The Siberian Overland Route from Peking to Petersburg Through the Deserts and Steppes of Mongolia, Tartary【電子書籍】[ Alexander Michie ]
|

The charming narrative of John Bell, of Antermony, who, in the reign of Peter the Great, travelled from Petersburg to Peking in the suite of a Russian ambassador, inspired me with a longing desire to visit Siberia and other little-known regions through which he passed. Having occasion to return to England, after a somewhat protracted residence on the coast of China, an opportunity presented itself of travelling through the north of China, Mongolia, and Siberia, on my homeward journey. This is, indeed, the real "overland route" from China, and it may as properly be styled "maritime," as the mail route per P. & O. steamers "overland." The so-called overland route has, however, strong temptations for a person eager to get home. There is a pleasing simplicity about the manner of it which is a powerful attraction to one who is worn out with sleepless nights in a hot climate. It is but to embark on a steamer; attend as regularly at meal times as your constitution will permit; sleep, or what is the same thing, read, during the intervals; and fill up the blanks by counting the passing hours and surveying your fellow passengers steeped in apoplectic slumbers under the enervating influence of the tropics. The sea route has, moreover, a decided advantage in point of time. In forty-five or fifty days I could have reached England from Shanghae by steamer: the land journey vi? Siberia I could not hope to accomplish in less than ninety days. But the northern route had strong attractions for me in the kind of vague mystery that invests the geography of strange countries, and the character, manners, and customs of their inhabitants. Ever-recurring novelties might be expected to keep the mind alive; and active travelling would in a great measure relieve the tedium of a long and arduous journey. Of the two, therefore, I preferred the prospect of being frozen in Siberia to being stewed in the Red Sea. The heat of Shanghae in the summer was intense and almost unprecedented, the supply of ice was fast undergoing dissolution, and an escape into colder regions at such a time was more than usually desirable. A few years ago it would have been about as feasible to travel from China to England by way of the moon as through Peking and Mongolia. Peking was a sealed book, jealously guarded by an arrogant, because an ignorant, government. Little was known of the city of the khans except what the Jesuits had communicated in the last century, and what that prince of travellers, Marco Polo, had handed down from the middle ages. No foreigner dared show his face there, except in the guise of a native, and even then at the risk of being detected and subjected to the greatest indignities. The Jesuits, it is true, in the face of the prohibition, continued to smuggle themselves into China, and even into Peking itself, and their perseverance and tenacity of purpose are entitled to all praise. But theyoccasionally paid dearly for their temerity, and not unfrequently got themselves and their "Christians" into hot water with the authorities. This received the high-sounding name of "persecution;" and if any one lost his life for meddling in other people's affairs, or interfering with the prerogative of the government, he was honoured with the name of a "martyr." The Jesuits had their day of power in China, and if they had but used it modestly they might still have stood at the elbow of the Emperor. They were tried and found wanting, expelled from Peking, and China was closed against foreigners, not, it must be confessed, without some reason.

From Peking to Mandalay - Journey from China to Buough Tibetan Ssuch'uan and Yunnan【電子書籍】[ R. F. Johnston ]
|

The journey of which an account is given in the following pages was not undertaken in the special interests of geographical or other science nor in the service of any Government. My chief object was to gratify a long-felt desire to visit those portions of the Chinese Empire which are least known to Europeans, and to acquire some knowledge of the various tribes subject to China that inhabit the wild regions of Chinese Tibet and north-western Yunnan. Though nearly every part of the Eighteen Provinces has in recent years been visited and described by European travellers, my route between Tachienlu and Li-chiang was one whichーso far as I am awareーno British subject had ever traversed before me, and of which no description in book-form has hitherto appeared in any European language. From the ethnological point of view the Chinese Far Westーto which the greater part of this book is devotedーis one of the most interesting regions in the world, and presents problems the solution of which would settle many of the vexed questions relating to the origin and inter-relations of the Asiatic peoples. As for its geographical interest, it may be sufficient to say here that the principalities of Chala and Muli contain what are probably the highest spots inhabited by man on the face of the globe, and that several of the passes crossed by my little caravan are loftier than the highest of the passes existing along the route traversed by the British expedition to Lhasa. My own contributions to geographical and ethnological lore are of the slenderest; but if I can persuade some of my readers that Tibetan Ssuch'uan and western Yunnan are worth visiting, be it only for the glory of their mountain scenery, I shall consider that my book has fulfilled the most useful purpose to which it aspires.

