Marriage and Fertility Behaviour in Japan Economic Status and Value-Orientation【電子書籍】[ Nobutaka Fukuda ]

This monograph examines the influence of ideational and socio-economic factors on Japanese marriage and fertility behaviour. It also investigates the historical change in attitudes toward partnership and family in Japan, which, if current trends continue, can lead to population shrinkage and an asymmetrical age structure.

The author first details the differences between ideational and economic approaches. He examines these two behavioural models from a viewpoint of rational choice theory, which he then follows with a discussion on the influence of institutional contexts on matrimony and childbirth.

Next, the book considers salient features of Japanese marriage behaviour, including the relation between these patterns and changes in society and the influence of marriage on attitudes toward partnership and family relations. Coverage then goes on to explore the influence of ideational factors on fertility and analyse the impact of childbirth on couples' attitudes.

The author also investigates attitudinal changes between generations in Japan. He provides a theoretical review on the relation between socio-economic development and value-orientation as well as looks at the difference in attitudes from a viewpoint of cohorts and periods.

Overall, the book presents an authoritative, theoretical and empirical analysis using data from panel and repeated cross-sectional surveys. Throughout, the author clearly identifies the sources of his data as well as the methods used in his analysis.

A Pragmatist Orientation for the Social Sciences in Climate Policy How to Make Integrated Economic Assessments Serve Society【電子書籍】[ Martin Kowarsch ]

While economic and other social science expertise is indispensable for successful public policy-making regarding global climate change, social scientists face trade-offs between the scientific credibility, policy-relevance, and legitimacy of their policy advice. From a philosophical perspective, this book systematically addresses these trade-offs and other crucial challenges facing the integrated economic assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Based on John Dewey’s pragmatist philosophy and an analysis of the value-laden nature and reliability of climate change economics, the book develops a refined science-policy model and specific guidelines for these assessments of climate policy options. The core idea is to scientifically explore the various practical implications of alternative climate policy pathways in an interdisciplinary manner, together with diverse stakeholders. This could facilitate an iterative, deliberative public learning process concerning disputed policy issues. This volume makes novel contributions to three strands of the literature: (1) the philosophy of (social) science in policy; (2) the philosophy of economics; and (3) debates about the design of scientific assessments, including the continuous IPCC reform debate. This work is thus interesting for philosophers and other scholars reflecting on the science-policy interface, but also for assessment practitioners, climate policy-makers, and economists. The science-policy approach developed in this volume has already influenced the recent socio-economic IPCC assessment.

Outlander's Sassenachs Essays on Gender, Race, Orientation and the Other in the Novels and Television Series【

A time travel epic featuring history and romance, Outlander--unlike most adventure series--is aimed at women audiences. The kilted male characters, the female narrator, the fantastic period costumes are atypical of male-gendered television. Both the show and the novels on which it is based address issues most series shy away from, like breast feeding, abortion and birth control. Role reversals are common--the powerful Claire rescues her virginal husband Jamie from sexual abuse. When the villainous Black Jack Randall displays his genitals to the heroine Jenny, she laughs.

This collection of new essays examines Outlander as an exploration of what it means to be a capable 18th century woman and what it means in the modern world. As Claire explores different models of strength in both periods, Jamie comes to understand the nuances of male honor, power and alternative sexuality through the contrasting figures of Black Jack and Lord John. As the heroes negotiate the complications of marriage and life, they make discoveries about gender that resonate with modern audiences.

The Blind Need Not Apply A History of Overcoming Prejudice in the Orientation and Mobility Profession【

This book has been a work in progress. In the spring of 2000 I started this project and began to collect data and conduct interviews. I copied every article I could find in the Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness and its predecessors Outlook for the Blind and New Outlook for the Blind. I was fortunate to locate Blindness the annual publication of the American Association of Workers for the Blind. One of the greatest finds was the library at the American Foundation for the Blind. The library contains dozens of volumes related to orientation and mobility. Within two years I had amassed a considerable collection of resources. I began working through the materials and along the way prepared some papers for various conferences. A dramatic increase in administrative responsibilities, as well as the tyranny of meeting grant deadlines, diverted me from giving concentrated effort to this book. All that changed as I reduced my workload in order to devote almost all my efforts over the past nine months to this project.

