Discourse on the Origin of Inequality【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]
|

Rousseau first exposes in Discourse on the Origin of Inequality his conception of a human state of nature, presented as a philosophical fiction and of human perfectibility, an early idea of progress. He then explains the way, according to him, people may have established civil society, which leads him to present private property as the original source and basis of all inequality. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 ? 1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of the 18th century, mainly active in France. His political philosophy influenced the Enlightenment across Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the overall development of modern political and educational thought.

The Social Contract【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jaques Rousseau ]
|

With an Introduction by Derek Matravers.

In The Social Contract Rousseau (1712-1778) argues for the preservation of individual freedom in political society. An individual can only be free under the law, he says, by voluntarily embracing that law as his own. Hence, being free in society requires each of us to subjugate our desires to the interests of all, the general will.

Some have seen in this the promise of a free and equal relationship between society and the individual, while others have seen it as nothing less than a blueprint for totalitarianism. The Social Contract is not only one of the great defences of civil society, it is also unflinching in its study of the darker side of political systems.

Primal Philosophy Rousseau with Laplanche【電子書籍】[ Lucas Fain ]
|

Primal Philosophy: Rousseau with Laplanche presents the first comprehensive study of Rousseau’s thought on the possibility of philosophy and the responsibility of the philosopher. Through a close reading of texts from throughout Rousseau’s entire corpus, together with inspiration from Jean Laplanche’s seminal work on the Freudian theory of seduction, this book positions Rousseau within a contemporary debate involving Theodor Adorno and Alain Badiou on the fate of philosophy after Heidegger. In confrontation with the radical subordination of ethics to ontology, which is characteristic of Cartesian thought and its culmination in Heidegger’s philosophical legacy, the reading of Rousseau with Laplanche elaborates the rootedness of philosophy in a process of primal seduction, which opens a way to rethink the meaning of a genuine first philosophy, not as the study of being qua being in the tradition initiated by Aristotle, but as primal philosophy, the study of the genesis of philosophy itself. The rootedness of philosophy in a process of primal seduction then reveals the primal responsibility of the philosopherーa responsibility for human happiness found in the possibility of philosophy itself.

Rousseau and Romanticism Exploring Rousseau's Impact on Romantic Literature【電子書籍】[ Irving Babbitt ]
|

In "Rousseau and Romanticism," Irving Babbitt delves into the complex interplay between Jean-Jacques Rousseau's philosophical ideas and the burgeoning Romantic movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. Babbitt employs a critical lens, analyzing Rousseau's notions of individuality, emotion, and nature, proposing that his ideas served both as a catalyst for and a counterpoint to Romanticism's ideals. The prose is characterized by Babbitt's incisive clarity and rigorous scholarship, offering a nuanced exploration that situates Rousseau within the broader literary and philosophical context of his time, while examining the ramifications of his work on subsequent thinkers and artists. Irving Babbitt, an esteemed American literary scholar and critic, was deeply engaged with the intellectual currents of his era, particularly the tension between reason and sentiment. His academic journey fueled his exploration of the Romantic movement as both a response to and a departure from Enlightenment rationalism. This book reflects Babbitt's keen insights into human nature and culture, which were shaped by his background in classical literature and a commitment to the values of literary humanism. For scholars, students, and enthusiasts of literary criticism, "Rousseau and Romanticism" offers a profound reflection on the roots of Romantic thought. Babbitt's work encourages readers to reevaluate the impact of Rousseau's philosophy and its enduring consequences. This engaging study is not only a vital contribution to literary scholarship but also a compelling read for anyone interested in understanding the evolution of modern thought.

|

Henri Rousseau was a French Post-Impressionist artist in Primitive manner. Ridiculed during his lifetime, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. His best known paintings depict jungle scenes despite the fact that he never left France or saw a jungle. His inspiration came from illustrated books and the botanical gardens in Paris. Along with his exotic scenes there was a concurrent output of smaller topographical images of the city and its suburbs. He claimed to have invented a new genre of portrait landscape, which he achieved by starting a painting with a view such as a favorite part of the city, and then depicting a person in the foreground. Rousseau's flat, seemingly childish style was disparaged by many critics; people often were shocked by his work or mocked it. Many observers commented that he painted like a child, but the work shows erudition with his scrupulous technique.

The Social Contract, A Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, and A Discourse on Political Economy【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]

Jean-Jacques Rousseau writes, "Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains." This statement exemplifies the main idea behind "The Social Contract", in other words that man is essentially free if it weren't for the oppression of political organizations such as government. Rousseau goes on to lay forth the principles that he deems most important for achieving political right amongst people. Contained within this volume are also two discourses by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In "A Discourse on the Origin of Inequality" Rousseau examines the causes of the inequalities that exist among men concluding that it is the natural result of the formation of any civilization. In "A Discourse on Political Economy" Rousseau examines the nature of politics and their effect on people. These three works lay a solid foundation for the political philosophy of Rousseau and are a must read for any student of political science or philosophy.

