It has been astounding to consider mud brick buildings, for example at ?atalh?y?k, standing up to 2 meters high with no sign of degradation of either plastered surfaces or painted decoration, or of revetment walls at G?beklitepe, in places preserved over 5 meters, with loosely placed monoliths still standing upright. With these and other similar cases in mind, we scrutinized the architectural remains at ?ay?n? for the modalities of their excellent state of preservation. Taking into consideration indicators such as blocked doorways, rebuilding at the same location without using stones of earlier buildings, and selective patterns of finds left in the buildings, we concluded that almost all buildings related to communal practices or cult, or those that served as prestigious homes, were intentionally buried, some initially by burning. Considering the labour output in burying a building, it evidently must have been of considerable social significance and possibly part of the social memory and possibly. | Uno degli aspetti pi? suggestivi e allo stesso tempo bizzarri del Neolitico vicino orientale ? l’eccellente stato di conservazione dei resti architettonici, in modo particolare degli edifici di culto. E’ stupefacente ritrovare mura in mattone crudo, come ad esempio quelle delle case del sito di ?atalh?y?k, conservate fino a due metri di altezza, con intonaco e decorazioni dipinti perfettamente mantenuti, o quelle in pietra, alte oltre 5 metri con steli monolitiche ancora in piedi nel sito di G?beklitepe. Partendo da quest’osservazione, il presente articolo ha come obiettivo di valutare i motivi alla base di una cos? eccellente e anomala conservazione e lo fa con un’analisi di dettaglio dei livelli datati al Neolitico Preceramico nel sito di ?ay?n?. Prendendo in considerazione elementi quali la chiusura di passaggi, la ricostruzione di nuovi edifici nel pieno rispetto di quelli sottostanti e il rinvenimento di specifici materiali all’interno degli stessi, il presente lavoro ritiene che la maggior parte degli edifici connessi ad attivit? comunitarie o cultuali, cos? come strutture domestiche con ruolo particolare, fossero seppellite intenzionalmente e a volte incendiate. Prehistory and protohistory of ancient civilizations | The geographic definition of the Turkish Eastern Mediterranean includes Cilicia, Amuq and the Aksu-Euphrates valley, which show similar characteristics within the Late Neolithic period. In the Turkish East Mediterranean, the excavations carried out at Sak?ag?z?, Yumuktepe, Tell al-Judaidah, Tell Kurdu and Carchemish have shown they were key sites for the Near Eastern Late Neolithic period. In the publications issued until now, the results of the ongoing Domuztepe excavations, one of these sites in the region considered, have been assessed within Mesopotamian archaeology. Located in the northern part of this geographic region, Domuztepe was excavated by a British-American team in 1996-2012, and since 2013, a Turkish team took the work over. Prehistory and protohistory of ancient civilizations | An intact chamber tomb dated between the end of the Orientalising and early Archaic periods (terminus ante quem 630-620 BC) was discovered in 2013 in the Doganaccia necropolis of the Etruscan city of Tarquinia. Tomb 6423, nicknamed Tomba dell’Aryballos sospeso, contained an inhumation of a female, as well as a cremation of a male, both accompanied by sumptuous burial gifts. Remains of several different fabrics were found inside two bronze objects associated with the inhumation, the pyxis and the basin. The bronze sheet pyxis contained both organic and mineralised fragments of threads and textiles of greenish and purplish colour, while among the organic contents of the bronze basin some open tabby fabric fragments were found. This was due to a paucity of data and a distorted interpretation and chronological attribution of the recorded archaeological evidence. Recent investigation in the region of Fazzan, Libyan Sahara, carried out in the field till 2011, showed instead, that the 1st millennium BC was a significant phase in the Saharan history, which saw a deep transition in the subsistence strategies of the desert people inhabiting the oases. The introduction of agriculture and related irrigation techniques, the development of long-distance trade and the emergence of a complex hierarchical society in the region of Fazzan brought to the flourishing of the Garamantian kingdom and the development of a local and original urban civilization, whose core was the Wadi al-Ajal, with Germa as its capital. Data from the more peripheral region of Wadi Tanezzuft (Libyan Sahara) testify that also the area of the Acacus mountain experienced an original development, sharing similar cultural traits but also differences in socio-economic and political features. This article looks at four cultural phenomena where this might be claimed: the mega-sites of the Trypillia culture in Ukraine and Moldova, the palatial