MOUNT EVEREST - The First Expedition of 1921 (Illustrated Edition) Account of the Reconnaissance Expedition to Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury ]

The 1921 British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition set off to explore how it might be possible to get to the vicinity of Mount Everest, to reconnoiter possible routes for ascending the mountain, and ? if possible ? make the first ascent of the highest mountain in the world. A feasible route was discovered from the east up the Kharta Glacier and then crossing the Lhakpa La pass north east of Everest. It was then necessary to descend to the East Rongbuk Glacier before climbing again to Everest's North Col. Initially the expedition explored from the north and discovered the main Rongbuk Glacier, only to find that it seemed to provide no likely routes to the summit. However, at the time it was not realised that the East Rongbuk glacier actually flowed into the Rongbuk glacier ? it was thought it descended away to the east. As a reconnaissance the expedition was a success because it determined that a good route might be to approach the East Rongbuk glacier via the Rongbuk glacier, and then follow the North Col route to the summit.

Mountain Temples and Temple Mountains Architecture, Religion, and Nature in the Central Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Nachiket Chanchani ]

From approximately the third century BCE through the thirteenth century CE, the remote mountainous landscape around the glacial sources of the Ganga (Ganges) River in the Central Himalayas in northern India was transformed into a region encoded with deep meaning, one approached by millions of Hindus as a primary locus of pilgrimage.

Nachiket Chanchani’s innovative study explores scores of stone edifices and steles that were erected in this landscape. Through their forms, locations, interactions with the natural environment, and sociopolitical context, these lithic ensembles evoked legendary worlds, embedded historical memories in the topography, changed the mountain range’s appearance, and shifted its semiotic effect. Mountain Temples and Temple Mountains also alters our understanding of the transmission of architectural knowledge and provides new evidence of how an enduring idea of India emerged in the subcontinent.

Art History Publication Initiative. Addressing the Climate Crisis in the Indian Himalayas Can Traditional Ecological Knowledge Help?【

This book focuses on the traditional ecological knowledge in addressing the current climate crisis in the Indian Himalayas. Local or indigenous people in the Himalayas, through their low-carbon producing lifestyles, contribute very little to the climate crisis. However, at the same time, they bear the brunt of this crisis way more than many others. It is important to learn about their traditional ways of life and the knowledge that they hold regarding ecology and environment. Traditional ecological knowledge and associated belief systems are given increasing attention across the globe in recent times toward addressing some of the grave environmental concerns. Climate change is one such concern. The rising consideration of concepts such as ethnoecology and ethnobotany signifies the scientific, socio-cultural and economic potential of the traditional ecological knowledge systems. It is indisputable that these knowledge systems have the ability to provide important insights towards tackling many present-day environmental distresses including several climate change challenges. In this book, the authors concentrate on such traditional ecological knowledge systems in the Indian Himalayan region and try to figure out their significance in relation to the modern science. Overall, the authors attempt to write a book where the relevance of traditional ecological knowledge systems could be addressed and communicated to a larger audienceーboth academic scientific and non-academic.

Love and Honor in the Himalayas Coming To Know Another Culture【電子書籍】[ Ernestine McHugh ]

American anthropologist Ernestine McHugh arrived in the foothills of the Annapurna mountains in Nepal, and, surrounded by terraced fields, rushing streams, and rocky paths, she began one of several sojourns among the Gurung people whose ramro hawa-pani (good wind and water) not only describes the enduring bounty of their land but also reflects the climate of goodwill they seek to sustain in their community. It was in their steep Himalayan villages that McHugh came to know another culture, witnessing and learning the Buddhist appreciation for equanimity in moments of precious joy and inevitable sorrow.

Love and Honor in the Himalayas is McHugh's gripping ethnographic memoir based on research among the Gurungs conducted over a span of fourteen years. As she chronicles the events of her fieldwork, she also tells a story that admits feeling and involvement, writing of the people who housed her in the terms in which they cast their relationship with her, that of family. Welcomed to call her host Ama and become a daughter in the household, McHugh engaged in a strong network of kin and friendship. She intimately describes, with a sure sense of comedy and pathos, the family's diverse experiences of life and loss, self and personhood, hope, knowledge, and affection. In mundane as well as dramatic rituals, the Gurungs ever emphasize the importance of love and honor in everyday life, regardless of circumstances, in all human relationships. Such was the lesson learned by McHugh, who arrived a young woman facing her own hardships and came to understandーand experienceーthe power of their ways of being.

While it attends to a particular place and its inhabitants, Love and Honor in the Himalayas is, above all, about human possibility, about what people make of their lives. Through the compelling force of her narrative, McHugh lets her emotionally open fieldwork reveal insight into the privilege of joining a community and a culture. It is an invitation to sustain grace and kindness in the face of adversity, cultivate harmony and mutual support, and cherish life fully.

Mobile Lifeworlds An Ethnography of Tourism and Pilgrimage in the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Christopher A. Howard ]

Mobile Lifeworlds illustrates how the imaginaries and ideals of Western travellers, especially those of untouched nature and spiritual enlightenment, are consistent with media representations of the Himalayan region, romanticism and modernity at large. Blending tourism and pilgrimage, travel across Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Northern India is often inspired and oriented by a search for authenticity, adventure and Otherness. Such valued ideals are shown, however, to be contested by the very forces and configurations that enable global mobility.

