The Spirit of St. Francis de Sales Enriched edition. Embracing the Divine Essence: A Journey into Spiritual Wisdom and Compassion【電子書籍】[ Jean-Pierre Camus ]
|

In "The Spirit of St. Francis de Sales," Jean-Pierre Camus presents a profound exploration of the life and spiritual legacy of one of Catholicism's most beloved saints. Written in the early 17th century, this work is characterized by its contemplative prose and deep theological insights, crafted in a manner that merges accessibility with profound intellectual rigor. Camus draws extensively from Salesian wisdom, offering readers insights into humility, love, and the cultivation of virtue, all while emphasizing the importance of a gentle yet resolute approach to spiritual growth in a tumultuous era marked by the Reformation and heightened religious tensions. A close companion of St. Francis de Sales and an influential figure in his own right, Jean-Pierre Camus was deeply imprinted by the saint's teachings and practices. This personal connection infuses the text with authenticity and warmth, as Camus aims to not only celebrate Sale's life but to further his mission of spiritual enlightenment through love and understanding. His position within the Catholic Church affords his reflections a unique pastoral quality, echoing the saint's vision of a faith integrated into daily life. Readers seeking to deepen their spiritual journey and immerse themselves in the wisdom of Salesian thought will find immense value in Camus's heartfelt work. It serves as both an introduction to St. Francis de Sales and an enduring guide for those navigating their own paths to holiness, making "The Spirit of St. Francis de Sales" an essential read for anyone interested in Christian mysticism and devotional literature. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - Handーpicked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

The impassioned correspondence between the Nobel Prize?winning author and the renowned Spanish-born French actress who appeared in his plays, tracing the extreme highs and lows of their all-consuming love affairーa bestseller in France, translated for the first time into English

Albert. Albert ch?ri. Write me sweet, passionate things. Tell me you love me and how you love me. Tell me you’ll take me to the sea one dayーany sea at allーand that we’ll spend time on the shore and in the water. Tell me you’ll always be with me. Tell me about you, and especially today, talk to me about us. ーMaria Casar?s to Albert Camus, February 1, 1950

It’s said that the affair began on June 6, 1944, the day the Allied forces landed in Normandy. The twenty-one-year-old Casar?s was starring in a production of the thirty-year-old Camus’s play The Misunderstandingーand one thing (an after-party hosted by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir) led to another.

Though their fling would be cut short by the end of the Occupationーand the return to Paris of Camus’s wife, Francineーthe two were destined to meet again: four years later, to the day, they crossed paths by chance on the Boulevard Saint-Germain.

Over the next twelve years, without interruptionーuntil the car wreck of January 4, 1960, that stole Camus’s lifeーthe author and actress would correspond furiously, their words swelling and shimmering and surging like the ocean.

Ah! It’s so hard to leave you, your dear face will again fade into the night, but I’ll find you once more in this ocean you love, at the time of evening when the sky takes on the color of your eyes. ーAlbert Camus to Maria Casar?s, June 1, 1949

Across 865 letters of immense and exquisite emotion, they cry and laugh and bicker and beg, make and break promises, talk Stendhal and Proust and Orwell, French theater, sickness, death, writer’s block, and, most of all, they pineーleaving behind a record of one of the great love stories of the twentieth century.

Resistance, Rebellion, and Death Essays【電子書籍】[ Albert Camus ]

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER ? Twenty-three political essays that focus on the victims of history, from the fallen maquis of the French Resistance to the casualties of the Cold War.

In the speech he gave upon accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957, Albert Camus said that a writer "cannot serve today those who make history; he must serve those who are subject to it."

Resistance, Rebellion and Death displays Camus' rigorous moral intelligence addressing issues that range from colonial warfare in Algeria to the social cancer of capital punishment. But this stirring book is above all a reflection on the problem of freedom, and, as such, belongs in the same tradition as the works that gave Camus his reputation as the conscience of our century: The Stranger, The Rebel, and The Myth of Sisyphus.

Create Dangerously The Power and Responsibility of the Artist【電子書籍】[ Albert Camus ]

A call to arms for artists, in particular those who came from an immigrant background, like he did. ? “To create today means to create dangerously. Every publication is a deliberate act, and that act makes us vulnerable to the passions of a century that forgives nothing.”

In 1957, Nobel Prize-winning philosopher Albert Camus gave a speech entitled "Create Dangerously." Camus understood the necessity of those making art as a part of civil society. A bold cry for artistic freedom and responsibility, his words today remain as timely as ever. In this new translation, Camus's message, available as a stand-alone little book for the first time, will resonate with a new generation of writers and artists.

Exile and the Kingdom Stories【電子書籍】[ Albert Camus ]

The stories of Exile and the Kingdom explore the dilemma of being an outsider - even in one's own country - and of allegiance. With intense power and lyricism, Camus evokes beautiful but harsh landscapes, whether the shimmering deserts of his native Algeria or the wild, mysterious jungles of Brazil.

