"Hadrian's Lover is a stunning novel about a dystopian society disguised as a utopian one...it raises difficult questions about right and wrong, government control, and an individual's right to express himself freely and be accepted for his sexual preference, regardless of what it is." - Tyler R. Tichelaar, PH.D. and author of the award-winning Narrow Lives What if you lived in a world where homosexuality was the norm and all forms of heterosexual behavior were illegal? In the near future the human population has grown to such excess that the earth is no longer able to sustain humanity's astronomical numbers. Poverty, starvation, and disease are rampant. Only the country of Hadrian seems able to defend itself against the ravages of overpopulation by restricting its growth and encasing its country behind a defensive wall. Procreation does not happen by chance in Hadrian. There are no unwanted pregnancies. No accidents. All pregnancies occur through in vitro fertilization, and every citizen is responsible for rearing one of Hadrian's children. Heterosexuality is deemed the ill that has led humanity to the brink. In Hadrian, no one dares to express interest in the opposite sex; to do so would result in exile or reeducation. Hadrian's Lover tells the story of Todd Middleton, a teenage boy struggling to keep the secret of his heterosexuality. Read on, and feel with him as he suffers the indignities of a society determined to "cure" him of his plight. Patricia Marie Budd is a high school English teacher living in northern Alberta, Canada. She has been a safe zone for her LGBT* students throughout her twenty year career. Hadrian's Lover is her third novel.

The Origin of Empire Rome from the Republic to Hadrian (264 BC - AD 138)【電子書籍】[ David Potter ]

In 264 BC, a Roman army was poised to cross from southern Italy into Sicily. They couldn't know that this crossing would be Rome's first step on its journey from local republic to vast and powerful empire.

At the beginning of the three dramatic centuries that make up this book's narrative, Rome had no emperor and limited global influence; by the book's end, Hadrian was set to pass into history as one of the greatest emperors, whose territories stretched from England to Turkey.

In David Potter's masterful history of this period, we trace the process of cultural, political and civic transformation which led to the creation of a monarchy and the acquisition of territory, via wars with Hannibal, the destruction of Carthage, Augustan Empire-building and Hadrian's famous wall, all of which contributed to the most successful multi-cultural state in the history of Europe. This is a lively, scholarly approach to an essential era.

Hadrian the Seventh Historical Novel【電子書籍】[ Frederick Rolfe ]

Hadrian the Seventh is novel of extreme wish-fulfillment developed out of an article he wrote on the Papal Conclave to elect the successor to Pope Leo XIII. The prologue introduces us to George Arthur Rose ? a failed candidate for the priesthood denied his vocation by the machinations and bungling of the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical machinery, and now living alone with his yellow cat. Rose is visited by two prominent churchmen, one a Cardinal Archbishop. The two propose to right the wrongs done to him, ordain him a priest, and take him to Rome where the Conclave to elect the new Pope has reached deadlock. When he arrives in Rome he finds that the Cardinals have been inspired, divinely or otherwise, to offer him the Papacy. He accepts, and since the only previous English Pope was Adrian (or Hadrian) IV, he takes the name Hadrian VII.

Socia landed with a thud on top of hard, male flesh. She gasped out loud as she tried to catch her breath. She felt like she had been spun around in a washing machine. Her head pounded and her heart raced. When she had grabbed hold of Hadrian’s arm and followed him through the time portal, she hadn’t been thinking of anything else other than knowing she was meant to be at his side, at that moment.
“Bloody hell,” Hadrian flung his head back and groaned, one arm wrapping around Socia’s waist. “I feel like I’ve been kicked by elephants.”
She rested against the solid, warm bulk of muscle beneath her for several minutes. There was only silence now. Before, as they whirled through time and space, the cacophony of sound which tore at her ears had made Socia scream. To hear the cries of terror coming from her own lips was frightening. She was not one who scared easily. But the rush through the time portal had slammed terror into her soul. Her eyes still ached from holding them closed against the violent flashes of neon yellow and vivid purple that had pounded at them. Socia sighed, her body sinking against his. His? What theー Her eyes snapped open. It was him. She wasn’t sure whether she should be alarmed or relieved.
“Let me go!” She slapped at his arm. It was so rigid with muscle, it felt like slapping side of beef.
“Hey, you landed on me, lady,” Hadrian pointed out, his arms dropping from around her body.
Socia pushed her hands on his chest to lever herself off from him. She knew her arms were shaking and it wasn’t just because of wild trip down the cosmic rabbit hole they had taken. “A gentleman wouldn’t have grabbed.” She swung one leg over and rolled off from him, landing flat on her back beside him.
“I’m not a gentleman.” Hadrian stretched his hands over his head and groaned. “You weigh a ton.”
“I do not!” She would have slapped him if she had the strength to lift her hand. “And that was a rude thing to say that.” Surprisingly Socia felt more hurt by that than any blow that had ever landed on her.
“I’m not known for my manners.”
“Evidently.”

