The Book of Sam Putting Together a Spiritual Life Without a Lot of Belief【電子書籍】[ Peter D Snow ]

The author intentionally uses a cryptic style, to address the age old questions surrounding our existence as individuals. The book is intended for under 30’s. and in the first chapter, the writer dismisses our belief or non belief in God as hopelessly inadequate to our needs. The author poses the question, “Does God believe in you?” and referencing some biblical authorities dares to assert God thought you were a good idea in the first place and will not change His/Her mind. In other words, “We are beloved of God”. If this is God’s attitude then the social pressures and the opinion of others we live with are rendered moot. If this is the case, then the Divine is profoundly active in our world. Creation did not happen but is happening. What we do matters. This is the foundation of morality. The author goes one step further and suggests we are invited to be creators in little, to be responsible partners in the future.

The other eleven chapters unfold with some startling ideas that follow as a result of that idea of our origins. Experiencing ourselves as beloved of God, changes our response to the world of people. The author challenges normal religious assumptions by some outrageous assertions: We need an 11th Commandment, ‘Thou shalt not be a door mat’. Being a PNP, (professional nice person) in not our calling. Evil is a big deal. If the meek inherited the earth, they would neither want it, nor would they know what to do with it. Seeing others as God sees them is a continuing revelation, and that makes loving our neighbor more of an adventure than a duty.

These and other sentiments challenge traditional religious assumptions and force the reader to readjust our mostly medieval way of thinking to what we experience in the here and now. Guilt and shame have little place in the modern way of thinking, how then are we to be transformed? If truth and justice is all relative, then where does it leave any of us? So the author leads us to realize it is not what we think but what God does, and it is not what we know but who we know that matters. The author leaves us with a sense of a very imminent and active Divinity that seeks to be known, and can hardly wait for our invitation to be party to our lives.

My Family and Other Seedlings A Year on a Dorset Allotment【電子書籍】[ Lalage Snow ]

'A tender but substantive family memoir' Sunday Independent

'An acute eye and a lightness of touch ensures that this is never anything other than truly engrossing' The Field

A few years ago Lally Snow moved to a Dorset village with her husband and three small children, having spent over a decade as a war photographer, foreign correspondent and film maker living in Kabul. She covered the conflict there as well as other wars from Gaza to Eastern Ukraine, and Iraq.

In the late winter of 2021-22, Lally decided to rent an allotment, despite having only a rudimentary knowledge of gardening. She was starting from scratch and setting herself the dual challenge of growing an allotment at the same time as growing a family.

This is a heart-warming, wry and at times tearful account of Lally's travails as a mother and novice allotment holder, counterpointing horticultural progress with the perils of parenting. Along the way she reflects on the drudgery of English rural domesticity after a professional life chasing war and adventure, the history of the allotment since Saxon times, and the wonderful moment when gardening becomes fun rather than just feeding a family.

Lots of Snow Fell ? I Wrote Stories【電子書籍】[ Bonnie Burgeson ]

This is based on my Aunt Jennie’s diary from 1930-1931. She was a farm wife/writer in northern Minnesota as a newlywed. I have included the diary entries which are all in her words. Then I wrote stories and poems as I imagined Aunt Jennie might have written them. She was a writer for farm magazines, religious periodicals, even the New Yorker. There are rich details in her diary. She kept track of money they spent and money they earned from the products of their farm. She also was a nurse of sorts and was called to treat children and adults. She assisted with births as well. There is mention of many neighbors and her family members who lived four hours away. Many people in the area of Shevlin, Minnesota (which is west of Bemidji) would likely recognize names of the people my Aunt Jennie and Uncle Will Klinger associated with. I have received positive responses from readers pre-publication. They seem to connect with the diary, the stories and poems and come to care about the couple.?

Thunder Snow of Buffalo The October Surprise Storm【電子書籍】[ Don Purdy ]

The City of Buffalo, New York, is known for its snowy reputation, but the snowstorm of October 2006 was beyond unexpected.

It caught Buffalonians so off guard that it merits this book of true stories from citizens, including a foreword by Hall of Fame Coach Marv Levy and remarks from Mayor Byron Brown.

