Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies: Confederate Generals Accounts of the Battle of Chancellorsville【電子書籍】[ Robert E. Lee, JEB Stuart, & Jubal Early ]

In early May 1863, the Army of the Potomac was at the height of its power as it bore down on Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia near Fredericksburg, where the Confederates had defeated the Union the previous December. Although heavily outnumbered, Lees army persevered and went on to win the Battle of Chancellorsville, perhaps its most impressive tactical victory. The battle is famous for Lees decision to split his army in the face of the Army of the Potomac, despite being outnumbered, having Stonewall Jackson march around the Unions right flank and surprising the XI Corps with an attack. The bold tactics eventually resulted in General Hooker ordering his armys retreat, paving the way for Lee to invade Pennsylvania. However, Lee would lose his right arm at the Battle. Stonewall Jackson had become famous for his role at the First Battle of Bull Run, the 1862 Valley Campaign, and Second Manassas, but the flank attack at Chancellorsville may have been his greatest feat in the Civil War. But Jackson was struck down the very night of the attack, mortally wounded by his own men during the night of May 2, 1863 after conducting scouting ahead of his own lines. Jackson would die 8 days later. Before all of the generals relived the Battle of Chancellorsville in their memoirs, they wrote official accounts of the campaign to their superiors, and those accounts were preserved in the Official Records. This collection of Confederate generals accounts of the battle includes the accounts of Lee, JEB Stuart, Jubal Early, Porter Alexander, Lafayette McLaws and Cadmus Wilcox. It is specially formatted with a Table of Contents for each generals account, maps and pictures of the generals who fought in it.

The Heritage of The South: A History of the Introduction of Slavery【電子書籍】[ Jubal Anderson Early ]

The struggle for independence made by the Southern States of the American Union, grew out of questions of self government arising mainly in regard to the institution of African slavery as it existed in those states, and as that institution was the occasion for the development of the difficulties which led immediately to the struggle, the conduct of the states lately forming the Southern Confederacy has been misunderstood, therefore, misrepresented, with the effect of casting upon them not only the odium of originating the war but even for the existence and continuance of slavery itself. Much misapprehension has existed in the minds even of intelligent foreigners upon these subjects and it is therefore not inappropriate to take a retrospective view of the history of slavery in general and especially of the slave trade and of slavery in the United States, as well as of the questions which led to the secession of the Southern States and to the war consequent thereon. It is said that the Portuguese began the traffic in slaves on the coast of Africa in the 15th century, and that at the beginning of the 16th century negro slaves had become quite common in Portugal. After the discovery of America, the Spaniards made slaves of the Indians and employed them in their first settlements in the newly discovered country, but the supply not being found sufficient and the Indians not being very well adapted for the purpose in the tropical regions, negro slaves were introduced from Africaーthe first being imported into Hispaniola (St. Domingo), in the year 1503. The example of Spain in regard to the use of negro slaves in her American Colonies was followed by all the other nations of Europe, who undertook the colonization of the newly found continent and islands, to-wit: the Portuguese, English, French, Dutch, Danes and Swedes. Sir John Hawkins, an English admiral and adventurer, was the first Englishman known to have engaged in the African slave trade, and he carried his first cargo to the Spanish West India islands about the year 1562. Report says that Queen Elizabeth became a partner in and shared the profits of his subsequent voyages in the prosecution of the trade. From that time the African slave trade became a regular branch of English commerce, and was conducted in its first stages principally under monopolies granted to companies, in the profits of which members of the Royal family, noblemen, courtiers and churchmen, as well as merchants, shared, as was the practice in those days in all important branches of commerce. From the restriction under Charles II, the African trade, including that in slaves, was monopolized by the "Royal African Company" for a number of years; and that company built and established, on the coast of Africa, forts and factories for the purpose of facilitating and protecting the trade; but in the year 1698, the slave trade was thrown open to private traders, upon the payment to the company of a certain percentage towards the support of its forts and factories.

Jubal Early's Last Year of the American Civil War (Expanded, Annotated)【電子書籍】[ General Jubal Early ]

In exile in Canada immediately after the Civil War's conclusion, Jubal Early wrote his personal account of the final year of the war. Typically opinionated, sometimes funny, caustically critical of his opponents, Early nevertheless left an important contribution to the literature of the Civil War, if for no other reason than his proximity to events.

Involved in the major battles of the Shenandoah Valley, the Wilderness, Gettysburg, and more, Jubal Early was one of Lee's key generals. Loved by his men but little-liked by his officers, he was prickly, defensive, and quick tempered.

