Franciscan Spirituality and Mission in New Spain, 1524-1599 Conflict Beneath the Sycamore Tree (Luke 19:1-10)【電子書籍】[ Steven E. Turley ]

Franciscans in sixteenth-century New Spain were deeply ambivalent about their mission work. Fray Juan de Zum??rraga, the first archbishop of Mexico, begged the king to find someone else to do his job so that he could go home. Fray Juan de Ribas, one of the original twelve 'apostles of Mexico' and a founding pillar of the church in New Spain, later fled with eleven other friars into the wilderness to escape the demands of building that church. Fray Jer??nimo de Mendieta, having returned from an important preaching tour in New Spain, wrote to his superior that he did not want to enlist again, and that the only way he would return to the mission field was if God dragged him by the hair. This discontent was widespread, grew stronger with time, and carried important consequences for the friars' interactions with indigenous peoples, their Catholic co-laborers, and colonial society at large. This book examines that discontent and seeks to explain why the exhilaration of joining such a 'glorious' enterprise so often gave way to grinding discontent. The core argument is that, despite St. Francis's own longing to do mission work, his followers in New Spain found that effective evangelization in a frontier context was fundamentally incompatible with their core spirituality. Bringing together two streams of historiography that have rarely overlapped - spirituality and missions - this book marks a strong contribution to the history of spirituality in both Latin America and Europe, as well as to the growing fields of transatlantic and world history.

The Exorcist of Sombor The Mentality of an Eighteenth-Century Franciscan Friar【電子書籍】[ D?niel B?rth ]

The Exorcist of Sombor examines the life course, practice and mentality of an eighteenth-century Franciscan friar, based on his own letters and documentation, creating a frame around the tightly packed history of events that took place between 1766-1769, and analysing the series of exorcism scandals that erupted in the Hungarian town of Sombor, from the perspectives of social history and cultural history.

The author employs a method which reflects historical anthropology, the history of ideas and the influence of Italian microhistory. Based on the activity of an exorcist priest in the early modern period, the documents of the ecclesiastical courts and a considerable body of autograph correspondence are thoroughly examined. Analysing these letters gives the reader a chance to come into close proximity with the way of thinking of a person from the eighteenth century. The research questions in connection to the documentation aim to identify the causes for the conflict. How was it possible to have "correct" and "wrong" methods of exorcism within the practice of one and the same church? What sort of criteria were used when certain previously accepted practices were dubbed superstitious in the second half of the eighteenth century? What were the changes that took place in the attitude of priests and friars within the ecclesiastical society of the period? How can a conflict be focussed on a practice (healing by exorcism) which has roots going back thousands of years? How many different variants of demonology existed in the clerical thinking of the age?

As a highly accomplished source analysis within microhistory, The Exorcist of Sombor will be of great interest to early modern historians, anthropologists and culture researchers interested in microhistory and themes such as religion, magic, occultism and witchcraft.

Trinitarian Perspectives in the Franciscan Theological Tradition【電子書籍】[ Maria Calisi ]

Trinitarian Perspectives in the Franciscan Theological Tradition by Dr. Maria Calisi builds substantially on the previous volumes in the Franciscan Heritage series sponsored by the Secretariat for the Retrieval of the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition (CFIT) of the English Speaking Conference of the Order of Friars Minor. Dr. Calisi is an authority on the theology of Saint Bonaventure. Her exposition of the foundations of the Seraphic Doctor’s theology in the contemplative experience of and reflection on the relational nature of God’s life retrieves an important theological perspective applicable to our contemporary search for meaning. Well schooled in the patristic inheritance, Calisis engages the reader with a simple but profound analysis of the creedal sign shared by all Christians: In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. In these pages we will discover how doctrine can shape life, and life, doctrine; how faith-filled human beings rooted in Trinitarian love can bear great fruit for both Church and society by engaging practitioners in action supportive of personal dignity, ecumenical relationships, social transformation, and ecclesial reform.

The Franciscan Invention of the New World【電子書籍】[ Julia McClure ]

This book examines the story of the ‘discovery of America’ through the prism of the history of the Franciscans, a socio-religious movement with a unique doctrine of voluntary poverty. The Franciscans rapidly developed global dimensions, but their often paradoxical relationships with poverty and power offer an alternate account of global history. Through this lens, Julia McClure offers a deeper history of colonialism, not only by extending its chronology, but also by exploring the powerful role of ambivalence in the emergence of colonial regimes. Other topics discussed include the legal history of property, the complexity and politics of global knowledge networks, the early (and neglected) history of the Near Atlantic, and the transatlantic inquisition, mysticism, apocalypticism, and religious imaginations of place.

