This is a comprehensive and unique history of the Minuteman ICBM program and related Cold War issues, focusing on missile silos in South Dakota. The history of the Cold War, focusing on the 1950s and 1960s, describes how nuclear systems developed, and the political climate and foreign policy decisions of Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy - and how these factors affected development of strategic missiles and nuclear armament systems. Chapter 2 provides a background on ICBM program beginnings and liquid-fuel ICBMs, placing the development of solid-fuel ICBMs into context. Chapter 3 discusses development and capabilities of both the Minuteman I and Minuteman II missile systems and provides an overview of the development of Minuteman III and the future generation of missile development. Section II -Life on the South Dakota Plains: Before, During, and After Minuteman presents the history of the Minuteman missile in South Dakota. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of the prehistory and history of the region discussing Native American history, land speculation and settlement, and continued agricultural uses. This background describes the landscape and environment prior to the establishment of 150 Minuteman I and II LFs and fifteen LCFs throughout the state. Chapters 2 to 5 deals with the development, construction, and activities of the missile sites in South Dakota from the 1960s through the 1980s when the sites were still active, with an emphasis on LCF Delta-01 and LF Delta-09. A history of the Air Force highlighting the Strategic Air Command and Ellsworth Air Force Base in Chapter 2 provides the background for a discussion of the 44th Strategic Missile Wing, which commanded the Minuteman sites in South Dakota. Chapter 3 provides the history of the location, land purchase, and construction of the Minuteman sites in South Dakota. Section II continues with a discussion of the day-to-day activities of the personnel assigned to the missile sites, including the training, roles, and responsibilities of the missile combat crew, facility manager, security and maintenance personnel, and the cook. Section II concludes by addressing changes in the roles, responsibilities, and personnel at the sites during the Minuteman's tenure, including the introduction of female missileers and addressing racial issues among personnel at the sites and within the greater community. Section III -Peace Movement, Nuclear Disarmament, and the Future returns to the national and international arenas discussing the opposition to nuclear armament, the end of the Cold War, and the future for Minuteman Missile National Historic Site.

Section I -The Cold War and National Armament * Chapter 1: The Cold War (1945-62) * Introduction * Origins of the Cold War * Eisenhower and Waging Peace * Sputnik * Kennedy Administration and the First Minuteman Deployment * Chapter 2: U.S. Strategic Missile and Armament Systems (1950s-60s) * Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Program Beginnings * Liquid-Fuel Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles: Atlas and Titan * Chapter 3: Minuteman and the Next Generation (1960s-present) * The Missile Gap and Minuteman * Development of Solid-Fuel Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles * Minuteman I * Minuteman II * Minuteman III and the Next Generation * Section II -Life on the South Dakota Plains: Before, During, and After Minuteman * Chapter 1: Life and Landscape Before Minuteman (to the 1960s) * South Dakota Plains Geological Formations * Native American Settlement * Early European Exploration and the Fur Trade * Euro-American Land Speculation, Settlement, and Immigration * Western Plains Settlement and Agricultural History * Chapter 2: U.S. Air Force, Strategic Air Command, and Ellsworth Air Force Base (1940s-90s) * Establishment * Strategic Air Command * Ellsworth Air Force Base * Chapter 3: Minuteman Missile Sites in South Dakota (1960s-80s) * Site Location * Land Purchase
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,057円

Minuteman A Technical History of the Missile That Defined American Nuclear Warfare【電子書籍】[ David K. Stumpf ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

In Minuteman: A Technical History of the Missile That Defined American Nuclear Warfare, David K. Stumpf demystifies the intercontinental ballistic missile program that was conceived at the end of the Eisenhower administration as a key component of the US nuclear strategy of massive retaliation. Although its nuclear warhead may have lacked power relative to that of the Titan II, the Minuteman more than made up for this in terms of numbers and readiness to launchーmaking it the ultimate ICBM.

