What She Said & What I Heard How One Man Shut Up and Started Listening【電子書籍】[ Stuart Watson ]

Meet a man who actually listens to women. An award-winning investigative journalist tells poignant stories in this compulsively readable memoir, each revealing a profound moment when a woman said something that he actually heard, transforming his life for the better. With more than 50 photos, plus dozens of links to bonus audio and video, each chapter is an immersive experience that grabs hold and does not let go.

Stuart Watson spent his first career earning a living by talking. His whole identity was wrapped up in being a Peabody-award-winning investigative reporter. Then he turned 55 and got fired. He began to doubt himself. He flirted with suicide. To escape such dark thoughts, he began a five-year odyssey conducting dozens and dozens of interviews for a podcast, a book, and a film. Increasingly, those interview subjects were women. But all too often, Stuart interrupted or "mansplained" or flat-out argued. It didn't work. So gradually he learned how to stop talking over women and really listen to them. The result is this book and a podcast called ManListening, in which Stuart elevates the stories of a diverse group of strong women who bounced back.

What She Said & What I Heard is a memoir told through a series of profound moments where a woman said something that Stuart actually heard. He shifted and changed because in a moment, he really listened. This book is for broken people and the people who don't know how to hear them. The Wedding Heard 'Round the World America's First Gay Marriage【電子書籍】[ Michael McConnell ]

On September 3, 1971, Michael McConnell and Jack Baker exchanged vows in the first legal same-sex wedding in the United States. Their remarkable story is told here for the first timeーa unique account of the passion and energy of the gay liberation movement in the sixties and seventies.

At the dawn of the modern gay movement (while New York’s Stonewall riots and San Francisco’s emerging political activism bloomed), these two young men insisted on making their commitment a legal reality. They were already crusaders for gay rights: Jack had twice been elected the University of Minnesota’s student presidentーthe first openly gay university student president in the country, an election reported by Walter Cronkite on network TV news. They were featured in Look magazine’s special issue about the American family and received letters of support from around the world.

The couple navigated complex procedures to obtain a state-issued marriage license. Their ceremony was conducted by a Methodist minister in a friend’s tiny Minneapolis apartment. Wearing matching white pantsuits, exchanging custom-designed rings, and sharing a tiered wedding cake, Michael and Jack celebrated their historic marriage. After reciting their vows, they sealed their promise to love and honor each other with a kiss and a signed marriage certificate.

Repercussions were immediate: Michael’s job offer at the University of Minnesota was rescinded, leading him to wage a battle against job discrimination with the help of the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union. The couple eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court with two precedent-setting cases.

Michael and Jack have retired from the public spotlight, but after four decades their marriage is still their joy and comfort. Living quietly in a Minneapolis bungalow, they exemplify a contemporary version of the American dream. Only now, with marriage equality in the headlines and the Supreme Court decision to make love the law of the land, are they willing to tell the entire story of their groundbreaking experiences. TIME magazine listed the twenty-five most influential marriages of all time and included Michael and Jack, and they were recently profiled in a cover story in the Sunday New York Times. Their long campaign for marriage equality and insistence on equal rights for all citizens is a model for advocates of social justice and an inspiration for everyone who struggles for acceptance in a less-than-equal world.

Ethical Loneliness: The Injustice of Not Being Heard - Jill Stauffer (Columbia University Press) 【紙書籍】 9780231171519

Roundabout Books
Ethical Loneliness: The Injustice of Not Being Heard著者: Jill Stauffer出版社: Columbia University Press出版日: 2018年02月27日古本ほぼ新品。 Ethical loneliness is the experience of being abandoned by humanity, compounded by the cruelty of wrongs not being acknowledged. It is the result of multiple lapses on the part of human beings and political institutions that, in failing to listen well to survivors, deny them redress by negating their testimony and thwarting their claims for justice. Jill Stauffer examines the root causes of ethical loneliness and how those in power revise history to serve their own ends rather than the needs of the abandoned. Out of this discussion, difficult truths about the desire and potential for political forgiveness, transitional justice, and political reconciliation emerge. Moving beyond a singular focus on truth commissions and legal trials, she considers more closely what is lost in the wake of oppression and violence, how selves and worlds are built and demolished, and who is responsible for re-creating lives after they are destroyed. Stauffer boldly argues that rebuilding worlds and just institutions after violence is a broad obligation and that those who care about justice must first confront their own assumptions about autonomy, liberty, and responsibility before an effective response to violence can take place. In building her claims, Stauffer draws on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, Jean Améry, Eve Sedgwick, and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as concrete cases of justice and injustice across the world.

