Puck of Pook's Hill is a fantasy book, containing a series of short stories set in different periods of English history. It can count both as historical fantasy ? since some of the stories told of the past have clear magical elements, and as contemporary fantasy ? since it depicts a magical being active and practicing his magic in the England of the early 1900s when the book was written. The stories are all narrated to two children living near Burwash, in the area of Kipling's own house Bateman's, by people magically plucked out of history by the elf Puck, or told by Puck himself. (Puck, who refers to himself as "the oldest Old Thing in England", is better known as a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream.) The genres of particular stories range from authentic historical novella (A Centurion of the Thirtieth, On the Great Wall) to children's fantasy (Dymchurch Flit). Each story is bracketed by a poem which relates in some manner to the theme or subject of the story. Rudyard Kipling (1865?1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. More English Fairy Tales - Illustrated by John D. Batten Pook Press【電子書籍】[ Joseph Jacobs ]

‘More English Fairy Tales’ is a collection of stories written by Joseph Jacobs, accompanied by the masterful black-and-white illustrations of John D. Batten. It includes such tales as ‘The Pied Piper’, ‘Tattercoats’, ‘The Golden Ball’, ‘Coat O’Clay’, ‘The Children in the Wood’, ‘The King of England and his Three Sons’, and ‘The King of Cats.’ Joseph Jacobs (1854 ? 1916), was an Australian folklorist, literary critic, historian and writer of English literature, who became a notable collector and publisher of English folklore. Heavily influenced by the Brothers Grimm and the romantic nationalism ubiquitous in his contemporary folklorists, Jacobs was responsible for introducing English fairy tales to English children, who had previously chiefly enjoyed those derived from French and German folklore. John Dickson Batten (1860 ? 1932), was a British figure painter, as well as a book illustrator and printmaker. He illustrated almost all of Jacob’s works, including, English Fairy Tales (1890), Celtic Fairy Tales (1892), Indian Fairy Tales (1912), and European Folk and Fairy Tales (1916). In addition, Batten is also celebrated for his delicately rendered imaginings of Arabian Nights and Dante’s Inferno. Presented alongside the text of ‘More English Fairy Tales’, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Joseph Jacob’s enchanting narratives. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales ? a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Peter Pook has graced many professions in his time, and has escaped from many difficult situations. In this latest adventure he takes up the task of teaching, bringing to his duties that unique blend of dedicated hilarity and profound near-scholarship which his thousands of readers find so hard to do without.
The reader is taken right into the staffroom and classrooms of Cudford Secondary Modern School, to meet the very people we knew in the happiest days of our livesーthe fat boy who sat next to us, the cutie who passed us inky love-notes, as well as the fiery Headmaster, Gym Mistress, and Fr?ulein. Naturally, Pook’s own extra-curricular activities involve him with the female teachers, but he does what passes for his best to conceal these affairs from his pupils, who lap up anything to do with S-E-X as eagerly as the staff themselves.
Educationalists will be intrigued by Pook’s unorthodox approach to teaching in the Pop Age, when he strives to impart a knowledge of English to the D stream, who often find difficulty in using even their mother tongue. The N.U.T. and N.A.S. will be delighted by this shrewd appraisal of their problems, while the ordinary readerーPook-addict or fresherーwill revel in this lesson in laughter.

Banking on Form was so funny people said, that they
daren’t read it in public placesーbut Pook in Boots is
even funnier!
Leaving the Bank, Pook continues his aggressive
career in the Royal Marines, where he mixes with earls
and orphansーleading them all cheerfully to perdition,
willingly aided by the smallest Marine on record, the
Hon. Lesley Pilkington-Goldberg.
Opposing Pook and his dislike of discipline is that
magnificent character Sergeant Canyonーfifteen stone
of bad-tempered Saxon warriorーwhose epic encounter
with Pook in the Unarmed Combat Class is
still remembered with awe by those who saw it.
Running through the story is the love-interest of
Pook’s girl-friendsーunexpectedly connected with his
celebrated inter-Service bout with the notorious
Bandsman Bangle, which is described here for the first
time. Because, as Pook remarks, “any fool can read a
love yarn but it takes grit to read this type of literature.”
We meet the shrewdest tactician of them all in
Lieutenant Tudorーlate house-detective at a London
hotelーwhose fondness for the ladies is second only
to his skill in battle. What happens to Pook during the
disastrous Exercise Seaweed, followed by the
extraordinary Passing Out Parade and a hilarious party
in the West End night-club, will confirm his position
as the biggest laughter-raiser in the business.
Colonel Tank sums up wisely when he observes:
“Sometimes I wonder if I’m C.O. of a crack fighting
regiment or the manager of a West End hotel for spies.”

