A Glossary of Old Syrian Volume 1: ? ?
|

A Glossary of Old Syrian: ? ? ? is the first of two volumes aimed at the completion of a lexicographical index of the Old Syrian linguistical continuum. This glossary gives a picture, or map, of the Old Syrian lexicon as it can be extracted and reconstructed from the available sources, from the (Old Akkadian-)Eblatic through the Old and Middle Babylonian corpora.

Old Syrian can be defined most appropriately as a diachronically conservative, geographically pluricentric, and pragmatically multilayered linguistic cluster. Therefore, the present work pays special attention to the distribution of lexical data along diatopic and diastratic criteria. In view of the enormous amount of material and the dispersion of the data, this glossary focuses on the most representative textual corpora of the Old Syrian linguistic landscape. The bibliographical references are kept deliberately succinct and as a rule, restricted to the classic works that may be easily found in every Assyriological or Semitic library, public or private, and that will redirect the users to their sources. Since the Old Syrian lexicography remains uncertain, the leading interpretative opinions are included alongside the most relevant comparative Semitic material.

A Glossary of Old Syrian offers a clear picture of the current state of this field and is intended to serve as a reference work in support of future study.

The Elements of San Joaquin Poems【電子書籍】[ Gary Soto ]

Expanded from the award-winning Chicano poet’s 1977 original, this poetry collection explores the hardships and joys of migrant workers in California.

A timely new edition of a pioneering work in Latino literature, National Book Award?nominee Gary Soto’s first collection (originally published in 1977) draws on California’s fertile San Joaquin Valley, the people, the place, and the hard agricultural work done there by immigrants. In these poems, joy and anger, violence and hope are placed in both the metaphorical and very real circumstances of the Valley. Rooted in personal experiencesーof the poet as a young man, his friends, family, and neighborsーthe poems are spare but expansive, with Soto’s voice as important as ever. This welcome new edition has been expanded with a crucial selection of complementary poems (some previously unpublished) and a new introduction by the author.

Praise for The Elements of San Joaquin

“A response to the charged, ideologically defiant voices from the seventies, The Elements of San Joaquin forever changed the course of Latino literature, redirecting us toward the mundane and ephemeral. The poet’s only commitment, Gary Soto seemed to suggest, is to life itself. His teacher and role model was Philip Levine, who encouraged him to see his own neighborhood, indeed his own backyard, as a kingdom. The result was a type of poetry that weathered inclement times in ways that scores of other instant “hits” couldn’t. It was new yet as old as the Bible and it still is. The word “classic” is overused these days. Not in this case.” ーIlan Stavans, Lewis-Sebring Professor in the Humanities, Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College, and general editor of The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature

“In the original The Elements of San Joaquin, Gary Soto defined the Chicano character as an underrepresented part of the American whole, the identity that would serve as foundation for my life’s work. My parents and grandparents had crossed borders, but Soto rooted me, us, hereーin the daily poverty of mejicano vecindadesーon all those rural “Braly Streets” of Fresno, Brawley, and Salinas. His elements of sun, wind, stars, and field shadowed my own destiny to bring justice there, to the people of the hoe and harvest.” ーJos? Padilla, Executive Director of California Rural Legal Assistance

The Robin Hood of El Dorado: The Saga of Joaquin Murrieta, Famous Outlaw of California's Age of Gold【電子書籍】[ Walter Noble Burns ]

|

First published in 1932 and never reprinted since, this historical drama re-creates the life and adventures of Joaquin Murrieta, a Hispanic social rebel in California during the tumultuous Gold Rush. Published during the Great Depression, at a time of mass deportations of Hispanos to Mexico, this sympathetic portrait of Murrieta and Mexican Americans was a unique voice of social protest. The author romanticizes the pastoral society of Mexican California into which Murrieta was born and introduces the protagonist as a quiet, honest, unpretentious, and reserved resident of Saw Mill Flat, California. But the rape and murder of his wife, Rosita, by racist Anglo miners unleashes his vengeful rage. Picking up his pistols, Murrieta tracks and kills Rosita's murderers and defends Hispanos against violence and dispossession by rampaging gold rush miners. Richard Griswold del Castillo discusses the significance of Murrieta to twentieth-century Mexican Americans and Chicanos and of Burns's history to contemporary understanding of the mysterious social bandit.

