Native Country of the Heart A Memoir【電子書籍】[ Cherr?e Moraga ]

“[Written] with a poet’s verve. . . . This memoir’s beauty is in its fierce intimacy.” ーRoy Hoffman, The New York Times Book Review

Native Country of the Heart: A Memoir is, at its core, a mother-daughter story. The mother, Elvira, was hired out as a child, along with her siblings, by their own father to pick cotton in California’s Imperial Valley. The daughter, Cherr?e Moraga, is a brilliant, pioneering, queer Latina feminist. The story of these two women, and of their people, is woven together in an intimate memoir of critical reflection and deep personal revelation.

As a young woman, Elvira left California to work as a cigarette girl in glamorous late-1920s Tijuana, where a relationship with a wealthy white man taught her life lessons about power, sex, and opportunity. As Moraga charts her mother’s journeyーfrom impressionable young girl to battle-tested matriarch to, later on, an old woman suffering under the yoke of Alzheimer’sーshe traces her own self-discovery of her gender-queer body and Lesbian identity. As her mother’s memory fails, Moraga is driven to unearth forgotten remnants of a US Mexican diaspora, and an American story of cultural loss.

Poetically wrought and filled with insight into intergenerational trauma, Native Country of the Heart is a reckoning with white American history and a piercing love letter from a fearless daughter to her mother.

“A masterpiece of literary art.” ーMichael Nava, Los Angeles Review of Books

“Poignant, beautifully written.” ーKirkus Reviews, starred review

“A defiant, deep and soulful book about all our mothers, mother cultures, motherlands and languages.” ーJulia Alvarez, national bestselling author of In the Time of the Butterflies

Native Texan Stories from Deep in the Heart【電子書籍】[ Joe Holley ]

Native Texan: Stories from Deep in the Heart is a lively and personal tour of small town and big city Texas in search of what makes the state unique. Nationally acclaimed columnist Joe Holley is widely loved for his popular “Native Texan” column, which appears in the Houston Chronicle. In thirty stories curated from column archives, Holley introduces readers to his favorite people and places across the state. From interviews on the “weird” streets of Austin and his search for ghosts in Bigfoot to a decades-long love affair with everything about Marathon and hikes on the back trails of the Big Bend, Holley is a masterful storyteller. His instincts are backed by a seasoned journalist’s passion to measure legends and tall tales against investigations into what really happened. He reveals small-town Texas, and some small towns within the largest cities, with a style that has proven popular with readers and a keen eye for a unique spin on an old story. The result is an entertaining and certainly surprising view of the Lone Star state.

Most lives are lived solely in the present. But some lives are also lived with a spiritual and historical connection to the past. These lives grant us a sense of hope for the future. Native Heart is the story of Gabriel Horn and his attempt to live a modern man's life that's true to the indigenous spirit of this land we call America. As a teacher in the American Indian Movement Survival Schools, and as a writer, activist, husband, and father, Horn presents a challenging and haunting perspective on our "new world" culture and values. Whether it's revealing a genocide Western historians choose to ignore, enabling Native American prisoners to pray with the pipe, or teaching his own Native children the lessons of nature and history, Horn stays true to his heart and to the vision that inspired his journey. His encounters with the "shadow people," his relationship to the Earth, and his quest for understanding and purpose within the "Great Holy Mystery" are retold in this intimate autobiographical novel.

The Native Ground Indians and Colonists in the Heart of the Continent【電子書籍】[ Kathleen DuVal ]

In The Native Ground, Kathleen DuVal argues that it was Indians rather than European would-be colonizers who were more often able to determine the form and content of the relations between the two groups. Along the banks of the Arkansas and Mississippi rivers, far from Paris, Madrid, and London, European colonialism met neither accommodation nor resistance but incorporation. Rather than being colonized, Indians drew European empires into local patterns of land and resource allocation, sustenance, goods exchange, gender relations, diplomacy, and warfare. Placing Indians at the center of the story, DuVal shows both their diversity and our contemporary tendency to exaggerate the influence of Europeans in places far from their centers of power. Europeans were often more dependent on Indians than Indians were on them.

Now the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado, this native ground was originally populated by indigenous peoples, became part of the French and Spanish empires, and in 1803 was bought by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. Drawing on archaeology and oral history, as well as documents in English, French, and Spanish, DuVal chronicles the successive migrations of Indians and Europeans to the area from precolonial times through the 1820s. These myriad native groupsーMississippians, Quapaws, Osages, Chickasaws, Caddos, and Cherokeesーand the waves of Europeans all competed with one another for control of the region.

Only in the nineteenth century did outsiders initiate a future in which one people would claim exclusive ownership of the mid-continent. After the War of 1812, these settlers came in numbers large enough to overwhelm the region's inhabitants and reject the early patterns of cross-cultural interdependence. As citizens of the United States, they persuaded the federal government to muster its resources on behalf of their dreams of landholding and citizenship.

With keen insight and broad vision, Kathleen DuVal retells the story of Indian and European contact in a more complex and, ultimately, more satisfactory way.

Indigenous London Native Travelers at the Heart of Empire【電子書籍】[ Coll Thrush ]

An imaginative retelling of London’s history, framed through the experiences of Indigenous travelers who came to the city over the course of more than five centuries

London is famed both as the ancient center of a former empire and as a modern metropolis of bewildering complexity and diversity. In Indigenous London, historian Coll Thrush offers an imaginative vision of the city's past crafted from an almost entirely new perspective: that of Indigenous children, women, and men who traveled there, willingly or otherwise, from territories that became Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, beginning in the sixteenth century. They included captives and diplomats, missionaries and shamans, poets and performers. Some, like the Powhatan noblewoman Pocahontas, are familiar; others, like an Odawa boy held as a prisoner of war, have almost been lost to history. In drawing together their stories and their diverse experiences with a changing urban culture, Thrush also illustrates how London learned to be a global, imperial city and how Indigenous people were central to that process.

