A Boy from Botwood Pte. A.W.

A proud Newfoundland soldier’s memoir gives unprecedented details of life as a German POW during the First World War.

I’m going to tell my story. With those words, eighty-three-year-old Arthur Manuel set his remarkable First World War memoir in motion.

Like many Great War veterans, Manuel had never discussed his wartime life with anyone. Hidden in the Manuel family records until its 2011 discovery by his grandson David Manuel, Arthur’s story is now brought to new life.

Determined to escape his impoverished rural Newfoundland existence, he enlisted with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in late 1914. His harrowing accounts of life under fire span the Allies’ ill-fated 1915 Gallipoli campaign, the Regiment’s 1916 near-destruction at Beaumont-Hamel, and his 1917 Passchendaele battlefield capture. Manuel’s account of his seventeen-month POW experience, including his nearly successful escape from a German forced labour camp, provides unique, compelling Great War insights.

Powerful memories undimmed by age shine through Manuel’s lucid prose. His visceral hatred of war, and of the leaders on both sides who permitted such senseless carnage to continue, is ferocious yet tempered by Manuel’s powerful affection for common soldiers like himself, German and Allied alike. This poignant, angry, witty, and provocative account rings true like no other.

Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey T. Sammons ]

When on May 15, 1918 a French lieutenant warned Henry Johnson of the 369th to move back because of a possible enemy raid, Johnson reportedly replied: "I'm an American, and I never retreat." The story, even if apocryphal, captures the mythic status of the Harlem Rattlers, the African-American combat unit that grew out of the 15th New York National Guard, who were said to have never lost a man to capture or a foot of ground that had been taken. It also, in its insistence on American identity, points to a truth at the heart of this bookーmore than fighting to make the world safe for democracy, the black men of the 369th fought to convince America to live up to its democratic promise. It is this aspect of the storied regiment's historyーits place within the larger movement of African Americans for full citizenship in the face of virulent racismーthat Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War brings to the fore.

With sweeping vision, historical precision, and unparalleled research, this book will stand as the definitive study of the 369th. Though discussed in numerous histories and featured in popular culture (most famously the film Stormy Weather and the novel Jazz), the 369th has become more a matter of mythology than grounded, factually accurate historyーa situation that authors Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr. set out to right. Their bookーwhich eschews the regiment's famous nickname, the "Harlem Hellfighters," a name never embraced by the unit itselfーtells the full story of the self-proclaimed Harlem Rattlers. Combining the "fighting focus" of military history with the insights of social commentary, Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th.

The authors take up the internal dynamics of the regiment as well as external pressures, paying particular attention to the environment created by the presence of both black and white officers in the unit. They also explore the role of womenーin particular, the Women's Auxiliary of the 369thーas partners in the struggle for full citizenship. From its beginnings in the 15th New York National Guard through its training in the explosive atmosphere in the South, its singular performance in the French army during World War I, and the pathos of postwar adjustmentーthis book reveals as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers' experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equalityーand its full importance in our understanding of American history.

In Letters of Fire: Thirteenth Regiment West Virginia Infantry Volunteers【電子書籍】[ Heidi C Eads Jones ]

In 1861, passage of the secession ordnance at Richmond, the hatred and scorn of secessionists and the prospect of bitter civil war in their section compelled pro-Union people of the Northwestern Counties of Virginia to take up questions of sovereignty and national identity. Union people of the Northwestern Counties responded to Virginia's secession from the Union by seceding from Virginia. It was an audacious move, signaling that they took seriously the idea that Americans were entitled to freedom from tyranny and oppression; that they belonged to themselves and were not merely creatures of the government.

With this volume begins the story of the Thirteenth Regiment West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, a set of men drawn from all walks of life who found common purpose and had tremendous grit and resilience-"the gamest set of fellows." They looked to themselves and time and again stood their ground with unflinching courage. These men sacrificed for their love of freedom and their country.

Theirs is a story of the purest patriots, men whose intentions from first to last were tried in no ordinary crucible and by no ordinary fire. May their experience and example remind us of our higher natures, the value of steadfastness, the necessity of courage and the great gift that is love of liberty. Indeed, may these virtues Abe engraved upon the hearts of the American people in letters of fire."