Enduring Presence Diversity and Authenticity Among the First Generations of Franciscan Laity【電子書籍】[ Darleen Pryds ]

Written as a companion volume to Women of the Streets: Early Franciscan Women and their Mendicant Vocation (Franciscan Institute Publications, 2010), Enduring Presence offers more gritty stories of the faith journeys of lay men and lay women who helped create the Franciscan charism in the first generations of the Franciscan movement. Their unique contributions as “somatic theologians” or people who contributed to the Franciscan intellectual tradition by how they lived out the theology and spirituality are mapped out here in this volume and include work, marriage, hospitality, and service as spiritual practice. ABOUT THE FRANCISCAN HERITAGE SERIES This is the tenth in a series intended to encompass topics which will connect the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition with today's language of our Christian Catholic Franciscan way of Gospel Life. Previous volumes have presented an overview of the tradition, discussed dimensions of creation and Christian anthropology in Franciscan theology, and illustrated them through an iconographic tradition found in the Gospel of John. It is our hope that Understanding John Duns Scotus: 'Of Realty the Rarets-veined Unfraveller' ? just as the sermons, commentaries, and treatises of Bonaventure, Scotus, or Ockham ? will add to our understanding of the Franciscan intellectual tradition because these stories reveal how creation is a sacrament of God's loving presence and the first book of revelation.

The Third Spiritual Alphabet Franciscan Prayer of Recollection【電子書籍】[ Fray Francisco de Osuna ]

A Franciscan Spiritual Classic on the Prayer of Recollection and Contemplation.

From the Introduction:

We are told in the Gospel that the first law of life is to ‘love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy mind.’1 The end of contemplative prayer - or prayer of recollection - is nothing else than the fulfillment of this law.

The end of contemplative prayer is nothing else than the fulfillment of the law to love God with all our being. And ‘the art of contemplation’ is nothing else than the application of the demands of love to man’s relation with God. Hence as Fray Francisco de Osuna says: ‘This manner of prayer is called the art of love.’ But he clarifies this definition when he says: ‘Furthermore, it is called union, for when man after this way attains to God, he becomes one spirit with him by an exchange of will, so that man wills nought but what God wills, neither does God withdraw himself from the will of man, but in all things they are one.’ It is important to note that the love of God which is the end of contemplative prayer is the union of man’s will with the divine will by the action of love. In other words contemplative prayer does not aim at inducing a mere sentiment of love but love itself - the union of the two wills of man and of God in mutual love, love as the activity of the will in its union with the divine will; not mere passive sentiment. It is well to understand this, as it marks the distinction between the authentic prayer of contemplation and that pseudo contemplation indulged in by people of a certain temperament.

...

And it is in this active conformity of his will with the divine will in love, that the contemplative begins to know God and himself with a new, more intimate knowledge and understanding. Before he begins to experience this closer intimacy with God, he may be said rather to know about God and the divine mysteries of life; now he begins really to know God and his relation to God in some way as he knows himself. This knowledge, as the experts in contemplative prayer insist, can be gained only in prayer itself: ‘No man can teach it, but only God.’ All that the most expert master can teach us is the road and the self-discipline by which one can arrive at the prayer itself.

There have been a multitude of books written on ‘the art of contemplative prayer,’ not all very helpful to the beginner. Moreover, in many of these books the simple rules of guidance are so embedded in disquisitions on the personal experiences of the writer, as frequently to bewilder the mere novice. The merit of The Third Spiritual Alphabet by Fray Francisco de Osuna, here given in an English version, is that notwithstanding its lack of arrangement, it does address itself to the beginner and keeps in view the special need of the beginner. Fray Osuna starts out with the principle that contemplative prayer is for the many, not for the few; and he is at pains to encourage the normal good Catholic to practice it, warning him not to be put off by the class of writers and spiritual directors who so fence off the prayer of contemplation with warnings and danger signals, as to discourage all but the most hardy and adventurous spirits.

