An Emotional Gauntlet From Life in Peacetime America to the War in European Skies【電子書籍】[ Stuart J. Wright ]

A moving account of the lives of one diverse WWII American aircrew, “filled with humor, chaos, horror, and tragedy” (The Freeport Journal-Standard).

In this book, Stuart J Wright tells the gripping story of a World War II American aircrew flying missions from Old Buckenham, England in a B-24 Liberator bomber they nicknamed Corky, based on years of research and correspondence with crew members and their families.

Wright adds a dimension rarely explored in other World War II memoirs and narratives, beginning the chronicle during peacetime when the men of the aircrew are introduced as civiliansーkids during the 1920s. As they mature through the years of the Great Depression to face a world at war, questions are raised about “just” and “unjust” wars, imperialism and patriotism. Jingoistic sentimentality is resisted in favor of objectivity, as the feelings and motivations of the crew members are explored: the Chinese American air gunner had hoped to serve in the U.S. Army Air Force to fight against the Japanese invaders of his homeland; the Jewish navigator felt compelled to join the battle against Nazi Germany. In recounting the harrowing conditions and horrors of bombing missions over Europe, An Emotional Gauntlet emphasizes the interpersonal relationships within the crew and the spirit these men shared. As pilot Jack Nortridge regularly assured his crew, “If you fly with me, I'm going to bring you home.” This book is a testament to their strength and determination.

Includes photographs

“Compelling…stands out for its integration of pre-war civilian life with wartime experiences. To me, this is the essence of America's story in the war, and I am glad to find a book that comprehends this and tells the story from this perspective.”ーJerome Klinkowitz, author of Yanks Over Europe: American Flyers in World War II

War in Peacetime: The History and Lessons of Korea【電子書籍】[ J. Lawton Collins ]

As Army Chief of Staff during the Korean war, General Collins directly monitored operations in the Far East for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He describes the actions of President Truman, Dean Acheson, George C. Marshall, Robert Lovett, Omar Bradley and the field commanders: Walton Walker’s desperate defense of the Pusan perimeter, MacArthur’s brilliant success at Inchon and disaster at the Yalu river and Ridgway taking over from MacArthur to rebuild the morale of a dispirited army.

“General Collins... has produced an absorbing book which will be of great interest to the general reader... The book is clearly written... and covers its subject well.” ー Denis Stairs, International Journal

“[A] superior memoir of policy making on Korea.” ー Richard K. Betts, The American Historical Review

“[T]he story is told in compact and clear fashion, from the broadest standpoint and in gripping detail, and is supported by excellent cartography... Collins weaves an extremely useful account of his own role within the Joint Chiefs of Staff system. He is particularly informative on the unified department of defense... If he was a cold-war warrior, Collins was of the most responsible breed: a general of intelligence and balance who recoiled from the insanity of playing with global fire.” ー Alvin D. Coox, The American Historical Review

“This volume should not be missed by those of our citizens who want a view of the Korean war from the vantage point of the Chief of Staff of the United States Army at that time.” ー Virgil Ney, Ordnance

“As a primary source for decision-making studies and American historians, the book has self-evident value.” ー Kirkus

Centauri invaded after they took their prisoners. They dominated Belltown until we fought back and drove them home with vengeance. We rescued the prisoners, but the cost was more than anyone predicted. Centaurians struck again with aircrafts and poisonous soldiers, trying to weaken our city before they invaded again.

Engineers discovered how to make an EMP blast so focalized that it could knock an enemy plane out of the sky. It had the promise to save thousands of lives, but the only way to make it was to break Spades’s trust and contact his queen. How could I go behind his back?

Before I even had a chance to ask him, we were attacked by enemy soldiers. He was wounded in my place.

I couldn’t figure out how to protect everyone and still retain my humanity, so I abandoned the mask and realized my own corruption.

