In "Biography and Family Record of Lorenzo Snow," Eliza R. Snow offers an insightful exploration of the life and legacy of one of the most prominent leaders in the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book is woven with personal anecdotes, historical context, and spiritual reflections, reflecting not only Snow's dedication to her faith but also her literary prowess. Through a blend of narrative invocations and meticulous genealogical details, Snow constructs a rich tapestry that not only chronicles Lorenzo's life but also situates it within the broader tapestry of American religious history in the 19th century. The First Fifty Years of Relief Society Key Documents in Latter-day Saint Women's History【電子書籍】
|

This collection of original documents explores the largely unknown nineteenth-century history of the Relief Society, the women's organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Founded in 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois, the Relief Society was initially led by Emma Smith, wife of president Joseph Smith. The substantial minutes of the organization's proceedings from 1842 to 1844, published unabridged herein for the first time in print, document the women's priorities, contributions, and teachings. The Nauvoo Relief Society Minute Book also contains six sermons Joseph Smith delivered to the society, the only recorded words he directed exclusively to the women of the church.

The organization was suspended from 1845 until the mid-1850s, when attempts were made to organize the Relief Society on a congregational level in some areas of Utah Territory after the emigration of the Latter-day Saints to the American West. A more general and permanent reorganization began in 1867, under the leadership of Eliza R. Snow, and the Relief Society's roles within the church structure and within women's lives expanded over the succeeding decades.

The example of the Nauvoo Relief Society Minute Book helped create a record-keeping sensibility among Latter-day Saint women, who conscientiously created thousands of official and private records during the nineteenth century. The seventy-eight key documents in this collection include minutes of meetings, sermons by both women and men, annual reports from local Relief Societies, newspaper articles and editorials, political petitions and speeches, poetry, letters, journal entries, and reminiscences. They were produced not only near church headquarters but in far-flung settlements in the Mountain West and in areas as remote as Hawaii and England.

These records from the first fifty years of Relief Society give insight not only into the spiritual and ecclesiastical dimensions of Latter-day Saint women's lives but also into their political, temporal, and social pursuits. Relief Society women cared for their families and the poor. They manufactured and sold goods, worked as midwives and doctors, gave healing blessings, appointed and set apart Relief Society officers, stored grain, built assembly halls, fought for woman suffrage, founded a hospital, defended the practice of plural marriage, and started the church organizations for children and young women.

Prominent in the documents are the towering figures of Mormon women's history from this periodーEmma Smith, Eliza R. Snow, Sarah M. Kimball, Mary Isabella Horne, Emmeline B. Wells, Zina D. H. Young, and many others. In addition, some two thousand lesser-known Latter-day Saints appear in these records. Each document has been meticulously transcribed and is placed in historical context with an introduction and annotation. Taken together, the accounts featured here allow readers to study this founding period in Latter-day Saint women's history and to situate it within broader themes in nineteenth-century American religious history.

Former & Latter Rains Signs of Resounding Apostolic Revival【電子書籍】[ Dr. Victor T. Nyarko ]

God said, "I will pour out My Spirit, in the last days, upon all flesh." This, He began at Pentecost only as minor beginning. Before Christ's return, the Holy Spirit will precede in immanence, power, and glory to prepare the church because Christ isn't coming for a defeated church still struggling with sin and divisions, but a glorious church without spot nor wrinkle. The outpouring of God's spirit in this end times will depend on how desirous the church is for His presence. After the earth opens its mouth due to dryness and desire rain from God, former and latter rains of revival are the fulfillment of this desire. Isaiah 37:3b "..for the children are come to birth, and there is not strength to bring forth". May it never be said of today's church that we came close to birth and had no strength to deliver. Daoism, Meditation, and the Wonders of Serenity From the Latter Han Dynasty (25-220) to the Tang Dynasty (618-907)【電子書籍】[ Stephen Eskildsen ]
|

An overview of Daoist texts on passive meditation from the Latter Han through Tang periods.

