The island city has hosted the likes of Cabeza de Vaca, Jean Lafitte, Sam Houston, Jack Johnson, King Vidor, and Sam Maceo. A strategic target during the Civil War and military stronghold during both World Wars, Galveston endured through countless calamities, including the most damaging hurricane to hit the United States. Grizzly Galveston Ghost - The Bear Chronicles 3 Bear Chronicles, #3【電子書籍】[ GW Moore ]

A hurricane barrels into the Texas Gulf Coast, leaving Galveston battered and broken. Uncle Henry's Bed & Breakfast takes the brunt of it, and when the storm finally passes, he's goneーclaimed by the chaos. News of his uncle's death hits Ronnie hard, but before he can even catch his breath, he finds himself holding the keys to the battered old B & B.

Ronnie's friends won't let him face this alone. They drop everything, take time off work, and head to Galveston, ready to roll up their sleeves. At first, the work is almost therapeuticーscrubbing, repairing, replacing. But then they uncovers a hidden grave on the property, and everything changes. The house, once just creaky and old, starts to feel alive, and not in a good way. Moans drift from the attic. Paintings fall when no one's watching.

Curiosity turns into obsession as they dig into the story behind the grave. What they find is a mystery that stretches back a century. Lyndon and Tom investigate, while Steve uncovers a curious link to New York that nobody saw coming.

Determined to get answers, Paul tracks down a local medium. The group gathers for a s?ance, half skeptical, half terrified. What unfolds is nothing any of them could have prepared for.

As the investigation spirals, the questions pile up. Was Uncle Henry's death really just a tragic accidentーor did something more sinister have a hand in it? Why was someone buried on the property instead of in a cemetery? What secret is the Great Hurricane of 1901 still hiding? And is it possible for a serial killer to reach out from beyond the grave?

There's only one way to find out. With Kevin lending a hand, the group faces the biggest question of all: are ghosts real, or is the past just refusing to stay buried?

Island Indictments True crime tales from Galveston's history【電子書籍】[ Leigh Jones ]

A runaway airman slaughters a family of three as they sleep in their beds.

A single mother murders her two young sons and hides their dismembered bodies in her refrigerator.

An elderly man beats his granddaughter to death with a hammer because her childish singing annoys him.

Those are just three of the violent crimes that rocked Galveston in one year: 1955.

Galveston, Texas, has a storied history marked by captains of industry and mafia bosses. Their exploits are legendary. But those now-infamous stories weren’t the only ones to make headlines over the decades. The island city’s ordinary citizens left their mark as well, often on their friends and neighbors. Their stories are just as much a part of Galveston’s history as its deadly storms and favorite sons.

Island Indictments recounts the tales of 25 crimes that shocked the city and left juries wrestling with justice. Some killers paid for their crimes with their lives. Others walked free.

Take a trip across the causeway for a true crime journey through seven decades of Galveston’s past.

One thing’s for sure: The good old days weren’t always so good.

The Water Cries Uncovering the Slave Auction Houses of Galveston, Texas【電子書籍】[ Anthony Paul Griffin ]
|

The Water Cries represents an ambitious search for the location of the slave auction houses in one of America’s most storied cities. The author plumbs historical documentation, sifting historical advertisements and archiving familial connections.

The book is a history told by grandmothers and grandfathers. It addresses a history previously told under a different light or never told at all. These are the tales of an heir of the previously enslaved, tales of images seen and unseen, the voices of the mystical. The Water Cries represents a contribution to the telling of the long-ignored truths of Galveston’s central role in the untenable trade of human souls, slavery.

The book is divided into three sections: before Emancipation (1840?1865); after Emancipation (1865?1940); and concrete suggestions for Galveston moving forward. This latter section involves giving faces and names to the voices we hear, the creation of a historical district, and the borrowing of other communities’ progress.

The Water Cries is a contribution to the rest of us also, particularly as we continue to grapple with what W. E. B. Du Bois described as America’s unique problem, the color line.

