Yeah, yeah, I know Cheryl Pula's book series involves the brave young heroes of the Eighth Air Force Heavy Bomber Squadrons but these three volumes are so marvelously researched that I'm able to get such a "feel" for World War II and a taste of what it must've been like to be a part of a B-17 combat crew in England that Walter Winchell's memorable phrase from back then popped into my head.＜br /＞ I recently finished Pula's third volume, "The Rookie", and had the urge to review. So here goes!＜br /＞ Once again, book three of Pula's series resumes the experiences of the men of the PRETTY BABY, a B-17 heavy bomber from the 91st Bombardment Group (Heavy) engaged in routine, and often deadly, daring daylight bombing raids into Axis territory in Europe from Bassingbourn, England during 1943. This volume covers the events from July 15 to September 19, 1943 and the book begins by resolving the cliffhanger from book two: Did the FULL HOUSE's new rookie Bombardier, Jesse Nowakowski, succeed in completing his bomb run as Lead Bombardier on his very first combat mission with his crew? Well, I'm not gonna tell! You'll have to read it yourself and find out.＜br /＞ As was unfortunately the case with piloting a B-17 into enemy territory, the FULL HOUSE soon encounters flak and German fighters and young Jesse Nowakowski quickly finds himself in a true "trial by fire" while still on his very first mission as part of the FULL HOUSE crew and his was the LEAD plane on the mission. Pula ramps up the action and drama ... don't forget, ALL of these incidents actually happened to real B-17 crews during the war. Cheryl continues to create the feeling that we are there with these brave WWII bomber crews. The vivid descriptions of combat and the emotions that go with it are riveting. It is hard to remember that the average age of a crew member was under 24 years of age, and that the average life expectancy of a B-17 bomber crew was no more than six missions. And yet, knowing this, these brave young men flew daylight missions, knowing that the odds were against them, but they knew what their duty was, and they did it. Readers come to love these characters and root for their survival.＜br /＞ BOOK REVIEW: A WING AND A PRAYER is the fourth book in Cheryl Pula's Eighth Air Force Series and I found it just as enjoyable as previous three volumes. For those unfamiliar with the series, Pula's focus is on the very real and very young American heroes of the Eighth Air Force, 91st Bombardment Group (Heavy) based at Bassingbourn England.＜/p＞＜p＞While the English pulled off night time bombing during WWII, Pula's series looks at the Americans who flew the iconic B-17 Heavy Bombers on regular suicidal DAYLIGHT bombing missions right into the heart of Axis territory during WWII. Missions where the odds were often doubtful that the men would ever make it back home. Yes, they often dealt the Germans a good shellacking but always at a deadly cost. Pula did YEARS of thorough research and was fortunate enough to be able to interview surviving airmen who performed those amazing missions on the B-17s so long ago. Yes. Pula's characters may be fictional but the missions and what happened most certainly AREN'T.＜/p＞＜p＞Book Four of Pula's series continues the lives and missions of the airmen of the B-17, "Full House". She keeps with the tradition of her earlier books by resolving the previous volume's cliffhanger. A WING AND A PRAYER picks up the action in September 1943 as First Lieutenant Matthew Moore, the half Native-American co-pilot of the B-17 bomber , "Full House" struggles in a US Military Hospital in London to recover from near fatal wounds he suffered in July while on a deadly mission bombing ordnance factories in Ocherslaben, Germany.＜/p＞＜p＞The early part of this book details Matt's battle to recover from wounds he feared would cripple him. His commander and best friend on FULL HOUSE, Major Jack Harrington, manages to rebuild his crew and get his plane air worthy again. As expected, the war continues and the death toll climbs. Does Matt recover? Who gets to command a new crew and a new B-17 called SECOND CHANCE? Read this book and find out!＜/p＞＜p＞While Pula begins her books by resolving a cliffhanger, she also ends the books with a cliffhanger as the FULL HOUSE endures a brutal mission and tries to return home with its tail section nearly blown off. Yes, the crew makes it home but it's a fantastic piece of battle writing and it's all TRUE as such an incident really did happen to a B-17. The book ends with FULL HOUSE's young bombardier, Jesse Nowakowski, a Medal of Honor recipient, trying to save a child while the Germans bomb London. Yes, I plan to start reading book five soon!