centres of Bronze Age Crete and mainland Greece, tells in Hungary, and Late Bronze Age forts in various parts of Europe. Una traduzione simile si pu? ritrovare, per esempio, anche in Habermas, ma Ricoeur si distingue da quest’ultimo in particolare per la maggiore attenzione riservata alle forme simboliche come strumento di costruzione e al tempo stesso comprensione della realt? sociale. L’enfasi sulla limitatezza e ambivalenza di ogni mediazione simbolica permette al filosofo francese di non incentrare la sua analisi su categorie trascendentali come in parte fa Habermas (1981a) quando parla delle tre pretese di validit? presenti in ogni linguaggio storico-naturale, e pi? in generale della ragione comunicativa1. Il pensiero di Ricoeur trae la sua originalit? dal tentativo di valorizzare la riflessivit? del soggetto, senza fare di questo un a-priori ed evitando contemporaneamente la sua semplice riduzione a una base economica, psicologica, biologica, discorsiva o di altro tipo. Lo studio ricoeuriano percorre una “via lunga” che lo stesso autore pone come metodo fecondo dell’indagine filosofica: adottare i punti di vista e le pratiche di ricerca di specifiche “ermeneutiche regionali”, in particolare semiotica, linguistica, storia, antropologia e, appunto, sociologia, per poi rimandare a questioni di ordine ontologico. Ma la risalita all’ontologia ? sempre incompiuta, accennata, e comunque progressivamente abbandonata con la “connotazione sociologica” della via lunga2. Su questi poligoni, e in particolare sull’ettagono, si sono concentrati, nel corso dei secoli, molti studi: meno numerosi, invece, risultano gli approfondimenti sull’ennagono. Alla base della costruzione dell’ennagono regolare ? infatti il problema antico della tripartizione dell’angolo, questione intorno alla quale si sono concentrate molte indagini. Sullo stimolo delle riflessioni nate dal rilevamento del teatro romano di Lecce, che sembra progettato su una matrice ennagonale, il contributo propone una costruzione approssimata ma speditiva dell’ennagono a partire dalla corda maggiore basata sul solo impiego di riga e compasso. Le conseguenze dell’approssimazione della costruzione, che viene confrontata con quella riscontrabile in altre costruzioni dell’ennagono, sono infine riportate alla scala dell’edificio per valutarne l’impatto sull’opera realizzata. | The ancients were well aware of how difficult it was to accurately construct several regular polygons. In fact, a certain margin of error was present and accepted when they were drawn. Although some regular polygons can be constructed using a ‘ruler and compass’, it is impossible to accurately construct a heptagon, enneagon, hendecagon, etc. only by using what Boyer calls “Euclidean tools”. Over the centuries numerous studies have performed on these polygons, especially the heptagon, while less numerous studies have been carried out on the enneagon. The ancient problem of the tripartition of the angle lies behind the construction of a regular enneagon, and many studies focused on this issue. Inspired by considerations on the survey of the Roman Theatre in Lecce ? ostensibly designed based on an enneagonal matrix ? this contribution proposes an approximate but expeditious construction of an enneagon starting with the major chord and using only a ruler and compass.  Exploring territories: Bubble Model and Minimum number of contemporary settlements. A case study from Etruria and Latium Vetus from the Early Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age Published in Origini n. The first is to introduce to a wider audience the recently proposed Bubble Model: a new method to reconstruct ancient settlement territories. After a preliminary discussion of similar methods that have been used in archaeology, such as Voronoi diagrams (Thiessen polygons), Multiplicatively Weighted Voronoi diagrams and XTENT, the Bubble Model is defined and its characteristics are compared. Strengths and weaknesses are identified and discussed. The main advantages of the new model are: a diachronic approach (the reconstructions of the territories depend on the order of appearance of the settlements); the possibility to detect federative polities. The second aim is to discuss the problem of contemporaneity between settlements. It is quite common to observe, in detailed regional studies, simple maps showing the increasing or decreasing number of settlements for each chronological phase. However, since we cannot be certain of the contemporaneity of all settlements, the trends over time might be biased by settlements with very short life (i.e. less than an archaeological phase). Thus, it is worthy to introduce the concept of Minimum number of Contemporary Settlements (MCS).Finally a case study from Latium Vetus and Etruria (Italy) is presented. Using both methods, it has been possible to hypothesise the presence of hierarchical polities in the Tolfa Mountains, from the Early Bronze Age to the Final Bronze