"Maid Marian" is a novella written by Thomas Love Peacock. It was Peacock's fourth major work of fiction and showcases his talent for combining humor, satire, and historical settings. Peacock began writing "Maid Marian" in 1818 while staying in Marlow. Despite initially finding the summer of that year uninspiring for intellectual pursuits, he soon found himself captivated by a flurry of imaginative ideas, including rivers, castles, forests, abbeys, and characters like monks, maids, kings, and banditti. Interestingly, the delay caused some readers to mistake "Maid Marian" as an imitation of Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe," even though Peacock's work was written before Scott's novel. Nevertheless, "Maid Marian" garnered success when it was adapted into a play by James Planch?, and it was also translated into French and German. Throughout the novella, Peacock's signature wit and satirical prowess shine through, making "Maid Marian" a delightful exploration of historical themes and social commentary.

"Nightmare Abbey" is a satirical Gothic novella written by Thomas Love Peacock and published in 1818. The story revolves around Christopher Glowry, a melancholic widower who lives with his son Scythrop in the isolated Nightmare Abbey. The novel satirizes the morbid themes, misanthropy, and philosophical systems prevalent in contemporary English literature, particularly Romanticism. The plot follows the eccentric and peculiar characters who visit Nightmare Abbey, including Mr. Hilary, Scythrop's flirtatious love interest Marionetta, and Celinda Toobad, who seeks refuge from an unwanted engagement. Complications arise when Scythrop finds himself torn between Marionetta and Celinda, unable to choose between them. The story takes a dramatic turn with the appearance of a ghostly figure and reports of haunting in the abbey. However, it is later revealed to be the result of Mr. Glowry's somnambulant steward. "Nightmare Abbey" stands as a significant work in the tradition of English satirical fiction. Peacock's sharp observations and astute critique of his contemporary society make it a valuable piece of literature that continues to be celebrated for its humor and social commentary.

Nightmare Abbey follows the fortunes of Christopher Glowry, Esquire, a morose widower who lives with his only son Scythrop in his semi-dilapidated family mansion Nightmare Abbey, which is situated on a strip of dry land between the sea and the fens in Lincolnshire. Scythrop is recovering from a love affair which ended badly when Mr Glowry and the young woman's father quarreled over terms and broke off the proposed match. With a penchant for melancholy, gothic mystery and abstruse Kantian metaphysics, Scythrop throws himself into a quixotic mission of reforming the world and regenerating the human species, and dreams up various schemes to achieve these ends. Most of these involve secret societies of Illuminati. However, he is constantly distracted from these projects by his dalliance with two women - the worldly and flirtatious Marionetta and the mysterious and intellectual Stella - and by the constant stream of visitors to the abbey.

Why is it so hard to speak pleasantly and create positive relationships?

What can we do to improve ourselves in these areas?

Rabbi Aryeh Goldman tackles these questions and more, sharing Torah-based insights in clear and relatable language. Throughout this carefully structured book, he is realistic and honest, as well as optimistic and encouraging, about the challenges that face us as we try to navigate the sticky but crucial realm of interpersonal relationships. He digs to the roots of these challenges and shows how we can strengthen our own inner characters and thereby build stronger relationships. As he writes, "To improve in a meaningful way, it is necessary to understand our whole inner being."

Rabbi Goldman shares many insights into human nature and behavior to help us in this task. He supports these insights by explaining the Torah values that guide us and by describing the models in our tradition that shed light on human relationships (such as the conflict between Yaakov Avinu and Esav as well as the way Aharon Hakohen famously helped people resolve their differences).
Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock Nightmare Abbey is an 1818 novella by Thomas Love Peacock which makes good-natured fun of contemporary literary trends.

Insofar as the novel may be said to have a plot, it follows the fortunes of Christopher Glowry, a morose widower who lives with his only son Scythrop in the isolated family mansion, Nightmare Abbey, in Lincolnshire. Mr Glowry's melancholy leads him to choose servants with long faces or dismal names such as Mattocks, Graves and Skellet.

The few visitors he welcomes to his home are mostly of a similar cast of mind, with the sole exception of his brother-in-law, Mr Hilary. The visitors engage in conversations, or occasionally monologues, which serve to highlight their eccentricities or obsessions.

Mr Glowry's son Scythrop is recovering from a love affair which ended badly. A failed author, he often retires to his own quarters in a tower to study. When he leaves them, he is distracted by the flirtatious Marionetta, who blows hot and cold on his affections.

A further complication arises when Celinda Toobad, fleeing from a forced engagement to an unknown suitor, appeals to Scythrop for shelter and he hides her in a secret room. The change in Scythrop's demeanour spurs on Marionetta to threaten to leave him forever, and he is forced to admit to himself that he is in love with both women and cannot choose between them.

There is a brief interruption to the usual round of life at the Abbey when the misanthropic poet, Mr Cypress, pays a farewell visit before going into exile. After his departure, there are reports of a ghost stalking the building, and the appearance of a ghastly figure in the library throws the guests into consternation. Only later is the apparition revealed to have been Mr Glowry's somnambulant steward Crow.

