Going by the Moon and the Stars Stories of Two Russian Mennonite Women【電子書籍】[ Pamela E. Klassen ]

So, it was January the 18 and it was the middle of the night. And it was very, very cold. Snow was ー we went just about knee deep in snow ー And we went on the road going toward Posen, capital of Wartegau. And so we said, “Let’s take that direction.” Just going by the moon and the stars. (Katja Enns)

Going by the Moon and the Stars tells the stories of two Russian Mennonite women who emigrated to Canada after fleeing from the Soviet Union during World War II. Based on ethnographic interviews with the author the women recount, in their own words, their memories of their wartime struggle and flight, their resettlement in Canada and their journey into old age. Above all, they tell of the overwhelming importance of religion in their lives.

Through these remarkable stories Pamela Klassen challenges conventional understandings of religion. The women’s voices, intimate and powerful, testify to the importance of religion in the construction of personal history, as well as to its oppressive and liberating potential.

Going by the Moon and the Stars will be of great value to all those interested in the Mennonites and Mennonite history, religion, women’s studies, ethnic studies and life history.

A Time to be Born Memoir of a Canadian Mennonite【電子書籍】[ Peter Penner ]

Having a title that suggests that I was born to do something for three generations of Russlaender Mennonites is a bit crass, and yet that is what three testimonial contributors suggest, though unknown to one another. “Peter Penner's rich and varied life exemplifies bridge-building between the worlds of church and academy. Situated as he was on the physical ‘edge' of Mennonite communities for much of his career, his perspective on?their history and identity is full of insight. As pastor, teacher, scholar, and volunteer, he has brought a critical yet gentle and loving eye to a lifetime of service.” Marlene Epp, ?University of Waterloo Another, the late Paul Toews, Fresno, CA, historian, “This autobiography of Peter Penner is a vivid and powerful story of combining objective and dispassionate scholarly analysis with deep religious commitments.” A third, a non-Mennonite wrote: His research and exposition of the MB Mission to India “brought together the accumulated and finely honed scholarly skills, both historical and theological, that Peter Penner possessed.” Robert Eric Frykenberg, University of Wisconsin While this Memoir covers three generations, each of which has brought its different experiences, excitements, and decision-making, one constant has been the Mennonite faith and culture with which I was imbued in those first thirty years. What were those years like for me? Justina, herself the greatest of volunteers, has been my wife and companion for more than two generations. We have touched many lives, have seen many things, and have stories to tell.

Silence and Rage in Miriam Toews’s Mennonite Novels【電子書籍】[ Rita Dirks ]

This book focuses on six of Miriam Toews’s Mennonite novelsーSwing Low: A Life (2000), A Complicated Kindness (2004), Irma Voth (2011), All My Puny Sorrows (2014), Women Talking (2018), and Fight Night (2021)ー, so called because they portray fictional and autobiographical events, set in Mennonite communities in Canada, Mexico, and Bolivia. Rita Dirks argues that through the exploration of difficult subjects such as the physical and emotional abuse of teenaged girls, women, and children , Toews gives a voice to victims and survivors who are otherwise silenced in that sequestered culture. In addition, Dirks shows that in the Mennonite novels, Toews’s rage at the injustices experienced by her protagonists becomes a transformative art that gives a voice to all stories, especially those of women within authoritative patriarchal communities that openly proclaim pacifism.

Reading Mennonite Writing A Study in Minor Transnationalism【電子書籍】[ Robert Zacharias ]

Mennonite literature has long been viewed as an expression of community identity. However, scholars in Mennonite literary studies have urged a reconsideration of the field’s past and a reconceptualization of its future. This is exactly what Reading Mennonite Writing does.

Drawing on the transnational turn in literary studies, Robert Zacharias positions Mennonite literature in North America as “a mode of circulation and reading” rather than an expression of a distinct community. He tests this reframing with a series of methodological experiments that open new avenues of critical engagement with the field’s unique configuration of faith-based intercultural difference. These include cross-sectional readings in nonnarrative literary history; archival readings of transatlantic life writing; Canadian rewritings of Mexican film’s deployment of Mennonite theology as fantasy; an examination of the fetishistic structure of ethnicity as a “thing” that has enabled Mennonite identity to function in a post-identity age; and, finally, a tentative reinvestment in ideals of Mennonite community via the surprising routes of queerness and speculative fiction. In so doing, Zacharias reads Mennonite writing in North America as a useful case study in the shifting position of minor literatures in the wake of the transnational turn.