The F-105 Thunderchief was primarily designed for tactical nuclear operations. For this reason, it was on nuclear “Victor” alert in Europe (Bitburg and Spangdahlem Air Bases in Germany) and the Far East (Kadena on Okinawa and Osan in the Republic of Korea). After President John F. Kennedy took office in January 1961, his Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, shifted the USAF’s focus more and more to conventional warfare including, through modifications, the mission of the F-105. When the air war against North Vietnam was initiated in earnest on March 2, 1965, the USAF needed an aircraft with a load-carrying ability, and the only aircraft that could do that job was the Thunderchief. This book not only gives in-depth accounts of various historical F-105 events, with inputs from the pilots involved, but is also lavishly illustrated with over 150 images, many of which have never been published before.

A Cold War Fighter Pilot in Peacetime and War【電子書籍】[ Derek J. Sharp ]

Historically rich in detail with previously unpublished photographs

A must-have for military enthusiasts, historians, modellers and those interested in the complexities of aircraft design and manoeuvres during the Cold War

A fascinating and eye-opening memoir that will appeal to fliers and non-fliers alike on how to fly the fastest jets in the RAF

This is the remarkable and true story of Squadron Leader Derek J. Sharp and his incredible adventures.

Nothing perhaps was more astonishing than his survival after striking a mallard duck at 500 mph and his subsequent return to pilot in command. That he survived to the age of thirty was astonishing; that he continued unashamedly on to a ripe old age was nothing short of a miracle.

Conceivably, he followed the advice written on a fridge magnet in his kitchen: ‘Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly’. This fascinating book follows the adventures of Sharp from schoolboy to highly respected aviator. He flew fighters and nuclear bombers, finally seeing action in the first Gulf War flying defenceless transport jets close to the Iraq border.

Sharp consequently survived Saddam Hussein’s Scuds and American Patriot missiles ? ‘friendly fire’ aimed directly at the author.

He flew Her Majesty The Queen and lived in a time long before political correctness, the breathalyser and motorcar safety checks. He achieved all that he set out to do, and more. That would undoubtedly be his epitaph…

Decision by Default Peacetime Conscription and British Defence 1919?39【電子書籍】[ Peter Dennis ]

Britain’s vast losses of men in the first world war produced a revulsion against conscription. Originally published in 1972, Peter Dennis here describes how conscription was introduced once more in 1939, when pressure from within Britain and from France forced the British Government to reverse its position.

With the use of original sources, Peter Dennis explores the development of British military policy between the wars, from the period of readjustment and realignment immediately after the first world war, up to the breakdown of the Chamberlain government’s pledge not to introduce conscription in peacetime. He points out that the politicians and the public were not afraid of conscription itself, but of conscription in peacetime as the forerunner of continental military adventures in alliance with France. He shows how the battles over conscription had a marked effect on the indecision of military thinking, and how, in 1939, conscription finally became the crucial issue in Britain’s preparation for war.

Relative Humility A Journal of Life in a Peacetime Army During the Mid-Fifties【電子書籍】[ Frank Fowler ]

After graduating from college with a degree in forestry, Frank Fowler was eager to apply his newly acquired knowledge, but instead was drafted into the army. He was not prepared for the debilitating effect of losing his personal freedom. Supervision was often couched in game-playing and mindless exercises. Some of it could be rationalized as necessary during basic training, but it was clearly beyond the pale when the bullying leadership continued to persist. He realized a strategy to stave off depression was needed. With a few like-minded friends a deliberate effort was made to find humor in daily living. This led to walking the line between acceptable and reprehensible behavior. The uplifting effect of laughter brought such mental relief that excess energies were frequently directed to this end. While his actions may now seem childish, it was a serious attempt to survive a system that was sucking at his sanity.