Of Fire and Rain【電子書籍】[ Joaquin Zihuatanejo ]
|

The new book by Joaquin Zihuatanejo and natasha carrizosa, of fire and rain, has been called a testimony of life and love that spans form the ghettos of the West Indies to the barrio of the Lower East Side. It is a series of powerful poems that will leave readers stunned and yearning for more. There is an honesty in these poems, a richness of voice that is without question that of a poet. In his solo collection, Barrio Songs, Joaquin attempts to capture the struggle of his people, the lost barrio boys of his youth, but in, of fire and rain, both he and carrizosa attempt to capture the struggle of many different kinds of people. The streets of Brooklyn, the deserts of Sudan and the people that inhabit them can be found in these poems. But perhaps the most gripping thing that these poems accomplish is how eloquently they give voice to the voiceless. Perhaps the goal of poetry is to tell an awful truth in a beautiful way. These poems do this. Jimmy Santiago Baca, author of Immigrants in our Own Land and a Place to Stand had this to say about the collection, "The poetry is lush and green and rich. One turns from inside the heart's thorny and parched landscape and encounters the poetic word to redeem the salt in the wound, the long-for kiss, to cool the burning-- these poems do just this." Naomi Shihab Nye, author of Yellow Glove and Different Ways to Pray commented on the collection, "Natasha & Joaquin write passionate, potent poemsーtheir voices unafraid of questioning and reckoningーhere's a cheer for their full hearts, vivid hopes & soulful journeysー" Rudolfo Anaya, who has been called by critics the grandfather of Chicano literature, and who wrote the masterpieces Bless Me, Ultima, and Alburquerque had this to say about Joaquin, natasha, and this daring collection of poems: "Joaqu?n and Natasha, your poems are like a satisfying summer rain replenishing a thirsty landscape. They are engrossing, thoughtful, deep with knowledge, and rich in poetic rhythms. As I read I felt in the presence of two old souls penning the red and black ink, awakening to life the wisdom of our ancestors. I rejoiced, knowing that you two represent a new generation of multicultural poets, willing to reveal your intimate lives, your joys and tragedies, and also sharing a profound empathy with the lives of los de abajo, those who have suffered the iniquities of history. I felt freedom and justice ringing in your poems, and I trust many readers will feel the same sense of liberation. You write from a wealth of experience, touching the soul as few can do, creating the emotional worlds to which all poetry aspires. At times the poems are whirlwinds of protest, reminding me of Neruda and the Nuyorican poet Miguel Algarin, poets who marry the essence of poetry with social commitment. So, Joaqu?n and Natasha, you join the ranks of those who tell us that poetry can be a cleansing wind blowing across the land, a wind to cool the sweat of workers and bend tyrants into submission. Your poems renew the energy of the soul, and as they go out into the world they will renew society."

The San Joaquin Kit Fox Biology, Ecology, and Conservation of an Endangered Species【電子書籍】[ Brian L. Cypher ]

The San Joaquin Kit Fox introduces readers to a small wild canid that occupies a prominent position in ongoing conservation battles. Native to central California, where land is in high demand for development purposes, the San Joaquin kit fox population has been significantly impacted by profound habitat loss. The species remains on the original US endangered species list issued in 1966, with dim prospects for recovery.

To guide the work of researchers and conservationists, Brian L. Cypher synthesizes the biological and ecological data collected to date on this species and documents both historical and contemporary efforts to protect it. He details the species' evolutionary and taxonomic history, distribution and habitat preferences, mortality sources, and more. In doing so, he draws out the ever-changing relationship between San Joaquin kit foxes, people, and land use.