To the end of his life, Jubal Early was an unreconstructed Confederate and promoter of the Lost Cause movement in the South. The key contribution of this book is Early's military details of battles and the contrast he provides to Grant's accounts. Though Early often relies on minutiae to contradict an account by an enemy (or even another rebel he disagrees with), this book is a book that anyone with interest in the Civil War should read.

For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.

Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Crosshairs on the Capital Jubal Early’s Raid on Washington, D.C., July 1864ーReasons, Reactions, and Results【電子書籍】[ James H. Bruns ]

In an era of battlefield one-upmanship, the raid on the Nation’s Capital in July 1864 was prompted by an earlier failed Union attempt to destroy Richmond and free the Union prisoners held there. Jubal Early’s mission was in part to let the North have a taste of its own medicine by attacking Washington and freeing the Confederate prisoners at Point Lookout in southern Maryland. He was also to fill the South’s larder from unmolested Union fields, mills and barns. By 1864 such southern food raids had become annual wartime events. And he was to threaten and, if possible, capture Washington. This latter task was unrealistic in an age when the success of rifle fire was judged to be successful not by accuracy, but by the amount of lead that was shot into the air. Initially, the Union defenders of the city were larger former slaves, freemen, mechanic, shopkeepers and government clerks, as well as invalids. They might not have known much about riflery and accuracy, but they were capable of putting ample lead on the long until Regular Union regiments arrived. Jubal Early hesitated in attacking Washington, but he held the City at bay while his troops pillaged the countryside for the food Lee’s Army needed to survive. This new account focuses on the reasons, reactions and results of Jubul Early’s raid of 1864. History has judged it to have been a serious threat to the capital, but James H. Bruns examines how the nature of the Confederate raid on Washington in 1864 has been greatly misinterpretedーJubal Early’s maneuvers were in fact only the latest in a series of annual southern food raids. It also corrects some of the thinking about Early’s raid, including the reason behind his orders from General Lee to cross the Potomac and the thoughts behind the proposed raid on Point Lookout and the role of the Confederate Navy in that failed effort. It presents a new prospective in explaining Jubal Early’s raid on Washington by focusing on why things happened as they did in 1864. It identifies the cause-and-effect connections that are truly the stuff of history, forging some of the critical background links that oftentimes are ignored or overlooked in books dominated by battles and leaders.

Old Jube A Biography of General Jubal A. Early【電子書籍】[ Dr. Millard K. Bushong ]

Originally published in 1955, this book tells the story of General Jubal Anderson Early (1816-1894), a lawyer and Confederate general in the American Civil War. He served in the Eastern Theater of the war for the entire conflict, as a division commander under Stonewall Jackson and Richard Stoddert Ewell, and in later actions commanded a corps. He was the Confederate commander in key battles of the Valley Campaigns of 1864, including a daring raid to the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The articles written by him for the Southern Historical Society in the 1870s established the Lost Cause point of view as a long-lasting literary and cultural phenomenon.

This book covers General Early’s rise from second Lieutenant during the Seminole War to General.

Richly illustrated throughout by Timothy T. Pohmer.

“I first became interested in writing a biography of General Jubal Early while I was teaching history at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. The more I investigated this subject, the more I was convinced that for some unexplainable reason historians have neglected one of the great heroes of the Confederacy. In order to acquaint the reader better with one of the South’s almost-forgotten generals, I undertook this study.”ーMillard Kessler Bushong, Preface

Jubal and the Prophet【電子書籍】[ Frieda Clark Hyman ]

Jubal is the son of an important priest in the First Temple; the prophet is Jeremiah; and the time is Jerusalem under siege by the Babylonian Army. Jubal’s father leads the struggle against Babylon. Jeremiah pleads for submission to Babylon.

Jubal, of course, would rather follow his father, but in spite of this natural desire, he is convinced by the message and personality of Jeremiah. His struggles lead him directly into adventure. With his friend Ezra he outwits the commander of the gates of Jerusalem, the jailer who would torture the prophet, and then this boy of courage and wisdom fights heroically in the final battle.

All this, and more is the theme of the book, a story that is filled with constant action, colorful background and human as well as spiritual emotion.

“Jeremiah was the most disquieting of all the prophets. To this day there are some who call him traitor. If, however, a prophet isーas I believe he isーGod’s instrument, a man who speaks because a Power greater than he compels him to speak, there can be no question about Jeremiah’s integrity. Nevertheless, the human being is also present; and it is the tension between the prophet’s function as God’s mouthpiece, and his humanity as a patriot, that constitutes the theme of this book: he must condemn his people and his country even while he loves them.”ーFrieda Clark Hyman

In Book I, young Jubal was found hanging in a woodshed near death, the victim of ongoing and horrific abuse at the hands of his mother. Taken from his home in Mobile, Alabama, and given into the care of his grandmother by a panicked father, Jubal grew up in New Orleans, losing all memory of the shocking events of his life before his fifth birthday. As a young adult, he returned to Mobile and met with his mother for the first time. This resulted only in grief for Jubal and for those who loved him.