Theoretically sophisticated, this study of minor transnationalism will appeal to specialists in Mennonite literature and to scholars working in the broader field of transnational literary studies.

Mennonite in a Little Black Dress A Memoir of Going Home【電子書籍】[ Rhoda Janzen ]

A hilarious and moving memoirーin the spirit of Anne Lamott and Nora Ephronーabout a woman who returns home to her close-knit Mennonite family after a personal crisis

Not long after Rhoda Janzen turned forty, her world turned upside down. It was bad enough that her brilliant husband of fifteen years left her for Bob, a guy he met on Gay.com, but that same week a car accident left her with serious injuries. What was a gal to do? Rhoda packed her bags and went home. This wasn't just any home, though. This was a Mennonite home. While Rhoda had long ventured out on her own spiritual path, the conservative community welcomed her back with open arms and offbeat advice. (Rhoda's good-natured mother suggested she date her first cousinーhe owned a tractor, see.) It is in this safe place that Rhoda can come to terms with her failed marriage; her desire, as a young woman, to leave her sheltered world behind; and the choices that both freed and entrapped her.

Written with wry humor and huge personalityーand tackling faith, love, family, and agingーMennonite in a Little Black Dress is an immensely moving memoir of healing, certain to touch anyone who has ever had to look homeward in order to move ahead.

Articles of Faith of the Mennonite Church Church of Berne, Indiana【電子書籍】[ General Conference of the Mennonite Church of North America ]

Numerous requests were made that the General Conference publish revised Articles of Faith of the General Conference of the Mennonite Church of North America.

The following Committee on Confession of Faith was elected for this purpose by the General Conference: Rev. P. R. Aeschliman, Rev. W. S. Gottschall, Dr. J. H. Langenwalter, Dr. Rodolphe Petter and Rev. P. H. Richert. This committee proposed these Articles of Faith to the General Conferences of 1926 and 1929.

The General Conference of 1929 referred them to the congregations "for examination and eventual approval or rejection." Consequently the First Mennonite Church of Berne, Indiana, examined these Articles of Faith through a series of sermons preached by its pastor. This resulted in their unanimous approval by the church at its regular annual business meeting on Jan. 1, 1932.

These Articles of Faith are printed in their present form as approved of by the First Mennonite Church of Berne, Indiana, and by authority of the General Conference of the Mennonite Church of North America. May they be instrumental to establish our church in "The Faith which was once delivered unto the saints."

Ethics for Apocalyptic Times Theapoetics, Autotheory, and Mennonite Literature【電子書籍】[ Daniel Shank Cruz ]

Ethics for Apocalyptic Times is about the role literature can play in helping readers cope with our present-day crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the shift toward fascism in global politics. Using the lens of Mennonite literature and their own personal experience as a culturally Mennonite, queer, Latinx person, Daniel Shank Cruz investigates the age-old question of what literature’s role in society should be, and argues that when we read literature theapoetically, we can glean a relational ethic that teaches us how to act in our difficult times.

In this book, Cruz theorizes theapoeticsーa feminist reading strategy that reveals the Divine via literature based on lived experiencesーand extends the concept to show how it is queer, decolonial, and equally applicable to secular and religious discourse. Cruz’s analysis focuses on Mennonite literatureーincluding Sofia Samatar’s short story collection Tender and Miriam Toew’s novel Women Talkingーbut also examines a non-Mennonite text, Samuel R. Delany’s novel The Mad Man, alongside practices of haiku and tarot, to show how reading theapoetically is transferable to other literary traditions.

Weaving together close reading and personal narrative, this pathbreaking book makes a significant and original contribution to the field of Mennonite literary studies. Cruz’s arguments will also be appreciated by literary scholars interested in queer theory and the role of literature in society.

When Robert Graber entered the world into a Mennonite farm family, he was the boy his mother dreamed of having. However, his father never seemed excited about the arrival of a new son. Little Robert had no idea that his father’s reaction was only the beginning of what would become more than four decades of ill treatmentーnot just to him, but also to his mother and sister as they bravely faced hardships, fears, and rejection while living within their small, central Kansas religious community.

In a vivid retelling, Graber chronicles his personal experiences while growing up within a Mennonite family as his mother dedicated her life to raising her children to love the Lordーat the same time his father and religious community seemed unwilling to provide the same love and support. While detailing his loss of trust in those who should have been trusted, Graber shares insight into the physical and mental abuse he and his mother and sister endured, describes the events that led to their fears of losing their lives, and reveals how he eventually transformed into an advocate for young people.

