The Martian【電子書籍】[ George du Maurier ]

The Martian (1898) is a novel by George du Maurier. Published posthumously, du Maurier’s final novel is a semi-autobiographical account of his struggle with vision loss incorporating elements of fantasy and fairy tale fiction. Originally serialized in Harper’s Magazine, The Martian is a powerful story of romance, tragedy, and redemption. “When so great a man dies, it is generally found that a tangled growth of more or less contentious literature has already gathered round his name during his lifetime. He has been so written about, so talked about, so riddled with praise or blame, that, to those who have never seen him in the flesh, he has become almost a tradition, a mythーand one runs the risk of losing all clew to his real personality.” Barty Josselin is dead, leaving it up to his friend Robert Maurice to present a fair and accurate record of his life and achievements. After graduating from the Institution F. Brossard in Paris, Barty returns to his native England. As his vision begins to fail, causing him suicidal thoughts, he is visited in a dream by a female spirit from the planet Mars. With her guidance, he becomes a renowned writer. This edition of George du Maurier’s The Martian is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.

Cornovaglia, met? Ottocento. Enchanted Cornwall: My Pictorial Memoir【電子書籍】[ Daphne du Maurier ]

Completed shortly before her death in 1989, this is Daphne du Maurier's personal memoir, the story of how in Cornwall she found herself as a writer and as a person.

Illustrated with 78 colour and black-and-white photographs, including many from the author’s personal collection, this is the story of a magical relationship between an extraordinary woman and the spirit of a place. It will have special significance for millions who have enjoyed her books and want to know more about this very private author.

Here is the story of what led her to write Rebecca, which recentlywon the W H Smith Nation’s Favourite Book Competition ahead of novels by Dickens, Austen, Orwell and the Bront?s. Here is what moved Daphne to write My Cousin Rachel, made into one of 2017’s must-see movies, and what in her personal life led to Jamaica Inn, Frenchman’s Creek, The House on the Strand, The Birds and many other of her best-known stories, which have also been filmed.

Here is a book for all to enjoy: her readers, those who have enjoyed her films, and lovers of beauty and enchantment everywhere.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Daphne du Maurier was born in London in 1907, the second daughter of Sir Gerald and Lady Muriel du Maurier. He was the leading actor manager of the day, and Daphne grew up in a wildly imaginative Peter Pan world peopled by writers and actors, J M Barrie (known as Uncle Jim) included.

In 1926, at Barrie's suggestion, Daphne travelled with her mother and two sisters, Angela and Jeanne, to Fowey in Cornwall and her life was immediately transformed. The place and its people inspired her to write her first novel, The Loving Spirit, which so affected a young major in the Grenadier Guards, later Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning, that he travelled to Fowey in his boat, Ygdrasil (The Tree of Fate), to meet its author. They later married.

Numerous books followed, the most enduring being the Cornish works, including the multi-million selling Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek, The King's General, My Cousin Rachel, and The Birds.

Dame Daphne died on April 19, 1989, at home at Kilmarth, her house set high on the cliffs, near Par, in Cornwall.

Both in her novels and her memoirs, Daphne du Maurier revealed an ardent desire to explore her family's history. In Myself When Young, based on diaries she kept between 1920 and 1932, du Maurier probes her own past, beginning with her earliest memories and encompassing the publication of her first book and her marriage.
Pursued by the twin demons of drink and madness, Branwell Bronte created a private world that was indeed infernal. As a bold and gifted child, his promise seemed boundless to the three adoring sisters over whom his rule was complete. But as an adult, the precocious flame of genius distorted and burned low. With neither the strength nor the resources to counter rejection, unable to sell his paintings or publish his books, Branwell became a spectre in the Bronte story, in pathetic contrast with the astonishing achievements of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. This is the biography of the shadowy figure of the "unknown" Bronte.

"Miss du Maurier has brought to the art of the biography the narrative urgency which gives such animation to her storytelling."-New York Times Book Review