Richly illustrated and accessible, The San Joaquin Kit Fox is a necessary reference for students, researchers, and conservationists looking to better understand this charismatic creature and others like it in order to better secure the futures of these species.

Famous American historian Herbert Howe Bancroft apparently believed in the authenticity of Ridge's accounts and would use Ridge's book as a primary source in his history of California.

In his book, Ridge---himself a California Gold Rush miner---traces the harrowing life of Joaquin Murrieta (1829 ?1853), the Robin Hood of El Dorado, who was a Sonoran forty-niner, vaquero and gold miner who became a famous outlaw in California during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s.

The life story details Murrieta's evolution from a young Mexican migrant into a legendary outlaw and insurrectionist. Murieta as a young man arrives in California “fired with enthusiastic admiration of the American character.” However, upon obtaining success in the gold fields of California, his American dream collapses when white men jump his claim, assault his wife, requisition his farm, kill his brother, and falsely accuse and publicly whip him.

After making attempts to live an honest life as American, in the face of anti-Mexican discrimination, Murieta becomes outlaw and eventually an insurrectionist who plotted and nearly set into motion a plan to take over California with forces from Mexico.

Due to the actions of Murieta's gang, in many agricultural districts both mining and agricultural pursuits were in a measure suspended. Travel became absolutely dangerous in the most open highways, and communication had well-nigh ceased between important points. American owners of ranches were impoverished in a night by having every hoof of their stock driven into the mountains, and afterward into Sonora.

In describing one daring escape from vigilantes up a mountain trail, Ridge writes:

"Knowing that his only chance lay in the swiftness of his sure-footed animal, he drew his keenly polished bowie knife in proud defiance of the danger, and waved it in scorn as he rode on. It was perfectly sublime to see such superhuman daring and recklessness. At each report, which came fast and thick, he kissed the flashing blade and waved it at his foes."

The condition of things soon became intolerable, and a petition, numerously signed, was presented to the Legislature praying that body to authorize Captain Harry Love to organize a company of Mounted Rangers, in order to capture, or drive out of the country, or exterminate the gang of bandits. ---Thus was the scene set in Ridge's final chapter for a grand finale showdown between the outlaw gang and the newly minted California Rangers.

Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta Celebrated California Bandit【電子書籍】[ John Rollin Ridge ]
|

In 1854, a Cherokee Indian called Yellow Bird (better known as John Rollin Ridge) launched in this book the myth of Joaquin Murieta, based on the California criminal career of a 19th century Mexican bandit. Today this folk hero has been written into state histories, sensationalized in books, poems, and articles throughout America, Spain, France, Chile, and Mexico, and made into a motion picture.

The Ridge account is here reproduced from the only known copy of the first edition, owned by Thomas W. Streeter, of Morristown, New Jersey. According to it, the passionate, wronged Murieta organized an outlaw company numbering over 2,000 men, who for two years terrorized gold-rush Californians by kidnapping, bank robberies, cattle thefts, and murders. So bloodthirsty as to be considered five men, Joaquin was aided by several hardy subordinates, including the sadistic cutthroat, "Three-Fingered Jack." Finally, the state legislature authorized organization of the Mounted Rangers to capture the outlaws. The drama is fittingly climaxed by the ensuing chase, "good, gory" battle, and the shocking fate of the badmen.

A Glossary of Old Syrian: l?z is the second of two volumes that aim to map the lexicon of Old Syrian as it can be extracted and reconstructed from the (Old Akkadian) Eblaite through the Old and Middle Babylonian corpora.

Referring to a continuum of dialects spoken in the Syrian-Levantine and Syrian-Mesopotamian regions through the third and second millennia BCE, “Old Syrian” is a diachronically conservative, geographically pluricentric, and pragmatically multilayered linguistic cluster. As such, the Glossary pays special attention to the distribution of lexical data along diachronic, diatopic, and diastratic criteria. Given the extent and widely dispersed nature of this data, entries are supported by the most representative corpora of the Old Syrian linguistic landscape. Each entry is headed by an etymon, a kind of prelinguistic consonantal skeleton, and further information about different lexemes, their roots, and their derivations is provided in subentries. As the lexicography of Old Syrian remains uncertain, the Glossary includes leading interpretative opinions alongside the most relevant Semitic material to corroborate the lexical choices it adopts*.* Bibliographical references are succinct and restricted, as a rule, to texts easily found in any Assyriological or Semitic library.

