Wilding Ecologies, Walking-with Glacier An Educational Novella【電子書籍】[ Karen Malone ]

This book is an educational novella composed from diverse encounters of walking-with a glacier, offering the reader possibilities for wilding ecologies as a means to be immersed in more-than-human lives and places. Wild rivulets of ecologies run through this novella, shifting fragments of geologic time over a disintegrating, icy, and watery landscape. Walking-with is positioned in the novella as an embodied methodology for attuning to, slowing down and paying attention. While walking, we weep, and bear witness to the unseen. In turn, this novella works with flows of pedagogy, theory, and collective creative practice. Glacier stories speaking through photographs, prose, poetry, and provocations. Collectively, the gathering of experiences in this book explores what it means to be human and more-than-human in the context of glacial melt and shifting loss. What is means to be changing our planet and, all the time, changing ourselves. Wilding ecologies emerges in the book, as a means to disrupt these anthropocentric ways of knowing, and by showing up, being affected, we can reawaken a newfound love and enchantment.

The Great Melt Comparing National Responses to the Global Crisis of Glacier Retreat【電子書籍】[ Azhar ul Haque Sario ]

What happens when the world's frozen giants begin to disappear?

This book takes you on a global journey. We explore a critical climate crisis. It's about melting glaciers. We see how different nations are responding to this challenge. We travel to the high Himalayas in Nepal to understand climate vulnerability. We visit Switzerland, a global hub for cryosphere science. Then, we go to Peru, where communities are fighting for water security in the Andes. We learn about Bhutan's unique approach, filtering climate policy through Gross National Happiness. The book covers the subcontinental scale of India's challenges. China's massive engineering solutions in the Third Pole are examined. We explore complex issues in Chile, where mining, conservation, and water rights clash. Norway's climate paradox as an energy giant is revealed. We see how New Zealand is adapting in the Southern Alps. Canada's response spans from the Rockies to the Arctic. We witness the deep policy divides and Alaskan realities in the United States. We even look at European nations like Germany and Italy, linking their disappearing Alpine glaciers to EU policy. The book also includes countries defined not by mountains but by adaptation, like The Netherlands, and others like South Korea that are offering technological responses to this global challenge.

Many books tell you that glaciers are melting. They show you the alarming science. "The Great Melt" does something different. It moves beyond just describing the problem to focus on the human response. This book offers a unique comparative analysis you won't find anywhere else. By placing these diverse national case studies side-by-side, it connects the dots between policy, culture, economy, and technology. How does a nation's energy wealth, like Norway's, create a climate paradox? How can a cultural philosophy, like Bhutan's, shape environmental law? How do developing nations like Nepal and Peru adapt with fewer resources compared to giants like the US and China? This book doesn't just present isolated stories. It weaves them together, revealing a global tapestry of innovation, political struggle, and human adaptation. It provides a real-world look at what works, what doesn't, and what the future might hold, offering practical insights that a purely scientific text simply cannot provide.

Disclaimer: The author has no affiliation with any official boards or organizations mentioned and this work is independently produced under nominative fair use.

Following a disastrous family holiday, Libby and Curtis make a promise: If they ever visit the West Coast of the South Island again, it will be to stay at the majestic Grand Glacier Hotel. Twenty years later, Libby is recovering from cancer and the couple finally return to the resort. Except the glacier has retreated, nothing goes to plan, and after a storm separates her from Curtis, Libby finds herself alone in the isolated hotel. Disappointed, she tentatively begins to explore her surroundings. Could the inaccessible hotel and its curious collection of staff and guests hold the key to Libby reconnecting with the person she once was? At the Grand Glacier Hotel is award-winning novelist Laurence Fearnley’s third novel responding to the five senses. Drawing on a varied soundscape, this tangible, moving portrait of physical and emotional recovery offers a way forward, one hopeful step at a time. Praise for the author’s other books: ‘I am such a fan of Laurence’s writing . . . Through Glacier Park: Seeing America First with Howard Eaton【電子書籍】[ Mary Roberts Rinehart ]

This is about a three-hundred mile trip across the Rocky Mountains on horseback with Howard Eaton. It is about fishing, and cool nights around a camp-fire, and long days on the trail. It is about a party of all sorts, from everywhere, of men and women, old and young, experienced folk and novices, who had yielded to a desire to belong to the sportsmen of the road. And it is by way of being advice also. Your true convert must always preach. If you are normal and philosophical; if you love your country; if you like bacon, or will eat it anyhow; if you are willing to learn how little you count in the eternal scheme of things; if you are prepared, for the first day or two, to be able to locate every muscle in your body and a few extra ones that seem to have crept in and are crowding, go ride in the Rocky Mountains and save your soul. If you are of the sort that must have fresh cream in its coffee, and its steak rare, and puts its hair up in curlers at night, and likes to talk gossip in great empty places, don't go. Don't read this. Sit in a moving-picture theater and do your traveling.

