Awakenings The Story of the Kate Chopin Revival【

One of the most often repeated anecdotes about the direction of literary studies over the past three decades concerns a graduate student who complained of reading Kate Chopin's The Awakening in three classes and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick in none. But Chopin has not always been featured in the literary curriculum. Though she achieved national success in her lifetime (1850--1904) as a writer of Louisiana "local color" fiction, after her death her work fell into obscurity until 1969, when Norwegian literary scholar Per Seyersted published The Complete Works of Kate Chopin and sparked a remarkable American literary revival. Chopin soon became a major presence in the canon, and today every college textbook surveying American literature contains a Chopin short story, her novel The Awakening, or an excerpt from it.
In this unique work, twelve prominent Chopin scholars reflect on their parts in the Kate Chopin revival and its impact on their careers. A generation ago, against powerful odds, many of them staked their reputations on the belief -- now fully validated -- that Chopin is one of America's essential writers. These scholars energetically sponsored Chopin's works in the 1970s and 1980s and encouraged reading, studying, and teaching Chopin. They wrote books and articles about her, gave talks about her, offered interviews to newspapers and magazines, taught her works in their classes, and urged their colleagues to do the same, helping to build a network of teachers, students, editors, journalists, librarians, and others who continue to promote Chopin's work.
Throughout, these essays stress several elements vital to the revival's success. Timing proved critical, as the rise of the women's movement and the emergence of new sexual norms in the 1960s helped set an ideal context for Chopin in the United States and abroad in the 1970s and 1980s. Seyersted's biography of Chopin and his accurate texts of her entire oeuvre allowed scholars to quickly publish their analyses of her work. Popular media -- including Redbook, New York Times, and PBS -- took notice of Chopin and advanced her work outside the scholarly realm. But in the final analysis, as the contributors point out, Kate Chopin's irresistible writing itself made her revival possible.
Highly personal, at times amusing, and always thought provoking, these revealing recollections and new critical insights offer a fascinating firsthand account of a decisive moment in American literary history.

Confessions of an English Opium-Eater Autobiographical Account of a Drug Addict【電子書籍】[ Thomas De Quincey ]

Confessions of an English Opium-Eater is an autobiographical account written by Thomas De Quincey, about his laudanum addiction and its effect on his life. De Quincey's account was organized into two parts. Part I contains Preliminary Confessions, and it is devoted to the author's childhood and youth, and concentrated upon the emotional and psychological factors that underlay the later opium experiences ? especially the period in his late teens that De Quincey spent as a homeless runaway in Oxford Street in London in 1802 and 1803. Part II is split into several sections, the main two being The Pleasures of Opium and The Pains of Opium. The Pleasures of Opium discusses the early and largely positive phase of the author's experience with the drug, from 1804 until 1812. The Pains of Opium recounts the extreme of the author's opium experience (up to that time), with insomnia, nightmares, frightening visions, and difficult physical symptoms.

The Collected Writings of Franz Liszt F. Chopin【電子書籍】[ Janita R. Hall-Swadley ]

Shortly after Chopin's death in 1849, Franz Liszt wrote the first full-length biography of his fellow composer. As one of Chopin's friends, Liszt created a unique biography that allows the reader to experience the world of Chopin through the memories of one of his most adamant supporters. This translation is the starting volume of Janita Hall-Swadley's The Collected Writings of Franz Liszt, the very first production of Liszt's entire literary collection in English. In addition to the English translation of Liszt's Gesammelte Schriften, collected and edited by Lina Ramann and published in Germany in 1880/83, each volume contains a Foreword written by a scholar and expert on Liszt and that volume's topic. New research and perspectives in the field of Liszt studies are presented in the introduction to each book in the series, and the translations themselves are enhanced with annotations in accordance with modern standards of musicological research.

In Volume 1, Liszt provides insight into Chopin's early childhood and musical development, the cultural traditions and customs that inspired the polonaises and mazurkas, and the final days and hours of the composer before he died. Liszt also offers the reader a psychological view of the composer that had not been seriously undertaken by anyone prior to Liszt. Although Liszt offered what some scholars regard as perhaps an idealized image of the composer, readers will enjoy the personal anecdotes and memories that only one close to the late composer could have known. Liszt even takes on the sensitive topic of the love affair between Chopin and the great French woman writer George Sand, much to the displeasure of the former's family.

The Collected Writings of Franz Liszt: Volume 1: F. Chopin includes a thorough discussion of Liszt as an author and the tainted past that surrounded his writings beginning in the 1930s. The much neglected topic of Liszt’s relationship with his publishers is explored, and the critical questionnaires that Liszt had sent to Chopin’s sister in preparation for writing the biography are included. Finally, a discussion of the professional and personal relationship between Chopin and Liszt is provided, making this volume a valuable addition to the study of both composers.

Old Oraibi A Study of the Hopi Indians of Third Mesa【電子書籍】[ Mischa Titiev ]

In this classic work, renowned anthropologist Mischa Titiev presents his research on the Hopi Native-Americans. Based on fieldwork he did in period 1932 -1940, he describes many aspects of the Hopi culture, from land use and kinship to ceremonies and games. Illustrated

THE HOPI Indians, a tribe speaking a Shoshonean language, are located in the Little Colorado drainage, about 70 miles north of Winslow, Arizona. They are the westernmost representatives of the Pueblo pattern of culture, and archaeological evidence has indicated that they are probably the direct descendants of some of the earliest tribes which settled in the Southwest. Owing in part to geographical isolation, and in part to their stubborn resistance to outside influences, the Hopi have managed to preserve so great a part of their aboriginal culture that they afford a particularly attractive subject for ethnological investigation.