Stephen Eskildsen offers an overview of Daoist religious texts from the Latter Han (25?220) through Tang (618?907) periods, exploring passive meditation methods and their anticipated effects. These methods entailed observing the processes that unfold spontaneously within mind and body, rather than actively manipulating them by means common in medieval Daoist religion such as visualization, invocations, and the swallowing of breath or saliva. Through the resulting deep serenity, it was claimed, one could attain profound insights, experience visions, feel surges of vital force, overcome thirst and hunger, be cured of ailments, ascend the heavens, and gain eternal life.

While the texts discussed follow the legacy of Warring States period Daoism such as the Laozi to a significant degree, they also draw upon medieval immortality methods and Buddhism. An understanding of the passive meditation literature provides important insights into the subsequent development of Neidan, or Internal Alchemy, meditation that emerged from the Song period onward.

The events which make up the first volume of the History of the Church moved forward from the back ground of successive dispensations of the Gospel which preceded the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. That volume covered the period from the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 1805, to the close of the year 1833, and included as its chief events: the birth of the Prophet; his first vision of the father and the Son; the coming forth of the Book of Mormon; the organization of the Church, April 6th, 1830; the mission to the Lamanites; the gathering of the people from the state of New York, first to Kirtland, Ohio, and subsequently the gathering of many of them to Jackson county, Missouri; the location of the site of the future city of Zion and its temple; the introduction of the doctrine of consecration and stewardship; the experience of the Elders of Israel in their movements back and forth between Kirtland and Zion; the spread of the work throughout the states of the American Union and Canada; the Prophet's own mission to the latter place; the founding of the first Church periodical, The Evening and Morning Star; the selection of a number of the revelations of God for publication under the title, "The Book of Commandments;" the establishment of the Mercantile and Literary firms of Zion and Kirtland; the laying of the corner stones of the Kirtland Temple; the planting of a number of settlements in Jackson county, Missouri; the awakening jealousy of the old settlers against the more progressive Saints; the fanning of these flames of jealousy by sectarian priests; the rise of that religio-political persecution which culminated in the terrible suffering of the Saintsーthe destruction of their printing establishment, the burning of their homes, their final expulsion from Jackson county; also the negotiations between the Saints and the civil authorities of the state of Missouri for reinstatement of the exiles upon their lands. The first volume closed with the narration of these circumstances of discouragement which befell the Saints in their efforts to establish Zion in Missouri.

Walking in the Sand: A History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ghana【電子書籍】[ Emmanuel Abu Kissi ]
|

When the priesthood was extended to blacks in 1978, faithful followers rejoiced and a new day dawned in Africa. Senior missionary couples soon arrived in Ghana, and within a year 400 people were baptized, many coming from congregations that were patterned after the Church and that had operated unofficially for more than a decade.

With Church growth came persecution. Rumors spread that both the organization and the missionaries were American spies. In June 1989, the Ghanaian government instituted an eighteen-month “Freeze,” forcing all Church activities to cease. The Freeze was lifted in 1991. The number of stakes has now multiplied, with a temple dedicated in 2004.

“Walking in the sand,” a Ghanaian expression meaning “alive and well,” aptly describes the Latter-day Saints in Ghana.

A Biography of False Prophet Warren Steed Jeffs and a History of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS)【電子書籍】[ Robert Alan King ]
|

A Biography of False Prophet Warren Steed Jeffs and a History of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) by Robert Alan King is a biography that examines Warren Jeffs and the history of the FLDS Church. It is a historical account of polygamy, adultery, and child molestation in the name of God.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) owns walled and fenced compounds across the United States and Canada complete with watchtowers in an effort to keep evil outsiders from entering and isolate their righteous followers within. Their supposed prophet Warren Steed Jeffs towers 6'3" with short brown hair and wide brown eyes often peering out from a pair of wire-rimmed glasses. Though Jeffs is now doing a life sentence in a Texas prison, he still controls the FLDS sect with approximately 10,000 followers and has at least 77 wives still under his control.
This book will tell the strange story of the FLDS by examining its original roots in the Mormon Church and then explain how it formed from the major faction of Mormon fundamentalists after the 1890 church manifesto that banned polygamy. We will examine the sect's growth and early years as it morphed from a priesthood council of seven men to a one-man prophet dictatorship. The three major splits within the faction will also be discussed.

