The Clerical Proletariat and the Resurgence of Medieval English Poetry【電子書籍】[ Kathryn Kerby-Fulton ]
|

Despite the great literary achievements of Chaucer, Langland, and the Pearl Poet, Ricardian English books were still a niche market in 1400. As Kathryn Kerby-Fulton shows, however, their generation was transformational in nurturing the resurgence of English writing, in part as a result of the mass underemployment of clerks originally trained for the church but unable to find steady positions in it. Surviving instead as ecclesiastical or choral "piece workers," or in secular jobs in government or private households, this "clerical proletariat" lived and worked in liminal spaces between the ecclesiastical and lay world. And there the most enterprising found new materialーand new audiencesーfor poetry in English.

Since English book production in London prior to 1380 was rare, Kerby-Fulton's study begins in the prior century with great regional poets, revealing their early experimentation with a new poetics of vocational crisis. Preoccupied with underemployment, patronage, careerist ambition, alienation, and changing literary fashion, these thirteenth-century writers were choosing the more avant garde option of writing in English while feeling backwards to earlier tradition in works such as La?amon's Brut and The Owl and the Nightingale. These early experimenters invoked semi-remembered literary forms in a still evolving written vernacular, breaking ground for Ricardian writers, who turned to these conventions during the massive clerical unemployment of the Great Schism era. Kerby-Fulton's is the first study of Langland's legacy of articulating an authorial employment crisis, and its echoes in Hoccleve and Audelay. It also uses new tools for uncovering proletarian writers in unattributed Middle English works, including the famous Harley 2253 lyrics, the "York Realist's" Second Trial from the York Cycle, St. Erkenwald, and Wynnere and Wastour. Taking in proletarian themes, including class, meritocracy, the abuse of children ("Choristers' Lament"), the gig economy, precarity, and the breaking of intellectual elites (Book of Margery Kempe), The Clerical Proletariat and the Resurgence of Medieval English Poetry speaks to both past and present employment urgencies.

A Cultural History of Money in the Medieval Age【
|

Money provides a unique and illuminating perspective on the Middle Ages. In much of medieval Europe the central meaning of money was a prescribed unit of precious metal but in practice precious metal did not necessarily change hands and indeed coinage was very often in short supply. Money had economic, institutional, social, and cultural dimensions which developed the legacy of antiquity and set the scene for modern developments including the rise of capitalism and finance as well as a moralized discourse on the proper and improper uses of money. In its many forms - coin, metal, commodity, and concept - money played a central role in shaping the character of medieval society and, in turn, offers a vivid reflection of the distinctive features of medieval civilization.

Drawing upon a wealth of visual and textual sources, A Cultural History of Money in the Medieval Age presents essays that examine key cultural case studies of the period on the themes of technologies, ideas, ritual and religion, the everyday, art and representation, interpretation, and the issues of the age.

The Field of Blood The Battle for Aleppo and the Remaking of the Medieval Middle East【電子書籍】[ Nicholas Morton ]

|

A history of the 1119 Battle of the Field of Blood, which decisively halted the momentum gained during the First Crusade and decided the fate of the Crusader states

During the First Crusade, Frankish armies swept across the Middle East, capturing major cities and setting up the Crusader States in the Levant. A sustained Western conquest of the region appeared utterly inevitable. Why, then, did the crusades ultimately fail?

To answer this question, historian Nicholas Morton focuses on a period of bitter conflict between the Franks and their Turkish enemies, when both factions were locked in a struggle for supremacy over the city of Aleppo. For the Franks, Aleppo was key to securing dominance over the entire region. For the Turks, this was nothing less than a battle for survival -- without Aleppo they would have little hope of ever repelling the European invaders. This conflict came to a head at the Battle of the Field of Blood in 1199, and the face of the Middle East was forever changed.

Warfare and the Making of Early Medieval Italy (568?652)【電子書籍】[ Eduardo Fabbro ]
|

Devastated by two decades of war and ravaged by the spread of the plague, large parts of Italy fell quickly into the hands of a group known to history as the Lombards. By the early 570s the Lombards were firmly established in Italy, which they ruled without ever fully unifying it. The events of the late sixth century shaped early medieval Italy. They also affected how Italian history was written: the Lombards were blamed for plunging the peninsula into the darkness of the Middle Ages, finally ending Roman civilization. But was it really a ‘barbarian invasion’ that created medieval Italy? What was the role of the imperial authorities and the papacy? In Warfare and the Making of Early Medieval Italy, Eduardo Fabbro brings a new take on the changes that shook Italy at the end of the sixth century. Moving past traditional narratives of barbarians and battles, the book re-evaluates the impact of war in creating early medieval Italy. Fabbro brings to the fore a complex picture that includes not only invading barbarians but also rebelling soldiers, disgruntled farmers, vexed commanders, and cunning adventurers trying to make the best of a bad situation. Through a complete reassessment of contemporary and later sources, this book rewrites the history of the first decades of Lombard rule and shows that warfare’s impact went far beyond battles and invasions; it rewired the social and political links that bound the region.

