Female Suffrage (a historical conservative point of view)【電子書籍】[ Goldwin Smith ]

This carefully crafted ebook: "Female Suffrage (a historical conservative point of view)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Please be aware that this is a text first published in 1875 which positions itself against Female Suffrage in the UK. It is essential to consider the book within the historical context in which it was written. In his book Goldwin Smith fires a virulent shot into Mr. Forsyth's Bill, and indeed into any Bill for establishing Female Suffrage. Goldwin Smith was originally an advocate for the Revolution and he has seen the Women's movement in America, where it has been far more successful than in the UK, and yet he disapproves the proposal with vehemence… The argument that weighs most for Goldwin Smith is the incalculable danger of disturbing the tacit concordat on which the relations between the sexes repose. By virtue of that concordat women get more privileges and fewer burdens, while men take more rights and burdens for themselves. Goldwin Smith (August 13, 1823 ? June 7, 1910) was a British historian and journalist, active in the United Kingdom and Canada.

The Religious Situation【電子書籍】[ Goldwin Smith ]

When Count Tolstoi was excommunicated by the Holy Synod of Russia because "he preached the teachings which are contrary to the Christian faith," the world was divided in opinion and sympathy into two parts. The partisans of Tolstoi were in the majority in the Western world; those of the Holy Synod in Russia and the Orthodox East. Yet Holy Russia rejected Tolstoi with much more compassion than Western Europe approved of him. It was a human tragedy which is not often repeated in history and was understood only by Russia. The conflict was more stern than appeared on the surface. The problems in question meant not less than the dilemma: either the Christian world was to continue or it must return to the starting point of human history and begin all anew. A little blade of grass in the field said to its green neighbours: "Why do we grow up? It is nonsense and pain. In growing up we grow in complications, which enhance the darkness and pain of our lives. I propose, therefore, to go back into seeds, from which we have grown big and unhappy." So spoke one blade of grass to the field. And the field replied: "Although perhaps we are growing in nonsense and pain, still we cannot return, we must grow and go our way in the belief that we are not mistaken." That is the simile of Tolstoi and the Holy Synod

Irish History and the Irish Question (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Goldwin Smith ]

“The people of Ireland when history opens were Celts, kinsmen of the primitive races of Gaul and Britain, remnants of which are left in Wales and in the Highlands of Scotland. Their language was of that family, while cognate words connect it with the general Aryan stock. There are traces of a succession of immigrations. Too much, no doubt, has been made of the influence of race. Yet the Teuton is a Teuton and the Celt is a Celt. The Celt in his native state has everywhere shown himself lively, social, communicative, impulsive, prone to laughter and to tears, wanting, compared with the Teuton, in depth of character, in steadiness and perseverance. He is inclined rather to personal rule or leadership than to a constitutional polity. His poet is not Shakespeare or Milton, but Tom Moore, a light minstrel of laughter and tears.”

The Federalist Papers (with Introductions by Edward Gaylord Bourne and Goldwin Smith)【電子書籍】[ Alexander Hamilton ]

Following the signing of the Declaration of Independence there was a vigorous debate in the American colonies on the form of government that should be then established. A Constitutional Convention was convened between May 25th and September 17th, 1787. A principal point in the debate at the convention was as to how much power should be granted to the federal government versus the states. In response to what would come out of this convention a number of “anti-federalist” essays began to proliferate in the press. In order to combat the objections to the new Constitution, Alexander Hamilton organized an effort to write and publish a series of essays that would “endeavor to give a satisfactory answer to all the objections”. This series of essays, which first appeared in three New York newspapers, “The Independent Journal”, the “New-York Packet”, and the “Daily Advertiser”, would come to be known as “The Federalist Papers”. Although the essays were published anonymously, it is believed that Alexander Hamilton wrote the majority of them with James Madison and John Jay contributing the rest. The influence of “The Federalist Papers” on modern democracy cannot be overstated and to this day these writings stand as some of the most important documents regarding the constitutional history of the United States of America. This edition includes introductions by Edward Gaylord Bourne and Goldwin Smith and a biographical afterword of Alexander Hamilton.

My heroines' victories ultimately led me to my own. Growing up in a family of very modest means, I joined the military to not only serve my country, but to gain access to the education I knew was, undoubtably, my only way of influencing young minds, like mine had been influenced all those years ago. With a master's degree in education and thirty years as a Language Arts/English teacher, I continued to bury my head in books that would help children reach the greatest potential possible in their young academic lives. Irish History and the Irish Question (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Goldwin Smith ]

Of all histories the history of Ireland is the saddest. For nearly seven centuries it was a course of strife between races, bloodshed, massacre, misgovernment, civil war, oppression, and misery. Hardly even now have the troubles of Ireland come to a close, either for herself or for her partner. Unrest still reigns in her and, embodied in her Parliamentary delegation, harasses the Parliament and distracts the councils of Great Britain.

The theatre of this tragedy is a large island lying beside one nearly three times larger, which cuts it off from the continent of Europe, while on the other side it fronts the wide ocean. The climate is for the most part too wet for wheat. The pasture is very rich. Ireland seems by nature to be a grazing country, and a country of large farms; tillage and small farms have been enforced by the redundance of rural population consequent on the destruction of urban industries. In coal and minerals Ireland is poor, while the sister island abounds in them, and in its swarming factories and mines furnishes a first-rate market for the produce of Irish pastures; so that the two islands are commercial supplements of each other.
This richly illustrated book introduces readers to “the golden one,” as Rebula has been lovingly described. Rebula grapes, an ancient varietal once prized by princes and popes, are indigenous to the region that now straddles the border between Italy and Slovenia. On the Italian side the area is called Collio, in Slovenia Gori?ka Brda. It has been rated by experts as among the top five wine terroirs on the planet, shoulder to shoulder with Bordeaux and Tuscany. Wine experts agree, calling Rebula “a dream wine of a new age.” Rebula was rated the World’s Best Wine in 2010 by sommelier Luca Gardini, and a Rebula has received an astounding 100 points on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale.

Beautifully designed with full-color photographs, the book recounts the fascinating story of Rebula and the history of wine in what was once Yugoslavia and is now Slovenia. The protagonist is a remarkable vintner, Zvonimir Sim?i?, one of the founders of what was Yugoslavia's most important winery before the country fragmented. Almost single-handedly responsible for the preservation of Rebula, he resurrected the forgotten varietal and transformed his home region, spectacular Gori?ka Brda, from a poverty-stricken area into one of the globe’s great wine destinations.

Pulitzer finalist Noah Charney provides a personal, humorous, deeply engaged travelogue through the little-known world of Slovenian wine that will delight adventurous travelers and wine lovers everywhere.