Here a Frenchwoman is gradually seduced by the sheer difference of North Africa, a mutilated renegade is driven mad by the cruelty of his own people, and a barrel-maker watches the slow decline of his craft. A kindly teacher must choose between the law and a life, while a modest painter is out of his depth in the hypocrisy of the art world, and a French engineer discovers a new sense of belonging in a distant land.

Sartre's French Contemporaries and Enduring****Influences
This final volume examines Sartre's best-known philosophical contemporaries in France-Albert Camus, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Simone de Beauvoir-in terms of both their own philosophical insights and their relationship to Sartre's thought. The articles also offer some suggestive connections between Sartre's thought and subsequent developments in European philosophy, notably structuralism, poststructuralism, and postmodernism. The comparatively recent nature of much of this scholarship is solid testimony to the enduring influence of Sartrean existentialism.

Camus and the Challenge of Political Thought Between Despair and Hope【電子書籍】[ P. Hayden ]
|

Albert Camus was a formative artist, writer and public figure whose work defies conventional labels, and whose legacy is controversial but substantial. His distinctive contribution to modern ethical and political thought remains far from settled. Camus and the Challenge of Political Thought comprehensively yet concisely explores how Camus's compelling ideas of absurdity and rebellion emerged, how his complex political engagements and positions developed, and how his conception of an ethics of limits and measure retains a vital, contemporary resonance in an era of unsettling global politics. Drawing upon the full range of Camus's notebooks, novels, plays and philosophical essays, Hayden shows Camus to be an original political thinker of human dignity and freedom whose life and work sought to navigate between the twin dangers of idealistic optimism and nihilistic despair.

Cosmos and Camus Science Fiction Film and the Absurd【電子書籍】[ Shai Tubali ]
|

Over the last two decades, philosophers have been increasingly inclined to consider science fiction films as philosophical exercises that center on the nature of human consciousness and existence. Albert Camus’ philosophy of the absurd, however, has almost never been employed as a constructive perspective that can reveal unexplored aspects of these films. This is surprising, since science fiction films seem to be packed with visions and dialogues that echo the Sisyphean universe.

Cosmos and Camus endeavors to set foot in this uncharted terrain. Its first part introduces the main components of Camus’ absurdity so that it can be easily applied to the analysis of the films later. Equipped with these Camusean essentials, the book delves into an indepth analysis of two first-encounter films (Contact and Arrival) and two A.I. films (A.I. and Her). These analyses yield more than an insightful reflection of the absurd contents in science fiction film. Indeed, imaginative collisions with nonhumans seem to tell us a lot about the nature of the absurd in the human condition, as well as raising the question of whether absurdity is exclusively a human matter. Ultimately, the interpretation of the films illuminates the films themselves just as much as it illuminates, challenges, and expands Camus’ concept of absurdity.

Caligula and Three Other Plays【電子書籍】[ Albert Camus ]

Four thought-provoking masterworks for the theater by the Nobel Prize?winning author of The Stranger and The Plague, in a restorative new translation by Ryan Bloom that brings together, for the first time in English, Camus's final versions of the plays, along with deleted scenes and alternate lines of dialogue.

Though known for his novels that plumb the depths of absurdism, it was the theater stage that Camus called “one of the only places in the world I'm happy." After forming two troupes in his early twenties in Algeria, the prolific author moved to Paris for work, where between 1944-1949 he would go on to stage the four original plays gathered in this collection.

Caligula, his first full-length work for the stage, begins with the infamous Roman emperor in the throes of grief at the death of his sister Drusilla and tugs at the same essential question that haunts so much of Camus’s work: Faced with the nullifying force of time, which snuffs out even our grandest emotions, how does one go on living? And is there a limit to the hardness of the human heart?

Here too are The Misunderstanding, a murderous tangle of the longing for home and the longing for elsewhere; The Just, depicting the 1905 assassination of a Grand Duke in Moscow and testing the ethical limits of one’s belief in a political cause; and State of Emergency, an allegorical romp where The Plague itself appears as a central character, shedding new light on our current battles with viral disease and authoritarian regimes.

These are engaging, often incendiary works, now in fresh English translations that beg to be performed.

Dark Feelings, Grim Thoughts Experience and Reflection in Camus and Sartre【電子書籍】[ Robert C. Solomon ]
|

In the same spirit as his most recent book, Living With Nietzsche, and his earlier study In the Spirit of Hegel, Robert Solomon turns to the existential thinkers Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, in an attempt to get past the academic and political debates and focus on what is truly interesting and valuable about their philosophies. Solomon makes the case that--despite their very different responses to the political questions of their day--Camus and Sartre were both fundamentally moralists, and their philosophies cannot be understood apart from their deep ethical commitments. He focuses on Sartre's early, pre-1950 work, and on Camus's best known novels The Stranger, The Plague, and The Fall. Throughout Solomon makes the important point that their shared interest in phenomenology was much more important than their supposed affiliation with "existentialism." Solomon's reappraisal will be of interest to anyone who is still or ever has been fascinated by these eccentric but monumental figures.

