Egyptian Hieroglyphs in the Late Antique Imagination【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Taylor Westerfeld ]

Throughout the pharaonic period, hieroglyphs served both practical and aesthetic purposes. Carved on stelae, statues, and temple walls, hieroglyphic inscriptions were one of the most prominent and distinctive features of ancient Egyptian visual culture. For both the literate minority of Egyptians and the vast illiterate majority of the population, hieroglyphs possessed a potent symbolic value that went beyond their capacity to render language visible. For nearly three thousand years, the hieroglyphic script remained closely bound to indigenous notions of religious and cultural identity.

By the late antique period, literacy in hieroglyphs had been almost entirely lost. However, the monumental temples and tombs that marked the Egyptian landscape, together with the hieroglyphic inscriptions that adorned them, still stood as inescapable reminders that Christianity was a relatively new arrival to the ancient land of the pharaohs. In Egyptian Hieroglyphs in the Late Antique Imagination, Jennifer Westerfeld argues that depictions of hieroglyphic inscriptions in late antique Christian texts reflect the authors' attitudes toward Egypt's pharaonic past. Whether hieroglyphs were condemned as idolatrous images or valued as a source of mystical knowledge, control over the representation and interpretation of hieroglyphic texts constituted an important source of Christian authority.

Westerfeld examines the ways in which hieroglyphs are deployed in the works of Eusebius and Augustine, to debate biblical chronology; in Greek, Roman, and patristic sources, to claim that hieroglyphs encoded the mysteries of the Egyptian priesthood; and in a polemical sermon by the fifth-century monastic leader Shenoute of Atripe, to argue that hieroglyphs should be destroyed lest they promote a return to idolatry. She argues that, in the absence of any genuine understanding of hieroglyphic writing, late antique Christian authors were able to take this powerful symbol of Egyptian identity and manipulate it to serve their particular theological and ideological ends.

This book is intended to serve as an elementary edition for all studies of Egyptian Literature. Its object is to present a short series of specimens of Egyptian compositions, which represent all the great periods of literary activity in Egypt under the Pharaohs, to all who are interested in the study of the mental development of ancient nations. It is not addressed to the Egyptological specialist, to whom, as a matter of course, its contents are well known, and therefore its pages are not loaded with elaborate notes and copious references. In selecting the texts for translation in this book an attempt has been made to include compositions that are not only the best of their kind, but that also illustrate the most important branches of Egyptian Literature. Among these religious, mythological, and moral works bulk largely, and in many respects these represent the peculiar bias of the mind of the ancient Egyptian better than compositions of a purely historical character. The Buried An Archaeology of the Egyptian Revolution【電子書籍】[ Peter Hessler ]

**A National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist

"Extraordinary...Sensitive and perceptive, Mr. Hessler is a superb literary archaeologist, one who handles what he sees with a bit of wonder that he gets to watch the history of this grand city unfold, one day at a time.” ーWall Street Journal

From the acclaimed author of River Town and Oracle Bones, an intimate excavation of life in one of the world's oldest civilizations at a time of convulsive change**

Drawn by a fascination with Egypt's rich history and culture, Peter Hessler moved with his wife and twin daughters to Cairo in 2011. He wanted to learn Arabic, explore Cairo's neighborhoods, and visit the legendary archaeological digs of Upper Egypt. After his years of covering China for The New Yorker, friends warned him Egypt would be a much quieter place. But not long before he arrived, the Egyptian Arab Spring had begun, and now the country was in chaos.

In the midst of the revolution, Hessler often traveled to digs at Amarna and Abydos, where locals live beside the tombs of kings and courtiers, a landscape that they call simply al-Madfuna: "the Buried." He and his wife set out to master Arabic, striking up a friendship with their instructor, a cynical political sophisticate. They also befriended Peter's translator, a gay man struggling to find happiness in Egypt's homophobic culture. A different kind of friendship was formed with the neighborhood garbage collector, an illiterate but highly perceptive man named Sayyid, whose access to the trash of Cairo would be its own kind of archaeological excavation. Hessler also met a family of Chinese small-business owners in the lingerie trade; their view of the country proved a bracing counterpoint to the West's conventional wisdom.

Through the lives of these and other ordinary people in a time of tragedy and heartache, and through connections between contemporary Egypt and its ancient past, Hessler creates an astonishing portrait of a country and its people. What emerges is a book of uncompromising intelligence and humanity--the story of a land in which a weak state has collapsed but its underlying society remains in many ways painfully the same. A worthy successor to works like Rebecca West's Black Lamb and Grey Falcon and Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines, The Buried bids fair to be recognized as one of the great books of our time.