Peace Time Marines【電子書籍】[ Whip Rawlings ]

It was brought to my attention, a great number of civilians believe, unless you were fighting in a war zone, you’re not as great a patriot as those that did fight in a war. Unfortunately, this attitude carries over to the department of defense. The Marines I served with, including myself, suffered injuries seen and unseen during training. Any large Corporation in America would compensate their employees for injuries on the job. My question is, “why is the U.S. government the exception to the rule?” Some injuries are mental and other injuries are physical. In either case the government has denied veteran claims by the hundred thousand. In my case, injuries related to Desert storm and arthritis caused by sleeping on ice for twelve weeks in South Korea, including training in sweltering 120 degrees heat in 29 Palms California. During those training I suffered 50% hearing loss in my left ear while shooting artillery cannons for eight years. Carrying 100 lbs. artillery shells and riding in the back of a five-ton truck with artillery shells bouncing in the air, land on top of my legs. During the time I prep for Desert Storm, my unit was taken to camp Atterbury for our final medical treatment. The treatment included a series of injections and pills. Months later I found myself gravely ill from the effects of the medication, including a PD pill, a drug that was supposed to counter the effects of chemical agents. My bones ached, rash covered my chest, shoulders, forehead and caused massive memory loss. I had headaches for six months at a time, I was totally exhausted for months and my muscles ached from head to toe. This course ran its cycle over and over, six months at a time. I went to the VA hospital for a full chem panel, but the medical findings were inconclusive. Not a shot was fired at the enemy during that time, but never the less I was a silent casualty of war. It took ten years before I become eligible to be listed as service connect with the military, therefore; I lived with the pain for years, paying for my health care out of pocket, for something the civilian doctors didn’t have a clue how to treat. Even though I had medical proof, documenting my Gulf war symptoms over a course of ten years, the military shoved my fi le deep in the crevices of the records room, until a diligent rep from one of the contracting departments discovered the fi le and fi led for a hearing. Like myself, other military personnel suffer the same injustice, with little hope of ever receiving financial compensation or medical treatment. I am a proud patriot, Peace Time Marines.

Fallen Eagles Airmen Who Survived The Great War Only to Die in Peacetime【電子書籍】[ Norman Franks ]

All survived the conflict only to die flying in the postwar years. The causes of their deaths ranged from being casualties of small wars, then as now rife in the Middle East, mechanical failure or pilot error. The 1920s were still pioneering years for aviation and aviators and test flying, air races and displays, record attempts etc were fraught with dangers known and unknown. In addition to the better known names such as Sir John Alcock, Captain W Beauchamp-Proctor VC and Sammy Kincaid there are many that will be unfamiliar to all but the most ardent enthusiasts. Tactical Integration of Conventional and Special Operations Forces in Training for a Complex World: Detailed Case Study of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, Peacetime Integration Valuable【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. Current army doctrine provides a guide for the integration of conventional and special operations forces in combat, but provides little direction to guide the integration of conventional and special operations forces in a peacetime training environment. This monograph seeks to determine if and how the US Army should formalize the integration of conventional forces and special operations forces in training for the complex future. By analyzing instances of integration of conventional and special operations forces in the first two years of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, this monograph concludes that peacetime integration in training should be emphasized more, particularly at the combat training centers. Because of the uncertainty inherent in the future operating environment, a formal model for this integration in training could not be developed. Regardless, an increase in integration of conventional and special operations forces in training will inherently provide a common understanding that can be applied to integration in combat.

Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Literature Review 3. Methodology 4. Case Study: Operation Enduring Freedom 5. Findings and Analysis 6. Conclusion

Conventional forces and SOF integration and interoperability is often asserted as a key to maximizing resources to accomplish missions. International relations and complexity theorist Robert Jervis describes this interaction effect in saying that "events that occur close together also can have a different impact than they would if their separate influences were merely summed." He goes on to explain this concept that the whole of a system is different than the sum of its parts. Thinking systemically, CF and SOF integration has the potential to produce greater effects than if CF and SOF operated independently of each other. Despite this, CF and SOF integration is not fully embraced by either the conventional Army or the special operations community. United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has recently instituted the Global SOF Network (GSN) model, where USSOCOM integrates the US SOF more closely with international and intra-national SOF elements. Meanwhile, the Army has implemented the Regionally Aligned Forces (RAF) concept, where Army conventional brigades develop regionally based expertise and form habitual relationships with Geographic Combatant Commands to aid in conducting theater security cooperation activities. Because of these initiatives, it is evident that SOF and CF will continue to operate in the same locations, toward the same objectives, in combat and non-combat operations in the future. Despite the emergence of the RAF and GSN concepts, and the theoretical ability for the whole of a system to be different than the sum of its parts, the Army has done little to formalize or foster continuous and lasting efforts for integrating special operations and conventional forces.