Intended as a reference work in support of future study, A Glossary of Old Syrian offers a clear view of the state of the field.

Joaquin Phoenix is one of the most fascinating and controversial actors working in film, and ever since his Oscar-nominated performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. Yet in October 2008, during a press interview to promote the critically acclaimed Two Lovers, Phoenix made a shock announcement that he was to retire from acting and reinvent himself as a bona-fide hip-hop musician. The subsequent 'documentary', I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix, made by his brother in law Casey. In this in-depth biography, Martin Howden traces the rise of this unique actor, from his early career as a child-star, through to his Oscar nominated performance in Walk the Line, and subsequent "reinvention". Drawing upon numerous interviews and press reports, this biography documents Phoenix's life following the release of I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix and examines whether his new career is indeed a genuine reinvention or simply a hoax.

A tale built around truth, well seasoned with fiction, in the era from 1929 to 2004, about a man named Jack who was born on a small ranch in the desert canyon country of the southwest to Anglo parents with the light of their dream on the horizon in their eyes. He became orphaned at the age of nine months with no public record of his birth. He was discovered in the desert and raised by illegal Mexicans, (wetbacks, a loose term of the era), and thus was renamed Joaquin. It is about the people that he encounters, both directly and indirectly, which shape the conditions of his life from his birth through his days as a Vaquero out on the wagon (a base camp used by cowboys to facilitate open range grazing) in the Great Basin, until he reaches an age where he and his buckaroo skills are no longer considered of any value. Unbeknownst to him, he goes full circle back to his beginning in the canyons of the desert of the southwest and there meets his mysterious end. It is a tale of love, life, death, and superstition.

Charity's Sister The Story of Sister Mary Joaquin Bitler, SC【電子書籍】[ Mari Grana ]
|

In 1951, when Sister of Charity Mary Joaquin Bitler was called to Santa Fe, New Mexico to be the Supervisor of Nursing at Santa Fe's antiquated St. Vincent Hospital, she remarked that the 1910 Catholic hospital was surviving on "nerve and hope." Later, as Administrator (1960 - 1976), she was lauded locally and nationally for her achievements in health care and for bringing that care to the poor of New Mexico. Considered by many a brilliant businesswoman, she turned St. Vincent's into a state-of-the art facility in its time, managed by a community corporation. Sister Mary Joaquin's story tells of a very complex personality. A tough hospital administrator, she had many admirers as well as some enemies; a devout nun, she drew strength from her religion to open her heart to the poor and the sick, while she herself suffered a chronic and debilitating illness. In 1977, after succeeding in her goal to build Santa Fe a new and greatly expanded community-owned hospital, Sister Joaquin retreated to a life of contemplation and prayer in a little hermitage in central Mexico. Appalled by the poverty and sickness around her-the distended stomachs of hungry children, the heart-breaking number of infant deaths from dysentery and other parasitic diseases-she opened a small clinic in her hermitage to treat the villagers, most of whom had never seen a doctor or had any access to health care. Her last years were spent living as a hermit in New Mexico's Christ in the Desert Benedictine Monastery until her death in 2003. "Charity's Sister" is a book that will appeal to students of medicine, Southwest history and women's history, as well as being a testament to one woman's profound strength of will, to one who always sought divine guidance in dealing with adversities in her own life and in the many lives she touched.

This was the old man's speech:ー
"That won't go down. Too much book larnin."
But the new Judge, or rather the old, bald-headed, dumpy, dirty-faced little fellow, with the dirty shirt and dirty duck breeches, was not a bad man at all. The "boys" had too much hard sense to set up anything but a sort of wooden king to rule over them in this little isolated remote camp and colony of the Sierras.
