Pride, Prejudice and Poison A Jane Austen Society Mystery【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Blake ]
|

This ‘Austen-tatious’ cozy mystery debut is a mirthfully morbid merger of manners and murder for fans of Laura Levine and Stephanie Barron.

In a quaint English village, an antique bookstore proprietor uses her sense and sensibility to deduce who killed the president of the local Jane Austen Society.

Erin Coleridge’s used bookstore in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England is a meeting place for the villagers and, in particular, for the local Jane Austen Society. At the Society’s monthly meeting, matters come to a head between the old guard and its young turks. After the meeting breaks for tea, persuasion gives way to murderーwith extreme prejudiceーwhen president Sylvia Pemberthy falls dead to the floor. Poisoned? Presumably . . . but by whom? And was Sylvia the only target?

Handsomeーbut shyーDetective Inspector Peter Hadley and charismatic Sergeant Rashid Jarral arrive at the scene. The long suspect list includes Sylvia’s lover Kurt Becker and his tightly wound wife Suzanne. Or, perhaps, the killer was Sylvia’s own cuckolded husband, Jerome. Among the many Society members who may have had her in their sights is dashing Jonathan Alder, who was heard having a royal battle of words with the late president the night before.

Then, when Jonathan Alder narrowly avoids becoming the next victim, Farnsworth (the town’s “cat lady”) persuades a seriously time-crunched Erin to help DI Hadley. But the killer is more devious than anyone imagines.

Transforming Prejudice Identity, Fear, and Transgender Rights【電子書籍】[ Melissa R. Michelson ]
|

Since the mid-1990s, there has been a seismic shift in attitudes toward gay and lesbian people, with a majority of Americans now supporting same-sex marriage and relations between same-sex, consenting adults. However, support for transgender individuals lags far behind; a significant majority of Americans do not support the right of transgender people to be free from discrimination in housing, employment, public spaces, health care, legal documents, and other areas. Much of this is due to deeply entrenched ideas about the definition of gender, perceptions that transgender people are not "real" or are suffering from mental illness, and fears that extending rights to transgender people will come at the expense of the rights of others. So how do you get people to rethink their prejudices? In this book, Melissa R. Michelson and Brian F. Harrison examine what tactics are effective in changing public opinion regarding transgender people. The result is a new approach that they call Identity Reassurance Theory. The idea is that individuals need to feel confident in their own identity before they can embrace a stigmatized group like transgender people, and that support of members of an outgroup can be encouraged by affirming the self-esteem of those targeted for attitude change. Michelson and Harrison, through their experiments, show that the most effective messaging on transgender issues meets people where they are, acknowledges their discomfort without judgment or criticism, and helps them to think about transgender people and rights in a way that aligns with their view of themselves as moral human beings.

Pride and Prejudice【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]

The classic, much-filmed novel. According to Wikipedia: "Jane Austen (1775 1817) was an English novelist whose realism, biting social commentary and masterful use of free indirect speech, burlesque and irony have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature. Austen lived her entire life as part of a small and close-knit family located on the lower fringes of English gentry. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to Austen's development as a professional writer. Austen's artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about thirty-five years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, including the epistolary novel which she tried and then abandoned, and wrote and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth. From 1811 until 1815, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published after her death in 1817, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it."

Violence, Prejudice and Sexuality【電子書籍】[ Stephen Tomsen ]

|

The binary model of sexuality can be devastating and even fatal for people left outside the category of heterosexuality. Essentialist categories of sexuality and gender are often enforced by harassment and violence, as is clear in the case of violence directed against sexual minorities such as homosexual men. This book investigates why men launch assaults on sexual minorities, why these attacks are so vicious and frequently irrational, the identities of perpetrators and their victims, and why such violence seems to have some acceptance in fields such as law, psychiatry, the media and popular opinion.

Tomsen discusses the theoretical and research literatures on models of understanding human sexuality and gender and the nature of hate violence and prejudice in contemporary societies, and also provides an analysis from his own original research to draw out the contradictory nature of both sexual identity and violence and the significance of viewing both fields as linked domains. This text makes an important contribution to current and future discussions of the nature of social prejudice and its ties to legal rulings, collective beliefs and mainstream culture.

Pride And Prejudice, the story of Mrs. Bennet's attempts to marry off her five daughters is one of the best-loved and most enduring classics in English literature. Excitement fizzes through the Bennet household at Longbourn in Hertfordshire when young, eligible Mr. Charles Bingley rents the fine house nearby. He may have sisters, but he also has male friends, and one of theseーthe haughty, and even wealthier, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcyーirks the vivacious Elizabeth Bennet, the second of the Bennet girls. She annoys him. Which is how we know they must one day marry. The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and Darcy is a splendid rendition of civilized sparring. As the characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, Jane Austen's radiantly caustic wit and keen observation sparkle.