Nightmare Abbey Thomas Love Peacock - Nightmare Abbey is an 1818 novella by Thomas Love Peacock which makes good-natured fun of contemporary literary trends. Nightmare Abbey was Peacock's third long work of fiction to be published. It was written in late March and June 1818, and published in London in November of the same year. The novella was lightly revised by the author in 1837 for republication in Volume 57 of Bentley's Standard Novels. The book is Peacock's most well-liked and frequently-read work. The novel was a topical work of Gothic fiction in which the author satirised tendencies in contemporary English literature, in particular Romanticism's obsession with morbid subjects, misanthropy and transcendental philosophical systems. Most of its characters are based on historical figures whom Peacock wished to pillory. It has been observed that "the plots of Peacock's novels are mostly devices for bringing the persons together and the persons are merely the embodiment of whims and theories, or types of a class". Nightmare Abbey embodies the critique of a particular mentality and pillories the contemporary vogue for the macabre. To his friend Percy Bysshe Shelley, Peacock described the object of his novel as being "to bring to a sort of philosophical focus a few of the morbidities of modern literature". Appearing in the same year as Northanger Abbey, it similarly contrasts the product of the inflamed imagination, or what Peacock's Mr Hilary describes as the "conspiracy against cheerfulness", with the commonplace course of everyday life, with the aid of light-hearted ridicule. Several of the chapters take a dramatic form interspersed with stage directions in order to illustrate without comment how much the speakers characterise themselves through their conversation. The actor and director Anthony Sharp was eventually to take this approach to its logical conclusion and reduced the whole novel to a successful and popular script. First performed in February 1952, it was eventually published in 1971.

Headlong Hall Thomas Love Peacock - Headlong Hall is a novella by Thomas Love Peacock, first published in 1816. A humourous book that centers on a group of eccentric characters, each of which has an obession of sorts.Thomas Love Peacock was born on October 18th 1785 in Weymouth, Dorset. His education was never completed and mainly self-taught Thomas was made a clerk with Ludlow Fraser Company, merchants in the City of London in 1800. For Thomas life was work and the nurturing of his writing. When time allowed he would visit the Reading Room of the British Museum to study classic literature. In 1804 and 1806 he published two volumes of poetry, The Monks of St. Mark and Palmyra. By 1809 he has also published his great poem The Genius of the Thames. Peacock travelled to North Wales in January 1810 where he visited Maentwrog and met his future wife, Jane Gryffydh. By September 1815 had settled at Great Marlow and wrote Headlong Hall in 1815. It was published the following year. With this work Peacock found the true field for his literary gift in the satiric novel. Peacock continued to produce; the satirical novels Melincourt in 1817 and Nightmare Abbey in 1818. At the beginning of 1819, Peacock was summoned to London for probation with the East India Company. Peacock's test papers earned the commendation, "Nothing superfluous and nothing wanting." This career was to run alongside his literary one for several decades. Peacock married Jane Griffith or Gryffydh in 1820. They went on to have four children. In 1820 Peacock wrote The Four Ages of Poetry, which argued that poetry's relevance was being eclipsed by science, a claim which provoked Shelley's Defence of Poetry. In the winter of 18256 he wrote Paper Money Lyrics and other Poems "during the prevalence of an influenza to which the beautiful fabric of paper-credit is periodically subject." In 1829 he published The Misfortunes of Elphin, and in 1831 Crotchet Castle, the most mature and perhaps most appreciated of his works. By 1836 his official career was crowned by his appointment as Chief Examiner of Indian Correspondence. In about 1852 towards the end of Peacock's service in the India office, his taste for leisure and appetite for writing returned and with it his entertaining and scholarly Hor? Dramatic?. In 1860 came the publication of his last novel; Gryll Grange. Later, that same year he added the appendix of Shelley's letters, a matter of great literary importance. Thomas Love Peacock died at Lower Halliford, on 23rd January, 1866, from injuries sustained in a fire in attempting to save his library. He is buried in the new cemetery at Shepperton.

Nightmare Abbey is a novella by Thomas Love Peacock, first published in 1818, widely considered to be Peacock’s most enduringly popular work. The narrative centres on Christopher Glowry, a miserly widower, his son Scythrop and a host of dismal-sounding servants in his family pile, Nightmare Abbey. Recovering from an ill-fated love affair, Scythrop dreams up various schemes to reform and regenerate the human species, but misanthropy lurks around every corner, and everything changes when a mermaid is spotted and a strange woman appears in his chamber.

Although fundamentally a Gothic novel, and rich in allusion ? from Pope to Dante, Rossini to Mozart ? Nightmare Abbey is, at heart, a satire, as Peacock makes clear in the preface to a later edition, in which he describes the characters ? allusions to his friends ? as ‘status-quo-ites’, ‘morbid visionaries’, ‘romantic enthusiasts’ and ‘lovers of good dinners’.

A Nonviolent Theology of Love Peacefully Confessing the Apostles Creed【電子書籍】[ Sharon L. Baker Putt ]

The impetus behind the ease with which the church has periodically justified violent behavior lies in its conceptual image of God as a violent deity. This book emerges out of a passion to think differently--albeit biblically--about the character of God and articulates a theological construction of a nonviolent God--an alternative to any image of God that seems to condone human violence. It calls the church to rethink theology as something other than what might be termed "redemptive violence" and encourages Christians to reinterpret Scripture and traditional theological beliefs in ways that are more faithful to the God disclosed in Jesus of Nazareth.

Students of theology need a fresh glimpse of the love, mercy, and redemptive power of God through Jesus. As it follows the structure of the Apostles' Creed through the various theological topics, this book reminds Christians to share in God's desires for peace and love and to recommit themselves to the call of God to be "ministers of reconciliation" and lovers of both neighbors and enemies even while, at times, responding to violence with nonviolent resistance.
