|

This title was first published in 2002. When did Africa emerge as a continent in the European mind? This book aims to trace the origins of the idea of Africa and its evolution in Renaissance thought. Particular attention is given to the relationship between the process of acquiring knowledge through travel and exploration, and its representation within a discourse which also includes previously acquired cosmographical elements. Among the themes investigated are: How did the image of Africa evolve from the conception of a symbolic space to a Euclidean representation? How did the Renaissance rediscovery of Antiquity interact with the Portuguese discoveries along the African coast? And once Africa was circumnavigated, how was the inner landmass depicted in the absence of first-hand knowledge? Also, overall, in this whole process what was the interplay of myth and reality?

The Ontology, Psychology and Axiology of Habits (Habitus) in Medieval Philosophy【
|

This book features 20 essays that explore how Latin medieval philosophers and theologians from Anselm to Buridan conceived of habitus, as well as detailed studies of the use of the concept by Augustine and of the reception of the medieval doctrines of habitus in Su?rez and Descartes. Habitus are defined as stable dispositions to act or think in a certain way. This definition was passed down to the medieval thinkers from Aristotle and, to a lesser extent, Augustine, and played a key role in many of the philosophical and theological developments of the time.

Written by leading experts in medieval and modern philosophy, the book offers a historical overview that examines the topic in light of recent advances in medieval cognitive psychology and medieval moral theory. Coverage includes such topics as the metaphysics of the soul, the definition of virtue and vice, and the epistemology of self-knowledge. The book also contains an introduction that is the first attempt at a comprehensive survey of the nature and function of habitus in medieval thought.

The material will appeal to a wide audience of historians of philosophy and contemporary philosophers. It is relevant as much to the historian of ancient philosophy who wants to track the historical reception of Aristotelian ideas as it is to historians of modern philosophy who would like to study the progressive disappearance of the term “habitus” in the early modern period and the concepts that were substituted for it. In addition, the volume will also be of interest to contemporary philosophers open to historical perspectives in order to renew current trends in cognitive psychology, virtue epistemology, and virtue ethics.

|

Roger Bacon's "The Mirror of Alchimy" serves as a critical exploration of the esoteric and philosophical underpinnings of alchemical practices in the 13th century. Written in a rich, didactic literary style, this text combines allegorical narratives with empirical observations, reflecting Bacon's keen interest in the synthesis of science and spirituality. The work not only elucidates the processes of transmutation and the search for the philosopher's stone but also engages with the broader metaphysical implications of alchemy within the medieval intellectual climate, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary inquiry. Roger Bacon, a Franciscan friar and an early advocate of the scientific method, drew inspiration from the works of Aristotle and Islamic philosophers, as well as his own extensive experiments. His desire to reconcile faith and reason is evident in this treatise, where he seeks to elevate alchemy from mere superstition to a disciplined art grounded in observation and logic. This pursuit was a reflection of his belief in the transformative power of knowledge, both for the individual and for society. "The Mirror of Alchimy" is essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of scientific thought, the interplay between mysticism and rationality, or the historical context of alchemy. Bacon's insights remain relevant today, challenging readers to reconsider the boundaries of science and spirituality in their own quest for enlightenment.

Lives of Fair and Gallant Ladies is a two-volume work by French historian and biographer Pierre de Bourdeille dealing with women and their position in the culture and society in medieval France. Bourdeille writes in a quaint conversational way, pouring forth his thoughts, observations or facts with the greatest frankness. His works give a picture of the general court-life of the time, with its unblushing and undisguised profligacy. There is not an homme illustre or a dame galante in all his gallery of portraits who has not engaged in sexual immorality; and yet the whole is narrated with the most complete unconsciousness that there is anything objectionable in their conduct.

Textual and Visual Representations of Power and Justice in Medieval France Manuscripts and Early Printed Books【
|

Thoroughly interdisciplinary in approach, this volume examines how concepts such as the exercising of power, the distribution of justice, and transgression against the law were treated in both textual and pictorial terms in works produced and circulated in medieval French manuscripts and early printed books. Analysing texts ranging from romances, political allegories, chivalric biographies, and catalogues of famous men and women, through saints’ lives, mystery plays and Books of Hours, to works of Roman, canon and customary law, these studies offer new insights into the diverse ways in which the language and imagery of politics and justice permeated French culture, particularly in the later Middle Ages. Organized around three closely related themes - the prince as a just ruler, the figure of the judge, and the role of the queen in relation to matters of justice - the issues addressed in these studies, such as what constitutes a just war, what treatment should be meted out to prisoners, what personal qualities are needed for the role of lawgiver, and what limits are placed on women’s participation in judicial processes, are ones that are still the subject of debate today. What the contributors show above all is the degree of political engagement on the part of writers and artists responsible for cultural production in this period. With their textual strategies of exemplification, allegorization, and satirical deprecation, and their visual strategies of hierarchical ordering, spatial organization and symbolic allusion, these figures aimed to show that the pen and paintbrush could aspire to being as mighty as the sword wielded by Lady Justice herself.

The Medieval Discovery of Nature【電子書籍】[ Steven A. Epstein ]

|

This book examines the relationship between humans and nature that evolved in medieval Europe over the course of a millennium. From the beginning, people lived in nature and discovered things about it. Ancient societies bequeathed to the Middle Ages both the Bible and a pagan conception of natural history. These conflicting legacies shaped medieval European ideas about the natural order and what economic, moral and biological lessons it might teach. This book analyzes five themes found in medieval views of nature ? grafting, breeding mules, original sin, property rights and disaster ? to understand what some medieval people found in nature and what their assumptions and beliefs kept them from seeing.
