To-day Zen as a living faith can be found in its pure form only among the Japanese Buddhists. You cannot find it in the so-called Gospel of Buddha anymore than you can find Unitarianism in the Pentateuch, nor can you find it in China and India any more than you can find life in fossils of bygone ages. It is beyond all doubt that it can be traced back to Shakya Muni himself, nay, even to pre-Buddhistic times, because Brahmanic teachers practised Dhyana, or Meditation, from earliest times.

The Religion of the Samurai A Study of Zen Philosophy and Discipline in China and Japan【電子書籍】[ Kaiten Nukariya ]

"The Religion of the Samurai" is a classic religious text by Kaiten Nukariya published in 1913.

Zen was uniquely suited to the Samurai of Japan. The high moral principles of Buddhism, when adopted and adapted by the Japanese warriors who became the Samurai, created an austere philosophy of singular beauty and depth. Its characteristic requirements of strict control over body and mind was exemplified by ancient warrior monks whose serene countenance, even in the face of certain death, made them much admired even by their foes.

Zen may be the most misunderstood of the world's moral philosophies. While it is often classified as a Religion, it is frequently considered by its adherents to be a utilitarian philosophy, a collection of rational moral precepts or, even more simply, as a state of being. The aim of the practice of Zen is to become Enlightened and achieve the beatitude of Nirvana.

Zen: The Religion Of The Samurai: A Study Of Zen Philosophy And Discipline In China And Japan A Study of Zen Philosophy and Discipline in China and Japan【電子書籍】[ Kaiten Nukariya ]

The historical importance of Zen can hardly be exaggerated. After its introduction into China in the sixth century, A.D., it grew ascendant through the Sui (598-617) and the Tang dynasty (618-906), and enjoyed greater popularity than any other sect of Buddhism during the whole period of the Sung (976-1126) and the Southern Sung dynasty (1127-1367). In these times its commanding influence became so irresistible that Confucianism, assimilating the Buddhist teachings, especially those of Zen, into itself and changing its entire aspect, brought forth the so-called Speculative philosophy. And in the Ming dynasty (1368-1659) the principal doctrines of Zen were adopted by a celebrated Confucian scholar, Wang Yang Ming, who thereby founded a school, through which Zen exercised profound influence on Chinese and Japanese men of letters, statesmen, and soldiers. As regards Japan, it was first introduced into the island as the faith first for the Samurai or the military class, and moulded the characters of many distinguished soldiers whose lives adorn the pages of her history. Afterwards it gradually found its way to palaces as well as to cottages through literature and art, and at last permeated through every fibre of the national life. It is Zen that modern Japan, especially after the Russo-Japanese War, has acknowledged as an ideal doctrine for her rising generation.

Harrington, an American expert on U.S. Naval operations in World War II, worked closely with Yokota in preparing this first English language edition of his book.
Japanese Zen Buddhist monk Kaiten Nukariya's work, "The Religion of the Samurai," examines the religious and philosophical traditions of the samurai, the military class of mediaeval Japan. The book also discusses the ethics of Confucianism, Shintoism, and the place of Buddhism in the samurai's code of behavior. According to Nukariya, the samurai's religion was a special synthesis of numerous spiritual traditions, with Buddhism predominating. He examines how the samurai's view of life and death was impacted by the Buddhist ideas of impermanence, non-attachment, and the nature of suffering. He also explores the Confucian values of respect for authority and social order, which had a significant impact on the development of the samurai code of behavior. The significance of self-control, self-awareness, and inner calm in samurai spiritual practices is emphasized by Nukariya throughout the book. He also discusses the significance of mindfulness and meditation in developing these traits and how they enabled the samurai to reach a level of enlightenment. Overall, "The Religion of the Samurai" offers a thorough analysis of the religious and philosophical beliefs that influenced samurai culture and their way of life.