Minuteman offers a fascinating look at the technological breakthroughs necessary to field this weapon system that has served as a powerful component of the strategic nuclear triad for more than half a century. With exacting detail, Stumpf examines the construction of launch and launch control facilities; innovations in solid propellant, lightweight inertial guidance systems, and lightweight reentry vehicle development; and key flight tests and operational flight programsーall while situating the Minuteman program in the context of world events. In doing so, the author reveals how the historic missile has adapted to changing defense strategiesーfrom counterforce to mutually assured destruction to sufficiency.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 4,268円

Bernard A. Schriever: Challenging the Unknown - Development of Ballistic Missiles and ICBMs, IRBMs, Atlas, Titan, Thor, Minuteman, Air Force Bombers, Nuclear Weapons, Sputnik Reaction【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this Air Force publication outlines the career of Air Force General Bernard Schriever, responsible for the development of America's intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Undoubtedly Bernard Schriever left his most prominent mark on the development of Air Force intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). When he became manager of the ICBM program in mid-1954, it had suffered through a checkered history marked by stop-and-go development, unrealistic requirements, divided authority, low priorities, and indecision whether the emphasis should be on ballistic missiles or winged missiles like the Snark and Navaho, essentially unpiloted aircraft.

Research in the ballistic missile field had begun immediately after World War II but soon fell victim to budgetary cuts that reduced it to dormancy. The program was resurrected in January 1951 as Project MX-1593, which led ultimately to the Atlas ICBM. In December 1952, a committee of the Air Force SAB headed by Dr. Clark B. Millikan recommended a phased approach that would not produce an operational missile until 1965.

In March 1953, Schriever learned of a scientific breakthrough that appeared to make intercontinental missiles technically feasible much sooner than the Millikan Committee thought possible. At a meeting of the SAB, Dr. Edward Teller, a leading advocate for the development of hydrogen weapons, reported on the successful test of a hydrogen bomb device in November 1952ーthe "Mike" shot. Dr. John von Neumann, head of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey, confirmed Teller's report and predicted that hydrogen warheads would be extremely light, with a high explosive yield. This news captured the attention of Schriever and Theodore Walkowicz, a retired Air Force officer. The two visited von Neumann and were convinced that the predicted new weapon, lighter and much more powerful than atomic warheads, promised to dispel one of the major obstacles in ICBM development. The missile could require less thrust because of its lighter warhead, and its trajectory could be less accurate because of the warhead's greater destructive power. Von Neumann believed a thermonuclear warhead weighing 1,500 pounds and yielding one megaton could be achieved by 1960. Schriever urged the SAB to formalize these findings and prevailed upon von Neumann, Teller, and other leading scientists to issue a report in June 1953 that confirmed the feasibility of such a lightweight, high-yield warhead.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 318円

Historical Overview of the Space and Missile Systems Center 1954-2003: Ballistic Missiles and Launch Vehicles, Atlas, Thor, Titan, EELV, Minuteman, Peacekeeper, MX, Delta, Satellites, MOL, Milstar【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this publication provides a historical overview of the Space and Missile Systems Center and its antecedents during approximately the first 50 years of their existence. The Center's organizational ancestors include the Western Development Division and the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division of the 1950s, Space Systems Division and Ballistic Systems Division of the 1960s, the Space and Missile Systems Organization of the 1960s and 1970s, and Space Division and the Ballistic Missile Office of the 1980s. This history describes the evolution of their mission and organizational structure, the history of base facilities, and the history of the principal space and missile programs managed by SMC and its predecessors. Although this essay touches on a few space programs managed by other agencies, its focus is institutional: it is about the work and infrastructure of SMC rather than other organizations, however worthy.

Chapter I: Mission and Organization * Chapter II: Facilities * Chapter III: Ballistic Missiles * Chapter IV: Launch Vehicles * Chapter V: Satellite Systems * Chapter VI: Air Force Satellite Control Network * Chapter VII: Other Programs * Chapter VIII: Increasing Reliance on Space Systems in Combat

SMC and its predecessors have been supported over the years by private sector organizations that have provided systems engineering for its programs and technical direction to its contractors. The first such organization was the Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation, chosen in 1954 to provide systems engineering and technical direction for WDD's missile programs. In 1958, Ramo-Wooldridge merged with Thompson Products to form Thompson-Ramo-Wooldridge (TRW). However, Congress expressed reservations about the propriety of a profit-making entity serving an agency of the government so closely and exclusively. In 1959, Congress recommended that a nonprofit agency be established as the systems engineering arm of the Air Force for space and missile programs. In June 1960, a nonprofit organizationーThe Aerospace Corporationーwas created at the initiative of the Secretary of the Air Force to perform that function. At that time, plans called for TRW to continue providing systems engineering for existing missile programs and for Aerospace to provide systems engineering for all space programs and for future missile programs. As it turned out, Aerospace did perform some work in the missile field, but it focused primarily on space, and TRW remained the primary source of systems engineering for missile programs.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 954円

