A New Book from the Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author

The Most Valuable Companies in the World Leverage a Powerful Secret. Do you?

Taylor Swift isn't a singer, songwriter, or entertainer. She's an IP Company-filing over 300 trademarks (and counting), including The Tortured Poets Department, Swiftites, Tayplay, and even her cat's names-Meredith and Olivia Swift. Taylor Swift doesn't protect her IP because she's a big star. She's a big star because she protects her IP.

Play-Doh also takes its IP seriously, protecting the scent of its modeling compound with the proprietary description, "Sweet, slightly musky, vanilla fragrance, with slight overtones of cherry, combined with the smell of a salted, wheat-based dough." Even The Coca-Cola Company knows its value is found in its trade secret, not the carbonated beverage it bottles.

You're not that different. But sadly, most entrepreneurs don't think they have any intellectual property. Truth is, they just don't know how to find it. The few who do, don't know how to protect it. Over 90% of your company's value is linked to your IP. Unless you value your IP, your clients, competitors, and collaborators won't truly value you.

Kary Oberbrunner, entrepreneur and inventor of Instant IP?, and Katherine Rubino, a Partner at Caldwell, the fastest-growing IP law firm in America for more than four years in a row, team up to offer a proven guide for identifying your ideas and protecting them the fastest, easiest, and most effective way possible.

Get ready to discover:

Why you should not promote your IP until you first protect your IP

Which IP protection strategy makes sense for your unique circumstances

Your Ideas are Valuable. Poetry is the Portal【電子書籍】[ Kary Oberbrunner ]

Poetry served as my secret confidant.

In early innocent days, I assembled words like LEGO? blocks when my heart felt more than I could speak. On a rare occasion, I presented my poem to a crush, a grade-school girl unsure how to respond.

I felt the risk and sometimes the sting. So I returned to my mask, realizing most people weren't ready for honesty.

But in the quiet shadows, I didn't need to lie. Poetry became my portal.

POETRY. Art to admire? Or gibberish to ignore?

Poll social media and you'll soon locate lovers and haters.

For writers, poetry is both the safest medium and the scariest, all wrapped into one. We hide our hearts in plain sight. At the same time we bear our naked souls to the most casual passerby.

For readers, poetry is both the most polarizing and unifying medium. In one line, we rally around the messenger sent from the stars. In another, we take up weapons for the semi-charged words they dared to craft.

This is the paradox, the mystery, the wonder.

The Deeper Path A Simple Method for Finding Clarity, Mastering Life, and Doing Your Purpose Every Day【電子書籍】[ Kary Oberbrunner ]

Don’t live another day without knowing your purpose.

The majority of people invest more time designing a two-week vacation than designing their lives. But without a map, we coast through life feeling lost and directionless. We're already deadーwe just haven't made it official.

We may be tempted to downplay this trend, but there is a hefty cost. According to Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, "The most damaging thing in the life of a child is the unlived life of the parent."

It doesn’t have to be like this. The people who have found their way are the ones who have found their why. Unfortunately, the world isn't going to hand you your purpose on a silver platter. It's your responsibility to become what L.P. Jacks called “a master in the art of living.”

In this updated and expanded edition, author Kary Oberbrunner shares a simple method for finding clarity, mastering life, and doing your purpose every day. If you’re new to The Deeper Path, get ready to discover how to

Say yes to the people and events that matter most and no to those that don’t.

Take control of your calendar and experience margin once again.

Create a life worth living defined by purpose and passion.

Your clarity awaits inside. Evolution and Speciation in Fungi and Eukaryotic Biodiversity【電子書籍】[ T. J. Pandian ]