Forged in Fire is the true story of the fears, rejections, and hardships faced by a Mennonite boy and his family living in a Kansas religious community.

Strangers At Home Amish and Mennonite Women in History【電子書籍】[ Kimberly D. Schmidt ]

“Uniformly sophisticated, interesting, and worthwhile” essays focusing on the often misunderstood experiences of Anabaptist women across 400 years (Agricultural History).

Equal parts sociology, religious history, and gender studies, this book explores the changing roles and issues surrounding Anabaptist women in communities ranging from sixteenth-century Europe to contemporary North America. Gathered under the overarching theme of the insider/outsider distinction, the essays discuss, among other topics:

? How womanhood was defined in early Anabaptist societies of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and how women served as central figures by convening meetings across class boundaries or becoming religious leaders ? How nineteenth-century Amish tightened the connections among the individual, the family, the household, and the community by linking them into a shared framework with the father figure at the helm ? The changing work world and domestic life of Mennonite women in the three decades following World War II ? The recent ascendency of antimodernism and plain dress among the Amish ? The special difficulties faced by scholars who try to apply a historical or sociological method to the very same cultural subgroups from which they derive.

The essays in this collection follow a fascinating journey through time and place to give voice to women who are often characterized as the “quiet in the land.” Their voices and their experiences demonstrate the power of religion to shape identity and social practice.

“Makes a major contribution to our understanding of Anabaptist history and the ongoing construction of Anabaptist identity.” ーMennonite Quarterly Review

“This work is significant both for its breadth . . . and for offering glimpses into the varieties of Mennonite and Amish life.” ーAnnals of Iowa

In Her Own Voice Childbirth Stories from Mennonite Women【

Winnipeg writer Katherine Martens interviewed 26 women from the Mennonite community in southern Manitoba, ranging in age from 22 to 88 years old. They had many different backgrounds, but they all had one important characteristic: all were mothers. In the course of these interviews, Martens was searching for answers to questions that affected her both as a Mennonite and as a woman. How did they feel when they learned of the pregnancy? How did they choose home or hospital birth? How did the traditions of the Mennonite culture affect them as wives and mothers? As they talked, many spoke about the joys and trials of giving birth, and they also told Martens stories about other parts of their lives. Some had escaped the Russian Revolution to emigrate to Canada; others spent their entire lives in rural Manitoba, part of the close-knit Mennonite community, running farms and bearing as many as 15 children. Younger women who had formally left the Mennonite church were still conscious of the impact of the beliefs and customs on their lives. Many women were surprised to be approached for an interview, insisting that they had "no stories to tell." One was visited in a dream by her dead husband, who told her to "leave that alone." Yet, in the privacy of their kitchens and parlours, over sociable cups of tea, many did share with Martens their private fears and joys about what was often seen as a rite of passage into responsible adulthood, and they recalled that childbirth could be a difficult and, at times, traumatic event, but it could also be a radiant and spiritual experience.

Menno Moto A Journey Across the Americas in Search of My Mennonite Identity【電子書籍】[ Cameron Dueck ]

On a motorcycle trip from Manitoba to southern Chile, Cameron Dueck seeks out isolated enclaves of Mennonitesーand himself.

“An engrossing account of an unusual adventure, beautifully written and full of much insight about the nature of identity in our ever-changing world, but also the constants that hold us together."ーAdam Shoalts, national best-seller author of Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada's Arctic and A History of Canada in 10 Maps

Across Latin America, from the plains of Mexico to the jungles of Paraguay, live a cloistered Germanic people. For nearly a century, they have kept their doors and their minds closed, separating their communities from a secular world they view as sinful.

The story of their search for religious and social independence began generations ago in Europe and led them, in the late 1800s, to Canada, where they enjoyed the freedoms they sought under the protection of a nascent government. Yet in the 1920s, when the country many still consider their motherland began to take shape as a nation and their separatism came under scrutiny, groups of Mennonites left for the promises of Latin America: unbroken land and new guarantees of freedom to create autonomous, ethnically pure colonies. There they live as if time stands stillーan isolation with dark consequences.

In this memoir of an eight-month, 45,000 kilometre motorcycle journey across the Americas, Mennonite writer Cameron Dueck searches for common ground within his cultural diaspora. From skirmishes with secular neighbours over water rights in Mexico, to a mass-rape scandal in Bolivia, to the Green Hell of Paraguay and the wheat fields of Argentina, Dueck follows his ancestors south, finding reasons to both love and loathe his cultureーand, in the process, finding himself.