The Religion of the Samurai: A Study of Zen Philosophy and Discipline in China and Japan【電子書籍】[ Kaiten Nukariya ]

THE ANCIENT FAITH Philosophical Theory of the Universe.ーThe problem of the universe has never offered the slightest difficulty to Chinese philosophers. Before the beginning of all things, there was Nothing. In the lapse of ages Nothing coalesced into Unity, the Great Monad. After more ages, the Great Monad separated into Duality, the Male and Female Principles in nature; and then, by a process of biogenesis, the visible universe was produced. Popular Cosmogeny.ーAn addition, however, to this simple system had to be made, in deference to, and on a plane with, the intelligence of the masses. According to this, the Male and Female Principles were each subdivided into Greater and Lesser, and then from the interaction of these four agencies a being, named P'an Ku, came into existence. He seems to have come into life endowed with perfect knowledge, and his function was to set the economy of the universe in order. He is often depicted as wielding a huge adze, and engaged in constructing the world. With his death the details of creation began. His breath became the wind; his voice, the thunder; his left eye, the sun; his right eye, the moon; his blood flowed in rivers; his hair grew into trees and plants; his flesh became the soil; his sweat descended as rain; while the parasites which infested his body were the origin of the human race. Recognition and Worship of Spirits.ーEarly Chinese writers tell us that Fu Hsi, B.C. 2953-2838, was the first Emperor to organize sacrifices to, and worship of, spirits. In this he was followed by the Yellow Emperor, B.C. 2698-2598, who built a temple for the worship of God, in which incense was used, and first sacrificed to the Mountains and Rivers. He is also said to have established the worship of the sun, moon, and five planets, and to have elaborated the ceremonial of ancestral worship. God the Father, Earth the Mother.ーThe Yellow Emperor was followed by the Emperor Shao Hao, B.C. 2598-2514, "who instituted the music of the Great Abyss in order to bring spirits and men into harmony." Then came the Emperor Chuan Hsu, B.C. 2514-2436, of whom it is said that he appointed an officer "to preside over the worship of God and Earth, in order to form a link between the spirits and man," and also "caused music to be played for the enjoyment of God." Music, by the way, is said to have been introduced into worship in imitation of thunder, and was therefore supposed to be pleasing to the Almighty. After him followed the Emperor Ti K'u, B.C. 2436-2366, who dabbled in astronomy, and "came to a knowledge of spiritual beings, which he respectfully worshipped." The Emperor Yao, B.C. 2357-2255, built a temple for the worship of God, and also caused dances to be performed for the enjoyment of God on occasions of special sacrifice and communication with the spiritual world. After him, we reach the Emperor Shun, B.C. 2255-2205, in whose favour Yao abdicated

The Religion of the Samurai - The Original Classic Edition【電子書籍】[ Nukariya Kaiten ]

This is a delightful book on the history of Zen in Japan. The author starts from the beginnings of zen philosophy in China and brings you right to the Kamakura period where zen became the fashion with the warrior class. I say fashion, but it was/is more than that. It is indeed a study of how a particular philosophy ( zen ) can take hold and flourish in a specific culture, in this case Japan. If you are interested in Zen at all, you will enjoy this book! Highly recommended.

I ended up submerged in an wealth of explanations (understandings) such as, where did the name Zen come from, what are the basic tenets, how is it different from others. The book reads as if written today except for the occasional dated grammar.

The book goes much beyond the roots of Zen. I spent the last hour reading the discussion on the nature of man. Is man fundamentally good, fundamentally bad? The book explores four options and then moves to explore the relationship of man to nature (the universe in my terminology). Wonderful and easy to read.

For those who wish to gain a better understand of oriental philosophy and an understanding of Zen in particular, this book, Zen - The Religion of the Samurai, does an excellent job of describing the evolution of Zen Buddhism from its beginnings in India some 500 years before the Christian era and its growth as it spread across China and into Japan. The story of the evolution of Zen in becoming the dominant set of beliefs and practices of Japan is well documented and carefully presented. The elements of Buddhism are shown in their proper historical context and augmented by lessons and examples from the most significant teachers, sages and masters.

Too many Westerners have the mistaken notion that Zen is monolithic and uniform. This excellent historical analysis of the evolution of Zen Buddhism will quickly dispel that notion and provide detailed information on the various historical forms and sects. Here you will find solid information on what is and what is not Zen Buddhism.

This book is highly recommended not only for its value as a comparative religion reference, but also as a general guide to the philosophy of the East.

La religione dei Samurai Filosofia e disciplina ZEN in Cina e Giappone【電子書籍】[ Kaiten Nukariya ]

And the Americans kept it secret as well. Embarrassed by the attack, the U.S. Navy refused to salvage the sunken Mighty Miss. Not until 2001, when a diving team located the wreck, would survivors learn what really happened.

In Kaiten, Michael Mair and Joy Waldron tell the full story, from newly revealed secrets of the Kaiten development and training schools to gripping firsthand accounts of U.S. Navy survivors in the wake of the attack, as well as the harrowing recovery efforts that came later.

INCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS
