Imperial Vanities: The Adventures of the Baker Brothers and Gordon of Khartoum【電子書籍】[ Brian Thompson ]

A true story of empire set in the Crimea, Sudan, Ceylon and Egypt ? beautifully written and shot through with real psychological and historical insight.

'Victorian Britain, that seemingly most conformist of ages, was in fact teeming with eccentrics. The fabulous Baker Brothers were eccentric in a conformist way for the time: Sir Samuel searched for the source of the Nile; Baker Pasha became leader of the Ottoman army. But it was that epitome of empire, and epitome of the Christian English gentleman, who was the most peculiar of them all: 'Chinese' Gordon is finally depicted as the anarchist he really was as he marched to his death against the Mahdi. It is Thompson's triumph that he gives these characters, straitjacketed first by their time, and then by history, the freedom to dance across the page once more.' JUDITH FLANDERS

Imperial Vanities is an adventure story in the high tradition, ranging from the Upper Nile, to Ceylon, Egypt and the slave markets of the Balkans. Livingstone, Speke and Burton also make an appearance, with the shadowy and elusive Laurence Oliphant spying from the sidelines. Written with Thompson's masterly touch, this is history at its best.

'A tale of Empire at its most eccentric. Part biography, part history, part adventure yarn, Imperial Vanities is an ingeniously enjoyable read.' Sad Tales of Khartoum【電子書籍】[ Babiker Abbas ]

When Sudan gained independence after about sixty years of Egyptian-British rule, there were high aspirations that the country would be a leading African state, a model for others. A democratically elected government was put into office and was performing very well. Then a military coup occurred, designed and endorsed by two parties who were allied as a ruling majority, because they were sure that the opposition was about to regain Parliamentary confidence. Sudan lost political stability for good. A series of weak and fragile democracies were succeeded by a series of military coups. Lives were lost, property confiscated and vandalized, freedoms alienated, and a once peaceful and thriving nation gradually became miserable. Sad Tales of Khartoum is about some of these miserable encounters. Many citizens were hanged because they had independent ideas; many met similar fate because they owned dollars, lawfully, sometimes as a family legacy; while others were killed, their homes burned, without anybody telling them why. The book is a record of the efforts and sacrifices forwarded by one African nation in the struggle for democracy and honest rule. It also records the failure of the elite in modern Africa to come forward with an original, realistic scheme to address Africas chronic ailments. The tragic events depicted in the book demonstrate the disparity between the aspirations of the common people and the intrigues practiced by the elite in their bequest for power.

Fatima's Room A Novel Set in Khartoum, Sudan【電子書籍】[ Charlotte Schiander Gray ]

Fatima’s Room is a novel set in Khartoum, Sudan. Fatima is a young woman accused of an unimaginable crime. She is confined to her room while her uncles will decide her fate. Fatima fills the hot and worrisome days of waiting, by writing in her journal. She remembers the time before her imprisonment, and imagines what the future might be. All the while family members come and go, interrupting her reflection with various schemes: to reconcileーor escape. Nicolas E. Barron, author and reviewer at www.nicolasebarron.com says, "Fatima’s Room is an insightful book by someone who lived and worked for years with girls in Sudan. Gray does a wonderful job flipping between past and present to bring us up to speed while advancing the story. This story, of universal impact, is replicated with varying details across the globe." Charlotte S. Gray writes in the epilogue: The story of Fatima comes from one of my students, whose name was not Fatima. She had told me about her unhappy home life, where the girls functioned as domestics and were denied recognition as individual persons. Their father would shout at them, “I will kill you if you don’t come straight home from school. I will kill you if…this. If…that.” What if SHE killed HIM? That story has never been told. A daughter who kills her father is not possible. Her husband, yes. Her children, yes. But her father? No. Telling this story appealed to me because it symbolizes the ultimate rebellion against patriarchal suppression.

Letters From Khartoum Written During the Siege【電子書籍】[ Frank Power ]

It was in May, 1883, that Edmund Dwyer Gray, the chairman of the Freeman’s Journal, conceived the idea of making his paper a pioneer in providing its readers with foreign news. The Soudan, as it was then known, was in a state of wild unrest. The Mahdi’s followers had revolted, and British troops in and around Khartoum were having a bad time. The years 1884 and ‘85 were fraught with gravest apprehensions for their safety.

No American or English journals had correspondents in any part of North Africa, and since a brief message had come through to London announcing the destruction of Col. William Hicks’ Armyーannihilated on its way to attack the Mahdi’s headquartersーnothing had been learned of subsequent events. It was then that Mr. Gray seized the occasion, and made the Dublin Freeman’s Journal one of the most frequently-quoted publications of our time.

The man he chose, Mr. Frank Power, known to his colleagues in Dublin’s Prince’s street as “Ghazi” Power, was the most dare-devil, resourceful and versatile member of his staff, equal to any emergency and avid for the ordeal that would try his mettle. His employer handed him a blank cheque, and told him to make all speed from Gravesend to Cairo, and, by hook or crook, to penetrate into Khartoum and dispatch all that he could gather about the state of affairs there and in the country around.

The Government replies that followed were based on Freeman’s Journal despatches or telegrams to Whitehall, and all revealed the growing gravity of the situation. Before many weeks of 1885 had expired the tragic news came from Mr. Power that General Gordon and several of his staff had been butchered in January by the Mahdi’s mercenaries.

Mr. Power’s letters brought the story of the siege down to July 31st, 1884, and the present volume consisting of Power’s letters to his family describing the siege of Khartoum was first published the following year.

Khartoum at Night Fashion and Body Politics in Imperial Sudan【電子書籍】[ Marie Grace Brown ]

In the first half of the twentieth century, a pioneering generation of young women exited their homes and entered public space, marking a new era for women's civic participation in northern Sudan. A provocative new public presence, women's civic engagement was at its core a bodily experience. Amid the socio-political upheavals of imperial rule, female students, medical workers, and activists used a careful choreography of body movements and fashion to adapt to imperial mores, claim opportunities for political agency, and shape a new standard of modern, mobile womanhood.

Khartoum at Night is the first English-language history of these women's lives, examining how their experiences of the British Empire from 1900?1956 were expressed on and through their bodies. Central to this story is the tobe: a popular, modest form of dress that wrapped around a woman's head and body. Marie Grace Brown shows how northern Sudanese women manipulated the tucks, folds, and social messages of the tobe to deftly negotiate the competing pulls of modernization and cultural authenticity that defined much of the imperial experience. Her analysis weaves together the threads of women's education and activism, medical midwifery, urban life, consumption, and new behaviors of dress and beauty to reconstruct the worlds of politics and pleasure in which early-twentieth-century Sudanese women lived.

The Dash for Khartoum : A Tale of Nile Expedition Complete with original illustrations【電子書籍】[ G.A. Henty ]

The story of the Nile Expedition is so recent that no word of introduction is necessary to the historical portion of the tale. The moral, such as it is, of the story of the two lads brought up as brothers isーNever act in haste, for repentance is sure to follow. In this case great anxiety and unhappiness were caused through a lad acting as he believed for the best, but without consulting those who had every right to a voice in the matter. That all came right in the end in no way affects this excellent rule, for all might have gone wrong. We are often misled by a generous impulse, more often perhaps than by an evil one, but the consequences may be just as serious in the one case as the other. When in trouble you should always go freely to your best friends and natural advisers, and lay the case fully before them. It may be that, if the trouble has arisen from your own fault, you will have to bear their temporary displeasure, but this is a small thing in comparison with the permanent injury that may arise from acting on your own impulse.

In most cases, cowardice lies at the bottom of concealment, and cowardice is of all vices the most contemptible; while the fear of the displeasure of a parent has ruined many a boy's life. Therefore, when you are in serious trouble always go to your best friend, your father, and lay the case[Pg vi] frankly and honestly before him; for you may be sure that present displeasure and even punishment are but small things in comparison with the trouble that may arise from trying to get out of the difficulty in other ways.

Khartoum The Ultimate Imperial Adventure【電子書籍】[ Michael Asher ]

The British campaign in the Sudan in Queen Victoria's reign is an epic tale of adventure more thrilling than any fiction. The story begins with the massacre of the 11,000 strong Hicks Pasha column in 1883. Sent to evacuate the country, British hero General Gordon was surrounded and murdered in Khartoum by an army of dervishes led by the Mahdi. The relief mission arrived 2 days too late. The result was a national scandal that shocked the Queen and led to the fall of the British government.

Twelve years later it was the brilliant Herbert Kitchener who struck back. Achieving the impossible he built a railway across the desert to transport his troops to the final devastating confrontation at Omdurman in 1898.

Desert explorer and author Michael Asher has reconstructed this classic tale in vivid detail. Having covered every inch of the ground and examined all eyewitness reports, he brings to bear new evidence questioning several accepted aspects of the story. The result is an account that sheds new light on the most riveting tale of honour, courage, revenge and savagery of late Victorian times.