To Avenge a Dead Glacier【電子書籍】[ Shane Tivenan ]

Winner of the RT? Francis MacManus Short Story Prize and the John McGahern Award, Shane Tivenan is a remarkable new talent. This debut collection simmers with style, verve, tension and humour. Throughout the stories in To Avenge a Dead Glacier, Tivenan explores the lives of rural Irish outsiders. His characters are artists, sean-n?s singers, members of the queer community, the gifted, the neurodivergent, the environmentally concerned, people with memory problems, the spiritual people, the non-human.

In the title story, a man attends the funeral of a glacier in Iceland without fully knowing why he is there. In another, a midlands graffiti artist warns his townspeople through his throw-ups about the dangers of the way they are living, but neglects his own mind in the process. In 'Honey Brown', a ninety-two-year-old woman who suffers from Charles Bonnet syndrome tries to celebrate her birthday in a nursing home in Roscommon while fighting back the hallucinations brought on by her condition. In 'Resurrection of a Corncrake', a semi-retired plasterer is haunted by the silencing of the birds in his townland, a silencing which he knows he took part in.

These are stories rich in the essential detail of human life, in the fraught exchanges that make up our every relationship, and very often of life lived beyond the confines of safety or simplicity.

The Changing Alpine Treeline The Example of Glacier National Park, MT, USA【

The alpine treeline ecotone (ATE) is an area of transition high on mountains where closed canopy forests from lower elevations give way to the open alpine tundra and rocky expanses above. Alpine tundra is an island biome and its ecotone with forest is subject to change, and like oceanic islands, alpine tundra is subject to invasion ? or the upward advance of treeline. The invasion of tundra by trees will have consequences for the tundra biome as invasion does for other island flora and fauna. To examine the invasibility of tundra we take a plant's-eye-view, wherein the local conditions become extremely important. Among these local conditions, we find geomorphology to be exceptionally important. We concentrate on aspects of microtopography (and microgeomorphology) and microclimate because these are the factors that matter: from the plant's-eye-view, but we pay attention to multiple scales. At coarse scales, snow avalanches and debris flows are widespread and create "disturbance treelines whose elevation is well below those controlled by climate. At medium scales, turf-banked terraces create tread-and-riser topography that is a difficult landscape for a tree seedling to survive upon because of exposure to wind, dryness, and impenetrable surfaces. At fine scales, turf exfoliation of the fronts of turf-banked risers, and boulders, offer microsites where tree seedlings may find shelter and are able to gain a foothold in the alpine tundra; conversely, however, surfaces of needle-ice pans and frost heaving associated with miniature patterned ground production are associated with sites inimical to seedling establishment or survival. We explicitly consider how local scale processes propagate across scales into landscape patterns. The objective of this book is to examine the controls on change at alpine treeline. All the papers are focused on work done in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Although any one place is limiting, we are able to examine the alpine treeline here in some detail ? and an advantage is that the treeline ecotone in Glacier National Park is quite variable in itself due to the underlying variability in geomorphology at multiple scales. This book will provide insights into an important ecological phenomenon with a distinctly geomorphic perspective. The editors collectively have over 100 years of experience in working in geomorphology, biogeography, and ecology. They also have each worked on research in Glacier National Park for several decades. The book will be a reference for a variety of professionals and students, both graduate and undergraduate, with interests in Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Ecology, and Environmental Science. Because of the importance of the alpine treeline ecotone for recreation and aesthetic interests in mountain environments, wildland and park managers will also use this book.* Subject matter: geomorphology at alpine treeline* Expertise of contributors: each editor brings over 25 years of experience in studies of ecotones and geomorphology, and collectively over 100 years of experience in Glacier National Park* Changing alpine treeline examines climate change

Crawl out from a plane crash with a broken leg, head to Greenland in a cast the next week. Bag an iconic Alaska peak for a first winter ascent over the weekend, stroll into work on Monday.

He flew his single-engine plane like most of us drive cars. The mileage of his glacier flights equalled a few trips around the world.

But May was a bit much, even for one of the world's most capable experts in the emerging field of climate studies. Finals, proposals, shuttling people and gear back and forth to Black Rapids Glacier, writing the Most Important Paper, the one that showed the rapid melt of Alaska's glaciers, which contained enough water to raise the world's seas 20 feet.

