The Shooting Party (A Murder Mystery) Intriguing thriller by one of the greatest Russian author and playwright of Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard, The Three Sisters and The Seagull【電子書籍】[ Anton Chekhov ]

|

This carefully crafted ebook: "The Shooting Party (A Murder Mystery)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Excerpt: "On an April day of the year 1880 the doorkeeper Audrey came into my private room and told me in a mysterious whisper that a gentleman had come to the editorial office and demanded insistently to see the editor. 'He appears to be a chinovnik,' Andrey added. 'He has a cockade…' 'Ask him to come another time,' I said, 'I am busy today. Tell him the editor only receives on Saturdays.' 'He was here the day before yesterday and asked for you. He says his business is urgent. He begs, almost with tears in his eyes, to see you. He says he is not free on Saturday… Will you receive him?'" (The Shooting Party, 1884) The Shooting Party is a triangular love story-cum-murder mystery novel and Chekhov's only novel. Not many people are aware of the fact that before becoming the celebrated short story writer and playwright he tried his hands at novel writing. One can witness the birth of Chekhov's unique style (although in its infancy) for which he would be later remembered for. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is often referred to as one of the seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. He made no apologies for the difficulties he posed to the readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them.

Old Peter's Russian Tales 22 Illustrated Russian Tales translated and retold by Arthur Ransome on the even of the Russian revolution【電子書籍】[ Arthur Ransome ]
|

This is a book of 22 Russian folk tales and stories retold for young people and the young at heart. The tales are a good sampling of Slavic m?rchen. The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other.

This is a book written far away in Russia, for English children who play in deep lanes with wild roses above them in the high hedges, or by the small singing becks that dance down the gray fells at home. Russian fairyland is quite different. Under the windows of the author’s house, the wavelets of the Volkhov River are beating quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight are the broad Russian plain and the distant forests of Novgorod. Somewhere in that forest of great trees--a forest so big that the forests of England are little woods beside it--is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells these stories to his grandchildren.

In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and the author even heard soldiers on their way to the WWI talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the side of the road. He believed there must be more fairy stories told in Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those he liked best.

The editor and compiler spent time in Russia during World War I as a journalist for a radical British newspaper, the Daily News, meeting among others, Lenin and Trotsky and was also known in the London bohemian artistic scene.

States of Obligation Taxes and Citizenship in the Russian Empire and Early Soviet Republic【電子書籍】[ Yanni Kotsonis ]
|

Beginning in the 1860s, the Russian Empire replaced a poll tax system that originated with Peter the Great with a modern system of income and excise taxes. Russia began a transformation of state fiscal power that was also underway across Western Europe and North America. States of Obligation is the first sustained study of the Russian taxation system, the first to study its European and transatlantic context, and the first to expose the essential continuities between the fiscal practices of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

Using a wealth of materials from provincial and local archives across Russia, Yanni Kotsonis examines how taxation was simultaneously a revenue-raising and a state-building tool, a claim on the person and a way to produce a new kind of citizenship. During successive political, wartime, and revolutionary crises between 1855 and 1928, state fiscal power was used to forge social and financial unity and fairness and a direct relationship with individual Russians. State power eventually overwhelmed both the private sector economy and the fragile realm of personal privacy. States of Obligation is at once a study in Russian economic history and a reflection on the modern state and the modern citizen.

|

In "The Slavery of Our Times," Leo Tolstoy presents a scathing critique of the socioeconomic injustices that permeate 19th-century Russian society. Through a combination of essays and reflections, Tolstoy employs a poignant literary style characterized by incisive language and moral urgency. Exploring themes of materialism, exploitation, and the ethical responsibilities of individuals, he vividly illustrates how societal structures ensnare people in a form of economic servitude, even when legal slavery has been abolished. Tolstoy'??s work resonates within the context of his broader philosophy of nonviolent resistance and ethical living, urging readers to confront their complacency in a flawed system. Tolstoy, a prominent figure of the Russian literary canon, was deeply influenced by his experiences as a landowner and his evolving views on morality, simplicity, and spirituality. His own existential inquiries and commitment to social justice fueled his desire to challenge the status quo, transforming him into a pioneering voice advocating for the oppressed. The philosophical and ethical dimensions of his life are undeniably reflected in this compelling work, as he grapples with the moral implications of wealth and power. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in social justice, ethics, and the responsibilities of individuals in society. It invites readers to reflect on their role within contemporary systems of power and to consider Tolstoy's urgent call for a more humane world, making it a timeless commentary that remains relevant today.

Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Identity, History & Conflict The War through the Eyes and Words of Putin and Zelenskyy: Speeches, Orders, Statements【電子書籍】[ Vladimir Putin ]
|

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. Following the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution, Russia annexed Crimea, and Russian-backed paramilitaries seized part of the Donbas region of south-eastern Ukraine, which consists of Lugansk and Donetsk oblasts, sparking a regional war. In March 2021, Russia began a large military build-up along its border with Ukraine, eventually amassing up to 190,000 troops and their equipment. Despite the build-up, denials of plans to invade or attack Ukraine were issued by various Russian government officials up to the day before the invasion. On 21 February 2022, Russia recognized the Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic, two self-proclaimed breakaway quasi-states in the Donbas. The next day, the Federation Council of Russia authorized the use of military force and Russian troops entered both territories. This book tries to shed light on the causes which led to this war. It presents arguments of both sides carried through the words of presidents Putin and Zelenskyy. This edition includes as well the book about the historical background of the conflict and the military actions during the war.