One wonders, reading this searing, heartbreaking book, who, indeed, were the savages” (The Washington Post).

The Fetterman Massacre: A riveting account of events leading up to the Battle of the Hundred Slainーthe devastating 1866 conflict at Wyoming’s Ft.
Jodi Eagle knew at an early age that he was going to leave the reservation. Being raised by his grandfather, Jodi had learned the ways of his Sioux heritage, but reservation life was not for him. He had seen too many friends come to a bad end. With help from friends he had made along the way Jodi became a Deputy Sheriff at North Bend, Washington where a killer was kidnapping and killing children.Local parents were terrified for their children. One of the victims was the son of Jodi's friend Earl Campbell. Jodi's own son was a school mate and friend of the murdered child. Jodi tried to help control his own son's grief with stories and customs of his Native American heritage. After eight years fingerprint evidence gathered at one of the crime scenes is matched with a body found near Anchorage, Alaska. This would solve the child murders, but opened a new question; Who killed the killer. The effect of this turmoil on residents of the small western Washington town was great and the wounds deep. His department would find closure to this eight year search with the implication of a one-time deputy. Happy Never After? A doomed flirtation with alternative therapies in a quest to mend a broken heart【電子書籍】[ Dai Lewis ]

Harry had been a happy-go-lucky member of the human race until his girlfriend of two years decided she preferred the company of her own gender. Since then his life had become a downward spiral of misery and self-pity. His best friend Paulie had been as supportive as any male can be, but he too was beginning to drown in Harry's woes, as were the rest of their group. Together with his twin sister Sarah, Paulie was determined to get Harry 'back on the horse' and find a girl. They knew that if that endeavour was to have any chance of success, he would need to recover his happier self. Thus began Harry's quest to trawl through some of the myriad alternative therapies in a desperate attempt to 'pull himself together'. Unfortunately for Harry, 'Murphy's law' was a reality and anything that could go wrong, did, usually in the most unlikely and worst possible ways. The adage 'There's always someone worse off than you' is true and in the world of alternative therapy that person is Harry. Throughout this rather painful journey of self-discovery, his awareness of deepening feelings for Sarah slowly develops. Join Harry through the trials and tribulations of his journey to enlightenment and hopefully love. This is his story.

Covid ? an Alternative Inquiry Putting Health at the Heart of a Green Recovery Strategy【電子書籍】[ David Williams ]

≪This is a very good argument, with impressive detail, clear structure, and vehement commitment.≫

(M. McEldowney, Emeritus Professor of Planning)

This book provides a post-Covid recovery strategy for the UK that is based on all aspects of health, but also addresses the ever-greater threat from global warming. Health and sustainability are interlocked.

More than other European nations, we favour libertarian values over social equity, privatized public services and lower taxes that reduce those services. From fair-minded pragmatism, we have descended into dogma, incompetence and intolerance.

Using the government's 5 guiding principles for a sustainable future, the book suggests how to improve distinct aspects of health:

personal health through more preventive medicine;

environmental health with lower transport and household emissions;

economic health through local (rather than global) production of goods and services;

social health by reducing gross health and wealth inequalities; and

political health through strategic commitment, fair taxes (a bedroom tax just on the poor?) and real devolution to local councils.

We need to think local, act local and act now.

New Membership & Financial Alternatives for the American Synagogue From Traditional Dues to Fair Share to Gifts from the Heart【電子書籍】[ Rabbi Kerry M. Olitzky ]

Open wide your mind and your community to fresh concepts of synagogue financial and spiritual success. "[A] welcome addition.... Replete with examples of synagogues, independent minyanim and spiritual communities that have developed creative and sometimes surprising strategies ... that ameliorate what many observers believe are obstacles to recruiting and engaging Jews into their spiritual communities." from the Foreword by Dr. Ron Wolfson The concept of the "dues-based membership model" in synagogues was once an innovation. Now that model is in decline and sweeping change is required in order to reverse the downward trend in synagogue participation. This groundbreaking book provides synagogue and communal leaders with a useful process and the ingredients necessary to consider important changes in the synagogue, including: Thoughtful new models for membership and synagogue finance Examples from successful synagogues, bolstered by illustrations from the private sector Practical steps for change and implementation With checklists for exploring and adopting alternative models from nationally recognized congregational consultant Debbie Joseph.

Surgical Remodeling in Heart Failure Alternative to Transplantation【

Despite all efforts and success in medical treatment, the incidence of (end-stage) chronic heart failure is increasing. Cardiac transplantation remains the only definite option; however, due to the shortage of donor organs, very few people benefit. Therefore, surgery of end-stage heart failure using conventional techniques has gained new interest after the introduction of the Batista operation. However, a clear surgical identification of the patients to be included in this group is lacking. Left ventricular reduction surgery as well as reduction of the base of the heart using mitral annuloplasty or mitral valve replacement, sparing both papillary muscles, is used in selected patients with satisfying results and good survival. Long-term mechanical support with subsequent surgical remodeling or supporting myoplasty may result in a beneficial alternative to heart transplantation.