Khartoum 1885 General Gordon's last stand【電子書籍】[ Donald Featherstone ]

Early in 1881 unrest in the Sudan began to crystallise around Mohammed Ibn Ahmed el-Sayyid Abdullah. Proclaiming himself the long-expected Madhi, the Guided One of the Prophet, he preached that the Sudan was to be purged of its Egyptian oppressors. Drawn in by the Egyptian failure to deal with the situation, the British sent General Gordon to organise an evacuation. On reaching Khartoum however, General Gordon believed, incorrectly, that the Madhi could be reasoned with. Instead of negotiating, the Madhi besieged the town for 317 days. This title looks in particular, although not exclusively, at the battles fought by the British columns sent to relieve Khartoum.

It is 1898, and soldiers armed with the latest weapons clash with the unstoppable power of the Sky Lords and their aerial armadas in new and uncharted realms.

Jack never expected to spend his nineteenth birthday crashing a stolen flying machine into the middle of a war. But when he saw soldiers with bolt-action rifles up against an advanced species he knew he’d found something incredible. As they storm Khartoum’s fortified city walls, Jack and the soldiers are transported to an impossible version of their own world. One where great cities rise up into the sky, and are endlessly circled by flying warships, crewed by beings never seen before.

As they set out to explore this strange land filled with violent tribes, and vicious creatures, they uncover a brutal regime that takes slaves and technology from every mirror world they can find. Known as the Sky Lords, they are protected by legions of warriors who travel the skies in their flying warships, and they will stop at nothing to destroy the newcomers, and retake the city that links the Mirror Empires together. The Tropical Utopia Khartoum British Colony 1898-1910【電子書籍】[ Marina d'Errico ]

An ideal city to be rebuilt from scratch where two rivers flow into one another to give birth to the great Nile. An elite team of designers. The progressive utopia of urban planners and doctors between the 19th and 20th centuries, coming to grips with the demographic explosion and with the white man’s civilizing mission. These are a few of the elements that come into play in the British reconstruction of Khartoum in the late 19th-century, after a series of bloody defeats and difficult victories. All the necessary and sufficient conditions for the drafting of a state-of-the art project are met. Instead, it so happens that the plan presents a number of ambiguities intersecting on various levels: the existence of a secret protocol, rooted in a complex military conundrum; the difficult search for a diplomatic balancing act in the British scramble for Africa, between the Berlin Conference and WWI; Victorian England’s rock-steady belief in its own values; the complex cultural and ideological background of the episode’s protagonists. The present essay addresses the combination of all these factors, which, while distancing Khartoum from its idealised image, give an almost fictional quality to its history.

In-Betweenness in Greater Khartoum Spaces, Temporalities, and Identities from Separation to Revolution【

Focusing on Greater Khartoum following South Sudanese independence in 2011, In-Betweenness in Greater Khartoum explores the impact on society of major political events in areas that are neither urban nor rural, public nor private. This volume uses these in-between spaces as a lens to analyze how these events, in combination with other processes, such as globalization and economic neo-liberalization, impact communities across the region. Drawing on original fieldwork and empirical data, the authors uncover the reshaping of new categories of people that reinforce old dichotomies and in doing so underscore a common Sudanese identity.

Earl Kitchener Of Khartoum: The Story Of His Life [Illustrated Edition]【電子書籍】[ Walter Jerrold ]

Includes 8 illustrations.

Field Marshal Horatio Kitchener, 1st Earl of Khartoum still stands as one of the great generals produced by Britain. His career was marked by great deeds, and great controversies. The son of a military family, he trained at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich before his first trip to the Middle East surveying in Palestine in 1874. He joined the newly formed Egyptian Army in 1883, which was in reality controlled by the British, and embarked on campaign in Sudan. He was part of the failed Gordon relief expedition in 1884, and learned a great deal of the area, its people and the military problems of fighting in the arid desert. By 1892 he was Sirdar, head of the Egyptian army, he was given command of the expedition to crush the self-appointed Mahdi who had taken control of large parts of Sudan. It was during this campaign that he gained public and Royal attention after the victories of Atbara and Omdurman that crushed the revolt of the Mahdi.

He served as Lord Robert’s second in command during the Boer War and served with distinction and much success, although his institution of concentration camps caused great outrage and awful civilian distress. Perhaps his greatest services were during the First World War, as Secretary of State for War, fashioning a great civilian army to fight the militarised hordes of Germany in France and Flanders. He may have gained even greater fame, but was tragically lost at sea when the H.M.S. Hampshire was torpedoed in 1916.

An excellent short biography.

