Das Gem?lde ist in ?l auf Leinwand gemalt und tr?gt die Ma?e 236,2 cm * 179,1 cm. Gainsborough fertigte es im Jahr 1785 an, heute befindet es sich in der National Gallery, London. William Hallett (1764 - 1842) und Elizabeth Hallett, geb. Stephen (1763/4 - 1833) heirateten am 30. Juli 1785. Das Gem?lde ist vermutlich wenig sp?ter entstanden. Leider konnte ich keine Quellen ausfindig machen, in denen n?here Informationen zu den Auftraggebern standen. Es ist lediglich das genannte Hochzeitsdatum und der, in der folgenden Provenienz aufgef?hrte Preis von 126 Pfund ?berliefert, die Mr. Hallett an den K?nstler zahlte. Dieser Betrag war jedoch ein Standartpreis f?r Gainsboroughs Doppelportraits in Lebensgr??e und gibt somit auch keine spezielle Information ?ber das Gem?lde wieder. Da ich in der Literatur keine spezielle Interpretation des Bildes finden konnte, werde ich eine genaue Ikonographie hier au?er Acht lassen. Da die Deutung der Bildelemente in Bezug auf das Bildthema (Hochzeit) also weniger bedeutsam zu sein scheint, werde ich mich in der folgenden Arbeit, nach einer kurzen Biografie, auf eine genaue Bildbeschreibung und Analyse beschr?nken. Seine Auftr?ge kamen vor allem von der high society bis hin zum K?nigshaus, wie das Ganzfigurenbildnis der Queen Charlotte in Schwerin beweist. Wer davorsteht, wird gefangen von der Lebhaftigkeit der Malweise, die f?r seine Zeit modern, ja impressionistisch anmutet. Und diese malerische Auffassung bewog damals den konventionellen Akademiepr?sidenten Reynolds in seiner Rede kurz nach Gainsboroughs relativ fr?hem Tod, den besonderen Reiz zu loben, gleichzeitig aber auch seine Sch?ler vor Nachahmung zu warnen. Die zahlreichen Briefe, die erhalten blieben, ?berraschen durch Esprit und - aus heutiger Sicht - Modernit?t. Wer sich in Gainsboroughs Lebensgeschichte vertieft, lernt einen sensiblen K?nstler kennen, offen f?r seine vielen Freunde, aufgeschlossen f?r andere Kunstbereiche wie Musik und Schauspiel, aber auch mit einem Hang zu Leichtsinn und Beeinflussbarkeit.