The idea of a colour-book on Hadrian's Wall was suggested to me by friends in 1914. Then came the Great War, blotting out all thought of work of this kind. But in 1920 I was taken by these friends along the line of the Wall, and I soon fell a victim to its many attractions. My friends went home; but I found hospitality at the farms and other houses in the neighbourhood, and began to paint at once. Before long I decided to "walk the Wall" every foot of the way, 73? miles, from sea to sea, being inspired thereto by the example and the record of William Hutton. Many of my readers will need an introduction to this delightful character, whose bookーto which I shall often have occasion to referーis now out of print. William Hutton was an arch?ologist of Birmingham, who in 1801, at the age of seventy-eight, travelled alone and on foot "six hundred miles to see a shattered Wall." He then published an account of the Wall and the walk, written in a very original and interesting style, although, as he tells us, "the Battledore, at an age not exceeding six, was the last book I used at school." "The respectable and amiable Author" (to use the words of contemporary critics) started from Birmingham with his daughter; but since she rode on a pillion behind a servant, and he went on foot, they can hardly be said to have "accompanied" each other. They used to meet at the inns, for dinner, bed and breakfast; and at Penrith they parted, she making her way to Keswick and the Lakes, he to Carlisle and his beloved Wall. He sent his daughter two notes during his Wall journey: the first from Carlisle, in which he said he was sound in body, shoe and stocking, and had just risen from a lodging among fleas; the second, from Newcastle, when he wrote (to quote her words) "that he had been at the Wall's End; that the weather was so hot he was obliged to repose under hedges; and that the country was infested with thieves: but, lest I should be under any apprehensions for his personal safety, he added they were only such as demolished his idol, the Wall, by stealing the stones of which it was composed."

Hadrian the Seventh【電子書籍】[ Frederick Rolfe ]

In "Hadrian the Seventh," Frederick Rolfe crafts a rich narrative blending autobiography, fiction, and theological exploration within the framework of a fantastical papacy. The novel follows the protagonist, an English writer named Father Hadrian, who unexpectedly ascends to the papal throne after a series of surreal, dreamlike events. Rolfe's lush prose is imbued with vivid imagery and complex characterizations that reflect his deep understanding of Catholicism and the socio-political intrigues of the time. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Europe, the work explores themes of faith, power, and the paradoxes of religious authority, navigating between idealism and harsh realities with a unique blend of satire and reverence. Frederick Rolfe, also known as Baron Corvo, was an eccentric and controversial figure whose personal experiences as an outsider fueled his literary endeavors. His own struggles with identity and acceptance within societal and ecclesiastical structures resonate through Hadrian's character. Rolfe's knowledge of Catholic doctrine and history, coupled with his artistic inclinations, imbues the novel with authenticity and profound philosophical inquiry, offering insight into both his life and the broader human experience. "Hadrian the Seventh" is not merely a novel; it is an invitation to ponder the complexities of faith and power. Hadrian the Seventh (Historical Novel)【電子書籍】[ Frederick Rolfe ]

In "Hadrian the Seventh," Frederick Rolfe masterfully weaves a narrative that explores themes of ambition, spirituality, and the human condition through the lens of a fictionalized papacy. The novel, rich with baroque language and vivid imagery, immerses readers in the intricacies of early 20th-century ecclesiastical politics and the personal struggles of its protagonist, George Arthur Rose, who becomes Pope Hadrian VII. Rolfe's unique literary style, blending humor, pathos, and theological discourse, situates the novel within a context of early modernist literature, challenging the expectations of both character and genre. Frederick Rolfe, an enigmatic figure in literary history, experienced a life marked by rejection and peculiarities that inspired his exploration of religious themes and character-driven narratives. His background as a Catholic convert and his notorious social eccentricities profoundly informed his writings, allowing him to delve into the juxtaposition of divine aspiration and human frailty. "Hadrian the Seventh" serves as Rolfe's magnum opus, drawing upon his experiences with rejection from society and the Church to forge a compelling critique of authority and artistry. This novel is recommended for readers interested in richly textured historical fiction that confronts the complexities of faith and identity. Rolfe's intricate prose and nuanced characters offer an engaging meditation on power and the quest for meaning, making "Hadrian the Seventh" an essential read for anyone captivated by the interplay of history and the literary imagination.