Age. Whereas, in the Cerveteri area only federative polities seem to exist from EBA till FBA1-2. Moreover, it is shown that the progressive decrease in settlement number in southern Etruria might partially be due to a gradual process of stabilization of the minor villages. Since the EBA, major central settlements seem to be regularly distributed at about 100/120 minutes walking time distance, resulting in territories of 50/60 minutes radius. It is integral in a sense of bonding together various spheres of women’s private and public life and not separating civil and political with economic, social, and cultural rights. It is radical by the requirement to change traditional gender roles in society in order to eradicate women’s inequality globally. Also, it could be considered as a particular treaty for not addressing religious freedom issues or even mentioning the concept of religion. The argument of Whiting and Evans (2006) that it is due to “the caution surrounding religious issues in the international sphere” (Whiting, Evans 2006: 12) the CEDAW does not deal directly with the religion, partly explains the absence of reference to the concept of religion and its derivations in the text of the treaty. The argument of Sullivan (1992) that conflicts and tensions between women’s rights and religious rights “set tenets of equality against values of liberty” (Sullivan 1992: 796) establishes other reasoning for neglecting religious rights and concepts in CEDAW. It raises the problem of “competing human rights values” (Sullivan 1992: 796) and absence of consensus in the international community on rights hierarchy. The first aim of this article is to briefly analyze the structural composition of the CEDAW with the attempt to rediscover the implicit presence of religion in the text of the treaty. Secondly, we examine the specific provisions of CEDAW which caused religious reservations by the State parties, considering zones of junction and tension between religion and women’s equality and socio-religious structural elements formulated in the reservations. Si tratta, in altri termini, di un atteggiamento di respiro metafisico, veicolante il “presupposto ontologico” dell’esistenza, dietro l’apparire, di un “essere” da cercare, scoprire e rivelare. In proposito, l’autore si domanda “perch? mai le cose dovrebbero stare in uno e un solo determinato modo, ad esclusione di tutti gli altri”, ossia perch? mai una sola delle molteplici risposte possibili di senso debba essere quella giusta. In tal modo, Corsale intende prendere, al tempo stesso, fermamente le distanze da qualsivoglia proposta di “pensiero unico”, nelle molteplici forme in cui esso attualmente si declina. The abundant structural evidence for the use of pyrotechnology at the Neolithic site of Portonovo is an invaluable means of reconstructing fire-related activities, such as pottery firing, baking or toasting. The specific aim of this research is thus to obtain some information on the maximum temperatures reached during the firing cycles of the many ovens identified. We focused in particular on the transformation of CaO-rich sediments (Heimann 1989), structurally modified by exposure to low or high temperatures (as in Berna et alii 2007), which constitute the inner parts and hardened surfaces of the ovens. The 16 prehistoric structures were constructed within the colluvial layer and in the marl substratum (Schlier Formation), both very CaO-rich sediments (Cilla 2009). The Schlier Formation (Burdigalian pp - Langhian) consists of hemipelagic deposits characterized by an alternation of marls and clayey marls and, subordinately, of whitish grey marly limestone (Centamore, Deiana 1986). The identification of the temperature range at which a sediment was burned is based on characterizing the irreversible transformations that occur when silicate minerals, and in particular clay minerals are fired, using X-ray powder diffraction analysis (PXRD). Vaquero designed an important architecture which was awarded the Gold Medal of the Council of Architects in Spain; he was also renowned as a draughtsman, painter and sculptor. After being named Deputy Director of the Academia Espa?ola de Bellas Artes in Rome, between 1950 and 1960 Vaquero moved to Rome. As a painter, his time in Italy allowed him to visit and become familiar with the ruins of antiquity: it was also a chance to actively participate in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Milan Triennale. Adams. The Nile Valley was the seat of multiple loci of urban development. The one that occurred in Upper Egypt in the context of the Naqadian culture was instrumental in defining the pattern of urban attributes of Pharaonic Egypt, but was not the only one. There is evidence of urban development already early in the fourth millennium BCE, in the context of the Lower Egyptian culture in the Delta. An alternative form of urbanism is further attested in Nubia from the end of the fourth-early third millennium BCE.