The 95Th Colored Engineer Regiment The African-Americans Who Built the Road to Alaska During Ww Ii【電子書籍】[ Mike Dryden ]

The 95th Colored Engineer Regiment is a fictional account of a little-known historical fact; a third of the 10,000 plus US Army troops who built the Alaska-Canada Highway, also known as the Alcan, during WW II were African-Americans from the South. The bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, set in motion a project to connect the territory of Alaska to the lower 48 states. The project had been on the drawing board for many years but had been on hold over budget concerns and the route. All of those issues became mute on December 7, 1941. The War Department ordered the Army to begin a road construction project from Dawson Creek, BC Canada to Fairbanks, Alaska. The project began in early 1942 when over 10,000 troops arrived in various locations to commence the 1500 mile road project. A little-known fact is that over a third of the workforce were African-Americans from the rural South. These former tenant farmers would demonstrate to the War Department they could use construction equipment, supervise the workforce and on one important project, the Sikanna Chief River Bridge, outperform the white units. The three Colored Regiments despite having been issued all the hand-me-downs from the white regiments, the worst sections of roads to be built and the least amount of support from the Alaskan Command, performed beyond expectations. The Colored Engineer Regiments were commanded by white officers, and NCOs and exposed to the same racial discrimination they had to endure in the South. But through hard work and dedication, these young men impressed the military leaders. Some historians believe the work of the Colored Engineer Regiments, the Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st Tank Regiment (Black Panthers) were the beginning of the drive to desegregate the Armed Forces by President Harry Truman in 1948.

Once I Had a Comrade: Karl Roth and the Combat History of the 36th Panzer Regiment 1939-45 Karl Roth and the Combat History of the 36th Panzer Regiment 1939-45【電子書籍】[ Byrd, R. W. ]

Once I Had a Comrade is the story of the author's German father-in-law, Karl Roth, who grew up during the tumultuous 1930s in the Franconian town of Schweinfurt, located in northern Bavaria, and of his regiment, 36th Panzer Regiment. When the Second World War began, he found himself conscripted into the army and assigned as maintenance private to the headquarters company of Schweinfurt's new branch of service, the 36th Panzer Regiment, assigned to 4th Panzer Division until November 1940, 14th Panzer Division thereafter. They participated in the campaigns in Poland 1939, France 1940 and Yugoslavia 1941, before serving on the Eastern Front (southern sector) until destruction at Stalingrad 1943. The division was then rebuilt and again served in the southern sector of Russia before being transferred to Kurland in late 1944, where it saw out the rest of the war serving with 18th Army. During these campaigns, Karl Roth repaired nearly every type of tank in the German arsenal, holding the rank of master sergeant by the end of the war. After six years of conflict he survived being blown off his tank, dysentery, malaria, weeks separated behind enemy lines, a possible court-martial, and was awarded the Gold Tank Destruction Badge. As Richard Byrd began to research the story, several questions arose about the unit and his father-in-law, including: What kind of man was he? Where did he fight and what tactics were used? Why wasn't a regimental history written after the war? What was their strength and what strategic events affected them? Many of the answers to these questions were supplied by books, but more important than all the numbers and statistics gathered for the research were the first hand accounts related to him by his mother-in-law and survivors of the regiment, who have provided a host of original photographs and anecdotes explaining the human aspect of the 36th Panzer Regiment's history. This book then is a tribute to Roth and his comrades, and to all soldiers who aspire to commendable and honorable action during time of war. Key sales points: Provides the first history of 36th Panzer Regiment yet published in any language / Combines operational details with fascinating personal accounts telling the story of Karl Roth and his comrades / Features over 150 b/w photos, many previously unpublished / A major contribution to the history of the Panzertruppen.

I highly recommend 'Co. Aytch' to readers interested in the Civil War, military history, and personal memoirs. Watkins' poignant storytelling and firsthand accounts make this memoir a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the human experience during wartime.

Penal Company on the Falklands A Memoir of the Parachute Regiment at War 1982【電子書籍】[ Philip Neame ]

A British Army veteran recounts the exploits of his rifle company in the Falklands War in a memoir of heroism, humor, and disaster.

In April of 1982, the Argentinian junta invaded the Falkland Islands. On leave at the time, the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment was recalled to join the task force to recover the Islands. With no parachutes, they made an 8,000-mile journey into battle on a North Sea ferry. Philip Neame was commander of a 100-strong rifle company with a reputation for troublemakers that earned them the nickname “Penal Company.”

After winning the first major land battle on the Falklands, 2 PARA was the only battalion to fight in a second. At Wireless Ridge, Penal Company rose above its reputation to play a decisive role. Yet in the final moments they suffered a deadly artillery barrageーfrom their own guns.