The Egyptian Gothic consists of novels and short stories about ancient Egyptian mummies returning to life to seek retribution or romance as well as cursed object tales. Now mostly forgotten, from the 1880s through to the 1920s it was more popular than the vampire genre.

This book is the first to examine the genre by using the frequent sensory descriptions within these texts to interrogate attitudes towards Empire. Its aims are twofold. Firstly, it demonstrates that despite their status as disposable popular fiction these texts are rich in sensory discourses that have thus far been unexamined. Secondly, reading these discourses of touch, sight, smell, sound and taste reveals new and intriguing ways in which Egypt is allowed to strike back against the British Empire. The book argues that the Egyptian Gothic does not support the domination of Empire, but instead presents a power dynamic in flux with the mummy fighting back against Western occupation. Egypt and its artefacts evoke simultaneous feelings of fear and desire, where those who meddle by invading tombs or stealing mummies are destroyed by Egyptian revenants.

Chang brings us into living rooms and onto assembly lines with female characters as captivating as they are complex. . . . [She] blazingly captures all that chaos and personality."--The New York Times Book Review (Editors' Choice) What happens to the women who choose to work in a country struggling to reconcile a traditional culture with the demands of globalization? In this sharply drawn portrait of Egyptian society--deepened by two years of immersive reporting--Leslie T. Chang follows three women as they persevere in a country that throws up obstacles to their progress at every step, from dramatic swings in economic policy to conservative marriage expectations and a failing education system. Working in Egypt's centuries-old textile industry, Riham is a shrewd businesswoman who nevertheless struggles to attract workers to her garment factory and to compete in the global marketplace. Rania, who works on a factory assembly line, attempts to climb to a management rank but is held back by conflicts with co-workers and the humiliation of an unhappy marriage. Her colleague Doaa, meanwhile, pursues an education and independence but sacrifices access to her own children in order to get a divorce. Alongside these stories, Chang shares her own experiences living and working in Egypt for five years, seeing through her own eyes the risks and prejudices that working women continue to face. She also weaves in the history of Egypt's vaunted textile industry, its colonization and independence, a century of political upheaval, and the history of Islam in Egypt, all of which shaped the country as it is today and the choices available to Riham, Rania, and Doaa. Following each woman's story from home and work, Chang powerfully observes the near-impossible balancing act that Egyptian women strike every day. 5,206円

In this text, St. Macarius presents a different way of seeing the worldーa different way of being. He proposes a way of life that is antithetical to modern life, which means he is offering a road map away from the world, and a path towards Godーthe way of healing and nourishing the soul. This book is extremely deep and complex, and requires a slow and thoughtful approach. St. Macarius does not write to keep you on the edge of your seat, nor is he trying to entertain with stories or fanfare. The saint writes in a slow, meditative and poetic style, that weaves intricate theological concepts with Scripture, revealing mystical realities about God and the other world. This edition was translated from the Greek by Granville Penn, the grandson of William Penn (founder of the Province of Pennsylvania) and was originally published in London in 1816, and has been out of print since. This text is one of the earliest examples of the "sayings of the Desert Fathers" that offers insights into the contemplative tradition of early Christianity.

Ever wanted to uncover the secrets buried under Egypt’s golden sands?

This book, Sands of Time, Echoes of Eternity, takes you straight into the heart of ancient Egypt. It’s about the treasuresーlike dazzling crowns and tiny shabti dollsーthat meant everything to the people who made them. You’ll learn why they mattered so much for the afterlife. The book digs into the spooky tales of curses too. Were they real? It looks at old protective spells and separates them from wild stories that grew later. You’ll see how science explains things like tomb dangersーthink funky mold, not magic. It covers royal tombs, like Tutankhamun’s, and even the graves of regular folks. There’s stuff on mummification, gods like Osiris, and how tombs were hidden from robbers. Plus, it explores big finds underwater and new tech like 3D scans that bring the past to life. It’s a mix of history, archaeology, and real talk about preserving Egypt’s wonders.

What makes this book special is how it stands out from the crowd. Other books might just dazzle you with shiny objects or scare you with curse hype. This one goes deeper. It uses the latest researchーlike DNA tests and radarーto solve old mysteries. It’s not stuck in boring academic jargon either; it’s written for anyone curious about Egypt. You’ll get the real scoop on why these treasures were more than just lootーthey were about faith and survival. It even asks tough questions other books skip: Who should own this stuff today?