The First Jihad Khartoum, and the Dawn of Militant Islam【電子書籍】[ Daniel Allen Butler ]

A “well-researched” account of the nineteenth-century Sudanese cleric who led a bloody holy war, from a New York Times-bestselling author (Publishers Weekly).

Before bin Laden, al-Zarqawi, or Ayatollah Khomeini, there was the Mahdiーthe “Expected One”ーwho raised the Arabs in pan-tribal revolt against infidels and apostates in Sudan.

Born on the Nile in 1844, Muhammed Ahmed grew into a devout, charismatic young man, whose visage was said to have always featured the placid hint of a smile. He developed a ferocious resentment, however, against the corrupt Ottoman Turks, their Egyptian lackeys, and finally, the Europeans who he felt held the Arab people in subjugation. In 1880, he raised the banner of holy war, and thousands of warriors flocked to his side.

The Egyptians dispatched a punitive expedition to the Sudan, but the Mahdist forces destroyed it. In 1883, Col. William Hicks gathered a larger army of nearly ten thousand men. Trapped by the tribesmen in a gorge at El Obeid, it was massacred to a man. Three months later, another British-led force met disaster at El Teb. This was followed by the infamous conflict at Khartoum, during which a treacherous nativeーor patriot, depending upon one’s point of viewーlet the Madhist forces into the city, resulting in the horrifying death of Gen. Charles “Chinese” Gordon at the hands of jihadists.

In today’s world, the Mahdi’s words have been repeated almost verbatim by the jihadists who have attacked New York, Washington, Madrid, and London, and continue to wage war from the Hindu Kush to the Mediterranean. Along with Saladin, the Mahdi stands as an Islamic icon who launched his own successful crusade against the West. This deeply researched work reminds us that the “clash of civilizations” that supposedly came upon us in September 2001 in fact began much earlier, and “lays important tracks into the study of terror, fundamentalism and the early clash between Islam and Christianity” (Publishers Weekly).

Our Caughnawagas in Egypt: A Narrative of what was seen and Accomplished by the Contingent of North American Indian Voyageurs who led the British Boat Expedition for the Relief of Khartoum up the Cataracts of the Nile【電子書籍】[ Louis Jackson ]

The Indians of Caughnawaga are an offshoot from the Mohawks, one of the divisions of the Six Nations, formerly in pseudo occupation of western New York, and known to the French by the general name of Iroquois. Long before the cession of this Province to Great Britain, they were settled at the head of the rapids of the St. Lawrence opposite Lachine, on a tract of land ten miles square, or 64,000 acres held in common, but lately separated into lots to be divided among the people as individual property. Contrary to what has been the too common fate of aborigines brought into close contact with foreigners, the Caughnawagas, with some mixture of white blood, have maintained throughout, their Indian customs, manners and language, with the manhood of their ancestors, in an alertness, strength and power of endurance where-ever these qualities have been required: in the boating or rafting on our larger rivers and the hardships of Voyageurs in the North-West.

Too Late For Gordon And Khartoum; The Testimony Of An Independent Eye-Witness Of The Heroic Efforts For Their Rescue And Relief [Illustrated Edition]【電子書籍】[ Alexander Macdonald F.R.G.S. ]

Includes 6 detailed plans and maps

Sudan was afire with flame and revolt in 1883 as the Islamic revolution headed by the self-proclaimed Mahdi gained followers and captured districts. The British government not wanting to be involved in the costly suppression of the rebellion ordered Egypt to abandon its administration of the Sudan in December 1883. The British government asked General Gordon, former Governor-General of Sudan, to go to Khartoum and aid in the evacuation of Egyptian soldiers, civilian employees and their families. Britain withdrew its troops from the Sudan until Khartoum was the last outpost remaining under British control.

Gordon differed with the British government’s decision to abandon the Sudan. He thought that the Islamic revolt had to be crushed for fear that it might eventually overwhelm Egypt. He based this on the Mahdi’s claim of dominion over all Islamic lands. Defying orders from the British government to withdraw, General Gordon, leading a garrison of 6,000 men, began the defence of Khartoum. On March 18, 1884, the Mahdist army laid siege to the city. The rebels stopped river traffic and cut the telegraph line to Cairo. Khartoum was cut off from resupply, which led to food shortages, but could still communicate with the outside world by using messengers. Under pressure from the public, in August 1884, the British government decided to reverse its policy and send a relief force to Khartoum. So the scene was set for the story of the epic, brave, but ultimately futile attempt to relieve Khartoum here related by the War Correspondent Alexander Macdonald who accompanied the British column.