This searingly honest account explores the realities of warーthe tightrope between success and disaster, comedy and tragedy; the strength of companionship and the solitude of fear. Above all, it is a tribute to a band of brothers who, taking their nickname as a badge of honor, fought, cursed, and laughed together, to win through on those ‘ringing plains of windy Troy.’

They Were the Rough Riders Inside Theodore Roosevelt's Famed Cavalry Regiment【電子書籍】[ Richard E. Killblane ]

After just four weeks of training, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders--a regiment of cowboys recruited into the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry--fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War with the skill of seasoned regulars. The unit reflected the future president's character as a wealthy Ivy Leaguer who went west to experience frontier life. Most of the Rough Riders were seasoned cowhands from the Southwest, but Ivy League athletes, sons of millionaires and lawmen filled out the ranks. Roosevelt molded this diverse group into a cohesive, efficient fighting force and led them to victory on San Juan Hill. Told from the perspective of the men in the regiment, this book traces the history of the Rough Riders from conception to disbanding, and Roosevelt's transformation into an American hero.

The Civil War in the South Carolina Lowcountry How a Confederate Artillery Battery and a Black Union Regiment Defined the War【電子書籍】[ Ron Roth ]

Some of the most dramatic and consequential events of the Civil War era took place in the South Carolina Lowcountry between Charleston and Savannah. From Robert Barnwell Rhett's inflammatory 1844 speech in Bluffton calling for secession, to the last desperate attempts by Confederate forces to halt Sherman's juggernaut, the region was torn apart by war.

This history tells the story through the experiences of two radically different military units--the Confederate Beaufort Volunteer Artillery and the U.S. 1st South Carolina Regiment, the first black Union regiment to fight in the war--both organized in Beaufort, the heart of the Lowcountry.

Walk Tall With the 2Nd Battalion 1St Arvn Regiment【電子書籍】[ John Peel ]

Australia, in 1962 committed 30 Army instructors to train the emerging Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) with the aim of enhancing a military alliance with the United States of America. The training task continued for 10 years and involved 990 Australians and 10 New Zealanders as the war escalated. This account reflects the experiences of an unlikely member of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) who became the last Australian Warrant Officer to serve with the highly regarded 1st ARVN Regiment. With the benefit of hindsight the author describes the culture and character of the ARVN Soldier against a background of military and religious distinctiveness which characterised the 2nd Battalion of the famous Regiment. Using readily available research through the filter of personal experience he points out that ill-informed, sometimes corrupt decisions impacted heavily on the ARVN soldier and his family as Washington and Saigon went their separate ways. The US Army withdrawal was preceded by one of the biggest battles of the Vietnam War Lam Son 719, which had inconclusive results, even though the ARVN and the PAVN achieved their objectives. However the US Army suffered an unbelievably high loss of helicopters and equipment and the death of outstandingly brave aviators during a 45 day period. These losses were sufficient to require a total review of US Air Cavalry tactics. For the people of South Vietnam the shock of the high casualty rate was great but even worse, for the first time ARVN soldiers bodies could not be extracted and were left on the battlefield which for family members was inexcusable. Losses for the Peoples Army of Viet Nam more than doubled the ARVN casualty rate. Despite the fighting qualities of the ARVN it was the soldier who became the eventual victim of the political war. The highly regarded Australian, Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Daly, KBE, CBE, DSO; wrote that members of the AATTV could walk tall in any company, so too can the members of the 1st ARVN Regiment.

A Guest of Mr. Lincoln The Wartime Service of Sergeant Joseph W. Wheeless, Co. K, 32nd NC Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army【電子書籍】[ Col. Jayson A. Altieri US Army Ret. ]

A Guest of Mr. Lincoln: The Wartime Service of Sergeant Joseph W. Wheeless, Company K, 32nd NC Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army is a must-read story of four years of America’s colorful history. It is also the story of how the Wheeless family came from England to America in the late 1600’s and spread out across the new Republic to participate in its growth from infancy during the American Revolution to the Internet Age and beyond. This book is a story about the legacy of the Wheeless family and how Joseph survived four years of the bloodiest war ever fought in North America. The book also provides snapshots of Joseph’s life and experiences before, during, and after the war, most based on available documents, letters, and newspapers of the day, and some based on suppositions. This book is not a political statement about the war or its aftermath; it simply adds another chapter to the story of the Wheeless’ long history that helps educate current and future generations.
