"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." -from Pride and Prejudice Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, distinctively free of explicit symbolism, follows the protagonist Elizabeth Bennet. Austen deals with the issues of behaviour, upbringing, education, morality, and marriage in a society of the gentry of early 19th century England by depicting a world where society takes an interest in private virtues of its individuals and bringing into play themes like pride, prejudice, family, class and self-knowledge.In Pride and Prejudice, one of the most cherished love stories in English literature, Jane Austen suggests that the power of true love may overcome class limitations and any prejudices. Through succeeding in bringing down the 19th century British view of marriage, she leaves this very classic behind for us to enjoy.

Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.

Austen lived her entire life as part of a close-knit family located on the lower fringes of the English landed gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to her development as a professional writer. Her artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years into her thirties. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth. From 1811 until 1816, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her work brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime, but the publication in 1869 of her nephew's A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced her to a wider public, and by the 1940s she had become widely accepted in academia as a great English writer. The second half of the 20th century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship and the emergence of a Janeite fan culture.

Biographical information concerning Jane Austen is "famously scarce", according to one biographer. Only some personal and family letters remain (by one estimate only 160 out of Austen's 3,000 letters are extant), and her sister Cassandra (to whom most of the letters were originally addressed) burned "the greater part" of the ones she kept and censored those she did not destroy. Other letters were destroyed by the heirs of Admiral Francis Austen, Jane's brother. Most of the biographical material produced for fifty years after Austen's death was written by her relatives and reflects the family's biases in favour of "good quiet Aunt Jane". Scholars have unearthed little information since.

The Complete Works of Jane Austen: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Lady ... Sandition, and the Complete Juvenilia【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]

Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England. Among the writers who have approached nearest to the manner of the great master, we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen. ーThomas Macaulay 'Pride and Prejudice' is the best novel in the language. ーAnthony Trollope I used to think that men did everything better than women, but that was before I read Jane Austen. I don't think any man ever wrote better than Jane Austen. ーRex Stout Elizabeth Bennet has but to speak, and I am at her knees. ーRobert Louis Stevenson Read again, and for the third time at least, Miss Austen's very finely written novel of 'Pride and Prejudice.' That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. ーSir Walter Scott

Prejudices, Second Series Enriched edition. Challenging Literary Norms: Essays on Society, Politics, and Culture【電子書籍】[ H. L. Mencken ]

In 'Prejudices, Second Series,' H. L. Mencken presents a collection of essays that scrutinize the idiosyncrasies of American culture, society, and politics in the early 20th century. Characterized by his sharp wit and incisive prose, Mencken employs a style that seamlessly intertwines cynicism with humor, offering readers a robust critique of the socio-political landscape. As a product of the Roaring Twenties, the essays reflect contemporary anxieties while exploring themes of democracy, morality, and the human condition, positioning Mencken as a critical voice of his time. This compilation serves as both a literary and sociological examination, exemplifying the author's proclivity for iconoclasm and challenging established norms. H. L. Mencken, often dubbed the 'Sage of Baltimore,' was a prominent journalist, critic, and satirist whose work fervently critiqued American life. His unique upbringing in Baltimore, combined with his voracious appetite for literature and history, profoundly influenced his perspectives and writing style. Mencken's belief in individualism and skepticism towards mass culture shaped his commitment to challenging societal norms, making 'Prejudices, Second Series' a significant reflection of his philosophical underpinnings. This thought-provoking collection is highly recommended for readers keen to delve into the intellectual landscape of early 20th-century America. Mencken's unapologetic voice speaks to contemporary issues, making it relevant today. Pride and Prejudice【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]

"Begun when she was just eleven years old, Love and Friendship is one of Jane Austen's stories that very few readers may have encountered before. Austen experts feel that this story was written, like many others, only for the pleasure of her family and friends. It is scribbled across three notebooks, in childish handwriting, and the complete work is thought to have been written over a period of six or seven years. It is dedicated to one of her cousins, whom she was very close to, Eliza de Feuillide. Eliza herself was an extremely colorful figure and is thought to have been the illegitimate daughter of the first Governor General of India, Warren Hastings. She was also a witness to the French Revolution where her husband, the self styled Comte de Feuillide was guillotined. For the young Jane, these events must have been sheer inspiration to a writer's imagination. Love and Friendship takes the shape of an expostulatory novel. Written as a series of letters from Laura to a much younger Marianne who is her friend Isabel's daughter, it is meant to apprise the young and flighty Marianne about the dangers of infatuation and falling headlong into romantic love. The book offers an early and crucial insight into Jane Austen's style, her wonderful sense of humor and her take on contemporary society. At times, she portrays events almost in parody form, at others, she is sharp and critical, but as always, the typical Jane Austen brand of gentle, sparkling wit is highly evident. She describes the concept of “sensibility” or what we would today call “sensitivity” or “sentimentality” and how it can be taken to ridiculous extremes. The deliberately twisted and complicated plot is replete with fainting fits, deaths due to a variety of causes, including “galloping consumption,” plenty of drama, elopements galore, unbelievable coincidences and wicked philanderersーall the elements that a typical potboiler of the era would contain. Love and Friendship was written primarily for the amusement of her large and gregarious family, and young Jane was probably called upon to read her writings aloud. The reader can only imagine the sheer hilarity that the novel must have evoked. As part of a collection of Jane Austen Juvenilia, this is indeed a treasure trove for Jane Austen enthusiasts as it offers early glimpses of that brilliant talent which was to shine forth a few years later and delight readers of all ages."