Single Striper: A Sideways Odyssey through the Peacetime Army【電子書籍】[ Steve Smith ]

The Army that appears in the following pages is the Army seldom written about--that of sleep-walking boredom; of repetitive, mind-numbing and absurd details; of scowling, anal-retentive NCOs watching their disgruntled charges for signs of unauthorized pleasure; of days itching with tedium marching one after another in deadly sameness into the dim future.
Eager to escape boring college classrooms for a taste of real life, the author saw the Army as an adventurous rite of passage as well as a passport to exotic places, and volunteered for the draft. He quickly discovered that the army, with its martial airs, enforced class divisions, and its rigid and humorless nature, was a living comic strip, populated by a pseudo-serious parade of starched, aloof officers and crude humanoids called NCOs.
One looked for chinks in this armored process, a moment when our warders were looking the other way. After all, we draftees and volunteers were still full of the antic energy of our post-adolescence, and quickly realized that the only thing that would save the experience from wearing one down to a disgruntled nub was to “bug out” whenever we could and salvage some fun from it. To get through our tours with our civilian identities intact then became our secret undeclared war.
That’s how it was back when the Army was almost fun, kind of like summer camp run by humorless Mother Superiors. So grab hold of my shirttail and haul back with me to the wacky days of the peacetime Army, a time and place which, regrettably, will never be again.

I Never Had to Duck Adventures in the Peacetime Marine Corps【電子書籍】[ C.A. Peters ]

In this engaging memoir, retired Pittsburgh public servant C.A. (Chuck) Peters tells the captivating story of his ardent, lifelong love of and "undistinguished" service in the United States Marine Corps. His affair started when he was a "Junior Marine" during World War Two in a little Ohio River town, continued through his commissioning as a second lieutenant in March of 1956 and discharge as a reserve captain in 1969. While attending Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, Peters endeavored to enlist in the Corps' Platoon Leaders Course only to be rejected for poor eyesight. A year later he tried again, and through a combination of chart memorization and lowered standards, he was accepted. After surviving the grueling twelve-week PLC selection process, Peters, in March 1956, reported to the Corps' six-month-long Basic School at Quantico, Virginia. Once there he muddled through and in October of 1956 joined the famed First Marine Division in California where he experienced peacetime active service with the Marines. He met his future wife and love of his life, Georgina Chamberlain, at Thiel College. Breaking Through the Tension: The Operational Art of Special Operations in Phase Zero - Special Operations Forces (SOF) During Pre-Crisis Peacetime Conditions, Theory and Doctrine, Framework【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This excellent report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. Since the conclusion of the Cold War, the United States has espoused engagement as its leading strategic principle. Despite this emphasis, engagement has yet to coalesce into a grand strategy. The US military, as one component of US power abroad, is often sub-optimized in the pre-crisis, peacetime realm where engagements occur. In this environment, colloquially titled "Phase Zero," the US military lacks an operational art. Defined as the linkage of tactics to strategy, the operational art in Phase Zero is an emerging field of study and practice.

Special Operations Forces (SOF) provide unique approaches in Phase Zero environments. The examination of special operations approaches in Phase Zero provides insights into the challenges of devising and executing a Phase Zero operational art. By examining the intersection of policy, programs and posture in Yemen, Indonesia, and Thailand, tensions are identified and analyzed. Within these tensions, special operations efforts to construct a Phase Zero operational art are examined. This monograph concludes with observations about the logic, methods, and challenges of formulating a special operations operational art in Phase Zero.