Being sessiles like autotrophic plants and heterotrophics as animals, fungi are fascinating eukaryotes. In them, the need for external digestion has demanded surface expansion and limited tissues to < eight types. To reproduce, 96% fungi engage spores. Being 800 times denser than air, water renders the spore dispersal costlier. Their externally excreted digestive enzymes may rapidly be dissolved in water. These have limited 96% fungi to land. As 90% fungi are clonals, and only 1,400 species are erected/y (year), their number may not exceed 260,000 species over the next 100 y. Mating types arising from homothallic basidium and their risky external fertilization in air have limited diversity to 23,975 species in Basidiomycota. Contrastingly, heterothallism and safer internal fertilization have accelerated it to 77,083 species in Ascomycotina. About 46, 40 and 14% fungi are decomposers, parasites and symbionts. Fungal ability to decompose in dry soil is 10 times greater than that of bacteria. Volume of dead plants decomposed by fungi is ~ 38 g carbon/m2/y. The mycorrhizas facilitate 85% angiosperms to acquire water and minerals, enhance productivity and fight against drought and pollutants. During the geological past, lichens have weathered rock and formed the present landscape. Only 121 fungal species excrete digestive enzymes to meet industrial demand. The beneficial fungi contribute 1,000 billion US$. Parasitic fungi cause 1.6 million human deaths and > 20% loss of commercial crops. Despite their ecological and economic importance, no university offers a degree course in Mycology. For 2,056,907 eukaryotic species, this book elaborates the role played by environmental factors (i) spatial distribution, (ii) light-temperature, (iii) precipitation-liquid water and biological attributes, (iv) cellularity, (v) symmetry, (vi) clonality, (vii) sexuality, (viii) modality and (ix) motility that either accelerate or decelerate biodiversity. About 20 and 80% eukaryotes are aquatics and terrestrials. Decreasing light intensity and temperature reduce diversity from the equator toward the polar zones. Water availability also reduces the diversity from 5.4 - 65.5 species/km2 in tropical evergreen forests to < 0.0045 species/km2 in deserts and polar zones. Unicellularity and radial symmetry decelerate the diversity to < 2 and < 26%, respectively. Increase in tissue types from < nine in lower eukaryotes to > 200 in mammals reduces clonality from 100 to 0%. Strategies developed by eukaryotes reduce selfing by < 24% in plants and < 1% in metazoans.

Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Heat Shock Proteins in Infectious Disease【

Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Heat Shock Proteins in Infectious Disease provides the most current review of the literature relating to the role and influence of heat shock (stress) proteins on the establishment, progression and resolution of infectious disease. Written by leaders in the field of heat shock proteins (HSP) and their biological and immunological properties, the contributors provide a fascinating insight into the complex relationship between, and the involvement of prokaryotic and eukaryotic HSP in disease states. It has been known for some considerable time that heat shock proteins from prokaryotic organisms are immunodominant molecules that are intimately involved in the induction of potential protective inflammatory responses, and this aspect of HSP biology is updated herein. In addition to regulating heat shock protein gene expression, the transcription factor HSF1 also appears to play an important role in regulating immune responses to infection. Heat shock proteins are now known to influence infectious disease processes in a number of diverse ways: they are involved in the propagation of prions, the replication and morphogenesis of viruses, and the resistance of parasites to chemotherapy. These proteins also appear to be important mediators of bacteria-host interactions and inflammation, the latter via interactions with cell surface molecules and structures such as Toll-like receptors and lipid rafts. Heat shock proteins can be expressed on the surface of infected cells, and this is likely to provide a target for the innate immune response. Elevated levels of circulating HSP are present in infectious diseases and these proteins might therefore regulate inflammatory responses to pathogenic challenge on a systemic basis. Heat shock proteins are also implicated in the impact of genital tract infections on the reproductive outcome, as well as in the local and systemic consequences of periodontal disease. Fever-range temperatures can induce the expression of heat shock proteins, and the final chapter in the book examines the influence of fever-range hyperthermia on a variety of cells and the organization of plasma membranes. This book is an essential read for graduates and postgraduates in Biology, pro- and eukaryotic Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Inflammatory and Infectious Disease, and Pathology.