The role ubiquitous media and mobile technologies now play in framing travel experiences are explored, revealing a situation in which actors are neither here nor there, but increasingly are ‘inter-placed’ across planetary landscapes. Beyond institutionalised religious contexts and the visiting of sacred sites, the author shows how a secular religiosity manifests in practical, bodily encounters with foreign environments. This book is unique in that it draws on a dynamic and innovative set of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, especially phenomenology, the mobilities paradigm and philosophical anthropology. The volume breaks fresh ground in pilgrimage, tourism and travel studies by unfolding the complex relationships between the virtual, imaginary and corporeal dynamics of contemporary mobile lifeworlds.

The Search for the Pink-Headed Duck A Journey into the Himalayas and Down the Brahmaputra【電子書籍】[ Rory Nugent ]

Fifty-two years after the pink-headed duck was last seen in the wild, Rory Nugent set off for India in search of this exceptionally rare bird. In Calcutta he prowled the fowl market, where a few of the ducks used to appear during the Raj. Traveling on to Delhi, he was befriended by a Cambridge-educated smuggler, and he learned of remote regions to the north where the duck might be found. In Sikkim, following the trail of a Yeti, he became lost in the Valley of Bliss and nearly imprisoned inside a forest of rhododendrons, each the size of a ranch house. Making his way to Assam, he bought a 13-foot skiff and paddled the Brahmaputra River from Burma to Bangladesh, with stops on an island, considered to be Kali’s left breast, and at a Tantrist temple, where he stumbled on a grisly ritual in a graveyard. In a secluded marsh along the river he may have spotted the world’s rarest duck.

Water Resources in the Himalayas Harvesting, Tradition and Change【電子書籍】[ Piyoosh Rautela ]

Written to highlight the water related problems of the Himalayan region the book is organised in such a manner that the reader is exposed to the ground-realities in the Himalaya through a series of case studies, apart from the theoretical aspects of the water related problems. Though pertinent to entire Himalaya the book focuses upon the hills of Uttar Pradesh (Uttarakhand). After dealing with the water harvesting traditions on a broad framework the book concentrates upon traditional resource management systems in Himalaya and also the disruption of the same with changing times. In the various case studies the problems that the people are facing due to the disruption of traditional resource management practices are discussed. As females shoulder most of the burden of resource management in Himalaya this book graphically narrates the tale of their enhancing workload in the rural Himalaya. With practical experiences from grassroots level author tries to assert the efficacy of small endeavors meant for conserving water. Some strategies that revolve round rain water harvesting and revival of traditional water harvesting practices are discussed in the end and these are envisaged to make rural Himalayan communities self reliant in their water related needs.

When he discovers that “the foreigner” is speaking to him in Hindi, he decides to do all he can to figure out why the Hindi voice has chosen him. Jerry believes he's come a long way toward and understanding why the voice is in his head, until he experiences his first "glimpse". He realizes he's in way over his head and seeks the counsel of his colleague, the free-spirited “queen of metaphysics”, Dr. Miranda Madras. Jerry tells Dr. Madras that his only wish is to spend time face-to-face with Drakali-anu, also known as The Patron Saint of the Himalayas.

With her guidance, support and wisdom, Jerry begins to walk the path that will lead him to the Hindi voice of wisdom inside him. However, before he can spend quality time with his inner-Hindi, he must take several journeys - around the globe, into the spirit world and deep into the mountain cave of his own soul. As he journeys, he learns myriad lessons about his personal history, his spiritual beliefs and how and why he walks in the world.

Lies are dispelled, the illusion of control is released and healing is found within the pages of The Patron Saint of the Himalayas.

Enjoy the ride!

In the coarse of my summer residence at Simla daring the last ten, and more particularly the last five, years, I hare availed myself of such opportunities as have offered to collect and examine the materials for a list of the local ferns. The limits of my field of work have necessarily been determined by considerations of ready accessibility, and do not extend much below 4,500 feet on the one hand, nor above 10,500 feet on the other. I have, indeed, sometimes visited lower slopes and valleys both in the neighbourhood of Simla and in Chamba and the Jumna valley, but my examination of these lower levels has been too imperfect to admit of my attempting anything like so complete a list of their fern flora as for the range of elevations between the limits above specified. To the ferns occurring between 4,500 and 10,500 feet, therefore, this list is restricted.

This book analyzes the issues associated with climate change in the Himalayas. The purpose of choosing the Himalayas as a focus is because it is a particularly fragile mountain system, highly sensitive to climate change impacts, and it contains one of the largest human populations affected by climate change. The book provides extensive data and information regarding the climate history of the Himalayas, and the current effects of climate change on Himalayan weather systems, and on human and animal populations in the region.

The book begins with an overview of global climate change with discussions of data trends and international initiatives, then segues into a history of climate changes and weather trends in the Himalayas. Weather systems of the Himalayas, both past and current, are analyzed and detailed through climate models, seasonal observations of weather fronts, and overviews of various climate scenarios. The book then discusses climate change impacts and signat

ures specific to the Central Himalayan region, where the largest effects of impacts are observed. Readers will discover analysis presented on water resources, meteorological changes, biodiversity, agriculture and human health along with perspectives of management and policy. This book will appeal to researchers studying climate science, climatology, environmental scientists and policymakers.