In 1914, only tax revenue provided more income for the state of Alabama than that provided by the lease of convicts to railroads and to the coal and timber industries. Leased convicts became the property of the leasing company. There were fewer safeguards in place for these prisoners than there had been for former slaves which, in fact, some of them were. They were routinely beaten, starved, and often worked until they died from exhaustion and disease. Their deaths may or may not have been reported along with the request for another prisoner.

As Book II opens, Jubal leaves Mobile, pursuing a business opportunity in the heavily forested hill country of north Alabama. There he encounters the practice of using convict labor in private industry. In his tender, wounded heart, a passion to relieve the suffering of these men is ignited, a passion that would consume and govern him, no matter where it led or what it cost him.

Jubal Early Robert E. Lee's Bad Old Man【電子書籍】[ Benjamin Franklin Cooling III ]

In Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee’s Bad Old Man, a new critical biography of Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Anderson Early, Civil War historian B.F. Cooling III takes a fresh look at one of the most fascinating, idiosyncratic characters in the pantheon of Confederate heroes and villains. Dubbed by Robert E. Lee as his "bad old man" because of his demeanor, Early was also Lee's chosen instrument to attack and capture Washington as well as defend the Shenandoah Valley granary in the summer and fall of 1864. Neither cornered nor snared by Union opponents, Early came closest of any Confederate general to capturing Washington, ending Lincoln's presidency, and forever changing the fate of the Civil War and American history. His failure to grapple with this moment of historical immortality and emerge victorious bespeaks as much his own foibles as the counter-efforts of the enemy, the effects of weather and the shortcomings of his army. From the pinnacle of success, Jubal Early descended to the trough of defeat within three months when opponent General Philip Sheridan resoundingly defeated him in the Valley campaign of 1864.

Jubal Early famously exhibited a harder, less gallant personal as a leading Confederate practitioner of "hard" or destructive war, a tactic usually ascribed to Union generals Hunter, Sheridan, and Sherman. An extortionist of Yankee capital in northern towns in Pennsylvania and Marylandーtypically in the form of tributeーEarly also became forever associated with the wanton destruction of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, as well as Congressman Thaddeus Stevens private commerical ironworks, and the private dwellings of Maryland governor Augustus Bradford and then Postmaster General Montgomery Blair. How war hardened a crabbed, arthritically hobbled but brilliantly pragmatic soldier and lawyer offers one of the most fascinating puzzles of personality in Civil War history.

One of the most alluring yet repellent figures of Southern Confederate history, Jubal Early would devolve from the ideal prewar constitutional unionist to the postwar personification of the unreconstructed rebel and progenitor of the “lost cause” explanation for the demise of the Confederacy's experiment in rebellion or independence. This critical study explains how one of Virginia's loyal sons came through war and peace to garner a unique position in the Confederacy's pantheon of heroesーand the Union’s cabal of military villains.

Jubal Early: Robert E. Lee’s Bad Old Man will appeal to anyone interested in Civil War history and Confederate history.

Fighting for the Lost Cause: The Life and Career of General Jubal Early【電子書籍】[ Charles River Editors ]

*Includes pictures of Early and important people, places, and events in his life.*Includes excerpts from Early's autobiography discussing battles like Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and more.*Discusses Early's influence on the Lost Cause and Civil War history. *Includes a Bibliography for further reading.*Includes a Table of Contents. Jubal Early (1816-1894) fought two big wars during his life. About 150 years ago, Early played an important role as a general for the Confederacy, fighting his way up the ranks until he was eventually given an independent command by Robert E. Lee in late 1864. Early served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, rising from regiment commander to Corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia, and he played crucial roles in key battles like Gettysburg and in the Shenandoah Valley campaigns. During his raid toward Washington D.C., his forces nearly killed President Lincoln during a battle at Fort Stevens, making Lincoln the only sitting president to come under live fire. However, it was Earlys writing that truly changed history. During the 1870s, Early was one of the writers for the Southern Historical Society who helped establish the Lost Cause, a cultural phenomenon that dominated the writing of Civil War history for a century and is still a widely held view today. His autobiography, Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early , Confederate States of America, is a perfect example of Lost Cause writing, in which the Confederacy is unable to overcome the Norths vast advantage in men and resources. At the same time, the Lost Cause was primarily a creation of men from Virginia, so in turn they deified Lee and are widely responsible for Lees immense popularity today. And since Lee could do no wrong in their eyes, writers like Early looked for others to blame for the Souths loss, especially at Gettysburg, which was widely viewed then and now as the chief turning point of the war. For years, Early and James Longstreet argued in writing over who was to blame for the loss at Gettysburg, leading both men to attack each other in print. Those who personally knew Early wouldnt have been shocked by his writing. Though Lee admired Early and playfully referred to him as his Bad Old Man due to Earlys short temper, that same temper crossed many of Earlys subordinates. Early also alienated subordinates by being quick to point the finger at them for mistakes, even if they were his fault. Nevertheless, Earlys biography is a great read not just for the story it tells but also as one of the best examples of Lost Cause writing, and how the Lost Cause was developed in the years after the war.Fighting for the Lost Cause: The Life and Career of General Jubal Early chronicles the life and career of Early and analyzes his war record, but it also looks at the critical role he played in creating and perpetuating the historiography of the Civil War.