On Alert: An Operational History of the United States Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Program, 1945-2011 - Atlas, Titan, Minuteman, Peacekeeper MX, Minuteman III, Nuclear Warhead【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

In today's world, it is difficult to fully grasp and appreciate the cultural and geopolitical climate that existed after the Allied victory in World War II. The rise of the Soviet Union, the lack of insight into actual military capabilities held by the Soviets, and the threat of nuclear annihilation were existential concerns for the United States leadership. Ensuring the nation's survival in this environmentーparticularly in the face of the war-weary mindset of the peopleーrequired tremendous wisdom and technical foresight. Developing a credible means to deliver a nuclear weapon to intercontinental distances on very short notice provided a powerful deterrent against aggression toward the United States. The men and women who eventually built these intercontinental-range rockets, as well as the ones who transformed nuclear weapons to be capable of launching on these rockets, deserve a key place in our nation's history. This book describes their struggles, both on the technical front and on the political front, as they pursued game-changing capabilities. From the early Atlas and Titan missiles to the Minuteman and Peacekeeper families of missiles, the prowess of our engineers and scientists was evident.

Chapter 1 - The Air Force Enters the Missile Age, 1945-1955 * The Air Force Shuns Ballistic Missiles * Ballistic Missiles Receive New Life * Eisenhower Faces the Threat of Surprise Attack * Trevor Gardner Energizes the Missile Program * Chapter 2 - Creating the Operational Atlas and Titan I First Generation ICBM Force, 1955-1965 * Establishing Force Levels * Developing and Testing the Atlas and Titan * The Development of Vandenberg (Cooke) Air Force Base * Atlas Operational Deployment: F. The goal of this effort was to develop a history and reference guide suitable for use in identifying and evaluating the historical significance of missile-related cultural resources. The authors have supplied the information necessary to locate, identify, and understand Army and Air Force guided missile facilities. This, coupled with evaluative guidelines currently being developed within DoD, will help cultural resources personnel make substantive evaluations.

Excerpt: The Development of the Defensive Missile Force - The primary responsibility for defending the United States against air attack rested with the Air Force. To accomplish this mission, the Air Force developed a defense-in-depth strategy that encompassed early warning radars, fighter aircraft, and long-range antiaircraft missiles positioned to detect and engage the enemy before they entered American airspace. If the enemy penetrated this outer layer, the last line of defense was the Army's antiaircraft missile batteries that defended key urban, industrial, and military targets. The long-range antiaircraft missile was the Air Force's BOMARC. Development began in 1946 but the first units were not deployed until 1959. BOMARC resembled a long, sleek fighter with sharply swept wings. The 45-foot missile was powered by ramjet engines and traveled at nearly four times the speed of sound. It had an effective range of 440 miles and could carry either a conventional or nuclear warhead. During the 1960s eight BOMARC missile squadrons were deployed along the eastern seaboard and in the midwest. The Army's contribution to the air defense network was the Nike antiaircraft missile system.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,057円

The United States Air Force and the Culture of Innovation, 1945-1965: Missiles, Space Vehicles, ICBMs, von Karman, Schriever, RAND, MITRE, Titan, Atlas, Minuteman, Sputnik Crisis【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

This exceptional work demonstrates in fine detail how the application of systems management by the United States Air Force to its ballistic missiles and computer programs not only produced critical new weapons, but also benefited American industry. Systems management harmonized the disparate goals of four interest groups. For the military it brought rapid technological progress; for scientists, new products; for engineers, dependability; and for managers, predictable cost. The process evolved, beginning shortly after the end of World War II, when Gen. Henry H. "Hap" Arnold directed that the Army Air Forces (later the U.S. Air Force) continue its wartime collaboration with the scientific community. This started as a voluntary association, with the establishment of the Scientific Advisory Board and Project RAND. At first represented by Gen. Bernard A. Schriever's ballistic missiles program, ARDC bypassed traditional organizational structures. Schriever's Western Development Division (WDD), located at Inglewood, California, made its case, based upon the Soviet Union's nuclear threat, to engage in the race to develop long-range ballistic missiles.
Ultimately, Schriever's new project management and weapons systems proceduresーconcurrencyーproduced a family of missile and space vehicles. However, in bypassing administrative red tape, this development also eliminated some necessary checks and balances that led to a series of flight test failures and cost overruns.