The Blind Need Not Apply A History of Overcoming Prejudice in the Orientation and Mobility Profession【電子書籍】[ Ronald J. Ferguson ]

This book has been a work in progress. In the spring of 2000 I started this project and began to collect data and conduct interviews. I copied every article I could find in the Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness and its predecessors Outlook for the Blind and New Outlook for the Blind. I was fortunate to locate Blindness the annual publication of the American Association of Workers for the Blind. One of the greatest finds was the library at the American Foundation for the Blind. The library contains dozens of volumes related to orientation and mobility. Within two years I had amassed a considerable collection of resources. I began working through the materials and along the way prepared some papers for various conferences. A dramatic increase in administrative responsibilities, as well as the tyranny of meeting grant deadlines, diverted me from giving concentrated effort to this book. All that changed as I reduced my workload in order to devote almost all my efforts over the past nine months to this project.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTS

What else can I say about a work that was written centuries ago?
Every time I read it, Darcy and Bingley, Elizabeth, and Jane Bennett, the book's main protagonists, capture my heart.

The main characters' emotions shift beautifully between Darcy's pride and haughtiness and Elizabeth's prejudiced and prejudice.

The method in which their chemistry and the Bennett family's struggles are discussed transports us to 18th-century England and the style of living there.

The Bennett sisters did an excellent job of documenting the natural surroundings, the differences between the wealthy and the lower classes, as well as the education and character differences. True affection and love prevail in the end.

This ANNOTATED EDITION OF "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE" contains:.

Major articles in analysing the moral and social circumstances of early 18th-century existence in order to better comprehend that era and to assess the moral and social circumstances of our own period with clearer clarity in terms of our attitudes and behaviors.

However, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, a love story, was released in 1813. A masterpiece of English literature, it centers on the developing romance between Fitzwilliam Darcy, a wealthy aristocratic landowner, and Elizabeth Bennet, the daughter of a country gentleman.

It is written with sharp humor and exceptional character portrayal. Pride and Prejudice was highly welcomed by reviewers and readers when it was first published. The initial printing was completely sold out within the first year and was never reprinted.

An introduction by Suzan Williams

BENEFITS OF READING THE (ANNOTATED) PRIDE AND PREJUDICE ARE:

(a) Through its characteristics, we can recognize ourselves and sin.
If we read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen while keeping an eye on our inclinations, we might be able to identify some of the less desirable traits of some of its characters in ourselves.

The comedy of manners "Pride and Prejudice" is a commentary on class ignorance as well as personal and societal arrogance. The tale is subversive and functions similarly to Jesus' parables. We readers and viewers are asked to join Austen in her knowledge of these shortcomings and to hold them up for our amused assessment and rejection. As a result, the comedy and the sardonic insight into human failings and moral failure are highly appealing to our hearts and minds.

(b). Marital union is a noble estate.
It is plausible to assume that Austen loved the institution and had ideas about what a healthy and sensible marriage looks like given the emphasis on marriage in her writings.

(c). It's important to respect your parents.
Throughout the book, familial ties highlight the value of respect and dignity. Jane and Lizzie serve as examples of how it seems to their parents.

(d). Compassion shouldn't just be for those who are similar to us.
Although our decisions about whom to spend time with may be influenced by status and riches, this is not the case in the kingdom of God. The first will be last and the last first, Jesus frequently teaches in the Bible, upending outdated preconceptions. The same idea appears to be reflected in Austen's work.

(e). Modesty is a virtue.
It happens frequently that we find ourselves drawn to characters who exhibit traits we deem admirable. This is best shown by Jane, who is renowned for her compassionate nature.

(f).
This version includes a detailed introductory annotation on how the book and the plot were created. To say nothing of the supreme excellence of the dialogue, there is scarcely a page but has its little gem of exact and polished phrasing; scarcely a chapter which is not neatly opened or artistically ended ; while the whole book abounds in sentences over which the writer, it is plain, must have lingered with patient and loving craftsmanship. . . . Criticism has found little to condemn in the details of this capital novel.- Austin Dobson Never was there a book written which has given more harmless pleasure to those who have come under its spell. As we open its pages, we bid adieu to a world of sordid cares and troublesome interests, and though we do not wander into fairy-land, for Miss Austen's world is always matter-of-fact, we do catch a breath of an air less severe than that which we habitually draw, and find, if not fairy-land, at least a touch of the lightness of fairy-land brought down to us. - Adolphus Alfred Jack. "Pride and Prejudice'' is realistic in its narrowness of scope, in its lack of complicated plot, and in that it sets forth clearly and fully a limited section of life. It attempts to hold up no ideals ; it deals for the most part with middle-class people ; it has in it no literary atmosphere suggested either by the characters or by the apthor's allusions. And yet one forgets that he is reading a book ; he feels as if he were making a visit among people in whom he had a human interest. He finds himself scheming with the fond mother in her matchmaking interests for her daughters five.- Charity Dye.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
“But it is,” returned she; “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”
Mr. Bennet made no answer.
“Do you not want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently.
“You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.”
This was invitation enough.
“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it, that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name?”
“Bingley.”

Pride and Prejudice ( A to Z Classics )【電子書籍】[ Jane Austen ]

Is there a book more copied, quoted or adored than Pride and Prejudice? It's hard to say, but what is certain is that the characters have made their mark. Elizabeth Bennet, one of Austen's most enduring heroines, has four sisters, a mother desperate to find them all good marriages, and not much family wealth. When Elizabeth meets the handsome and rich Mr. Darcy, it is not love at first sight. But there's more to Darcy than just pride as Elizabeth grows to realize. A charming and timeless romance and comedy of manners and morality, Pride and Prejudice is eminently rereadable.