The Magna Carta, a foundational document of English legal and political history, emerges as a pivotal charter that articulates the principles of justice, liberty, and the limitations of monarchical power. Written in 1215, its seminal clauses enshrine the rights of subjects against the crown, advocating for due process and the rule of law. The text exhibits a legalistic yet poetic style, reflecting the tumultuous socio-political climate of medieval England, where feudal grievances and struggles for power sparked revolutionary ideas about governance that resonate through the centuries. Although the author of The Magna Carta remains anonymous, the circumstances of its creation are steeped in historical significance. It was drafted during a period of significant unrest, prompted by King John of England's autocratic rule, heavy taxation, and conflicts with the nobility. The charter represents a collective voice of the barons, suggesting a conscious movement towards checks and balances in governance, influenced by earlier documents and the evolving notion of rights. This profound document is essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of legal principles and governance. Its enduring relevance offers a window into discussions of liberty and authority, making it a must-read for scholars, legal practitioners, and history enthusiasts alike.

A History of Medieval Political Thought 300?1450【電子書籍】[ Joseph Canning ]

|

First Published in 2005. The book covers four periods, each with a different focus. From 300 to 750 Canning examines Christian ideas of rulership. The often neglected centuries from 750 to 1050, the Carolingian period and its aftermath, are given special attention. From 1050 to 1290 the conflict between temporal and spiritual power and the revived legacy of antiquity comes to the fore. Finally in the period from 1290 to 1450, Canning focuses on the confrontation with political reality in ideas of church and state, and in juristic thought.

To Live Like a Moor Christian Perceptions of Muslim Identity in Medieval and Early Modern Spain【電子書籍】[ Olivia Remie Constable ]
|

What do clothing, bathing, or dining habits reveal about one's personal religious beliefs? Nothing, of course, unless such outward bodily concerns are perceived to hold some sort of spiritual significance. Such was the case in the multireligious world of medieval Spain, where the ways in which one dressed, washed, and fed the body were seen as potential indicators of religious affiliation. True faith might be a matter of the soul, but faith identity could also literally be worn on the sleeve or reinforced through performance of the most intimate functions of daily life.

The significance of these practices changed over time in the eyes of Christian warriors, priests, and common citizens who came to dominate all corners of the Iberian peninsula by the end of the fifteenth century. Certain "Moorish" fashions occasionally crossed over religious lines, while visits to a local bathhouse and indulgence in a wide range of exotic foods were frequently enjoyed by Muslims, Christians, and Jews alike. Yet at the end of the Middle Ages, attitudes hardened. With the fall of Granada, and the eventual forced baptism of all Spain's remaining Muslims, any perceived retention of traditional "Moorish" lifestyles might take on a sinister overtone of disloyalty and resistance. Distinctive clothing choices, hygienic practices, and culinary tastes could now lead to charges of secret allegiance to Islam. Repressive legislation, inquisitions, and ultimately mass deportations followed.

To Live Like a Moor traces the many shifts in Christian perceptions of Islam-associated ways of life which took place across the centuries between early Reconquista efforts of the eleventh century and the final expulsions of Spain's converted yet poorly assimilated Morisco population in the seventeenth. Using a wealth of social, legal, literary, and religious documentation in this, her last book, Olivia Remie Constable revealed the complexities and contradictions underlying a historically notorious transition from pluralism to intolerance.

The Life and Acts of St. Patrick The Miraculous Life of St. Patrick: A Medieval Hagiography【電子書籍】[ Jocelin ]

|

In "The Life and Acts of St. Patrick," Jocelin presents a hagiographic account that intricately weaves together history and legend surrounding one of Christianity's most significant saints. Written in the twelfth century, this narrative blends rhetorical flourish with vivid imagery, showcasing Jocelin's mastery of Latin prose. Its detailed exploration of St. Patrick'??s missionary endeavors in Ireland serves as both a spiritual testament and a socio-political commentary on the interplay between faith and cultural identity during the medieval period, emphasizing the Christianization of Ireland amidst pervasive paganism. Jocelin, a scholar deeply embedded in the scholastic tradition, likely drew inspiration from earlier texts and oral traditions that celebrated St. Patrick's legacy. His position within the Church and the burgeoning monastic culture of the time may have influenced his desire to promote the figure of St. Patrick as a bridge between pagan heritage and Christian devotion, thus affirming the Church's role in shaping national identity. This book is a recommended read for anyone interested in hagiography, medieval history, or the early Christian Church's influence on Irish culture. Jocelin'??s poignant depiction not only enriches our understanding of St. Patrick but also invites readers to reflect on the enduring significance of his legacy in shaping cultural and religious landscapes.
