The Naked Beggar And Other Stories【電子書籍】[ Zeeshan-ul-hassan Usmani ]

Ever since man started to create stories, there has existed a seemingly invisible yet eternal bond between fictional tales woven out of words and the actual truth. It is undeniable that the truth always reigns with magnificence and glory within any culture and its people. It is this very truth, seemingly shrouded in lies, that a writer attempts to capture and jail forever within intricate cages of letters and words. Doing this is an attempt, on his part, to relieve the heavy hearts of society from the burden of these lies. Although the need for guile exists as the requirement of the times, it is nonetheless preferred to be kept anonymous and unidentifiable. Consequently, the writer too has to alter the identity of these lies. Hence, borrowing unknown shrouds and cloaking these fibs with torn, soiled, and beleaguered words, he is forced to present them as being true. The Naked Beggar and Other Stories is also a similar attempt of a writer to go within the heart of truth and weave out tales that, though born of honesty, cannot be presented as anything else but falsehood. That is the need of the time, and it is the only way these truths will ever be accepted. These stories are strewn all about us but are visible only to the discerning eye and a sensitive heart. Mans intellect can only attempt to capture the essence of these tales. It is ultimately up to the human heart to inject meaning and life into them. For this reason, this collection is not just stories but living beings that have the potential to touch our lives as potently as mortals do. Should the circumambulation of the world seem tedious and wearisome, and should you feel the need to slow down and look inside your heart for peace rather than search for it in the meaningless rowdiness around you, then the stories in this collection will not disappoint you.

The Cusanus Game【電子書籍】[ Wolfgang Jeschke ]

Biologist Domenica Ligrina fears her planet is dying. She might be right.

An atomic disaster near the French-German border has contaminated Northern Europe with radioactivity. Economic and political calamities are destroying the whole planet. Human DNA is mutating, plant species are going extinct, and scientists are feverishly working on possible solutions. It becomes increasingly apparent that the key to future salvation lies in the past. In 2052 a secret research facility in the Vatican is recruiting scientists for a mission to restore the flora of the irradiated territories. The institute claims to have time travel. When Domenica's sometime-lover tells her that he knows her future but that she must decide her own fate, she enlists despite his ambiguous warning.
The Middle Ages hold Domenica spellbound. She immerses herself in the mysteries, puzzles, and peculiarities of a culture foreign to her, though she risks changing the past with effects far more disastrous than radiation poisoning. Perhaps there is more than one Domenica, and more than one catastrophe
In the tradition of Stanislaw Lem and Philip K. Dick, Wolfgang Jeschke's The Cusanus Game is a novel of future disaster in Europe by the grand master of German science fiction

At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Economy and Theology Cusanus’s Theory of Value【電子書籍】[ Agnieszka Kijewska ]

Economy and Theology: Cusanus's Theory of Value, a study from the field of the history of philosophy, responds to the present-day interest in what is referred to as economic theology. This study aims to show that value (valor), one of the fundamental concepts of contemporary philosophy and economics, has its genealogy in the thought of Nicholas of Cusa. Starting from the economic context (the concept of price/pretium), Cusanus proposes the theory of value that, on the one hand, is objectively rooted in the Divine act of creation (God as the Minter) and, on the other hand, requires reading by human beings (human mind as a banker). While this theory appears in Cusanus’s late work The Bowling-Game, it is underpinned by his theory of knowledge, theory of human beings and human cognition against the background of his vision of the universe. Thus, the aim of the book is to try to answer the question about the role and tasks of human beings as a principal player in economic and social game. This description of human position emerges from the creative tension between human philosophical and theological reflection and certain economic solutions.

It contextualises the motivations, rationale, and the impact of the banking reforms embarked upon by the Central Bank of Nigeria under Mallam Lamido Sanusi, who is fondly referred to as the risk god by his professional colleagues in the banking industry because of his unmatched mastery of risk management.

Echoes of Aquinas in Cusanus's Vision of Man【電子書籍】[ Markus F?hrer ]

Echoes of Aquinas in Cusanus’s Vision of Man demonstrates the influence that the philosophical and theological anthropology of Saint Thomas Aquinas had on Nicholas of Cusa’s (Cusanus) view of human nature. Markus F?hrer demonstrates that Cusanus's view of the place of man in the universe is remarkably similar to the view of Aquinas. F?hrer thereby challenges the prevailing opinion that Cusanus was a Renaissance philosopher dedicated to the philosophy of man and that he was one of the founders of Renaissance humanism. A close examination of the texts of both Aquinas and Cusanus, when compared to some of the leading Renaissance writers, indicates that it is not entirely true that Cusanus was Renaissance in his analysis of the human condition. Because Cusanus’s copies of some of the works of Aquinas are still intact and his marginal comments in these manuscripts indicate not only that he read Aquinas carefully, but also actually reacted to texts in Aquinas, it is possible to conduct a study of Cusanus’s use of Aquinas based directly on the text of Aquinas. F?hrer also explores similarities by studying the formulae that both writers used in expressing their respective positions. This book, with its unique examination of the impact of Aquinas’s thought upon Cusanus, will appeal to students and scholars of late medieval theology and philosophy.

Engaging Eriugena, Eckhart and Cusanus【電子書籍】[ Donald F. Duclow ]

Engaging Eriugena, Eckhart and Cusanus contains two new essays and nine others published between 2005 and 2019. The essays explore Eriugena, Eckhart and Cusanus as bold thinkers deeply engaged with their times and culture.