|

The Peking Temple of the Eastern Peak The Tung-y?eh Miao of Peking and Its Lore with 20 Plates【電子書籍】[ Anne Swann Goodrich ]
|

The Tung-yUeh Miao in Peking is a veritable pantheon housing hundreds of deities with scores of attendants, presided over by the Great God of the Eastern Peak. Mrs. Goodrich, in her delightful narrative, relates the stories of these deities: how they came to be deified, how they secured the faith and trust of thousands of devotees, and how they managed to accomodate themselves to each other without interfering with the rights and responsibilities of the neighboring deities. Here is the story of how a faithful people, common fold, gradually built up a religious, syncretistic system happily free from any shackles of logic and historical accuracy. Yet it worked so well that the Chinese flocked to this temple at regular intervals. If there is a popular demand, a common need, a private hope or anxiety, there must be a deity who answers to it. If not, people will create such a deity and show that its worship is not useless and therefore justified.Anne S. Goodrich lived in China for seven years, spending most of her time in Peking, but making trips that took her as far north as Jehol, and as far south as Changsha and Canton. In 1923 she married L. Carrington Goodrich. With her husband she has traveled extensively in Asia.Janet R. Ten Broeck made detailed studies of the Tung-yUeh Miao, part of which she has published, together with Dr. Yiu Tung in T'oung Pao XL (1950-1951). She lived in Peking with her husband who for seven years (1920-1927) held a professorship at the Peking Union Medical College.

The Attache at Peking【電子書籍】[ Baron Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford Redesdale ]
|

These letters were written many years ago, but in China, and especially at Peking, the old order changes slowly, and they are at any rate a faithful record of the life which was led by those whose duties lay, as the Chinese say, “within the walls.” They profess no more than that. Those who wish to learn more about China and Chinese manners must go to that monumental work of the late Dr. Wells Williams, The Middle Kingdom, to Sir John Davies’s fascinating book, The Chinese, or to Professor Douglas’s book on Chinese society. It will occur to many people to ask how it comes that we should have lived for so many years peacefully, travelling through the country unarmed, in the midst of a people capable of the atrocities which have recently taken place. China is of all countries the land of contradiction and of paradox. But I think that those who read these letters will see that though, for obvious reasons, they were written in a spirit of optimism, there was an undercurrent of feeling that at any moment things might become very different. For instance, if the insurrection in Shantung had not been quelled, and the rebels had marched upon Peking, which was undoubtedly part of their programme, the tragedy of 1900 might, and probably would, have been anticipated in 1865. Moreover, although we were riding at anchor in smooth water, there were from time to time uncomfortable signs of disturbance below. I remember how on more than one occasion we were warned that on such and such a day there would be a massacre of Europeans for the old reason, the murder of babies whose eyes were used for purposes of photography. These stories were put about by intriguing mandarins, who succeeded in deceiving even some of the more ignorant of their own class. The famous General Ts?ng Kwo Fan (father of the Marquis Ts?ng, who was afterwards minister in London) was talking one day with an English doctor on the subject of this babies’-eyes fraud, when suddenly he said, “It is no use your attempting to deny it, for I have here some of the dried specimens,” and he pulled out a packet of those gelatine capsules which are used for covering castor oil and other nauseous drugs! We paid little heed to these warnings, though, as recent events have proved, there was perhaps more in them than we supposed. We were sitting on a volcano, for experience has often shown how swiftly this seemingly mild and almost childlike people can be lashed into a fury like that of the flaming legions of hell. One thing we knew for certain. If a rising should take place, we were in a death-trap from which there could be no escape. Those grim and frowning gates once shut, rescue was impossible, for what could a mere handful of menーin those days there were but some seventy or eighty Europeans, all told, in Pekingーavail against the seething mob of enraged devils? When years afterwards, in 1879, there came the horror of Sir Louis Cavagnari’s murder, with all his company, at Cabul, I could but think how much the position of the Legations at Peking resembled his.