Building Sustainable Peace Timing and Sequencing of Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Peacebuilding【

Countries emerging from civil war or protracted violence often face the daunting challenge of rebuilding their economy while simultaneously creating the political and social conditions for a stable peace. The implicit assumption in the international community that rapid political democratisation along with economic liberalisation holds the key to sustainable peace is belied by the experiences of countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Often, the challenges of post-conflict reconstruction revolve around the timing and sequencing of different reform that may have contradictory implications. Drawing on a range of thematic studies and empirical cases, this book examines how post-conflict reconstruction policies can be better sequenced in order to promote sustainable peace. The book provides evidence that many reforms that are often thought to be imperative in post-conflict societies may be better considered as long-term objectives, and that the immediate imperative for such societies should be 'people-centred' policies.

No Turning Back The Peacetime Revolutions of Post-War Britain【電子書籍】[ Paul Addison ]

In No Turning Back, Paul Addison takes the long view, charting the vastly changing character of British society since the end of the Second World War. As he shows, in this period a series of peaceful revolutions has completely transformed the country so that, with the advantage of a longer perspective, the comparative peace and growing prosperity of the second half of the twentieth century appear as more powerful solvents of settled ways of life than the Battle of the Somme or the Blitz. We have come to take for granted a welfare state which would have seemed extraordinary to our forebears in the first decades of the century, based upon the achievement of a hitherto undreamed of mass prosperity. Much of the sexual morality preached if not practised for centuries has been dismantled with the creation of a 'permissive society'. The employment and career chances of women have been revolutionized. A white nation has been transformed into a multiracial one. An economy founded on manufacturing under the watchful eye of the 'gentlemen in Whitehall' has morphed into a free market system, heavily dependent on finance, services, and housing, while a predominantly working class society has evolved into a predominantly middle class one. And the United Kingdom, which once looked as solid as the rock of Gibraltar, now looks increasingly fragile, as Wales and especially Scotland have started to go their separate ways. The book ends with an assessment of the gains and losses that have resulted. As this makes clear, this is not a story of progress pure and simple, it is a story of fundamental transformation in which much has been gained and much also lost, perhaps above all a sense of the ties that used to bind people together. Paul Addison brings to it the personal point of view of someone who has lived through it all and seen the Britain of his youth turn into a very different country, but who in the final reckoning still prefers the present to the past.

Late summer 1946: the Wash on the Fenland coast. Into a suspicious and isolated community comes James Mercer, until recently a serving captain in the Engineers, who is now employed in the demolition of redundant gun platforms. A relationship grows between Mercer and the wife and daughter of a soldier who is soon expected home - though he is returning not from active service but from a sentence in military gaol, and his arrival is awaited with anxiety.

Mercer also befriends Mathias, a German prisoner of war engaged in similar work who has no wish to be repatriated; and Jacob, a Jew, former glassmaker and camp survivor, of whose devastated journey to this isolated place Mercer gradually learns. He learns, too, of the bond between the German and the Jew and is drawn further into their history as the ex-soldier finally returns and begins to re-establish his overbearing authority.

In a place where nothing has changed for decades, the agents of destruction and renewal are at work and everyone begins to search for his or her piece of solid ground. As the summer dies, animosities flare, prejudices and enmities are burnished and the six main characters circle each other like the combatants they believe themselves to be - each man or woman constrained by an intractable moral code, the loss of which is unthinkable. And Mercer finds himself caught in the centre as events quicken to their violent and unexpected conclusion.

In his powerful new novel, Edric captures with breathtaking economy the sense of portent and uncertainty shared by a community in the aftermath of conflict - a community for which peacetime is hardly any different to wartime.

Warriors in Peacetime New Directions for US Policy The Military and Democracy in Latin America【

What should military warriors do in peacetime? Such was the theme of an international conference at the Inter-American Defense College in 1992 which brought together diplomats, military officials and distinguished academics to discuss the purpose of military institutions in Latin America in the new world order. The most important message of this book is that the order has by no means eliminated the need for armed forces.