The Social Contract & Discourse on Inequality Including Discourse on the Arts and Sciences & A Discourse on Political Economy【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]
|

The Social Contract, originally published as On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political Rights by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, is a 1762 book in which Rousseau theorized about the best way to establish a political community in the face of the problems of commercial society, which he had already identified in his Discourse on Inequality (1754). The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe, especially in France. The Social Contract argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to legislate. Rousseau asserts that only the people, who are sovereign, have that all-powerful right. In "Discourse on Inequality" or "Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men" Rousseau first exposes in this work his conception of a human state of nature, presented as a philosophical fiction (like a work by Thomas Hobbes, unlike those by John Locke), and of human perfectibility, an early idea of progress. He then explains the way, according to him, people may have established civil society, which leads him to present private property as the original source and basis of all inequality.

Rousseau A Very Short Introduction【電子書籍】[ Robert Wokler ]
|

One of the most profound thinkers of modern history, Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) was a central figure of the European Enlightenment. He was also its most formidable critic, condemning the political, economic, theological, and sexual trappings of civilization along lines that would excite the enthusiasm of romantic individualists and radical revolutionaries alike. In this study of Rousseau's life and works Robert Wokler shows how his philosophy of history, his theories of music and politics, his fiction, educational and religious writings, and even his botany, were all inspired by visionary ideals of mankind's self-realization in a condition of unfettered freedom. He explains how, in regressing to classical republicanism, ancient mythology, direct communion with God, and solitude, Rousseau anticipated some post-modernist rejections of the Enlightenment as well. The Social Contract & Emile【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]

|

The Social Contract, originally published as On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political Rights, is a book in which Rousseau theorized about the best way to establish a political community in the face of the problems of commercial society, which he had already identified in his Discourse on Inequality (1754). The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe, especially in France. The Social Contract argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to legislate. Rousseau asserts that only the people, who are sovereign, have that all-powerful right. Emile, or On Education is a treatise on the nature of education and on the nature of man. Jean-Jacques Rousseau considered it to be the "best and most important" of all his writings. Due to a section of the book entitled "Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar", Emile was banned in Paris and Geneva and was publicly burned in 1762, the year of its first publication. During the French Revolution, Emile served as the inspiration for what became a new national system of education.

Emile, or On Education【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]

"Emile, or On Education" or "?mile, or Treatise on Education" is a treatise on the nature of education and on the nature of man. Rousseau seeks to describe a system of education that would enable the natural man he identifies in The Social Contract (1762) to survive corrupt society. He employs the novelistic device of Emile and his tutor to illustrate how such an ideal citizen might be educated. Emile is scarcely a detailed parenting guide but it does contain some specific advice on raising children. It is regarded by some as the first philosophy of education in Western culture to have a serious claim to completeness, as well as being one of the first Bildungsroman novels.

In 'The Essential Writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau,' readers are immersed in the literary world of one of the most influential Enlightenment philosophers. Rousseau's works, including 'Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men' and 'The Social Contract,' are exemplary of his unique blend of political theory, social commentary, and philosophical insight. Through his eloquent prose and extensive exploration of human nature and society, Rousseau challenges conventional wisdom and offers thought-provoking perspectives on the nature of man and the structure of society. His writing style is characterized by its clarity, passion, and depth, making his works both engaging and intellectually stimulating. Jean-Jacques Rousseau's personal experiences and observations of society, as well as his deep-rooted beliefs in the innate goodness of human nature, are reflected in his writings. His disillusionment with the prevailing social and political order of his time and his desire for a more just and equitable society propelled him to articulate his revolutionary ideas in 'The Essential Writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.' By delving into Rousseau's works, readers can gain valuable insights into the complexities of human nature, the dynamics of power, and the concept of the social contract. This book is recommended to readers interested in political philosophy, Enlightenment thought, and the evolution of modern society.

The Closed Commercial State Perpetual Peace and Commercial Society from Rousseau to Fichte【電子書籍】[ Isaac Nakhimovsky ]
|

This book presents an important new account of Johann Gottlieb Fichte's Closed Commercial State, a major early nineteenth-century development of Rousseau and Kant's political thought. Isaac Nakhimovsky shows how Fichte reformulated Rousseau's constitutional politics and radicalized the economic implications of Kant's social contract theory with his defense of the right to work. Nakhimovsky argues that Fichte's sequel to Rousseau and Kant's writings on perpetual peace represents a pivotal moment in the intellectual history of the pacification of the West. Fichte claimed that Europe could not transform itself into a peaceful federation of constitutional republics unless economic life could be disentangled from the competitive dynamics of relations between states, and he asserted that this disentanglement required transitioning to a planned and largely self-sufficient national economy, made possible by a radical monetary policy. Fichte's ideas have resurfaced with nearly every crisis of globalization from the Napoleonic wars to the present, and his book remains a uniquely systematic and complete discussion of what John Maynard Keynes later termed "national self-sufficiency." Fichte's provocative contribution to the social contract tradition reminds us, Nakhimovsky concludes, that the combination of a liberal theory of the state with an open economy and international system is a much more contingent and precarious outcome than many recent theorists have tended to assume.
