In "A Character of King Charles the Second," George Savile, Marquis of Halifax, offers a profound and intricate portrait of one of England's most enigmatic monarchs. Through a lens of political observation and personal reflection, Halifax employs a blend of satire and earnest prose, painting Charles II's character with both admiration and critique. The work is characterized by its astute psychological insights and rich historical context, revealing the complexities of a ruler who balanced charm with perceived moral shortcomings amid the turbulence of Restoration England. George Savile, a notable statesman, and political thinker of the 17th century, was deeply influenced by the shifting dynamics of his time. His experiences at court and involvement in political discourse lend authenticity to his character analysis. An acute observer of power, Savile navigates the intricacies of royal behavior, drawing on his own encounters with Charles II, which shaped his perspective on leadership and governance.
Transform suffering into the power of compassion through embracing life's edges.

"Joan Halifax is a clearheaded and fearless traveler and in this book…she offers us a map of how to travel courageously and fruitfully, for our own benefit and the benefit of all beings." ーFrom the foreword by Rebecca Solnit

Standing at the Edge is an evocative examination of how we can respond to suffering, live our fullest lives, and remain open to the full spectrum of our human experience.

Joan Halifax has enriched thousands of lives around the world through her work as a humanitarian, a social activist, an anthropologist, and as a Buddhist teacher. Over many decades, she has also collaborated with neuroscientists, clinicians, and psychologists to understand how contemplative practice can be a vehicle for social transformation. Through her unusual background, she developed an understanding of how our greatest challenges can become the most valuable source of our wisdomーand how we can transform our experience of suffering into the power of compassion for the benefit of others.

Halifax has identified five psychological territories she calls Edge Statesーaltruism, empathy, integrity, respect, and engagementーthat epitomize strength of character. Yet each of these states can also be the cause of personal and social suffering. In this way, these five psychological experiences form edges, and it is only when we stand at these edges that we become open to the full range of our human experience and discover who we really are.

Recounting the experiences of caregivers, activists, humanitarians, politicians, parents, and teachers, incorporating the wisdom of Zen traditions and mindfulness practices, and rooted in Halifax's groundbreaking research on compassion, Standing at the Edge is destined to become a contemporary classic. A powerful guide on how to find the freedom we seek for others and ourselves, it is a book that will serve us all.

The Halifax Explosion Canada's Worst Disaster【電子書籍】[ Ken Cuthbertson ]

On December 6, 1917, the French munitions ship Mont Blanc and the Norwegian war-relief vessel Imo collided in the harbour at Halifax, Nova Scotia. That accident sparked a fire and an apocalyptic explosion that was the largest man-made blast prior to the 1945 dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Together with the killer tsunami that followed, the explosion devastated the entire city in the wink of an eye and instantly killed more than two thousand people.

While much has been written about the disaster, there is still more to the story, including the investigation of the key figures involved, the histories of the ships that collided and the confluence of circumstances that brought these two vessels together to touch off one of the most tragic man-made disasters of the twentieth century.

The Halifax Explosion is a fresh, revealing account that finally answers questions that have lingered for a century: Was the explosion a disaster triggered by simple human error? Was it caused by the negligence of the ships’ pilots or captains? Was it the result of shortcomings in harbour practices and protocols? Or was the blastーas many people at the time insistedーthe result of sabotage carried out by wartime German agents?

December 6, 2017, marks the centennial of the great Halifax explosion. The Halifax Explosion tells the gripping, as-yet untold story of Canada’s worst disasterーa haunting tale of survival, incredible courage and, ultimately, the triumph of the human spirit.

Halifax Town: From Ball to Lillis 1968-1999【電子書籍】[ Johnny Meynell ]

Halifax Town was formed in 1971 by an enthusiastic band of men. They had the intention of taking the club into the top division. Supporters are still waiting. Until recently, Halifax Town laboured under a poor image. The club played in a ramshackle stadium and regularly had to apply for re-election to the Football League. Demotion to the Vauxhall Conference in 1993 could have spelled the end. But somehow the club not only survived, but also reinvented itself. In 1998 the team won the Conference championship Halifax Towns first major honour. This, together with stadium improvements, earned promotion back into the League. This book begins with the 1968-69 season when promotion was gained for the first time. Amid the subsequent woes, there were memorable moments to treasure, such as victory over Manchester City in 1980 and, of course, promotion in 1998. In this nostalgic journey, there used to be one over-riding theme survival for that was Halifax Towns first and last objective. Whenever the Town supporters sang Therell always be the Shaymen, they did not do so in jest. This book is as much about them as it is about the club, which since the end of the period covered, 1999 has again fallen on hard times.

The Halifax Connection【電子書籍】[ Marie Jakober ]

A Canadian counter-intelligence novel with a memorable romance at its heart, The Halifax Connection brings to life 1860s Montreal and Halifax with wit, action and a finale that will leave you breathless.

