Networks, Labour and Migration among Indian Muslim Artisans【電子書籍】[ Thomas Chambers ]

Networks, Labour and Migration among Indian Muslim Artisans provides an ethnography of life, work and migration in a North Indian Muslim-dominated woodworking industry. It traces artisanal connections within the local context, during migration within India, and to the Gulf, examining how woodworkers utilise local and transnational networks, based on identity, religiosity, and affective circulations, to access resources, support and forms of mutuality. However, the book also illustrates how liberalisation, intensifying forms of marginalisation and incorporation into global production networks have led to spatial pressures, fragmentation of artisanal labour, and forms of enclavement that persist despite geographical mobility and connectedness.

By working across the dialectic of marginality and connectedness, Thomas Chambers thinks through these complexities and dualities by providing an ethnographic account that shares everyday life with artisans and others in the industry. Descriptive detail is intersected with spatial scales of ‘local’, ‘national’ and ‘international’, with the demands of supply chains and labour markets within India and abroad, with structural conditions, and with forms of change and continuity. Empirically, then, the book provides a detailed account of a specific locale, but also contributes to broader theoretical debates centring on theorisations of margins, borders, connections, networks, embeddedness, neoliberalism, subjectivities, and economic or social flux.

Praise for Networks, Labour and Migration among Indian Muslim Artisans

'a beautifully written ethnographic account...The attention to individual lives and the struggle to live a decent life is one of the book's most obvious strengths. In recent years, the bodily acts of craftwork and descriptions of manual skills have gained increasing attention within anthropological research. What has been missing from academic publications are individual stories of artisans in a small urban setting. This book renders craftworkers as central, rather than marginal, and thereby represents an important contribution.'
The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (JRAI)

'A revealing book. In addition to its usefulness as a critical survey of the theoretical and historical models currently in use to understand artisanship in contemporary India and elsewhere, and the ethnographic detail it offers of the Indian woodworking industry, by insisting on the local and the particular as its unit of analysis it offers a challenge to universalising accounts of the experience of contemporary South Asian artisans.'
The Journal of Modern Craft

'Chambers' research on how women’s labour is devalued and underpaid lays the ground for future researchers on how women offer care and strength to each other within patriarchal settings.'
moneycontrol.com

'Networks, Labour and Migration among Indian Muslim Artisans by Thomas Chambers is a substantial ethnography of Muslim artisan woodworkers in the northern Indian city of Saharanpur that admirably evokes the “human actuality” of their working worlds.'
ILR Review

Entrepreneurship in Indonesia From Artisan and Tourism to Technology-based Business Growth【

Whilst other countries in Asia particularly China and India have been studied in terms of entrepreneurial endeavours, there is a lack of research on Indonesia despite it being amongst the fastest growing economies in the world. Indonesia is also one of the largest recipients of venture capital in Asia. This book looks at the growth of entrepreneurship in Indonesia from artisan and cultural endeavours to an increased awareness of digital and technology-based forms of entrepreneurship.

The book examines the distinct cultural heritage of people in Indonesia towards entrepreneurial pursuits and analyses the role family and minority businesses play in the development of entrepreneurial capabilities. It stresses the need to focus on more categories of entrepreneurship in Indonesia such as artisan, tourism and sustainability in order to facilitate the growth of digital-based startups.

This book will be amongst the first to explore how Indonesia is leaping ahead of competitors in its quest to be a dominant world power through its entrepreneurial pursuits.

Perspectives on Work, Home, and Identity From Artisans in Telangana Conversations Around Craft【電子書籍】[ Chandan Bose ]

Providing an ethnographic account of the everyday life of a household of artisans in the Telangana state of southern India, Chandan Bose engages with craft practice beyond the material (in this case, the region's characteristic murals, narrative cloth scrolls, and ritual masks and figurines). In situating the voice of the artisans themselves as the central focus of study, simultaneous and juxtaposing histories of craft practice emerge, through which artisans assemble narratives about work, home, and identity through multiple lenses. These perspectives include: the language artisans use to articulate their experience of materials, materiality, and the physical process of making; the shared and collective memory of practitioners through which they recount the genealogy of the practice; the everyday life of the household and its kinship practices, given the integration of the studio-space and the home-space; the negotiations between practitioners and the nation-state over matters of patronage; and the capacities of artisans to both conform to and affect the practices of the neo-liberal market.

Icarus Triumphant An Examination of the Goddess Britomartis and her Forests Third Edition【電子書籍】[ Priscilla Rawiri-Steele ]

Collective amnesia foisted on us by social engineering on a century’s long scale, has meant the Minoans mysteriously disappeared from the world in the 2nd millennium BC, but they never left; their legacy is poetry, theatre, philosophy, democracy, charity, universities, the concept of love itself; the list is long. Herein, is contained ground breaking research about the murder of my ancestors, for the sake of an age old agenda of killing the Goddess Britomartis, and her beloved forests: it has taken approximately one and a half millennia to wipe out the Minoans as a cultural and people, and sadly, my lovely family was some of the last murdered. The loss of the Minoans and their forests is a crime against humanity on many levels, and in this book, I want to discuss the hitherto hidden killers, who have joyously perpetrated this ugliness, and still gloat over their crimes to this day. There can be no argument that my family was/is Minoan, for in their great ocean going ships, my family of Minoans, who lived at the end of the world, was/is the very finest group of mariners the world has ever known: my once vast family of which it was said “more numerous than the stars are Ngati Maru”, possessed a truly ancient and I prove, ubiquitous map of the world, by which they navigated, and that map must be the earliest known map of the world, the sixteen point star solar map belonging The Goddess Britomartis’ brother, the Sun God Apollo. This, the third edition, contains further research into the identity of my Pagan ancestors, and raises questions about the involvement in their murder, of those who founded the New Zealand Company; the freemasons and bankers and financiers.

From Artisan to Worker Guilds, the French State, and the Organization of Labor, 1776?1821【電子書籍】[ Michael P. Fitzsimmons ]

From Artisan to Worker examines the largely overlooked debate over the potential reestablishment of guilds that occurred from 1776 to 1821. The abolition of guilds in 1791 overturned an organization of labor that had been in place for centuries. The disorder that ensued - from concerns about the safety of the food supply to a general decline in the quality of goods - raised strong doubts about their abolition and sparked a debate both inside and outside of government that went on for decades. The issue of the reestablishment of guilds, however, subsequently became intertwined with the growing mechanization of production. Under the Napoleonic regime, the government considered several projects to restore guilds in a large-scale fashion, but the counterargument that guilds could impede mechanization prevailed. After Bonaparte's fall, the restored Bourbon dynasty was expected to reorganize guilds, but its sponsorship of an industrial exhibition in 1819 signaled its endorsement of mechanization, and after 1821 there were no further efforts to restore guilds during the Restoration.
