The Halifax Explosion Canada's Worst Disaster【電子書籍】[ Ken Cuthbertson ]

On December 6, 1917, the French munitions ship Mont Blanc and the Norwegian war-relief vessel Imo collided in the harbour at Halifax, Nova Scotia. That accident sparked a fire and an apocalyptic explosion that was the largest man-made blast prior to the 1945 dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Together with the killer tsunami that followed, the explosion devastated the entire city in the wink of an eye and instantly killed more than two thousand people.

While much has been written about the disaster, there is still more to the story, including the investigation of the key figures involved, the histories of the ships that collided and the confluence of circumstances that brought these two vessels together to touch off one of the most tragic man-made disasters of the twentieth century.

The Halifax Explosion is a fresh, revealing account that finally answers questions that have lingered for a century: Was the explosion a disaster triggered by simple human error? Was it caused by the negligence of the ships’ pilots or captains? Was it the result of shortcomings in harbour practices and protocols? Or was the blastーas many people at the time insistedーthe result of sabotage carried out by wartime German agents?

December 6, 2017, marks the centennial of the great Halifax explosion. The Halifax Explosion tells the gripping, as-yet untold story of Canada’s worst disasterーa haunting tale of survival, incredible courage and, ultimately, the triumph of the human spirit.

Standing at the Edge Finding Freedom Where Fear and Courage Meet【電子書籍】[ Joan Halifax ]

Transform suffering into the power of compassion through embracing life's edges.

"Joan Halifax is a clearheaded and fearless traveler and in this book…she offers us a map of how to travel courageously and fruitfully, for our own benefit and the benefit of all beings." ーFrom the foreword by Rebecca Solnit

Standing at the Edge is an evocative examination of how we can respond to suffering, live our fullest lives, and remain open to the full spectrum of our human experience.

Joan Halifax has enriched thousands of lives around the world through her work as a humanitarian, a social activist, an anthropologist, and as a Buddhist teacher. Over many decades, she has also collaborated with neuroscientists, clinicians, and psychologists to understand how contemplative practice can be a vehicle for social transformation. Through her unusual background, she developed an understanding of how our greatest challenges can become the most valuable source of our wisdomーand how we can transform our experience of suffering into the power of compassion for the benefit of others.

Halifax has identified five psychological territories she calls Edge Statesーaltruism, empathy, integrity, respect, and engagementーthat epitomize strength of character. Yet each of these states can also be the cause of personal and social suffering. In this way, these five psychological experiences form edges, and it is only when we stand at these edges that we become open to the full range of our human experience and discover who we really are.

Recounting the experiences of caregivers, activists, humanitarians, politicians, parents, and teachers, incorporating the wisdom of Zen traditions and mindfulness practices, and rooted in Halifax's groundbreaking research on compassion, Standing at the Edge is destined to become a contemporary classic. A powerful guide on how to find the freedom we seek for others and ourselves, it is a book that will serve us all.

Halifax Town: From Ball to Lillis 1968-1999【電子書籍】[ Johnny Meynell ]

Halifax Town was formed in 1971 by an enthusiastic band of men. They had the intention of taking the club into the top division. Supporters are still waiting. Until recently, Halifax Town laboured under a poor image. The club played in a ramshackle stadium and regularly had to apply for re-election to the Football League. Demotion to the Vauxhall Conference in 1993 could have spelled the end. But somehow the club not only survived, but also reinvented itself. In 1998 the team won the Conference championship Halifax Towns first major honour. This, together with stadium improvements, earned promotion back into the League. This book begins with the 1968-69 season when promotion was gained for the first time. Amid the subsequent woes, there were memorable moments to treasure, such as victory over Manchester City in 1980 and, of course, promotion in 1998. In this nostalgic journey, there used to be one over-riding theme survival for that was Halifax Towns first and last objective. Whenever the Town supporters sang Therell always be the Shaymen, they did not do so in jest. This book is as much about them as it is about the club, which since the end of the period covered, 1999 has again fallen on hard times.

The Halifax Connection【電子書籍】[ Marie Jakober ]

A Canadian counter-intelligence novel with a memorable romance at its heart, The Halifax Connection brings to life 1860s Montreal and Halifax with wit, action and a finale that will leave you breathless.

Canada in 1862 is still a few scattered colonies run by an indifferent British crown. As the American Civil War heats up south of the border, Southern Confederates flood into Montreal and Halifax, among them numerous spies and military officers planning secret missions against the Union ? missions they hope will provoke a war between England and the United States, throwing the whole weight of the British Empire into the Confederate camp.

Erryn Shaw is a charming British aristocrat who has been banished to the colonies and now wants nothing more than to run a theatre. Instead, he is convinced to spy for the British and finds himself befriending Southern Rebels to learn of their plans. On a mission to Montreal, he gets wind of a sinister plot?a plan the Confederates believe will win them the war. And he can’t seem to find a way to stop it.

At the same time, he meets and courts an intriguing woman, Sylvie Bowen, who escaped the cotton mills of England seeking a better life. Though she’s drawn to Erryn’s charm and cleverness, she once met with disaster at the hands of the South, and he knows it is only a matter of time until she discovers his ties to the Rebels and turns against him.