At last we will travel along with the pedophile Warren Jeffs and witness his sexual perversion and lust for power as he takes away the innocence of young children and rips apart the families of his followers under the guise of ensuring salvation of his flock in the name of God. You will also be able to watch the inability of law enforcement to effectively lock Jeffs up for good until hoax phone calls from a woman in Colorado provides them with the break that finally uncovers the evidence they need to put him away in prison for the rest of his life.

Late Modernism and 'The English Intelligencer' On the Poetics of Community【電子書籍】[ Dr Alex Latter ]
|

Despite the brevity of its run and the diminutive size of its audience, The English Intelligencer is a key publication in the history of literary modernism in the British Isles. Emerging in the mid-1960s from a dissatisfaction with the prevailing norms of 'Betjeman's England', the young writers associated with it were catalysed by the example of Donald Allen's The New American Poetry as they sought to establish a revitalised modernist poetics.

Late Modernism and The English Intelligencer gives the first full account of the extraordinary history of this publication, bringing to light extensive new archival material to establish an authoritative contextualisation of its operation and its relationship with post-war British poetry. This material provides compelling new insights into the work of the Intelligencer poets themselves and, more broadly, the continued presence of an international poetic modernism as a vital force in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century.

Preserving the History of the Latter-day Saints【
|

The Lord Himself regards the preservation of church history as something of great value. From the earliest days of the church, he has directed church leaders to create and preserve a rich historical record.

Several Latter-day revelations speak to the subject of church history. In them the Lord clearly says that he wants "a record kept" (D&C 21:1) and that the record is to be kept "continually" (D&C 47:3). The record is to include "all things that transpire in Zion" (D&C 85:1) and is to chronicle the "manner of life" and the faith and works of the Latter-day Saints (D&C 85:2).

These carefully revealed details of the Lord's program for preserving church history show the importance he places on this history. So does the timing of the command to keep a record: it was given even before the Lord began to reveal the essential details of church organization, procedure, and doctrine.

The Latter-day Saints continue to be a record-keeping people. In fact, there may be no other people on earth of comparable size who have a richer record-keeping tradition than the people nicknamed Mormons. It is part of the church's administrative system, reaching from small committees to the church's general conferences and from new members to the most senior leaders. Because of this tradition, scholars can readily evaluate Latter-day Saint history from a wealth of primary documents.

This book is a compilation of presentations selected from the annual BYU Church History Symposium hosted by BYU Religious Education. This symposium brought together historians, scholars, educators, and authors to discuss the importance of record keeping and preserving the history of the Latter-day Saints.

Marlin K. Jensen, church historian and recorder, delivered the symposium's keynote address. Assistant church historian and recorder Richard E. Turley Jr. spoke on the significance of his predecessors in that office. Other scholars addressed relevant topics that ranged from the church's earliest efforts at record keeping to the challenging task of preserving its complex and increasingly global history.

Readers will find these papers filled with the experiences and adventures of many who have taken seriously the commission to preserve the history of the Latter-day Saints.

Table of Contents
Preface Richard E.
Addressing some of the most consquential yet esoteric subjects and events in Latter-day Saint Church history, this 1971 dissertation makes available items from early Mormon history never previously so thoroughly documented. Specifically, Dr. Larry C. Porter carefully delineates the dynamics of Joseph Smith's life and movement (and the subsequent movement of the Church) in the context of the infant years of the Church, an era whose documented treatment has been previously obscure and sketchy.

Thirsty Land into Springs of Water Negotiating a Place in Canada as Latter-day Saints【電子書籍】[ Brooke Kathleen Brassard ]

Looking at the example of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Thirsty Land into Springs of Water answers questions about Canadian and religious identities, immigration, and integration. Brooke Kathleen Brassard sheds light on the Latter-day Saint experience in southern Alberta between 1887 and 1947, revealing how the Latter-day Saints integrated into Canadian society while maintaining their "peculiar" identity through architecture, business practices, political participation, gendered roles, and family structures.