John Scottus Eriugena, Meister Eckhart and Nicholas of Cusa are key figures in the medieval Christian Neoplatonic tradition. This book focuses on their engagement with practical, experiential issues and controversies. Eriugena revises Genesis’ Adam and Eve narrative and makes sexual difference and overcoming it central to his Periphyseon. Eckhart’s Annunciation sermons urge his hearers to give birth to God’s son within their lives, and he develops a distinctive approach to pain and suffering. His radical preaching on the Eucharist and mystical union was judged heretical but was later taken up by Nicholas of Cusa. Coins and banking became key symbols in Cusanus’ exploration of humanity as created in God’s image, and he used mechanical clocks in reflecting on time and eternity. "Engagement" also describes these thinkers’ reception of their predecessors and how later readers appropriated their works. Eriugena struggled with the legacy of Augustine and the Greek Fathers. Eckhart’s theology of suffering provoked varied responses from his students Henry Suso, Johannes Tauler and the twentieth-century therapist Ursula Fleming. Cusanus provides the volume’s lynchpin as two articles analyse his reading of Eriugena and Eckhart, and a third discusses how he deftly countered Johannes Wenck’s accusations of heresy.

The book will be of interest to students of Medieval Philosophy, Theology, Spirituality and their place within Cultural History.

How many times have you told yourself: 'never again'? I know I have a few times, after heartbreaks or extreme challenges life brought me. You live your life, try your best, but sometimes it just feels like it's never enough, no matter what you do. Life breaks us all just to heal us. All we need to do is embrace change and allow it to happen. Love will do the rest. This is my story, written in the sweet language of Eminescu.

Aceasta este povestea mea, scrisa in dulcea limba a lui Eminescu.

Walking with God Lessons on Intimacy Which I Have Learnt Along the Journey【電子書籍】[ Modupe Sanusi ]

Enoch walked with God before the flood. So did Moses after the flood. The bible has an endless list of men and women who walked with the LORD. Jesus Christ is the best example of a man who walked with God. Every single one of us have the basic birthright to walk intimately with God. However, there are some principles and virtues which we must align ourselves with in order to make this possible. One of them is love. Another is faith. Another important one is humility. Idolatry must be disposed of and reliance and trust upon Jesus must be exercised every day. It is not an easy task but we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. In this text we will explore what we can do to maximize our opportunities to walk with God effectively. This is His heart desire and this must become ours. Let us make use of our time to develop intimacy with God. We must only learn and believe. He will provide the rest.

The Naked Beggar And Other Stories【電子書籍】[ Zeeshan-ul-hassan Usmani ]

Curiosity defines the struggles of an ordinary man to come to terms with extraordinary circumstances in order to discover the exact nature of his identity. Though the characters are fictitious, the land, with its convoluted internal struggle as well as its abysmal darkness of ignorance, corruption, illiteracy, and its defiance and obstinacy to come to terms with this malevolence is very much real.

Curiosity takes its start in an impoverished, rural village in Pakistan where the question of the day is survival, even at the cost of dignity. Abdullah, the protagonist, is a nameless son of a ploughman who sets out to defy the odds and change the course of his life. His odyssey of self-discovery is through the channels of religion and spirituality. Abdullah realizes that his greatest battle is finding a voice in a third world country where poverty is a mans greatest foe. Using faith and spiritual guidance as his weapons, he nurtures his relationship with God and seeks spiritual leaders. As his education increases, so do his questions about the morality and ethics of the society in which he struggles to make his place as a Muslim. A coveted scholarship allows him to move to the US. Here he challenges every assumption he has made throughout his life about the country, its culture and its people.

The questions about life that Abdullah seeks to answer are real life narratives that frame the current political and social position of Pakistan on the global stage. Curiosity is not only a social reformist novel but also a seething satire on modern Pakistani society. It is the story of a traveler who begins his journey without a destination in mind. A traveler who hitches a ride on any caravan that is headed anywhere. It is only at the end of the journey that he realizes that it was the wrong caravan and the wrong destination. All of the people whom he yearns would join him do not share his passions nor his visions to make the land as pure as it couldand shouldbe.

Leon Battista Alberti and Nicholas Cusanus Towards an Epistemology of Vision for Italian Renaissance Art and Culture【電子書籍】[ Charles H. Carman ]

Providing a fresh evaluation of Alberti’s text On Painting (1435), along with comparisons to various works of Nicholas Cusanus - particularly his Vision of God (1450) - this study reveals a shared epistemology of vision. And, the author argues, it is one that reflects a more deeply Christian Neoplatonic ideal than is typically accorded Alberti. Whether regarding his purpose in teaching the use of a geometric single point perspective system, or more broadly in rendering forms naturalistically, the emphasis leans toward the ideal of Renaissance art as highly rational. There remains the impression that the principle aim of the painter is to create objective, even illusionistic images. A close reading of Alberti’s text, however, including some adjustments in translation, points rather towards an emphasis on discerning the spiritual in the material. Alberti’s use of the tropes Minerva and Narcissus, for example, indicates the opposing characteristics of wisdom and sense certainty that function dialectically to foster the traditional importance of seeing with the eye of the intellect rather than merely with physical eyes. In this sense these figures also set the context for his, and, as the author explains, Brunelleschi’s earlier invention of this perspective system that posits not so much an objective seeing as an opposition of finite and infinite seeing, which, moreover, approximates Cusanus’s famous notion of a coincidence of opposites. Together with Alberti’s and Cusanus’s ideals of vision, extensive analysis of art works discloses a ubiquitous commitment to stimulating an intellectual perception of divine, essential, and unseen realities that enliven the visible material world.