Don Purdy, a longtime executive with the Buffalo Bills, shares how he, his family, and the football organization overcame the surprise storm, which occurred Friday the 13th and remains the most destructive in Buffalo’s history. Over thirty players, coaches, and staff deliver their own fascinating memories, such as leaving their families behind without power or heat to travel to Detroit for a regular season game, along with never-before shared accounts of the inner workings of One Bills Drive and the National Football League.

Meteorologists from all three major local television networks reveal their personal and professional experiences, notably how the Storm happened and…how they missed it. Dozens of other prominent members of radio, police, medical, clergy, insurance, business, education, and Buffalo’s NHL Sabres hockey team vividly recall their reactions and subsequent decisions.

Co-Author Billy Klun delivers superb literary framing throughout and even takes the reader inside his then fourteen-year-old mind struggling to make sense of a landscape turned upside down over night. In the overwhelming aftermath, the city’s recovery efforts were boosted by a pair of highly inventive, altruistic volunteers determined to replant the 55,000 lost trees and provide the downed tree carcasses a proud second life ? Buffalo style.

In addition to the Bills organization’s quick-thinking and innovative operational adjustments, Thunder Snow of Buffalo offers plenty of humor and laughs, including rookie players from the South asking, “If this happens in October, what will the real winter months be like?”

London and May. What visions of gayety and beauty, of life and brightness, the conjunction of those two words brings before the mind! London in May, when, as it might almost seem, the first gleam of sunshine had called forth, from the essential nothing of obscurity, gay flutterers of a million colored hues, to spread their wings and float joyously in an atmosphere of hope. For, let who will speak of the balmy breezes and deep azure skies of the children of the South, there are some who would maintain that in the resurrection of the fashionable corners of England's great city from their winter sleep, in the sometimes keen wind that rouses the island spirit of opposition and braces the nerves of the idlers, even in the rapid changes that pass over the sky, there is more exhilaration, more strong incitement to courage and hope, than in the full flush of radiant summer which May often brings in climes held to be more highly favored by Nature. London, in May, when the streets are filled with gay equipages, whose prancing steeds seem to rejoice in the dignity of their position, taking a part in the great saturnalia of rank and fashionーwhen the dresses of the ladies are only eclipsed by the brilliancy of the shop-windows which they daily hauntーwhen the artist and musician bring forth their choicest wares to delight the senses and gratify the perceptions of the great and the little who throng busy London in this fairest season of the year. It was in London, then, and the month was May. So much being said, little more description is needful: like bold divers, we must leave the coast, and plunge at once into the great sea of humanity, drawing thence, it may be, a pearl which but for our efforts had remained there still. For all this humanity, which our vast London so fitly represents, is composed of individuals; each individual has a separate tale to tell, though all have not the voice to tell it; and in the tale of the hidden life there is sometimes a beauty and pathos, a dignity and wonder, that the dramatist and poet might do well to seize. But it is seldom that they are caught and transferred. Beside the hidden tragedies and heartrending emotions of the every-day life of humanity these transcripts are often pale and colorlessーa body that waits for the breath of life to kindle it into beauty. It was early in the afternoon of a bright May day. Even for that season London seemed unusually crowded. In Regent street the difficulty was to move forward at all, and in Pall Mall and the Strand matters were not much better. Woe to the unlucky foreigners or country cousins who found crossing the street an absolute necessity! They might have been seen generally at the most crowded spots, shivering on the brink of what for the moment was worse than the vague, shadowy Jordan of the pilgrims, and too often submitting ignominiously to the guidance of that being almost superhuman in his callous indifference to rattling wheels and horses' headsーthe policeman. But in and about a certain corner of Charing Cross the crowd seemed to culminate. To tell of the pedestrians of every shade and hue, the carriages, the omnibuses, which kept up a constant stream in this direction, would take volumes, for the Exhibition of the Royal Academy had only been open a week, and had not, therefore, lost the first charm of novelty. Thither many were hastening, mostly ladies of the fashionable class, gayly dressed in all the freshness of early summer coloring. But those who thronged to the Royal Academy on this May afternoon were not all of the fashionable class; there were besides some who went from a true love of art, a patient thirst for the beautifulーpale students, whose eyes had long grown used to dusky streets, and to whom the yearly vision of the something that always lies beyond was a revelation and a power; governesses and female artisans who had taken a holiday for the express purpose of enjoying the image of that which hard reality had denied to them.