Drawing on family histories, correspondence, meeting minutes, and oral histories, Brassard explores how the Church negotiated the tension between integration and otherness. The book demonstrates how Latter-day Saints in southern Alberta embedded themselves in the social, economic, and political structures of Canada and how they adapted Mormonism to Canadian circumstances. It draws on the concept of "lived religion" and historical methodologies to reveal the complications that occur in the process of negotiation for members of a minority religion in Canada. Thirsty Land into Springs of Water ultimately illuminates the ways in which mainstream Canadian society forces newcomers to decide what they will adopt, reject, or adapt in order to belong.

The Life of John Taylor: Third President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints【電子書籍】[ Brigham Henry Roberts ]

The leading spirits whom the Prophet Joseph Smith gathered about him in his brief but glorious career, were remarkable men. Not remarkable for illustrious birth, for they were of humble origin; not for scholarly attainments, for such were the conditions of their early life that scholastic education of a very high order was out of the question: but they were remarkable for characterーthat mysterious something which exists independent of birth, education or fortune. It has become proverbial that all great movements, all reformations, all revolutions must produce their own leaders; and this is as true of the great work of the last days, the establishment of the Church of Christ on the earth, as it is of any other great movement. Leaders in established usages and institutions, political, social or religious, are very seldom converted to innovations. They usually consider it to their interest to oppose changes, especially those changes which from their very nature cast any shadow of doubt upon the correctness of existing customs or institutions with which they are connected. Hence it happened that the Jewish rabbis, the priests, the scribes, the members of the great Sanhedrinーleaders in their nationーdid not accept the doctrines of Messiah and become the chief apostles, seventies and elders of the new church. On the contrary, this class were the stubbornest opponents to the doctrines taught by the Son of God, and His most implacable enemies. It was the common people who heard Him gladly: and from their number He chose the apostles, who, through the God-given powers of the priesthood conferred upon them, shook the old systems of morals and religion from their foundations. Nor can it be doubted that the hand of the Lord is in this matter of choosing men to be His messengers, His prophets and His rulers. Many of them are chosen before they are born in the flesh. The messenger that was to prepare the way for the coming of the Son of God, John the Baptist, was so chosen. Jeremiah was ordained a prophet to the nations before he was born. Cyrus the Great, the war prince of Persia, was selected to be the deliverer of Israel from Babylonian bondage more than a century before his birth. Indeed, we are given to understand from the revelations of God, that from among the nobler class of spirits that dwell in His presence, the Father hath chosen those who are to be His rulers. From the very nature of things it must be necessary that men whose minds are unwarped by prevailing customs and traditions, should be selected to establish a new order of religion, of government or of society. How could the Jewish priests and rabbis, bound by long custom to a slavish adherence to the outward forms and ceremonies of the Mosaic ritual, the spirit and purpose of which had long been made of no effect by the rubbish of false traditions, open their minds to receive the larger and nobler doctrines of the gospel of Christ, unmixed with the pomp and circumstance which they of that age and nation considered essential to religion? Can men educated to an attachment for despotic government, and whose interests are bound up with its maintenance, be expected to look with favor on democratic principles, or become the champions of a republic?

Contingent Citizens Shifting Perceptions of Latter-day Saints in American Political Culture【

|

Contingent Citizens features fourteen essays that track changes in the ways Americans have perceived the Latter-day Saints since the 1830s. From presidential politics, to political violence, to the definition of marriage, to the meaning of sexual equalityーthe editors and contributors place Mormons in larger American histories of territorial expansion, religious mission, Constitutional interpretation, and state formation. These essays also show that the political support of the Latter-day Saints has proven, at critical junctures, valuable to other political groups. The willingness of Americans to accept Latter-day Saints as full participants in the United States political system has ranged over time and been impelled by political expediency, granting Mormons in the United States an ambiguous status, contingent on changing political needs and perceptions.

Contributors: Matthew C.