Topics and subjects covered include: ARDC, AMC, missiles, space vehicles, ICBMs, RAND, MITRE, Ramo-Wooldridge, computer control, General Hap Arnold, Dr. Theodore von Karman, Brig. General Donald L. Leading The Way: The History of Air Force Civil Engineers, 1907-2012 - Airfields, Red Horse, World War I and II, Special Projects, DEW Line, BMEWS, ICBM, Atlas, Titan, Minuteman, Air Force Academy【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

Professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction, this unique book provides a comprehensive history of U.S. Air Force civil engineers from 1907 through 2012. In 1941, Gen. Henry H. "Hap" Arnold said "Air bases are a determining factor in the success of air operations. The two-legged stool of men and planes would topple over without this equally important third leg." His prescient insight has not changed over the years. But bases don't just appear out of thin air, they have to be planned, built, operated, maintained, recovered and divested. That is the mission of Air Force Civil Engineers, who contribute to airpower by working behind the scenes to provide that "equally important third leg." From dirt airstrips to sophisticated cyberspace facilities, bases have transformed over time to reflect changing technology and threats. Air Force Civil Engineers have also changed their tools, equipment, vehicles, materials, and organizational framework to adapt over time. What has always been unwavering is the commitment of Engineers to the mission, hard work and excellence.

This year we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Prime BEEF program, the cornerstone of Air Force Civil Engineers' wartime mission since 1964. Encyclopedia of American Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) and Cold War Missile Weapons: Development and Operation, Atlas, Titan, Minuteman, Peacekeeper - Eight Official Histories【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

Eight official histories provide the complete story of America's ICBM forces in this massive ebook compilation: ICBM and Missile Summary (Space Primer Excerpt) * On Alert: An Operational History of the United States Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Program, 1945-2011 * The Development of Ballistic Missiles in the United States Air Force 1945-1960 * Inside the Cold War - A Cold Warrior's Reflections (ICBM Excerpt) * The United States Air Force and the Culture of Innovation, 1945-1965 (ICBM Excerpt) * An Examination of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Development Within the United States from 1952 to 1965 * The Missile Plains: Frontline of America's Cold War * To Defend and Deter: The Legacy of the United States Cold War Missile Program.

ICBM and Missile Summary (Space Primer Excerpt) - This compilation opens with a concise historical overview of the ICBM program.

On Alert: An Operational History of the United States Air Force Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Program, 1945-2011 - On Alert is a fascinating look at a period in our nation's history that is too often overlooked. The vital role the ICBM played in keeping the peace in the Cold War era is increasingly less understood by our populace. The careful documentation of the past and present contribution of the ICBM force to global deterrence will ensure the lessons of this period are not forgotten.

The Development of Ballistic Missiles in the United States Air Force 1945-1960 - Although the development of ballistic missiles is largely an administrative history, it is also the story of the herculean efforts of several key individuals. The effort could not have succeeded as it did without the fortuitous appearance on the scene of Trevor Gardner, Gen. Bernard A. Schriever, and Dr. John von Neumann. How these men conceptualized, promoted, and directed the program forms the basis of the story.

Inside the Cold War - A Cold Warrior's Reflections (ICBM Excerpt) - ICBM combat crew alert was yet another dimension of Cold Warrior dedication and performance. Though the concept of missiles was entirely new to SAC veterans, they adapted quickly to the ICBM weapon systems. Snark, Bomarc, Thor, Atlas, Titan, and Minuteman came into SAC operations as smoothly as new aircraft systems had come in over the years.

The United States Air Force and the Culture of Innovation, 1945-1965 (ICBM Excerpt) - Missiles, and particularly ballistic missiles, were disruptive to the Air Force's culture, operations, and organization in several important ways. First, and most obvious, missiles had no pilots so they relegated humans simply to getting the missile somewhere within range of the target and then pushing a button.