Jubal Early (1816-1894) was an important general for the Confederacy, but his most lasting contribution to the South came after the war. Early served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, rising from regiment commander to Corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. Early fought in key battles like Gettysburg and the Shenandoah Valley campaigns, and during his raid toward Washington D.C., his forces nearly killed President Lincoln during a battle at Fort Stevens, making him the only sitting president to come under live fire. However, it was Earlys writing that truly changed history. Early was one of the writers for the Southern Historical Society during the 1870s that established the Lost Cause, a cultural phenomenon that dominated the writing of Civil War history for a century and is still a widely held view today. His autobiography, Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early , Confederate States of America, is a perfect example of Lost Cause writing, in which the Confederacy is unable to overcome the Norths vast advantage in men and resources. At the same time, the Lost Cause deified Lee, thus looking for others to blame for the Souths loss. For years, Early and James Longstreet argued in writing over who was to blame for the loss at Gettysburg, leading both men to attack each other in print. Earlys famous autobiography is a great read not just for the story it tells but also as one of the best examples of Lost Cause writing, and how the Lost Cause was developed in the years after the war. This edition includes original commentary that discusses the establishment of the Lost Cause and covers the argument between Early and Longstreet. This account of General Jubal Early at Gettysburg is an account of the campaign culminating with the Battle of Gettysburg taken from Earlys autobiography, and it is specially formatted with a Table of Contents and images of the battle and Early.

The Shenandoah Valley Campaign: March -November 1864: Grant, Lincoln, Sheridan, Meade, Monocacy, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Cedar Creek, Lt. General Jubal A. Early, McCausland【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

As 1864 began, the outlook was grim for Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his generals. The encouraging victories in 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia, and Chickamauga, Georgia, were diminished by the repulse of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and by the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The signs were clear that the Confederacy had lost the strategic initiative. Davis now had to conserve Southern resources to fight a defensive war. He had to hope that either Union defeats in 1864 would bring the North to the negotiation table or that a war-weary Northern electorate would oust President Abraham Lincoln from office in November and replace him with someone willing to make peace.
On the other hand, the strategic outlook for the Union in 1864 was promising. The previous year had ended on a positive note. The Federal Army of the Potomac had fended off Lee's northern invasion and forced the rebels to retreat to central Virginia. In the Western Theater, three Federal armies coordinated by Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant had won a signal victory at Chattanooga, Tennessee, in November 1863 and were pressing toward the Confederate industrial and rail center at Atlanta, Georgia. Impressed by Grant's aggressive command style and success, Lincoln brought him to Washington in early March 1864 to take command of all Federal armies. He promoted Grant to the rank of lieutenant general and named him general in chief of the U.S. Army, creating unity of command for all Union field forces.
When Grant arrived in Washington, he found Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac facing Lee's Army of Northern Virginia across the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers, from Fredericksburg to Culpeper, Virginia. In addition to this main area of operations was Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, a critical region for both sides west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The American civil war is raging. Union forces are converging on Dahlonega Georgia where Confederate gold is stored. Jubal Rawlings is assigned to hide it in the North Georgia mountains. He does so just before a Union cavalry detachment catches up with him. Jubal dies after the battle and the ton of gold is lost to history.
150 years later, clues to its location are unearthed by a young couple who have nothing to lose but to hunt for it. This is the story of a remarkable young woman who has the grit and determination to keep what is hers.
I love treasure hunting stories and wanted to write one, somehow related to the civil war. I’m from the South and so much of who we are as a group is defined by that conflict of our ancestors. I tend to create characters who seem ill equipped for the situation, but somehow find the resources within themselves to prevail. There are twists and turns you won’t expect and I hope to entertain. And sell books of course.
