In Honor? de Balzac's novella 'La Grenadiere,' the reader is transported to a picturesque countryside where the themes of love, loss, and nostalgia intertwine to create a poignant portrayal of human emotions. Balzac's vivid descriptions and nuanced character development highlight the psychological depth of the story, making it a classic example of 19th-century French realism. The narrative unfolds with a sense of melancholy and longing, capturing the essence of a bygone era with subtle yet profound details. The lyrical prose and rich imagery in 'La Grenadiere' evoke a sense of timelessness that resonates with readers long after the final page is turned. Balzac's ability to delve into the complexities of human relationships and emotions is masterfully showcased in this literary gem. Honor? de Balzac, a prominent figure in French literature, draws inspiration from his own observations of society and human nature to create works that are both insightful and enduring.

ー Ha !

ー Ah !

ー Tra?tre ! rugirent d’autres soldats.

ー Bravo !

ー Ah !

ー Horreur ! cria la salle scandalis?e.

ー Tu mens, grenadier ! cria l’italien avec col?re.

'Fifteen Rounds a Minute' The Grenadiers at War, August to December 1914, Edited from Diaries and Letters of Major 'Ma' Jeffreys and Others【電子書籍】[ Michael Craster ]

This book, originally published in 1976, is an account of the first five months of the First World War, as seen by members of a battalion of the Grenadier Guards and told in their own words and a classic of military writing. Contrary to the popular view of that war, this was a period of movement as the Allies sought first to block the German's apparently irresistible march on Paris, then to push them back to the Belgian border until finally both sides engaged in the 'Race for the Sea' in an attempt to find and exploit the open flank. It was a phase that included the retreat from Mons, the Battles of the Marne and the Aisne and finally and most devastatingly the First Battle of Ypres. The book is based on the diary that was kept by the Battalion Second in Command, Major George (subsequently General the Lord) Jeffreys, known to everyone as 'Ma'. Described by Harold Macmillan as one of the greatest of commanding officers, he was one of only three officers who went to war with the Battalion in August 1914 who survived with it to the end of the year. Supplemented on occasion by the letters and diaries of his brother officers and others, it provides a very complete picture of those turbulent days.

Le capitaine fant?me Les grenadiers ?cossais - La fille de Cabanil ( Edition int?grale ) Tome I et II - annot?【電子書籍】[ Paul F?val ]

The Fate of the Jacobite Grenadiers The Third of Three Books Telling the Story of Captain Patrick Lindesay and the Jacobite Grenadiers【電子書籍】[ Gavin Wood ]

February 1746. The rebel army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart has retreated to the north-east of Scotland. Here they are surrounded by three enemy armies loyal to King George. Lacking money, equipment and food, only a decisive victory on the battlefield can turn the tide of the war. Lord Kilmarnock's Horse Grenadiers have earned a reputation for loyalty, sculduggery and fortitude. Now Prince Charles rewards the regiment by promoting them to become his elite guards. It is a dangerous honour. As the war reaches its climax the Grenadiers must fight their deadliest battle yet. If the regiment does not stand fast, the Jacobite army will be destroyed and the rebellion will be over. You behave as a filching freebooter, Captain Lindesay one caught in the very act of brigancy. 'Brigancy!' Your Highness, the Irish nobleman turned to address the Prince. We cannot have our officers behave in such a fashion and in your royal regiment of guards to boot! Such unworthy behaviour will be the ruin of our reputation. And I must counsel that you dismiss Mr Lindesay from his post. Before the Prince could answer, Patrick stepped closer to the Quartermaster-General, toe-to-toe and eye-to-eye. His face was feral. Patrick curled his lip, bared his teeth, fingered his pistol. The conceited inanity of the fellow was insufferable. For a moment the Irishman was sure the Captain of the Grenadiers was about to offer a challenge and propose a duel. Then, to the astonishment of all the bystanders, Patrick smiled. Just the smallest upturn of the lips, but a veritable and carefree smile none-the-less. And OSullivan frowned, unsure why the Grenadiers anger had turned cold. And Patricks smile broadened, for the canniest of ploys had just come to him

Tales of the Jacobite Grenadiers【電子書籍】[ Gavin Wood ]

November 1745. After victory at the Battle of Gladsmuir, Charles Edward Stuart rules Scotland as prince regent. Across the border, in England, the regiments of King George are massing, intent on dislodging the prince from his throne in Edinburgh. The newly formed army of Scottish Jacobites take the initiative in the war. They invade England. To disguise their lack of numbers and ensure surprise, the princes army marches through the border hills in three fast-moving columns. Lord Kilmarnocks regiment of horse grenadiers are ordered to carry out the cavalry duties that the gentlemen regiments will not undertake. They find themselves escorting the baggage and artillery train through hostile country. If they cannot rendezvous with the Jacobite army as planned, the prince will have no capacity to fight the coming campaign. Lord Kilmarnock has only a hundred and fifty horsemen for the task at hand. It is not enough. What ignoble wickedness is this? Patrick pointed the muzzle of his piece towards the sack of caltrops by the ford. It is the wickedness of war. It is the madness of folly! Patrick thrust his smoking carbine into its holster. He drew out his rapier and held the blade low. A soldier should fight with honor. Fight with honor! Is that why your gallant prince declines battle and flees into the mountains? Veres Ulster accent was heavy with contempt. The two men faced each other, a pistol shot apart. The grey gelding flared its nostrils and stamped its foot on the road. Patrick placed his hand on the animals neck to calm its keenness. Aye, we are retreating, true enough. But before we depart, I will see that the crows gorge themselves on your flesh! Test your mettle if you have the courage. The Irishman brandished his musket in the air causing sunlight to glint off the steel of the bayonet. But before you face my fury, prepare yourself first to face the wrath of God.

WAFFEN GRENADIERS: The Waffen SS, the fighting arm of the notorious SS was employed in every bitter battle on the Eastern and Western fronts in World War 2. They were used as “Fire Brigades” to bolster and hold the line when it appeared that all else was lost, and many times they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Because they were some of the finest battle hardened soldiers at the time, they were able to accomplish these feats: but their soldierly merits will be forever tainted by the battlefield atrocities that they committed for the advancement of the criminal state for which they fought.

Honor? de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. His magnum opus was a sequence of short stories and novels collectively entitled, La Com?die humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the 1815 fall of Napoleon. Due to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature. He is renowned for his multifaceted characters, who are complex, morally ambiguous and fully human. His writing influenced many subsequent novelists such as Marcel Proust, ?mile Zola, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Gustave Flaubert, Benito P?rez Gald?s, Marie Corelli, Henry James, William Faulkner, Jack Kerouac, and Italo Calvino, and philosophers such as Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. Many of Balzac's works have been made into or have inspired films, and they are a continuing source of inspiration for writers, filmmakers and critics.-wikipedia

At this point the river, broad as a lake, and covered with scattered green islands, flows between two lines of cliff, where country houses built uniformly of white stone stand among their gardens and vineyards. The finest fruit in the world ripens there with a southern exposure. The patient toil of many generations has cut terraces in the cliff, so that the face of the rock reflects the rays of the sun, and the produce of hot climates may be grown out of doors in an artificially high temperature. A church spire, rising out of one of the shallower dips in the line of cliffs, marks the little village of SaintーCyr, to which the scattered houses all belong. And yet a little Further the Choisille flows into the Loire, through a fertile valley cut in the long low downs.