Drama Kings Players and Publics in the Re-creation of Peking Opera, 1870-1937【電子書籍】[ Joshua Goldstein ]
|

In this colorful and detailed history, Joshua Goldstein describes the formation of the Peking opera in late Qing and its subsequent rise and re-creation as the epitome of the Chinese national culture in Republican era China. Providing a fascinating look into the lives of some of the opera’s key actors, he explores their methods for earning a living; their status in an ever-changing society; the methods by which theaters functioned; the nature and content of performances; audience make-up; and the larger relationship between Peking opera and Chinese nationalism.

Propelled by a synergy of the commercial and the political patronage from the Qing court in Beijing to modern theaters in Shanghai and Tianjin, Peking opera rose to national prominence. The genre’s star actors, particularly male cross-dressing performers led by the exquisite Mei Lanfang and the "Four Great Female Impersonators" became media celebrities, models of modern fashion and world travel. Ironically, as it became increasingly entrenched in modern commercial networks, Peking opera was increasingly framed in post-May fourth discourses as profoundly traditional. Drama Kings demonstrates that the process of reforming and marketing Peking opera as a national genre was integrally involved with process of colonial modernity, shifting gender roles, the rise of capitalist visual culture, and new technologies of public discipline that became increasingly prevalent in urban China in the Republican era.

The thrilling true story of train-robbing revolutionaries and passengers who got more than they paid for in this Murder on the Orient Express?style adventure, set in China’s republican era.

In May 1923, when Shanghai publisher and reporter John Benjamin Powell bought a first-class ticket for the Peking Express, he pictured an idyllic overnight journey on a brand-new train of unprecedented luxuryーexactly what the advertisements promised. Seeing his fellow passengers, including mysterious Italian lawyer Giuseppe Musso, a confidante of Mussolini and lawyer for the opium trade, and American heiress Lucy Aldrich, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller Jr., he knew it would be an unforgettable trip.

Charismatic bandit leader and populist rabble rouser Sun Mei-yao had also taken notice of the new train from Shanghai to Peking. On the night of Powell’s trip of a lifetime, Sun launched his plan to make a brazen political statement: he and a thousand fellow bandits descended on the train, capturing dozens of hostages.

Aided by local proxy authorities, the humiliated Peking government soon furiously gave chase. At the bandits’ mountain stronghold, a five-week siege began.

Brilliantly written, with new and original research, The Peking Express tells the incredible true story of a clash that shocked the worldーbecoming so celebrated it inspired several Hollywood moviesーand set the course for China’s two-decade civil war.

In "The Attach√? at Peking," Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, Baron Redesdale, presents a vivid and immersive account of his experiences in China during the late 19th century, particularly focusing on his role as a diplomatic attach√? in Beijing. The book is characterized by its rich narrative style, blending detailed observations and cultural reflections with an underlying sense of curiosity about Chinese society and politics. Mitford's literate prose invites readers into the complex world of Qing China, exploring the interplay between Western diplomacy and traditional Chinese customs against the backdrop of significant historical events, including the Boxer Rebellion. Freeman-Mitford, a notable figure in Victorian literature and culture, was not only an attach√? but also an enthusiast of Eastern philosophies and arts. His background and extensive travels provided him with unique insights into Chinese culture, enabling him to observe and document intricacies often overlooked by other Westerners. His deep appreciation for Asian aesthetics and histories informed his anthropological observations, making this work both a personal memoir and a historical record. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in diplomatic history, cultural exchange, or Asian studies. It serves not only as a valuable historical document but also as a pertinent reminder of the complexities of cross-cultural interactions. Die neue Milit?rmacht Welche Pl?ne verfolgt Peking?【電子書籍】[ J?rgen Heiducoff ]
