Ragged Spiritual Disciplines for the Spiritually Exhausted【電子書籍】[ Gretchen Ronnevik ]

When we mistake spiritual disciplines for to-dos, time slots on our schedule, or Instagram-able moments, we miss the benefits of Christ's continual and constant work for us. In Ragged, Gretchen Ronnevik aims to reclaim spiritual disciplines as good gifts given by our good Father instead of heavy burdens of performance carried by the Christian.

Only when we recognize our failures to maintain God's commands do we also realize the benefit of our dependence on his promises. Gretchen uses this distinction on law and gospel, presented throughout Scripture, to guide readers through spiritual disciplines including prayer, meditation, Scripture reading, and discipleship among others.

Despite our best efforts, the good news is that spiritual disciplines have less to do with what we bring before God and more about who Christ is for us, not only as the author but also as the perfector of our faith.

Ragged Edge The brutal true story of the Isle of Man TT - the world's most dangerous race【電子書籍】[ Stuart Barker ]

One week in June. One small island. 40,000 annual visitors. Raw speed. Numerous annual deaths. The Isle of Man TT motorcycle road race.

Five minutes to go. The claxon sounds, harsh as an air raid siren. Television crews attempt last-minute interviews with riders. The thousand yard-stares give it away: they're really not listening now.

Four minutes to go. The grandstand is packed. Some racers tell their mechanics, 'I'll see you later for a pint' - just to make themselves believe they will.

Three minutes to go. For the first man on the road, hidden dangers exist. He will have no-one to follow. And he is the hare that the greyhounds will be chasing.

Two minutes to go. By the end of the first lap, riders will be howling past faster than a bullet from the barrel of a gun. A full 160pmh. And that's not even the fastest part of the course.

One minute to go. The atmosphere is palpably tense. It's like no other sporting event on earth. Formula 1 drivers can crash spectacularly and just walk away. Everyone knows that's not the case here.

Five seconds. The starter raises the chequered flag, ready to snap down. No more time for nerves, for doubts. The race has started. How it will end, no-one knows. The TT has begun.

In Ragged Edge, Stuart Barker will write the definitive story of this unique event, from the tarmac up. The history, the atmosphere, the heroes, tragedies and legends. And most importantly: our fascination with this seductive yet perilous test of skill and daring. This is the unvarnished, raw truth behind the world's most dangerous sporting event - in the words of those who ride it.

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists【電子書籍】[ Robert Tressall ]

This classic piece of working-class literature is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. With grim humour and pitiless realism Tressell reveals the lives and harts of his mates, their opinions of their betters, their political views, and their attitude toward Socialism. Edited by Jessie Pope, who was handed the manuscript by a friend and the daughter of Tressell after her father's death, this book is a fascinating read for any social historian. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Ragged Dick or Street Life in New York with the Boot-Blacks【電子書籍】[ Alger ]

According to Wikipedia: "Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author whose principal output was formulaic juvenile novels that followed the adventures of bootblacks, newsboys, peddlers, buskers, and other impoverished children in their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of respectable middle-class security and comfort. His novels were hugely popular in their day. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the son of a Unitarian minister, Alger entered Harvard at the age of 16. Following graduation, he briefly worked in education before touring Europe for almost a year. He then entered the Harvard Divinity School, and, in 1864, took a position at a Unitarian church in Brewster, Massachusetts. Two years later, he resigned following a pederastic scandal involving two teenage boys. He subsequently retired from the ministry entirely and moved to New York City where he formed an association with the Newsboys Lodging House and other agencies offering aid to impoverished children. His empathy for the working boys of the city, coupled with the moral values learned at home, were the basis of his many juvenile "[rags to riches]" novels. He died in 1899. The first Alger biography was published in 1928, and later proved to be heavily fictionalized. Other biographies followed, sometimes citing the 1928 hoax as fact. In the last decades of the twentieth century however, a few reliable biographies were published that corrected the errors and fictionalizations of the past. Many of Alger's works have been described as rags to riches stories, illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. This widely held view involves Alger's characters achieving extreme wealth and the subsequent remediation of their "old ghosts." Alger is noted as a significant figure in the history of American cultural and social ideals."

Ragged but Right Black Traveling Shows, "Coon Songs," and the Dark Pathway to Blues and Jazz【電子書籍】[ Lynn Abbott ]

The commercial explosion of ragtime in the early twentieth century created previously unimagined opportunities for black performers. However, every prospect was mitigated by systemic racism. The biggest hits of the ragtime era weren't Scott Joplin's stately piano rags. “Coon songs,” with their ugly name, defined ragtime for the masses, and played a transitional role in the commercial ascendancy of blues and jazz.

In Ragged but Right, Lynn Abbott and Doug Seroff investigate black musical comedy productions, sideshow bands, and itinerant tented minstrel shows. Ragtime history is crowned by the “big shows,” the stunning musical comedy successes of Williams and Walker, Bob Cole, and Ernest Hogan. Under the big tent of Tolliver's Smart Set, Ma Rainey, Clara Smith, and others were converted from “coon shouters” to “blues singers.”