Bitter Water Din? Oral Histories of the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute【

Many know that the removal and relocation of Indigenous peoples from traditional lands is a part of the United States’ colonial past, but few know thatーin an expansive corner of northeastern Arizonaーthe saga continues. The 1974 Settlement Act officially divided a reservation established almost a century earlier between the Din? (Navajo) and the Hopi, and legally granted the contested land to the Hopi. To date, the U.S. government has relocated between 12,000 and 14,000 Din? from Hopi Partitioned Lands, and the Din?ーboth there and elsewhereーcontinue to live with the legacy of this relocation.

Bitter Water presents the narratives of four Din? women who have resisted removal but who have watched as their communities and lifeways have changed dramatically. The book, based on 25 hours of filmed personal testimony, features the women’s candid discussions of their efforts to carry on a traditional way of life in a contemporary world that includes relocation and partitioned lands; encroaching Western values and culture; and devastating mineral extraction and development in the Black Mesa region of Arizona. Though their accounts are framed by insightful writings by both Benally and Din? historian Jennifer Nez Denetdale, Benally lets the stories of the four women elders speak for themselves.

Scholars, media, and other outsiders have all told their versions of this story, but this is the first book that centers on the stories of women who have lived itーin their own words in Navajo as well as the English translation. The result is a living history of a contested cultural landscape and the unique worldview of women determined to maintain their traditions and lifeways, which are so intimately connected to the land. This book is more than a collection of stories, poetry, and prose. It is a chronicle of resistance as spoken from the hearts of those who have lived it.

Native American Tribes: The History and Culture of the Hopi (Pueblo)【電子書籍】[ Charles River Editors ]

*Includes pictures of important people and places. *Explains the origins, history, religion, and social structure of the Hopi*Includes a Bibliography for further reading.*Includes a Table of Contents.“Before you take any decision, consider its effect on the next seven generations.” Hopi proverbFrom the “Trail of Tears” to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture. In Charles River Editors Native American Tribes series, readers can get caught up to speed on the history and culture of North Americas most famous native tribes in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. When European settlers and later American settlers came into contact with Native American tribes on the continent, they were frequently unable to differentiate between the subcultures within individual tribes, leading to all kinds of misunderstandings. As a result, one of the most misunderstood tribes is the Hopi, who were just one of the tribes that the Spanish categorized as Pueblo. Thus, while most Americans have heard of the Pueblo and Navajo, many remain unfamiliar with distinctions within the tribes. The Pueblo fascinated those who came across their settlements, especially those located in desert regions and the sides of cliffs that involved the use of adobe mud, stone, carving homes out of cliffs. One such settlement, Oraibi, was created by the Hopi around 1100 A.D. and remains one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America. The Spanish were so intrigued by the structure of the communities that they gave the natives the name Pueblo, a term they used to measure certain sizes for their own settlements.Today the names Hopi and Zuni are virtually synonymous with the Ancient Puebloan culture. Occupying a large portion of what is essentially the Navajo Nation Reservation, spanning Navajo and Coconino Counties on the edge of the Painted Desert, the Hopi (Ho-pee, a shortened form of Hopituh-Shi-nu-mu, meaning "peaceful people") are the westernmost of the Pueblo Native American groups. Though the Hopi claim no blood ties to the Navajo, and their cohabitational arrangement remains a source of continual conflict among the tribes, the federal government allotted the reservation to both ethnic groups. And while the Navajo make no ancestral claims to the ancient Puebloan culture, both the Hopi and Zuni (who live primarily in the Pueblo of Zuni on the Zuni River in western New Mexico) claim ancestral ties to many of the ancient Puebloan sites and share many of the same ancient traditions.Perhaps most importantly, the location of the Hopi, and all the contact between them and European settlers, have helped create a thorough understanding of their culture. Explorers and anthropologists who came to Oraibi also learned enough about the culture there to come to understand the links between the Hopi and other tribes. While they ultimately suffered a similar fate to other tribes and were settled onto a reservation, there are still over 10,000 Hopi today, and their history continues to fascinate researchers.Native American Tribes: The History and Culture of the Hopi (Pueblo) comprehensively covers the culture and history of the famous tribe, profiling their origins, their way of life, their famous leaders, and their lasting legacy. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Hopi like you never have before, in no time at all.

Native American Indian culture is known for its rich oral traditions. In many cases there were no written languages to document their histories. The tribes relied on verbal communication to share their customs, history, rituals and legends. The tribal elders used vibrant tales to pass information to the younger generations. These stories were not only related to tribal history but were meant to entertain as well as educate, while preserving their tribal culture.

The Hopi Indians culture was and is rich with these stories. With a past stretching back thousands of years, they are one of the oldest living cultures in documented history. The tribe’s teachings relate stories of a great flood and other events dating to ancient times. The Hopi trace their ancestry back to the Ancient Puebloan and Basketmaker cultures. They were responsible for many stone structures and artifacts of the Grand Canyon and across the Southwest.

Included in this book, which is one of two volumes is a huge collection of the stories of the Hopi Indians. Without books and without writing the Hopi have an extensive literature. These stories have been collected with the main purpose of preserving the ancient stories of Native American life. Over the years, many collectors have recorded several versions of some of these tales. So keep in mind there is some variation to what has been collected. You are invited to enjoy the culture and as in true Native tradition, share these stories with the next generation.