Greetings from Galveston: A History from the 1870s to the 1950s Through Post Cards【電子書籍】[ E. Barry Gray ]
|

The history of Galveston is the history of Texas. Beyond that, it is the history of the European colonization of the New World. Galveston has seen cannibalistic Indians, Spanish conquistadors, explorers, filibusters, pirates and their treasure, ship wrecks, Civil War battles, yellow fever epidemics and survived all these to become the leading city in Texas in both population and commerce during the mid and late 19th Century. The heroes of the Alamo and San Jacinto have walked her streets. Jim Bowie, Sam Houston, General Santa Anna and President David G. Burnett are but a few of the men whose names fill our history books. She has seen a fleet of pirate ships anchored in her harbor as well as the Union Navy. Galveston had the first telegraph, first telephone, first electric lights, first medical and nursing schools in the state and the list goes on and on. At one time she had over forty millionaires living in kingly mansions of almost every style of architecture along Broadway and other avenues.

Galveston Beyond the Beach Insiders' guide and tips to island favorites【電子書籍】[ Darcie Malphrus-Schlegel ]
|

While Galveston has been a major, national tourist destination for more than a hundred years, some of the Island's most overlooked features are among its most interesting! Remember that Galveston was once one of the leading ports in the U.S. and largest city in Texas. It was home to a major Civil War battle (you can still see cannonball holes in some of the historic buildings) as well as wars between competing prohibition-era gangs, and a wide open PERIOD of gambling and vice that spanned into the mid-20th century, spurred by the investments of a local crime family. The Rat Pack called some of the more notorious fun spots along the sea their home away from home. With all that history, it always surprised us that Galveston has historically been viewed as "only" a beach destination. My mom and I love to travel, and we found over time that some of the best travel can be found close to home. We have lived in and around Galveston for more than 20 years, and have spent a lot of time poking into the various sunny, sandy, spooky, delicious and beautiful spots the island has to offer. After all, while the Galveston beaches are great for families, the real fun of Galveston can be found....beyond the beach! We have collected in this book what we think are some of the more interesting things you can do when you want to take a break from the beautiful views and warm seas, as well as additional resources you can use to identify great activities, terrific food, and fun places to stay. Our hope is that you, like us, will fall in love with ALL that Galveston has to offer, and that no storm, economy or other forces have been able to sink.

Indians! Pirates! Rebels! Blockade Runners! Smugglers! Murder! Beaches! Beauty Contests! Hurricanes!

These are all a part of the colorful history of an island city that once called itself “The Free State of Galveston.” Located at a natural harbor on the northeastern part of a thirty-mile-long sand barrier island, the city dates its beginning from the end of the Texas Revolution. Before then, the harbor had attracted Jean Lafitte, a pirate from Louisiana, and the revolutionary Texan government fleeing in front of the attack of Santa Anna’s Mexican Army.

After independence in 1836, Michel B. Menard, along with nine associates, bought the harbor property and founded the town. Galveston grew on the strength of the harborーthe best between New Orleans and Veracruzーand the city became a major entry point for immigrants to Texas. During the Civil War it was a haven for Confederate blockade runners and the site of one of the major battles of the war in Texas. Afterward it was a center for occupation forces and the point from which Major-General Gordon Granger announced emancipation for Texas slaves on June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth Day). The city later became a major cotton port for the Southwest and the location of the University of Texas Medical School.

In 1900 Galveston was struck by a hurricane and flood that killed approximately six thousand people: the greatest disaster in the history of the United States. Afterward, the citizens built a sea wall, raised the grade of the island, and constructed a causeway for future protection. The city led the way with a commission form of government, and in the first half of the twentieth century, became noted for its illegal drinking, gambling, and prostitution.

After the Texas Rangers cleaned it up, Galveston developed into a tourist town with its attractions of the beach, hotels, celebrations, and fishing. Historic preservation projects such as houses, buildings, museums, and the square-rigged ship Elissa completed its evolution.

This authoritative and well-written history of Galveston provides an overview of the city’s rich and colorful past and provides readers, researchers, and tourists with information about today’s historical points of interest. Galveston*: A History and a Guide* is a delightful read and a useful traveling companion.