Throughout the ragtime era and into the era of blues and jazz, circuses and Wild West shows exploited the popular demand for black music and culture, yet segregated and subordinated black performers to the sideshow tent. Not to be confused with their nineteenth-century white predecessors, black, tented minstrel shows such as the Rabbit's Foot and Silas Green from New Orleans provided blues and jazz-heavy vernacular entertainment that black southern audiences identified with and took pride in.

Ragged Dick and Struggling Upward【電子書籍】[ Horatio Alger ]

From the 1860's through the 1890s, Horatio Alger wrote hundreds of novels to teach young boys the merits of honesty, hard work, and cheerfulness in the face of adversity. As Carl Bode points out in his introduction, Horatio Alger filled a void in American literature and met scant competition both in the nature and the number of his works. Like his heroes, Alger rose to the top by chance, coincidence, and hard work.

The hero of Ragged Dick is a veritable "diamond in the rough"ーas innately virtuous as he is streetwise and cocky. Immediately popular with young readers, the novel also appealed to parents, who repsonded to its colorful espousal of the Protestant ethic. Struggling Upward, published nearly thirty years later, followed the same time-tested formulas, and despite critical indifference it, too, had mass appeal.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The book is written in a descriptive and vivid style, showcasing the author's keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the gritty reality of urban politics. Set against the backdrop of a bustling city, McIntyre's exploration of power dynamics and corruption grips the reader from the very first page. The tone of the book is dark and gritty, mirroring the harsh realities of the setting in which it takes place. The language used is raw and unflinching, adding to the authenticity of the story. McIntyre expertly weaves together themes of power, corruption, and loyalty, creating a multi-layered and thought-provoking narrative that will linger in the reader's mind long after the final page. John T. McIntyre, a seasoned journalist with a background in investigative reporting, brings his wealth of experience and knowledge to 'The Ragged Edge'. His deep understanding of urban politics and social issues shines through in the book, lending credibility to the story he tells. Strong adult language is used and several sexual situations are presented.

Excerpt:

“Is that my hat?” he barked as he saw someone at the wheel outlined in the light of the lantern coupled with the moonlight.

Janine turned and pushed his tricorn further down onto her brow from the back. “Come take it from me?” she said, the coquette hard at work in her offer.

Without malice, he clipped the hat from her head and put it on his own. “Now it will smell like perfume,” he grumbled.

“All the better,” she said, her eyes back on the stars again as she guided the ship through the gentle waters.

“We’ve been lucky,” he said, more to himself than to her.

“Mmm,” she agreed. “I hope it holds out.”

He lit a smoke and rested his forearms on the bow, gazing absently into the near dark. Ripples showed in the water where the light from the full moon fell. Still shaking off the grip of sleep, he felt himself mesmerized by the rocking of the ship as it cut through the water. The wind was still strong, but non-threatening and they propelled along at an impressive speed.

Janine locked the wheel and leaned on the railing (wheels are in the back of a ship) beside him. “Got another one of those?” she asked.
He pulled one from the leather pouch in his inner vest pocket and lit it off the end of his own, then passed it to her. She inhaled deeply from it and blew a fragrant plume of smoke above them. “Nice,” she said, looking at the hand-rolled cigarette admiringly. “You don’t skimp. I like that.”

“My father was a merchant and some of his importers are still willing to speak to me. One of them is a tobacconist in the colonies.”

“You’ve been there, then.”

He winced as he realized the trap he’d walked into. Lack of sleep had him off his game. “A few times,” he said. “Never anywhere I ever cared to stay.”

They did not speak for several minutes, each lost in thought. “I know,” she said, at last breaking the silence. “I know, but they don’t.”

He was confused. “Know what?” he asked, as his mind cataloged the myriad things that could be considered private between them.

*****For those who enjoy the rowdy adventure of Captain Dick Ragged, stay tuned for the sequel, A Pirate's Wife For Me, scheduled for release in Fall 2014.

Ragged Dick (1868) is the first in a series of six novels by American author Horatio Alger. In each, Alger uses the Protestant work ethic as a template to not only examine the harsh realities of urban poverty, but provide a hopeful, concrete moral for his young readers.

Dick is a teenage bootblack who lives and works on the streets of New York City. Despite his difficult circumstances, he never loses hope. Dick is determined to both survive and make it in life, and prides himself on his moral standards, refusing to lie, cheat, or steal to get ahead. When he is recognized for his honesty by local church figures and businessmen, they provide him opportunities to work. With the money he manages to save, Dick opens a bank account and begins to rent a modest apartment in the city. As he moves closer and closer to middle class life, Dick takes every chance he is offered and, most importantly, remains hopeful that his hard work and moral vision will not only pay off, but keep him grounded, respected, and alive. Horatio Alger’s Ragged Dick is a simple Bildungsroman with a valuable message that remains a classic work of young adult fiction to this day.

Although Alger’s work was intended for young boys of an entirely different era, many of his themes ring true for our own. In a time of economic crisis and instability, hopeful stories of perseverance and hard work could be a welcome form of entertainment and education. Additionally, Alger’s novel provides a window onto America’s past, toward the very origin of the middle-class promise sought and attained by millions. The Protestant work ethic and the American Dream have been the nation’s defining myths for well over a century, and while there is ample room to criticize their motives and attainability, it is undeniable that they have shaped America’s history and people into what they are today.

This edition of Horatio Alger’s Ragged Dick is a classic of young adult fiction and American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
