, cause problems between parents and children, amplify inequities, and contribute to the youth mental health crisis.

Eyler, who runs the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Mississippi, illustrates how grades interfere with students' intrinsic motivation and perpetuate the idea that school is a place for competition rather than discovery. Grades force students to focus on rewards and distract them from exploring ideas or pursuing interests beyond what they'll be tested on. In fact, grades significantly impede the learning process. They are also significantly affecting children's physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation have spiked, and academic stress tied to grades is a leading cause of this escalation.

Eyler shares success stories of grading reform efforts that are already under way as an antidote to the harms caused by the practices currently used in educational institutions. Equal parts scathing and hopeful, Failing Our Future aims to improve the lives of students by encouraging them to define success on their own terms. Parents, educators, policymakers, and students will find in these pages a rallying cry for change and a blueprint for how to implement reforms in our homes and classrooms.

Failing Intelligence How Blair Led Us into War in Iraq【電子書籍】[ Brian Jones ]
|

This is the first book on Iraq by a British intelligence official involved in the process that led to Britain taking part in the 2003 invasion. As the former head of the UK Defence Intelligence Staff's nuclear, biological and chemical section, Brian Jones is ideally placed to pronounce upon the way in which Britain was taken to war and the way in which the intelligence reporting on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction (WMD) was manipulated to justify Saddam Hussein's removal from power. Jones calls on his own experience and knowledge, a variety of leaked documents, and the expert testimony given to a series of inquiries, including the current Chilcot inquiry, to examine how and why Tony Blair and George W. Bush, managed to deceive their legislatures and their electorates into believing that Iraqi WMD was a real threat that could attack the West within 45 minutes. He describes how Blair and Bush sought to use subsequent inquiries to cover up their own culpability in the deception, in order to facilitate re-election and keep their jobs. In conclusion, Jones pulls together the lessons that should have been learned in relation to both the use of intelligence to justify policy-making and with regard to broader international issues of security and governance.