Hadrian the Seventh Historical Novel - A Story of The Reformer【電子書籍】[ Frederick Rolfe ]

In 2014, The Guardian placed "Hadrian the Seventh" on the list of the 100 best novels written in English. A historical novel by the English novelist Frederick Rolfe, it is based on his essay the Papal Conclave to elect the successor to Pope Leo XIII. It tells about an English priest that got invited by two Catholic priests to Rome, where the Conclave was gathered to elect the new Pope. Suddenly, the Conclave gives this position to him, and since the only previous English Pope was Adrian (or Hadrian) IV, he takes the name Hadrian VII. He is an unconventional pope - a chain smoker wishing to reform the church against fierce opposition from the established Roman Catholic hierarchy. Will he manage to stand the plots and intrigues, and is his reform needed? Those are the matters for readers to discover.

Perched along the banks of the Tiber River, Castel Sant'Angelo stands as a silent witness to nearly two millennia of Roman history. Originally conceived as Emperor Hadrian's monumental mausoleum, this iconic structure evolved into a medieval fortress, a papal residence, and a powerful symbol of resilience and authority. In 'Castel Sant'Angelo Through the Ages,' historian Sergio Carrara takes readers on an extraordinary journey through the layers of architectural innovation, political intrigue, and cultural transformation that shaped this enduring landmark. From its beginnings as a testament to imperial grandeur to its strategic role during the turbulent Middle Ages and Renaissance, the book explores how Castel Sant'Angelo mirrored the shifting tides of power in Rome. Richly illustrated and meticulously researched, this work unveils the stories behind the fortress's fortifications, the legends of the Archangel Michael, and its critical role during the Sack of Rome. A testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of human ambition, Castel Sant'Angelo continues to captivate as a bridge between the ancient and the modern. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or simply curious about Rome's storied past, this book offers an unparalleled glimpse into the life of one of the Eternal City's most iconic monuments.

What if accepting yourself meant being rejected by everyone you knew? In the twenty-second century, the country of Hadrian struggles to be an example to the world while continuing its isolationist policy. It is a country where being homosexual is the norm and preferred sexual orientation, while heterosexuals are blamed for overpopulating the earth and destroying the environment. But despite genetic engineering of the population by Hadrian's scientists, there are still those who struggle with heterosexual feelings and when they act upon them, they are severely punished. Todd Middleton was one who broke Hadrian's law-and his best friend and lover Frank Hunter murdered him rather than see him experience further violent sexual reeducation attempts. Now Frank is sentenced to a lifetime of military service for his actions. Meanwhile, more heterosexuals are trying to stand up for themselves amid rage and intolerance. Straight men and women face discrimination, loss of jobs and livelihood, abandonment by friends, and even rape and murder at the hands of ignorant homosexual fanatics. But a small group of activists band together to combat the rage and hate that surrounds them. When they are joined by Hadrian's last surviving founder, and the star of a major national news program, things begin to fall apart for Hadrian's conservatives. But will those promoting the heterosexual agenda go too far, reversing what Hadrian has accomplished and causing it to break apart and descend into madness like the rest of the planet? Hadrian's Rage, a sequel to Hadrian's Lover, offers shocking surprises and answers that will make you rethink everything you thought was or should be normal. Praise for Hadrian's Rage Tyler Tichelaar, Superior Book Productions: "I thought Budd's previous book, Hadrian's Lover, a powerful and highly imaginative novel, but Budd has now superseded it. Hadrian's Rage leaves me in awe. I don't think anyone who reads this book will ever forget it, and hopefully, it will help to change the world, one heart at a time." International Praise for Hadrian's Lover Named Editor's Choice for September 2013 by So So Gay: "Beautiful, heart-wrenchingly poignant, and brilliantly conceived." - Jake Basford, So So Gay, London, England "Hadrian's Lover inspires internal debate and thought. As a text in a high school classroom it would do wonders and possibly change the world." - Drew Rowsome, My Gay Toronto, Ontario, Canada