One recommendation this book has: it was the reading of The Third Spiritual Alphabet which led St. Teresa of Jesus, in her early timorous days, to go forward in the way of mental prayerーa precious encouragement to one who at that early period and for many years after, received nothing but discouragement from her spiritual advisers. There are many in like circumstances who have not been so fortunate as S. Teresa.

Fr. In The Franciscan Heart of Thomas Merton, author Daniel Horan shows how, both before and after he became a Trappist monk, Merton’s life was shaped by his love for St. Francis and for the Franciscan spiritual and intellectual tradition. Women, Art and Observant Franciscan Piety Caterina Vigri and the Poor Clares in Early Modern Ferrara【電子書籍】[ Kathleen Giles Arthur ]

Caterina Vigri (later Saint Catherine of Bologna) was a mystic, writer, teacher and nun-artist. Her first home, Corpus Domini, Ferrara, was a house of semi-religious women that became a Poor Clare convent and model of Franciscan Observant piety. Vigri's intensely spiritual decoration of her breviary, as well as convent altarpieces that formed a visual program of adoration for the Body of Christ, exemplify the Franciscan Observant visual culture. After Vigri's departure, it was transformed by d'Este women patrons, including Isabella da Aragona, Isabella d'Este and Lucrezia Borgia. While still preserving Observant ideals, it became a more elite noblewomen's retreat, Grounded in archival research and extant paintings, drawings, prints and art objects from Corpus Domini, this volume explores the art, visual culture, and social history of an early modern Franciscan women's community.

The Infinity of God and a Finite World A Franciscan Approach【電子書籍】[ Kenan B. Osborne Ofm ]

This volume, focuses on the issue of the infinity of God, particularly within the Roman Catholic tradition. The Old and New Testament do not mention God’s infinity. From 100 to 1200, only a few Christian theologians offered some insights into divine infinity. One of the earliest in-depth presentations on divine infinity was developed by Alexander of Hales and his co-editors of the Summa who began to unite the writings of Aristotle on infinity with the Christian understanding of the triune God. Subsequent theologians, namely, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, and John Duns Scotus, developed lengthy studies on divine infinity. The in-depth theological focus on God’s infinity came to a stop with the Protestant Reformation and the Council of Trent. From the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth-century, the theological focus of almost all Western Christian Churches focused on ecclesiology in which the various Christian scholars argued that only “their church” was the true church established by Jesus. In the post-Vatican II era, interreligious dialogues have developed in an enormous way. However, in these interreligious conferences there has not been a major and intense discussion of the infinity of God. Theologically, there can be only one infinite God, and such a position challenges the positions of the interreligious dialogues vis-a-vis the issue of one God. In my present volume, I explain in depth this up and down focus on infinity and in the final chapter I recommend in a strong way that the inter-religious dialogues once again focus on God’s infinity in a way commensurate with the approach of the medieval scholars. The medieval scholars were united in their religion. The contemporary interreligious scholars are disunited in many ways, but especially in the theology of an infinite God.

Franciscan Wisdom The Essential Teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi【電子書籍】[ Saint Francis of Assisi ]

What does the world need? Truth, beauty, goodness, and light. Fill your life with these and spread them wherever you go. Franciscan Wisdom is full of inspirational quotes by famous Franciscans exploring these themes. Most holy people live in plain sight. We cross paths with them every day. They will never be recognized officially as saints, and they prefer that. Most of them lived quiet, diligent lives, dedicated to serving other people. They became extraordinary people by repeatedly doing the ordinary things with great love. There's nothing more attractive than holiness. Francis of Assisi stands as a singular example of this piercing truth. This man and his life are universally intriguing and attractive. For eight hundred years, he has been loved and respected by men and women of all faiths, and those of no faith. His holiness crosses the bounds of religion and prejudice. Our lives become animated by faith when we discover once and for all that we too can walk that path. Holiness is possible. Not just for people in far-off places and times, but you and me, here and now. And not only is holiness possible but it is needed. Are you ready to be holy? It is an invitation to wholeness. It is a radical invitation to everything you yearn for that you don't know you need and want. An invitation to find your best, truest, highest, and most authentic self in Jesus.