Audience orientation in news stories A comparison between The Guardian and The Sun【電子書籍】[ Elisabeth Fritz ]

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Augsburg (Lehrstuhl f?r Englische Sprachwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: Every day new things happen. With modern technology, news can be distributed all over the world and faster than ever before. Additionally, the distribution of (and access to) news has become much cheaper. Consequently, the number of sources we can get information from has increased drastically throughout the last decades, as has the amount of information. In our modern information society, the mass media have come to play a decisive role. At the same time, it becomes more and more difficult to judge the reliability of the news. One of the oldest forms of mass media, which is still generally regarded as trustworthy, is the newspaper. When it comes to newspapers, people usually prefer one (or two) specific news〓papers to others. Every newspaper has its own specific image which includes some characteristics that it is generally known for. If all newspapers provided all the news there is and reported it in an objective manner, this would not make much sense. Indeed, with the amount of potential 'news' emerging every day and the restrictions of the medium, it is impossible to cover everything - the newspapers must choose what to include in their coverage and what not to. Similarly, it is an illusion to expect news to be reported completely objectively. One reason for this is that the medium language inherently conveys connotations and values, which makes a purely objective coverage simply impossible. But apart from this restriction, it is a well-known fact that newspapers all have their particular perspective from which they contemplate and present news. However, this is not solely the newspapers' choice. Since they are financially dependent on their readers who buy their issues, they have to do their best in order to meet their readerships' interests. Considering that every newspaper has its own typical kind of readership, it should be possible to identify the means they use and analyse how they adapt to this specific group. This paper will analyse one specific news story which was published in the course of a few days in two newspapers known to write for opposite types of readers. The aim is to show how news can be reported differently and how these differences can be explained in terms of an orientation towards different kinds of audiences. Before the actual analysis, however, the communicative context of newspaper discourse will be briefly contrasted to face-to-face discourse with special reference to the role of its audience.

Theory of Electric and Magnetic Orientation in Sharks and Rays Revisited Physical Principles, Biological Evidence, and Rebuttal of Misconceptions【電子書籍】[ Adrianus J. Kalmijn ]

The book describes the theory of electromagnetic orientation in sharks and rays. The theory evolved from studying the publications of Faraday, von Arx, and Longuett-Higgins. Sharks and rays can detect the earth’s magnetic field as well as the ambient electric fields, utilizing their electrosensory system, the Ampullae of Lorenzini. Dr. Kalmijn provides the physical description of this sensory system in the context of his previously published behavioral studies performed in the laboratory and in natural, open-ocean settings. The book lays bare the physics bedrock of the motional electric fields.

The physics of the entire sensory environment interacting with these very sensitive organs is made clear step by step so the reader can understand the source of the fields and how the animals detect them. Dr. Kalmijn analyzes the sensory organs from the perspective of the animal moving through these electric and magnetic fields to arrive at the appropriate relativistic frame to understand how the sensory system works. Relying on his thorough understanding of Maxwell, Faraday, and Einstein, he has sought to understand the miraculous abilities of Elasmobranchs.

The detailed presentation clears away many of the misunderstandings and mistakes of previous researchers. Nearly all the mistakes pertain to the underlying physics. The existing literature is discussed, put in context, and corrected.

This summary and final presentation of Dr. Kalmijn’s life-time study of electromagnetic reception in Elasmobranchs will surely be recognized as the definitive treatise in years to come. It gives researchers and students in biology, physics, oceanography, and fisheries a detailed mathematical physics background for the understanding of electroreception in Elasmobranch fishes.

Molecular Orientation and Emission Characteristics of Ir Complexes and Exciplex in Organic Thin Films【電子書籍】[ Chang-Ki Moon ]

This thesis considers molecular orientation in thin films and introduces an optical model describing this orientation as applied to organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). It also describes the electronic structure of intermolecular charge transfer excitons correlated to molecular orientation in solids.

It has long been known that molecular orientation influences the electrical and optical properties of molecular films. One notable example is in liquid crystals where rigid rod or disk shaped molecules are commonly used. Understanding the origin of the molecular orientation and its control by surface treatment and electric field resulted in the development of liquid crystal displays. The same thing has happened in organic electronics, and considerable effort has been devoted to understanding and controlling molecular orientation in solid films to improve charge carrier mobility and light absorption, ultimately to improve the performance of organic solar cells and thin film transistors.

In contrast, less attention has been paid to molecular orientation and its influence on the characteristics of OLEDs, probably because of the use of amorphous films rather than micro-crystalline films, and it is only in recent years that some molecular films are known to have preferred orientation. This thesis addresses this topic, focusing on OLEDs, describing the origin and control of the orientation of phosphorescent Ir complexes possessing spherical shape rather than rod or disk shape, the simulation of the optical characteristics of OLEDs influenced by preferred molecular orientation, and finally the orientation of intermolecular charge transfer excitons and its correlation to electronic structures in thin films.
