The Colored Waiting Room Empowering the Original and the New Civil Rights Movements; Conversations Between an MLK Jr. Confidant and a Modern-Day Activist【電子書籍】[ Kevin Shird ]

Extraordinary conversations between a confidant of Martin Luther King Jr. and a modern-day activist lead to the game-changing realizations that a second-wave civil rights movement is unfolding and that we must embrace the lessons of the past to effect lasting change.

In 1966, Nelson Malden ran for public office in Montgomery, Alabama. He was the first African American to do so. Campaigning for him was his friend Martin Luther King Jr., who had organized protests and had written the speeches that would help criminalize racial segregation and discrimination from his seat in the Malden Brothers Barbershop.

In The Colored Waiting Room, modern-day activist Kevin Shird heads from his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland to Montgomery to meet eighty-four-year-old Nelson Malden and contextualize the significance of the killings of Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, and Trayvon Martin as well as the demonstrations in Charlottesville, Ferguson, Baltimore, and around the country. The result is a groundbreaking understanding of today's burgeoning second-wave civil rights movement and the urgent actions necessary for racial equality and change.

Here, Shird raises the profound question of whether blacks are still in a colored waiting room, biding their time and waiting for racial equality to be the norm. He also shares compelling personal realizations on the lost connection between African American youth and their ancestors' fight against slavery and Jim Crow laws, asking throughout this pivotal volume, how far can we go without knowing where we've come from?

Capturing the In-Between A Collection of Stories From Empowering Women About Navigating Here, There, and Everywhere In-Between【電子書籍】[ Cindy Urbanski ]

If you are anything like the authors of this collaborative book, you've got goals in life. You are highly-ambitious, and you aren't here to play small. In fact, you've been working on "getting there" -- achieving that goal, following that dream, finding that path -- your whole life, it seems. The old adage "it's not about the destination, it's about the journey" rings true, yet doesn't quite capture what you have experienced.

The complexity of experiencing what is happening now as you are simultaneously on your way to what is next is what these group of powerful women call "the in-between." We offer a collection of stories and experiences about how we have navigated the in-between that can, let's face it, feel like wading through a swamp. Slow and messy. In Capturing the In-Between, we lay it all out there, and even go so far as to claim that in life there really is only the in-between, so we better make the most of it!

President Trump, Inc. How Big Business and Neoliberalism Empower Populism and the Far-right【電子書籍】[ T. J. Coles ]

With Trump in the White House, big business has direct power in government. Trump has stacked his cabinet with former employees of investment banks, big oil and international corporations. Now that big business has its representatives in the cabinet, it no longer needs to indulge in expensive lobbying. Under Trump, corporations control US policy. How and why did this happen and what does it mean for the bulk of the population?

T. J. Coles presents the background to Trump's rise, tracing the history of economic neoliberalism. He shows what a 'liberal economy' means in practice: privatization of public resources, cutting 'red tape' for corporations and internationalizing volatile money markets. For ordinary working people, neoliberalism translates to ongoing falls in living standards, fewer protections for workers, spiralling housing costs and social cutbacks. As a consequence, many voters are turning their backs on mainstream politics, with some supporting far-right, populist parties, including the Trump faction of the Republican Party and UKIP in Britain ? despite the fact that these parties support the very policies that make ordinary people poorer.

President Trump, Inc. exposes the Trump hoax. Trump sold himself as a maverick, but in reality big business has been lobbying Congress for years to do what he campaigned for: tearing up the international TPP trade agreement, keeping out low-skilled immigrants whilst fast-tracking specific foreign workers, and helping repatriate corporations to the US. Trump's apparently personal agenda ? to Make America Great Again ? is actually big business's wish list.

Coles concludes on a positive note, offering tangible hope. Real change, he notes, doesn't come from the top-down. Millions of people all over the world are working at the local level to win power back from centralized elites for their communities. The first step in this process of true democratization is to understand what's really happening, and Coles' essential analysis provides a clear picture of the present reality.

Pimping the Welfare System Empowering Participants with Economic, Social, and Cultural Capital【電子書籍】[ Kerry C. Woodward ]

Based on ethnographic research in Contra Costa County, California (CCC), Pimping the Welfare System highlights a welfare program implemented after welfare reform that differed in significant ways from the predominant work first approach implemented by most welfare programs. The book argues that by imparting dominant economic, social, and cultural capital, CCC’s welfare program empowered participants and improved their quality of life and life chances. Successfully transmitting these types of capital, however, was dependent upon the discourses, practices, and pedagogy deployed by welfare workersーas well as the policies, practices, and resources of the welfare program. In particular, CCC’s welfare workers encouraged the acquisition and use of dominant capital (that which is desired by the labor market) by acknowledging and respecting the various types of capital welfare participants already had, and by encouraging participants to make strategic choices about deploying different types of capital. This book calls into question monolithic understandings of economic, social, and cultural capital and encourages a new conceptualization of capital that resists framing poor women as fundamentally “lacking.” In addition, it points to ways welfare administrators and welfare workers can develop more empowering programs even within the confines of federal, state, and local regulations.