At Gettysburg - What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle A True Narrative【電子書籍】[ Tillie Pierce Alleman ]

In "At Gettysburg - What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle," Tillie Pierce Alleman presents a vivid, first-person account of the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of a young girl. Her narrative combines the immediacy of a memoir with the fervent patriotic spirit of her time, offering readers a rare perspective on a pivotal moment in American history. Written with poignant detail, Alleman's prose captures not only the chaos of battle but also the resilience of the human spirit amidst despair. The book is situated in the broader context of Civil War literature, which often overlooks the voices of women and children, making it a unique contribution to this genre. Tillie Pierce Alleman, born in 1843 in Pennsylvania, witnessed the Battle of Gettysburg at the tender age of 15. Her experiences during this time were influenced by her strong family ties and the tumultuous events surrounding her. After the war, she felt compelled to document her memories, not just to preserve her personal history but to contribute to the collective memory of a nation grappling with the ramifications of civil strife. Her insights provide an invaluable lens through which to understand the emotional landscape of the era. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in Civil War history, women's narratives, and the cultural implications of war. Alleman's youthful perspective adds a layer of innocence and poignancy that enriches the historical account, making it an essential read for both scholars and casual readers alike. Engage with her story and reflect on the profound impact of history on personal lives.

Bombastes Furioso: 'I heard a most astonishing story''【電子書籍】[ Hugh Walpole ]

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on March 13th, 1884.

His father was an Anglican clergyman which involved postings abroad. Walpole’s early educated was by a Governess until, in 1893, his parents decided he needed a better education and the young boy was sent to England.

He first attended a preparatory school in Truro followed by Sir William Borlase's Grammar School in Marlow in 1895, where he was bullied, frightened and miserable.

The following year, 1897, the Walpole’s returned to England and Walpole became a day boy at Durham School. His refuge was the local library and its books.

From 1903 to 1906 Walpole studied history at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and there, in 1905, had his first work published, the critical essay "Two Meredithian Heroes".

Walpole was also attempting to cope with and come to terms with his homosexual feelings and to find “that perfect friend”.

After a short spell tutoring in Germany and then teaching French at Epsom in 1908 he immersed himself in the literary world. In London he became a book reviewer for The Standard and wrote fiction in his spare time. In 1909, he published his first novel, ‘The Wooden Horse’ followed, in 1911, by ‘Mr Perrin and Mr Traill’. In early 1914 Henry James, in an article for The Times Literary Supplement, ranked Walpole among the finest of the younger British novelists.

As war approached, Walpole’s poor eyesight disqualified him from service and so he worked, based in Moscow, reporting for The Saturday Review and The Daily Mail. Although he visited the front in Poland, his dispatches failed to stop comments that he was not ‘doing his bit’ for the war effort.

Walpole was ready with a counter; an appointment as a Russian officer, in the Sanitar. He explained they were “part of the Red Cross that does the rough work at the front, carrying men out of the trenches, helping at the base hospitals in every sort of way, doing every kind of rough job”.

During a skirmish in June 1915 Walpole rescued a wounded soldier; his Russian comrades refused to help and this meant Walpole had to carry one end of a stretcher, dragging the man to safety. He was awarded the Cross of Saint George. For his wartime work he was later awarded the CBE in 1918.

After hostilities ended Walpole continued to write and publish and began a career on the highly lucrative lecture tour in the United States.

In 1924 Walpole met Harold Cheevers, who soon became his constant companion and remained for the rest of his life; “that perfect friend”.

Hollywood’s MGM studios, invited him in 1934 to write the script for a film of David Copperfield. Walpole also had a small acting role in the film.

In 1937 Walpole was offered a knighthood and accepted although Kipling, Hardy, Galsworthy had all refused. “I'm not of their class... Besides I shall like being a knight," he said.

His health was plagued by diabetes, made worse by the frenetic pace of his life.

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE, died of a heart attack at his home at Brackenburn, on June 1st, 1941. I Heard You, Lord【電子書籍】[ Erline Dennis ]

I Heard you, Lord, says author Erline Dennis, who is an earnest and attentive listener to God’s Word. The title poem, “I Heard You, Lord,” bespeaks the author’s profound faith in God. Hope emanates from the poem “The Cross,” and “Why, Mama?” records a crisis in faith after the death of the author’s mother. Soon, however, faith again runs deep in the verse “Outstretched Arms,” in which the poet writes: “O Lord, I know / That You see by day and by night. / Not ever letting even one / Out of sight.” The sight of a big spectacular cloud reminds her of the Second Coming of Jesus in the work titled “The Cloud in the Sky.” With inspiration and warmth, here are poems that clearly and directly share one’s celebration of faith.