As the massive Japanese war-machine remorselessly advances westward the Royal Marines are rushed to a remote desert island in the Indian Ocean to construct a defence base against the enemy.
Pook and Honners are the weak links in this scheme, and characteristically Honners’ first action is to
establish a lucrative trading-post, while Pook organises a dance for some visiting nurses and predictably falls in love with the gorgeous Pamela.
Running through the story is the shadow of that brilliant tactician Lieutenant Tudor and his shaky Section
as they struggle through Exercise Chop-sticks and Exercise Mad Dogs in a vain attempt to increase their combat efficiency.
The extraordinary adventures that befall Pook and Honners under Sergeant Canyon on this tropical island provide a steady tide of laughter, with the additional bonus of a surprise ending.
Compulsive reading for servicemen and laymen alike, as Pook reveals the other side of war with his original wit and humour.

Puck of Pook's Hill【電子書籍】[ Rudyard Kipling ]

A pair of children happen across an ancient shrine, where they conjure up an impish sprite named Puck, who treats them to a series of tales about Old England. Rudyard Kipling, the storyteller behind Puck's fables, lived in the East Sussex region of Pook's Hill. To amuse his children, Kipling created these quasi-historical stories about the people who lived in their neighborhood centuries ago.

Readers of all ages will treasure Puck's ten magical tales of adventure and intrigue. Kipling's imaginative blend of fact and fancy transports readers back to the days of William the Conqueror, to the camps of the Roman legions who guarded Hadrian's Wall against the Picts, and to the thirteenth-century court of King John. All of the stories abound in the freshness of invention and narrative vigor that have kept the author's books popular for generations. Each enchanting myth is followed by a selection of Kipling's spirited poetry.

Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "Ifー" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".

Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined.

Pook Said It【電子書籍】[ Peter Pook ]

Collections of humorous quotations are rare birds indeed, and the few in existence rely heavily on the celebrated wits to the extent that the quotes suffer from exposure fatigue and lose their impact, like old jokes. Ever since I began to write mirth novels many years ago I realized that humour, above all subjects, needs freshening up at regular intervals, and it has always been my ambition to help fill this gap with a broadside of my own original lines. As far as I can ascertain, nobody has attempted such a formidable one-man compilation before.

Original! Well, as a writer I am a compulsive loner who abhors plagiarism, so to the best of my belief they are original. If some literary detective discovers the odd similarity here and there I shall be flattered rather than surprised because it happened to all the epigrammatists of the past. So much so that Doctor Johnson explained it as two men alighting on the same happy thought ー but Shakespeare had it first. There is nothing new under the sun; we can merely strive to create dissimilarity.

So here is my contribution of epigrams, maxims, sallies, gags, bon mots, ranging from the trivial to the titanic, the simple to the sophisticated, the saucy to the solemn, slapstick to satire ー mostly ripped out from the twenty-three Pook Books I have written.

A banquet for the browser seeking light entertainment; the writer looking for ideas; the student researching the devices of humour; the speaker desperate for quotations; the poet striving after that fascinating skill of word-juggling; the author wondering how on earth he can make his readers laugh; the journalist exploring new ways of saying old things; the apprentice learning his craft with the pen; the philosopher contemplating the follies of human behaviour.

For whatever reasons you read this book I sincerely hope it will prove man enough for the job and give you a great deal of pleasure, so you will agree not only that Pook Said It but that Pook Said It Well.