Mother of Invention Mother Teresa and the Franciscan Servants of Jesus【電子書籍】[ Bridget Gillard ]

There is nothing conventional about the life and religious journey of Grace Costin. After a family tragedy caused her to reject God, she began on the long path back to faith through pioneering social work, a solo journey across the United States and a brief interlude as one of the first women police officers. Following a fleeting ministry as Sister Teresa in the Order of St Anne, she met the charismatic priest Bernard Walke, with whom she formed a loving but combative working partnership before experiencing a calling to create a religious Order unlike any that had existed before. Her quest took her from remote parishes in Cornwall to the slums of Paisley, an inner-city parish in 1930s London and the Isle of Wight until finally she found what she was searching for in the personal ads of the Daily Telegraphーa “Typical Thatched Devon farmhouse”.

And so in the middle of the Second World War, aged 54 with a heart condition and no money, she set out to transform the run-down house in a remote corner of Devon into the Community she had dreamed of for so long. With the help of a series of remarkable women she had attracted along the way, she created Posbury St Francisーa community, not a convent, with sisters, not nuns, and a Mother, but not a Mother Superior.

Mother of Invention is the story of how a woman, the daughter of a bigamous marriage, with no money, connections or academic background, founded her own religious Order which, at its height, was visited by over 2,000 people a year.

In "The Old Franciscan Missions Of California," George Wharton James transports readers to the spiritual and cultural landscape of 18th and 19th century California. This meticulously researched work is characterized by James's lyrical prose, which elegantly intertwines historical narratives with vivid descriptions. He delves into the architectural grandeur, ritual practices, and socio-political contexts of the Franciscan missions, establishing them as both religious sanctuaries and centers of community life. His narrative style reflects a nuanced understanding of the era's complexities, making this book a significant contribution to American historical literature and the study of colonialism in the West. George Wharton James (1858-1923) was a passionate advocate for the preservation of California's natural and cultural heritage. As a prominent writer and lecturer, his extensive travels throughout the American West deeply informed his perspective on the missions. His commitment to education and historical preservation stemmed from his encounters with the remnants of California's colonial past, which he sought to illuminate and celebrate through this fervent exploration. This book is highly recommended for historians, scholars, and enthusiasts of California's rich heritage. James's compelling narrative invites readers to appreciate the missions not only as historical sites but as vibrant witnesses to the cultural confluence that shaped the region. Engaging with this text will deepen one's understanding of California's identity and the enduring legacy of the Franciscan missions.

The Franciscan View of the Human Person Some Central Elements【電子書籍】[ Dawn M. Nothwehr ]

This brief volume discusses several of the central elements of human person as found in those works of the Franciscan theological tradition which, when taken together, most sufficiently describe these qualities. As the tradition developed over the years, the intuitions and insights of St., Francis and St. Claire of Assisi concerning the human person were developed and/or restated in language better understood by the people of a particular era. Two of the most famous early Franciscan theologians, Bonaventure and John Duns Scotus, did just that. This volume will, by drawing on the wisdom on the Franciscan tradition, contribute in a similar way to an understanding of the human person today.

Expecting Pears from an Elm Tree Franciscan Missions on the Chiriguano Frontier in the Heart of South America, 1830?1949【電子書籍】[ Erick D. Langer ]

Missions played a vital role in frontier development in Latin America throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They were key to the penetration of national societies into the regions and indigenous lands that the nascent republics claimed as their jurisdictions. In Expecting Pears from an Elm Tree, Erick D. Langer examines one of the most important Catholic mission systems in republican-era Latin America, the Franciscan missions among the Chiriguano Indians in southeastern Bolivia. Using that mission system as a model for understanding the relationship between indigenous peoples and missionaries in the post-independence period, Langer explains how the missions changed over their lifespan and how power shifted between indigenous leaders and the missionaries in an ongoing process of negotiation.

Expecting Pears from an Elm Tree is based on twenty years of research, including visits to the sites of nearly every mission discussed and interviews with descendants of mission Indians, Indian chiefs, Franciscan friars, mestizo settlers, and teachers. Langer chronicles how, beginning in the 1840s, the establishment of missions fundamentally changed the relationship between the Chiriguano villages and national society. He looks at the Franciscan missionaries’ motives, their visions of ideal missions, and the realities they faced. He also examines mission life from the Chiriguano point of view, considering their reasons for joining missions and their resistance to conversion, as well as the interrelated issues of Indian acculturation and the development of the mission economy, particularly in light of the relatively high rates of Indian mortality and outmigration. Expanding his focus, Langer delves into the complex interplay of Indians, missionaries, frontier society, and the national government until the last remaining missions were secularized in 1949. He concludes with a comparative analysis between colonial and republican-era missions throughout Latin America.