We Will Be Heard Women's Struggles for Political Power in the United States【電子書籍】[ Jo Freeman ]

In We Will Be Heard, noted political scientist Jo Freeman chronicles the struggles of women in the United States for political power. Most of their stories are little-known, but Freeman's compelling portrait of women working for change reminds us that women have never been silent in the political affairs of the nation. From J. Ellen Foster's address to the 1892 Republican Convention to Nancy Pelosi's 2007 election as the first female Speaker of the House, women have worked to influence politics at every level. Well before most could vote, women campaigned for candidates and lobbied to shape public policy. Men welcomed their work, but not their ideas. Even with equal suffrage women faced many barriers to full political participation. The fifteen case studies of women's struggles for political influence in this book provide the historical context for today's political events. Starting with an overview of when and why political women have been studied, the three sections of the book look at different ways in whi

(Don't) Stop Me if You've Heard This Before and Other Essays on Writing Fiction【電子書籍】[ Peter Turchi ]

In (Don’t) Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Before, Peter Turchi combines personal narrative and close reading of a wide range of stories and novels to reveal how writers create the fiction that matters to us. Building on his much-loved Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer, Turchi leads readers and writers to an understanding of how the intricate mechanics of storytellingーincluding shifts in characters’ authority, the subtle manipulation of images, careful attention to point of view, the strategic release of information, and even digressing from the (apparent) storyーcan create powerful effects.

Using examples from Dickens, Chekhov, and Salinger, and Twain to more contemporary writers including Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, E. L. Doctorow, Jenny Erpenbeck, Adam Johnson, Mohsin Hamid, Jai Chakrabarti, Yoko Ogawa, Richard Powers, Deborah Eisenberg, Olga Tokarczuk, Rachel Cusk, and Colson Whitehead, Turchi offers illuminating insights into the inner workings of fiction as well as practical advice for writers looking to explore their craft from a fresh angle beyond the fundamentals of character and setting, plot, and scene.

While these essays draw from decades of teaching undergraduate and graduate students, they also speak to writers working on their own. In “Out of the Workshop, into the Laboratory,” Turchi discusses how anyone can make the most of discussions of stories or novels in progress, and in “Reading Like a Writer” he provides guidelines for learning from writing you admire. Perhaps best of all, these essays by a writer the Houston Chronicle has called “one of the country’s foremost thinkers on the art of writing” are as entertaining as they are edifying, always reminding us of the power and pleasure of storytelling.

The chapters invite music teachers and scholars to experience and confront music education stories from multiple perspectives and worldviews, inviting an international readership to engage in critical dialogue with and about marginalized voices in music. Tag a novel【電子書籍】[ Barry Heard ]

As a lad in the high country of eastern Victoria, Tag Wardell shows an extraordinary gift with animals: he is followed to school by his pets; his rapport with his horse, Dimble, becomes the talk of the district; and he even manages to befriend a mob of brumbies during an adventure with his schoolmates in the Dargo high plains.

Later, when he becomes a blacksmith, locals come to watch him at work, amazed at his ability to calm the meanest of nags. But 1914 brings war, and the government’s patriotic fervour entices Tag and his mates to join the Light Horse Brigade.

For Tag, war begins as an adventure. On the convoy to Egypt, he is quickly singled out to help the distressed horses. Then, while on leave in Cairo, he meets Jill, a nurse, but their brief romance is cut short as Gallipoli looms. Tag’s life spirals into one of survival in the day-to-day madness of the trenches.

In the years that follow, Tag comes up against conditions that are terrible for man and beast, and he discovers the hardship and joy that come with wartime love. In the face of it all, his unique abilities bring about essential changes in the handling of horses under fire ー and expose him to death and disaster.

Barry Heard, author of the bestselling Vietnam War memoir Well Done, Those Men, has here produced a deeply moving, fiercely anti-war novel that blazes with authenticity. Based on the experiences of a World War I veteran whom the author knew, it brings new insights to the Gallipoli legend and Australia’s battles on the Western Front.

Tag is unforgettable ー a bush tale, a family saga, a romance, and a revelation of the human spirit’s ability to survive war’s inhumanity.

Heaven't You Heard?【電子書籍】[ Geanna Culbertson ]

Some people fantasize about happily ever after. Turns out the "after" to define my story is the afterlife. A teenage Guardian Angel's work is never done.

My name is Grace Reyes Cardiff. I was seventeen when my mom and I died in a car crash. Don't waste your time grieving for me; I've already done that and I'm trying to move forward because Heaven gave me a big to-do list.

See, once I made it past the Pearly Gates and got the basic questions out of the way (What's the deal with Stonehenge? Is my dead dog here?) I learned that I'm part of a small percentage of people with a soul qualified to serve as a Guardian Angel.

Now I'm being sent back to Earth to protect a boy named Henry Sun who has the potential to positively and significantly impact humankind. Which means I have to harness my magical angel powers and natural spunk to thwart the dangers of life and demons who try to foil angels when they're not taking laps in lakes of fire. That's all while fixing my relationship with my mother, not getting distracted by the Liberian dreamboat in my angel training class, and seeing if I can be friends with the one demon down there who doesn't seem like he belongs.

It's funnyーI thought Heaven would be all about rainbows, cake, and puppies. I didn't think it would involve a massive identity crisis and going back to high school.