Hydrogenosomes and Mitosomes: Mitochondria of Anaerobic Eukaryotes【

The new edition focuses on the latest information on mitochondrion-derived organelles, particularly on hydrogenosomes and mitosomes. It has become more and more evident that hydrogenosomes and mitosomes are just two specific members of larger family of organelles derived to various extent from mitochondria due to adaptation to oxygen-poor environment and to the parasitic life style. Since the 1st edition, investigation of free-living protists and commensals has revealed that there is a continuous spectrum of mitochondria-derived organelles from typical aerobic mitochondria, mitochondria with stepwise loss of respiratory chain complexes and with concomitant gain of anaerobic pathways (particularly hydrogenase), via hydrogenosomes and mitosomes to the newly discovered organisms that completely lost mitochondria.

Most of the experimental data collected relates to the human pathogens Trichomonas vaginalis harboring hydrogenosomes, and Giardia intestinalis and Entamoeba histolytica with mitosoms. In principle, hydrogenosomes are hydrogen and ATP producing organelles, while the only known function in Giardia mitosomes is synthesis of iron-sulfur clusters, whereas mitosomes of E. histolytica possess the recently discovered sulfur activation pathway. Functions of other unusual mitochondria are mostly predicted based on transcriptomic/genomic analyses as corresponding organisms are not amenable to biochemical studies.

Investigations on evolution and function of mitochondria-derived organelles substantially changed conventional views on mitochondrion from textbook models of an oxygen-consuming powerhouse of cells to a large family of organelles, variables in their structure and function in which hydrogenosomes and mitosome represent the most divergent anaerobic members.

How Molecular Forces and Rotating Planets Create Life The Emergence and Evolution of Prokaryotic Cells【電子書籍】[ Jan Spitzer ]

A reconceptualization of origins research that exploits a modern understanding of non-covalent molecular forces that stabilize living prokaryotic cells.

Scientific research into the origins of life remains exploratory and speculative. Science has no definitive answer to the biggest questions--"What is life?" and "How did life begin on earth?" In this book, Jan Spitzer reconceptualizes origins research by exploiting a modern understanding of non-covalent molecular forces and covalent bond formation--a physicochemical approach propounded originally by Linus Pauling and Max Delbr?ck. Spitzer develops the Pauling-Delbr?ck premise as a physicochemical jigsaw puzzle that identifies key stages in life's emergence, from the formation of first oceans, tidal sediments, and proto-biofilms to progenotes, proto-cells and the first cellular organisms.

Evolutionary Dynamics of Complex Communications Networks【電子書籍】[ Vasileios Karyotis ]

Until recently, most network design techniques employed a bottom-up approach with lower protocol layer mechanisms affecting the development of higher ones. This approach, however, has not yielded fascinating results in the case of wireless distributed networks.

Addressing the emerging aspects of modern network analysis and design, Evolutionary Dynamics of Complex Communications Networks introduces and develops a top-bottom approach where elements of the higher layer can be exploited in modifying the lowest physical topologyーclosing the network design loop in an evolutionary fashion similar to that observed in natural processes.

This book provides a complete overview of contemporary design approaches from the viewpoint of network science and complex/social network analysis. A significant part of the text focuses on the classification and analysis of various network modification mechanisms for wireless decentralized networks that exploit social features from relevant online social networks.

Each chapter begins with learning objectives and introductory material and slowly builds to more detailed analysis and advanced concepts. Each chapter also identifies open issues, while by the end of the book, potential research directions are summarized for the more interested researcher or graduate student.

The approach outlined in the book will help network designers and administrators increase the value of their infrastructure without requiring any significant additional investment. Topics covered include: basic network graph models and properties, cognitive methods and evolutionary computing, complex and social network analysis metrics and features, and analysis and development of the distinctive structure and features of complex networks.

Considering all aspects of modern network analysis and design, the text covers the necessary material and background to make it a suitable source of reference for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and scientists.

Prokaryotic Gene Regulation Methods and Protocols【

This volume presents a collection of versatile methodologies to investigate prokaryotic gene regulation, with focus on the different levels of information processing and usefulness for various model organisms, whether archaeal, bacterial, or both. The chapters in this book are divided into four sections. Section One covers methods that enable the study of the structure of the bacterial/archaeal chromosome, the main template for all gene regulatory processes, and its epigenetic modification. Section Two looks at a selection of approaches that enable higher levels of understanding of transcription initiation, a key step in information processing.