Drawing on actual events, The Halifax Connection captures a fascinating and largely forgotten piece of Canada’s history. From the comfortable parlours and ballrooms of the bustling metropolis of Montreal to the back alleyways of the port town of Halifax, to the deadly high seas patrolled by Southern raiders, the novel draws a remarkable picture of Canada in the mid-1800s ? its people, its power struggles, its hopes and its dreams.

Halifax Harbor was filled with naval convoys and merchant vessels while factories worked overtime in support of the Allied war effort in Europe. But on December 6, Canada's worst disaster struck, as two shipsーone carrying high explosivesーcollided. The resulting blast killed and injured thousands, razing the city's North End and destroying nearly everything in its path.

This history is an account of tremendous human suffering and devastation, yet also of human bravery and survival against all odds. Chaos and confusion reigned that day in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, but what followed was a massive relief effort involving charitable assistance from all over the globeーespecially Massachusetts.

Explosion in Halifax Harbour, 1917 includes a detailed account of the event, chronicling many remarkable human tragedies, rescue and relief efforts, attempts to place blame for the collision, and the reconstruction program that created Canada's first government-assisted housing program. Also included are 60 full-color images as well as sidebars on many monuments and commemorations that pay tribute to this catastrophic event.

"Begins with a history of Halifax and its harbor and how important it was for the war effort in Europe…while there were countless acts of heroism, Soucoup writes there were also acts of looting and profiteering." ー The Star

Bestselling historian Andrew Roberts's much-admired reappraisal of one of the most influential ? and controversial ? British politicians of the 1930s.

A fox-hunting Anglo-Catholic aristocrat, nicknamed 'The Holy Fox' by Churchill for his political guile, Halifax was one of the most prominent Tory politicians of the interwar period. As Viceroy of India, he struck a deal with Gandhi that ended the Civil Disobedience campaign. His meeting with Hitler in 1937 was a milestone in appeasement, yet just days before the infamous Munich agreement, he demanded 'the destruction of Nazism'. By May 1940, for many it was Halifax, not Churchill, who was the natural choice for Britain's war leader.

Andrew Roberts' acclaimed biography draws on private documents to offer a nuanced reappraisal of an enigmatic, influential and much-maligned politician.

Between 1857 and 1970, thousands of children came to live at the Halifax Protestant Orphans' Home. Many faced abuse, poverty, and neglect before, during, and after their time in the facility. All were vulnerable young wards, left in the trusted care of an institution that, in countless cases, would ultimately betray them.

In Wounded Hearts: Memories of the Halifax Protestant Orphans' Home veteran journalist Lois Legge digs deep into the lived experiences of the children who passed through those doors, painting an indelible picture of innocence lost. Simon Spatz From Holocaust to Halifax, A Story of Survival and Success【電子書籍】[ Michael Cobden ]

A fascinating biography of the high-profile Jewish Nova Scotian businessmanーa man who not only survived but thrived against all odds.

In Simon Spatz, former journalism professor Michael Cobdon tells the remarkable story of a fighter, a survivor, an achiever, a man of extraordinary determination and spirit.

After bringing his family out of poverty in Poland, surviving the Holocaust in an area where 97 per cent of Jews were murdered, and immigrating to Canada at nearly forty with little money and no knowledge of English, Spatz would open a successful Halifax grocery business before entering into real estate in the 1950s. Known today as the magnate behind the international, multi-billion-dollar real estate development firm Southwest Properties, Spatz remains an inspiration to Nova Scotia's business and Jewish communities.

What his family calls a "larger-than-family-pride human narrative," Simon Spatz is the story of a man shaped, but not destroyed, by one of the cruelest events in human history; a no-holds-barred depiction of a man who did more than build a life for himself and his family: he left behind a legacy.

A World War II aviator tells his story of evading the enemy in occupied territory after being shot down, and what happened to the rest of his crew.
On the night of April 22, 1944, Tom Wingham was the bomb aimer in the crew of a 76 Squadron Halifax shot down while on the way to bomb D?sseldorf. Coming to in a tangle of parachute and harness straps, he realized the precariousness of his situation and so, dazed and aching with a painful concussion and navigating by the stars alone, he quickly set off on his long and difficult journey home through occupied territory, constantly depending on the kindness of others who risked their lives to help keep him hidden.
He made his way from Holland, at the hands of "The Escape" and was then passed via "L'Arm?e Secr?te," a London-run organization operating in the east of Belgium, but fell right into the path of the Gestapo. In a deadly game of hide and seek, he evaded his captors long enough to witness the retreat of German soldiers as he stayed at the house of Madame Schoofs, which became a temporary German HQ.
In the 1980s, Tom Wingham assisted a Dutch air historian with some research and this prompted him to look into the details of his own crash. What he uncovered not only shed more light on his own story but also those of his fellow crew members. He plotted approximately where each person landed that fateful nightーand slowly their incredible stories emerged.