＜/p＞＜p＞The heroes who flew bombing missions on B-17s have been a neglected part of WWII history and Pula does a fine job saluting the brave men who were there. While I found the battle sequences gripping and I've learned more about B-17s in these four books than I ever thought possible, the romantic/dramatic portions come across as a little "forced" hence my four star only rating. This is still a great book and I recommend it to all looking for a good piece of historical fiction. We were surprised at the prejudice shown during this period in our history. Matt being part American Indian kept him from being treated fairly. Hopefully, this would not happen today. We were amazed at the hardships endured by our very young troops and the amount of spunk they showed in overcoming them. For boys so young this was amazing.＜br /＞ The bravery shown by these young men was also amazing. The hardships of being on their own away from family and friends hit us. Also, the intelligence and bravery was outstanding. The fortitude shown by our nation during this trying time was heartwarming.＜br /＞ The steady nerves of those brave young men in the face of the horrors of war - seeing your friends blown to pieces in front of you and still being able to carry out your mission left us spellbound.＜br /＞ ByTomon＜br /＞ Cheryl Pula created a very entertaining account of the boys who eventually became the men of the B-17 crews. I took my father-in-law to a presentation that the author gave at a public library. Even though he was a B-24 pilot, he found the presentation accurate and interesting, which led me to get the book for him as a gift. However, I started reading it first and found myself reluctant to put it down. I attached myself to the characters, their personal lives, and their adventures from training to battle. The bomber crews were certainly courageous.＜br /＞ I can't wait to start the 2nd book on the Ragged Irregulars of the Eighth＜/p＞＜p＞5Amazing!＜br /＞ ByMatthew Lynchon＜br /＞ This book is amazing! I usually do not like to read about history or war stories. This book captivated me from the first page. I couldn't put it down. When I got to the end I was sad and now I can't wait for the next one. It's actually possible for a woman to write a marvelously researched and thoroughly engrossing story set during the early years of the Eighth Air Force's B-17 bombing campaign in Europe at the height of World War II. Pula's first book in this series begins in early 1942 as the future pilot and co-pilot of the B-17 "Full House", Jack Harrington and Matt Moore, meet during their intensive Heavy Bomber Training at Kearny Army Airfield, in Kearny Nebraska, and become best friends.＜/p＞＜p＞The book takes the reader, along with Jack and Matt, by B-17, to England, where they meet the rest of the brave and very young men who will be serving as the ten man crew of the "Full House". After their months of intensive training, the novice crew of the "Full House" must prove themselves worthy to be part of a daring daylight bombing campaign which, before their arrival, had been suffering an 80% casualty rate. Who lives? Who dies? Read the book and find out!＜/p＞＜p＞I had the pleasure of reading an earlier version of this book, several years ago, and I enjoyed it back then. Pula's research is extensive and it shows throughout the book as we get to experience the shameful racism still evident in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII and learn about the phenomenal amount of work involved to train and equip a B-17 bomber crew of ten men, all of whom were under the age of twenty-five. The events depicted in this are true and happened to people interviewed by Pula, for her research, who were there back then.＜/p＞＜p＞"The Children's Crusade" taught me more about B-17s and the men who flew them, than I ever thought possible. Similar ill-luck two months later ensconced the regiment north of Gettysburg, where the Badger State troops, this time under Lt. Col. Hans Boebel, left another 250 men on the field. Burdened with political strife and facing a cold winter, the Wisconsin men marched and skirmished their way through the fall and early winter campaigns of Chattanooga and Knoxville. The spring of 1864 brought with it another season of bloodshed when General William T. Sherman determined to drive deep into Georgia and capture Atlanta. Fighting now as part of the 20th Corps, the 26th Wisconsin distinguished itself on a number of fields, including Resaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, and Peach Tree Creek. The thinning German regiment achieved a special distinction at Peach Tree Creek by capturing the flag of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry. After the fall of Atlanta, the men of the 26th tramped to Savannah on the March to the Sea, and north into the Carolinas, where more hard fighting at Averasboro and Bentonville awaited them.