An Examination of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Development Within
the United States from 1952 to 1965 - Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) development by the United States from 1952 through 1965 is marked by extreme urgency. The initial impetus for the development did not proceed within military channels; this paper explores possible reasons why the military channels were not the originator of the program.

The Missile Plains: Frontline of America's Cold War - The story of the Minuteman missile program is a Cold War tale. Journalist Walter Lippmann's 1947 book, The Cold War, first used and popularized the term "cold war" to refer to the post-World War II confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union.

To Defend and Deter: The Legacy of the United States Cold War Missile Program - The so-called strategic missiles, which included intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and air-breathing strategic missiles (the predecessors of today's cruise missiles), were deterrent systems. In conjunction with the bombers of the Air Force's Strategic Air Command (SAC), the deterrent systems were intended to discourage an aggressor from attacking either the United States.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 2,010円

The 6555th Missile and Space Launches Through 1970, Post-War Legacy, Matador, Bomarc, Snark, Navaho, Thor, Atlas and Minuteman Ballistic Missile, Thor, Titan II and Gemini Program【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

The present work is a mosaic of the 6555th's history over the first two decades of its existence. It covers the golden age of Air Force missile and space launch vehicle flight tests at Cape Canaveral, and it ends shortly after the 6555th closed out its last ballistic missile flight test program (the MINUTEMAN III) in 1970. (The 6555th was redesignated a Group for the final time in April 1970, which is another reason to consider the year a watershed in the unit's history.) The 6555th's accomplishments since 1970 certainly deserve treatment as well, but their inclusion would have delayed the present monograph's publication by at least a year. Since the future of the 6555th over the next few years is uncertain, we decided in favor of early publication to give the 6555th more time to savor its history before its operations cease. The unit played a pivotal role in the development of missiles and space launch vehicles in the 1950s and 1960s, but, apart from semi-annual historical reports submitted by the 6555th, not one monograph or professional historical study had been written about the 6555th or its efforts at Cape Canaveral.

Preface * Chapter I - Foundations of the 6555th: The Post War Legacy * Section 1 - Post-War legacy Through 1949 * Section 2 - Activities at Holloman, Eglin and Patrick AFB, 1950-1951 * Chapter II - MATADOR and the Era of Winged Missiles * Section 1 - MATADOR Operations Through 1954 * Section 2 - MATADOR and MACE Operations 1955-1963 * Section 3 - LARK, BOMARC and SNARK Operations * Section 4 - The NAVAHO Program * Chapter III - The 6555th's Role in the Development of Ballistic Missiles * Section 1 - Ballistic Missile Test Organizations and Commanders * Section 2 - The Eastern Test Range in the 1950's * Section 3 - Ballistic Missile Test Objectives * Section 4 - The THOR Ballistic Missile Program * Section 5 - The ATLAS Ballistic Missile Program * Section 6 - The TITAN Ballistic Missile Program * Section 7 - Organization, Resources and Activities in the 1960's * Section 8 - The MINUTEMAN Ballistic Missile Development Program * Chapter IV - Taking the High Ground: The 6555th's Role in Space Through 1970 * Section 1 - U. S. Military Space Efforts Through 1960 * Section 2 - ATLAS, THOR and BLUE SCOUT Space Operations * Section 3 - The TITAN II/GEMINI Program * Section 4 - The TITAN III Program * Section 5 - Organizational Changes 1965-1970
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 1,057円

Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization to accomplish the goal. Management involves identifying the mission, objective, procedures, rules and the manipulation of the human capital of an enterprise to contribute to the success of the enterprise.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The presentation went very poorly. The bank’s president, Roger, said the campaign was garbage. Steve was shocked, and he didn’t know how to respond. He felt as though he had won the lottery five years before, but now he was certain he would be fired. #2 The meeting with the bank president left Steve feeling humiliated and angry. He realized that the real source of his failure was Rhonda, who had abandoned him. He decided to quit and seek employment elsewhere. #3 Steve told Cayla his sad story. He had developed budgets in the past, but he couldn’t tell the client what was appropriate for them. He was writing his resignation letter. #4 Self leadership is about taking responsibility for your own success. You must stop blaming others and look in the mirror at what you did or didn’t do to succeed.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。 500円