Albert Camus and the Philosophy of the Ordinary【電子書籍】[ Raymond D. Boisvert ]
|

The standard interpretation keeps repeating that Camus is the prototypical “absurdist” thinker. Such a reading freezes Camus at the stage at which he wrote The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus. By taking seriously how (1) Camus was always searching and (2) the rest of his corpus, Albert Camus and the Philosophy of the Ordinary corrects the one-sided, and thus faulty, depiction of Camus as committed to a philosophy of absurdism. His guiding project, which he explicitly acknowledged, was an attempt to get beyond nihilism, the general dismissal of value and meaning in ordinary life. Tracing this project via Camus's works, Albert Camus and the Philosophy of the Ordinary*,* offers a new lens for thinking about the well-known author.

Archery Metaphor and Ritual in Early Confucian Texts【電子書籍】[ Rina Marie Camus ]
|

Archery Metaphor and Ritual in Early Confucian Texts explores the significance of archery as ritual practice and image source in classical Confucian texts. Archery was one of the six traditional arts of China, the foremost military skill, a tool for education, and above all, an important custom of the rulers and aristocrats of the early dynasties. Rina Marie Camus analyzes passages inspired by archery in the texts of the Analects, Mencius, and Xunzi in relation to the shifting social and historical conditions of the late Zhou dynasty, the troubled times of early followers of the ruist master Confucius. Camus posits that archery imagery is recurrent and touches on fundamental themes of literature; ritual archers in the Analects, sharp shooters in Mencius, and the fashioning of exquisite bows and arrows in Xunzi represent the gentleman, pursuit of ren, and self-cultivation. Furthermore, Camus argues that not only is archery an important Confucian metaphor, it also proves the cognitive value of literary metaphorsーmore than linguistic ornamentation, metaphoric utterances have features and resonances that disclose their speakers’ saliencies of thought.

Albert Camus as Philosopher and Political Thinker The Radicality of Modesty【電子書籍】[ Tommaso Visone ]

This book explores the role of modesty in the thought of Albert Camus.

Camusian modesty ? modestie ? affirms, against nihilism and absolutism, the necessity of taking care and putting passion into the relativity of human creation and recreation. The book shows how this care and passion spring from the necessity of a continually renewed tension between the self and the limits which transcend the self. From this standpoint, modesty is not a form of moderation; it goes to the root of human condition in face of the absurd. It is a radical attitude which engages human life in a daily struggle for meaning.

With modesty in mind, Camus reimagined the relation between meaning and absurdity, history and nature, self and other, nation state and continent, global north and south, and war and peace. In a world of arrogance, narcissism, and fear, Camus’ philosophical and political insights are fundamental in order to re-think and re-imagine our present.

Land and Freedom The MST, the Zapatistas and Peasant Alternatives to Neoliberalism【電子書籍】[ Leandro Vergara-Camus ]

The Zapatistas of Chiapas and the Landless Rural Workers' Movement (MST) of Brazil are often celebrated as shining examples in the global struggle against neoliberalism. But what have these movements achieved for their members in more than two decades of resistance and can any of these achievements realistically contribute to the rise of a viable alternative?

Through a perfect balance of grassroots testimonies, participative observation and consideration of key debates in development studies, agrarian political economy, historical sociology and critical political economy, Land and Freedom compares, for the first time, the Zapatista and MST movements.

Casting a spotlight on their resistance to globalizing market forces, Vergara-Camus gets to the heart of how these movements organize themselves and how territorial control, politicization and empowerment of their membership and the decommodification of social relations are key to understanding their radical development potential.

CLEARLY QUITE ABSURD Impressive Texts On A Strong Perception: Camus, Kafka, Kierkegaard, Unamuno, Borges, Cortazar And Others【電子書籍】[ Ulrich R. Rohmer ]
|

The book you are about to read is a collection of deep and controversial texts. They all deal with the strange phenomenon called absurdity. Life is not about logics following reasonable ways. It rather has absurd faces ? at least our perception tells us that story, and we have no difficulties to follow. Although we struggle: life is absurd? Really? Is there not a divine plan? Isn´t absurdity a sign of the absense of the divine? A sign of the devil? A satanic agenda?

This is the reason I put those texts together giving readers an easy access to material other thinkers share with us, for both, experience and perception of the absurd has moved humans at all times. The absurd is indeed an important topic in human´s life experience.

There is no real answer on the “why” of absurdity, if we are honest we do not know much about it. But we can read what humans have written and thought. That means listening to the voices of our ancestors: they often suffered from absurdity in life too. And by sharing their experiences in books and written witnesses they hoped their children had a better insight and perception ? and finally hope.

So go and read and look how your inner feelings and perceptions are affected, how some will get clear and some will fade away. You must give yourself time to “digest” what you have read. Go and read and think for yourself, always! You must find answers for yourself! May your journey lead you to deep joy and peace! Nothing else was my intention publishing this sourcebook.