Canada in 1862 is still a few scattered colonies run by an indifferent British crown. As the American Civil War heats up south of the border, Southern Confederates flood into Montreal and Halifax, among them numerous spies and military officers planning secret missions against the Union ? missions they hope will provoke a war between England and the United States, throwing the whole weight of the British Empire into the Confederate camp.

Erryn Shaw is a charming British aristocrat who has been banished to the colonies and now wants nothing more than to run a theatre. Instead, he is convinced to spy for the British and finds himself befriending Southern Rebels to learn of their plans. On a mission to Montreal, he gets wind of a sinister plot?a plan the Confederates believe will win them the war. And he can’t seem to find a way to stop it.

At the same time, he meets and courts an intriguing woman, Sylvie Bowen, who escaped the cotton mills of England seeking a better life. Though she’s drawn to Erryn’s charm and cleverness, she once met with disaster at the hands of the South, and he knows it is only a matter of time until she discovers his ties to the Rebels and turns against him.

Drawing on actual events, The Halifax Connection captures a fascinating and largely forgotten piece of Canada’s history. From the comfortable parlours and ballrooms of the bustling metropolis of Montreal to the back alleyways of the port town of Halifax, to the deadly high seas patrolled by Southern raiders, the novel draws a remarkable picture of Canada in the mid-1800s ? its people, its power struggles, its hopes and its dreams.

The Holy Fox The Life of Lord Halifax【電子書籍】[ Andrew Roberts ]

Bestselling historian Andrew Roberts's much-admired reappraisal of one of the most influential ? and controversial ? British politicians of the 1930s.

A fox-hunting Anglo-Catholic aristocrat, nicknamed 'The Holy Fox' by Churchill for his political guile, Halifax was one of the most prominent Tory politicians of the interwar period. As Viceroy of India, he struck a deal with Gandhi that ended the Civil Disobedience campaign. His meeting with Hitler in 1937 was a milestone in appeasement, yet just days before the infamous Munich agreement, he demanded 'the destruction of Nazism'. By May 1940, for many it was Halifax, not Churchill, who was the natural choice for Britain's war leader.

Andrew Roberts' acclaimed biography draws on private documents to offer a nuanced reappraisal of an enigmatic, influential and much-maligned politician.

Catastrophe Stories and Lessons from the Halifax Explosion【電子書籍】[ T. Joseph Scanlon ]

Catastrophe weaves together compelling stories and potent lessons learned from the calamitous Halifax explosionーthe worst non-natural disaster in North America before 9/11.

On December 6, 1917, the Canadian city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was shattered when volatile cargo on the SS Mont-Blanc freighter exploded in the bustling wartime harbour. More than nineteen hundred people were killed and nine thousand injured. Across more than two square kilometres some 1200 homes, factories, schools and churches were obliterated or heavily damaged.

Written from a scholarly perspective but in a journalistic style accessible to the general reader, this book explores how the explosion influenced later emergency planning and disaster theory. Rich in firsthand accounts gathered in decades of research in Canada, the US, the UK, France and Norway, the book examines the disaster from all angles. It delivers an inspiring message: the women and men at “ground zero” responded speedily, courageously, and effectively, fighting fires, rescuing the injured, and sheltering the homeless. The book also shows that the generous assistance that later came from central Canada and the US also brought some unhelpful intrusions by outside authorities. Unable to imagine the horror of the initial crisis, they ignored or even vilified a number of the first responders.

This book will be of particular interest to disaster researchers and emergency planners along with journalists, and scholars of history, Maritime studies, and Canadian studies.

The second novella in Alexandra Vasti's “hot, smart, funny, and charming as hell”* Halifax Hellions series.

For seven years, Matilda Halifax and her twin have been the most scandalous ladies in London. But when Matilda accidentally sells erotic drawings of the brooding, reclusive Marquess of Ashford, she hasーperhapsーgone a bit too far.

Christian de Bord, Lord Ashford, knows what it’s like to be notorious. Ever since he was accused of murdering his wife, prurient gossip has kept him isolated from society, alone and determined to protect his adolescent sister Bea. But when Matilda Halifax’s salacious pamphlet appearsーfeaturing his own damned face!ーhe’s thrust back into the storm of public attention.

Bea’s painting teacher quits. Christian’s life is in an uproar. And the only person he can find to replace Bea’s tutor at his terrifying Gothic castle is Matilda herself. The last thing Christian needs is another scandalーespecially not one with the most sinfully tempting face he’s ever seen.

But Matilda is determined to right what she’s set wrong. One fake elopement later, Matilda finds herself in a carriage on the way to Northumberland with Christian, whose scowls do little to hide the wounds he carries or the scorching passion beneath his reserve. Only Matilda Halifax could turn Christian’s disciplined life so decidedly inside outーand only Matilda can persuade him that love just might be worth the risk.