His right hand. It wasn't helping. Dropping that wrench on the glacier? The numbness that made him clench, unclench. Flying had always been meditation. He flew by thinking of flying. Now, those times he needed to look down. Is my hand on the stick?

One day amid the madness, he flew his Piper over blue-white icefields. Clear and calm, his best day of flying ever. Crossing all of Alaska, he landed in Yakutat, a fishing village surrounded by glaciers. He was hosting a conference there. That evening at a lodge, Echelmeyer's mighty body convulsed with spasms.

At the top of his professional and personal arc, Echelmeyer learned of his brain tumor. No longer would he fly over glaciers, comparing their heights year after year to unravel one of the first compelling stories of change. He was, suddenly, no longer the physics genius, the fearless mountaineer, the man with maps in his head.

Doctors gave Echelmeyer six months to live. He needed to finish his Science paper, and so much more.In that precious time he had left, Echelmeyer pulled on his climbing helmet and leaned on ski poles to check the mail. With help from friends, he hiked on two-week backpacking trips in the Brooks Range, until his legs no longer worked.

Echelmeyer got his paper published. Reporters all over the world picked up the story of Alaska's glaciers adding as much to the sea as Antarctica's and twice as much as Greenland's. It was something he knew by intuition and proved with his small red airplane.

Echelmeyer lived and died well. And he handled the transition as well as anyone ever will. I worked with him through my job as a science writer at the University of Alaska. He intimidated me with his skills, knowledge and bravado before he was sick. He hugged me every time he saw me after he became sick. He and his wife drew a road map for how to handle a day that changes everything and what comes after.

Arising from an enormous feeling for and an acute perception of nature, the poems in this collection are distinguished by unexpected imagery, unique arrangements of language, and the facility with which the natural and human worlds are described and transformed by daring new perceptions. Hopes's poems are imbued with the intensely felt religious experience that colors his writing, about both nature and other parts of his life. He sees his poetry, in part, as an attempt to "reverse Milton's activity and justify the ways of men to God." 3,065円

Cold Sun The Search for World War II Airmen Lost in a Tibetan Glacier【電子書籍】[ William H. Jordan ]

In January 1944, a US Army Air Corps transport, en route to its home base in India, crashed into a snowfield in Tibet, killing all crew members. Because of the remote location and fierce winter weather, the aircraft was covered by heavy snowfall. The snowfield glaciated, completely hiding the aircraft until its accidental discovery by a Tibetan hunter in 1993. A nearby Chinese army garrison launched an immediate reconnaissance into the crash site and brought out remnants of the airplane and remains of the crew. They then notified the American Embassy in Beijing.

Then-Colonel William H. Jordan, commander of the US Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii, was assigned to investigate the crash site and to recover, identify, and repatriate the remains of the fallen US servicemen. Cold Sun: The Search for World War II Airmen Lost in a Tibetan Glacier is Jordan’s recounting of the events surrounding the recovery, including the final, solemn duty of officially informing the lost crewmen’s family membersーby this time in middle age or olderーof the fate of their loved ones. He weaves the mission of the aircraft and crew’s fate through the prism of America’s history of identifying and recovering their fallen warriors, the efforts over the years, and technological leaps needed to finally accomplish this grim, necessary mission.

Inspiring and informative, based in the personal reflections of Jordan and the others involved*, Cold Sun* tells the gripping story of a tragic loss, a harrowing recovery effort, and the human efforts involved.

Under the Glacier【電子書籍】[ Halldor Laxness ]

Nobel laureate Halld?r Laxness’s Under the Glacier is aone-of-a-kind masterpiece, a wryly provocative novel at once earthy and otherworldly. At its outset, the Bishop of Iceland dispatches a young emissary to investigate certain charges against the pastor at Sn?fells Glacier, who, among other things, appears to have given up burying the dead.

But once he arrives, the emissary finds that this dereliction counts only as a mild eccentricity in a community that regards itself as the center of the world and where Creation itself is a work in progress.

What is the emissary to make, for example, of the boarded-up church? What about the mysterious building that has sprung up alongside it? Or the fact that Pastor Primus spends most of his time shoeing horses? Or that his wife, Ua (pronounced “ooh-a,” which is what men invariably sputter upon seeing her), is rumored never to have bathed, eaten, or slept?

Piling improbability on top of improbability, Under the Glacier overflows with comedy both wild and deadpan as it conjures a phantasmagoria as beguiling as it is profound.
